Edwin also facing a lineup with maybe 3 legit MLB players.
the phils lineup is sad.

Daily Notes predictions have been on the money lately. My 15 recommended pitchers (all owned in less than 40 percent of ESPN.com leagues) in the three weekend editions of Daily Notes combined for a 2.63 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 7.5 K/9. Tuesday's MLB schedule is chock full of aces, with an eye-popping 14 pitchers owned in at least 93 percent of the ESPN.com universe -- Justin Verlander, Justin Masterson, Julio Teheran, Gio Gonzalez, Jeff Locke, Mat Latos, Hiroki Kuroda, Chris Sale, James Shields, Clayton Kershaw, Jeremy Hellickson, Yu Darvish, Felix Hernandez and Matt Cain. The other majority-owned arm is Wade Miley (52 percent). Of these 15 pitchers, Verlander (5.12 ERA, 1.61 WHIP in past five starts) and Gonzalez (9 IP, 19 H, 13 ER in past two starts) have been the shakiest, but I still can't recommend sitting either of them in good conscience. As for the little-owned arms, check out these six names, who are all still available in at least three-fourths of ESPN.com waiver wires:
Edwin Jackson (24 percent ESPN.com fantasy ownership) is red-hot, putting forth a streak of six straight quality starts. During this span, he's 4-1 with a 2.23 ERA, 0.94 WHIP and .211 opponents' BA. The strikeouts may not be great during this ride (6.2 K/9), but he has four times as many whiffs (28) as walks (seven) in these 40 1/3 innings, which has included a trip to Colorado and home games against the St. Louis Cardinals and Pittsburgh Pirates. On Tuesday, Jackson goes back on the road to Citizens Bank Park to face the fading Philadelphia Phillies, who are in a 1-13 funk, averaging 2.4 runs per game with a .198 BA, .258 OBP and .296 SLG during these miserable two weeks. He's also opposing Kyle Kendrick, who has been a JUGS pitching machine in his past six starts, sporting a Slurpee 7.11 ERA and a .350 opponents' BA. Although Jackson's three career starts in Philadelphia haven't gone well (0-3, 5.50 ERA, 1.56 WHIP), he's still worthy of a play in the vast majority of fantasy leagues Tuesday.
Wily Peralta (5 percent ESPN.com fantasy ownership) has been all but written off by fantasy owners, but I'm not ready to jump off the bandwagon just yet. From June 21 to July 21, the 24-year-old led the majors (minimum 25 IP) with an 0.87 ERA in six starts, sporting a .181 opponents' BA and recording 7.0 K/9. Sure Peralta's past two outings have stunk (8 2/3 IP, 12 H, 12 R, 8 ER), but these games occurred at Coors Field and Wrigley Field, two venues that have never been referred to as "pitcher friendly." Such a phrase is commonplace to precede AT&T Park, the place Peralta is throwing Tuesday. One of the reasons this venue is so stingy is because of the host San Francisco Giants lineup that is 5-15 in its past 20 home games with 2.4 runs per game, a .233 BA and .307 SLG. I'm not expecting him to outpitch Matt Cain, who has been filthy in his past two starts -- 15 IP, 2 ER, 14 K -- but Peralta should still be started in most fantasy formats for the time being.
Bud Norris (16 percent ESPN.com fantasy ownership) exceeded expectations in his Baltimore Orioles debut last Wednesday, holding his former Houston Astros to two runs and four hits in six innings, punching out a season-high eight strikeouts. Since June 1, Norris has 60 strikeouts in 69 innings (7.8 K/9) with eight quality starts in 11 outings. On Tuesday, he'll try to keep it going against a San Diego Padres team he has enjoyed facing in his career, going 2-1 with a 3.13 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 9.8 K/9 against them. The reason Norris isn't higher on the daily rankings is that the Padres have played extremely well at Petco Park lately, posting a strong .760 OPS in the past seven games (5-2 record). And even with Wednesday's brilliant start against the worst team in the majors, Norris is still 5-18 with a 6.69 ERA and 1.69 WHIP in his past 27 road starts. Norris is only worthy of a deeper league play Tuesday.
Steven Wright (0 percent ESPN.com fantasy ownership) will make his first major league start Tuesday against the Houston Astros, which instantly makes him a great win candidate. Seeing the name "Jordan Lyles" on the opposing lineup card makes Wright an even better win candidate. Lyles is riding a seven-start winless skid, in which he's 0-4 with a 7.61 ERA, 1.80 WHIP, .335 opponents' BA and 4.4 K/9. While the 28-year-old Wright may not be a long-term fantasy option because of his horrible walk rate this season (4.7 BB/9 in Triple-A, 5.1 BB/9 with Boston Red Sox), that shouldn't hold him back for this matchup. The free-swinging Astros (1,034 K's, 9.4 per game) have a shot at the major league record for batter strikeouts (1,529 or 9.4 per game by 2010 Arizona Diamondbacks) and have whiffed 3.6 more times than they have walked (289). AL-only owners in need of a win should give the durable Wright a spot start Tuesday.
Tyler Chatwood (16 percent ESPN.com fantasy ownership) certainly got shelled Wednesday at Turner Field, allowing 10 hits and eight runs (seven earned) in just 2 1/3 innings to the Atlanta Braves. However, that is just the third time all season that Chatwood has allowed more than two runs in a game. He followed up the other two poor outings by allowing just two runs in 12 2/3 innings on the road versus the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres. The 23-year-old takes to the road again Tuesday to face the putrid, David Wright-less New York Mets lineup. In their past 10 games, the Mets are 3-7 with 24 runs, a .225 BA and a .310 SLG. Chatwood's poor track record after Aug. 1 in his career (4-9, 6.08 ERA, 1.78 WHIP) tempers my expectations for Tuesday, but I think he'll still wind up with a quality start and a win at Citi Field, where he hasn't allowed a run in 10 career innings.
Andrew Albers (0 percent ESPN.com fantasy ownership) makes his major league debut Tuesday on the road versus the Kansas City Royals, who have been sizzling with 11 wins in their past 12 contests. However, the lineup hasn't really exploded during this wild ride, averaging 4.2 runs per nine innings with a pedestrian slash of .269/.319/.391. The Canadian-born Albers has never been considered a top prospect, but his Triple-A numbers this year have been strong. In 22 starts, he's 11-5 with a 2.86 ERA, 1.18 WHIP, 7.9 K/9 and three complete games. The 27-year-old southpaw benefits from facing a Royals club that has a subpar .691 OPS (21st in majors) against left-handers this season. Albers is certainly a gamble, but based on how well first-time starters have done this season, he could be a nice find for ultra-deep formats.

Chicago @ PHILADELPHIA
Chicago +106 over PHILADELPHIA
BEST LINE: Pinnacle +106
The Phillies have dropped five in a row and 14 of their past 15 games. Philadelphia’s lone win over that span came against Barry Zito. They’ve had a difficult schedule over that stretch (Atlanta, San Fran, Detroit, St. Louis and the Mets) but 14 losses in 15 games takes a negative toll. The Phillies were in striking distance before the All-Star break but have fallen 17 games back of first place Atlanta after being swept by the Braves this past weekend. Team morale can’t be high coming into this series. Kyle Kendrick was having a fine year but his recent struggles should not be ignored. Over his last five starts covering 26 frames, Kendrick has just 12 K’s against seven walks. He also has an alarming 30% line-drive rate over that span along with a 7.36 xERA. Kendrick's skills lack the wow factor. His hot streak earlier in the year coincided with a favorable 25% hit rate and 81% strand rate. Those rates have since normalized and the result is a thin margin for error. Kendrick may offer up some value as a pooch but as the chalk pitching for a demoralized group, he offers none.
Edwin Jackson delivered in July on the profit potential we forecasted out of him over the last six weeks. Jackson posted a 1.83 ERA and 0.87 WHIP in 34 IP during July. The recipe was elite command and the third-highest groundball rate (60%) in the NL. Jackson has a history of strong finishes. He has an outstanding and almost scary 12% line-drive rate over his past 46 innings. He has walked just six batters over his past 34 frames. Jackson’s 4.65 ERA is a complete mirage. Up until late June, Jackson’s 38%/61% hit%/strand% split was the perfect storm of bad luck but he has reversed his fortunes and the results are an exceptional hidden skill set. Jackson has a great chance to thrive again here against a Philadelphia squad that is last in the majors with a .212 batting average over its past 15 games.

Colorado @ N.Y. METS

BEST LINE: Pinnacle +100
The Rockies have just 21 road wins in 56 attempts this season. That is the 4th worst mark in MLB, ahead of only the Marlins, Brewers, Astros and White Sox. Over its past six road games, Colorado has scored 12 runs and overall it has dropped six of its last seven on the road. Tyler Chatwood is 7-4 with an impressive 3.15 ERA and while there are definite improvements in his profile, that include a 1.1 mph increase in his fastball to 93.6 mph, 3.5% jump in his swinging strike rate and an elite groundball rate, there are also warning signs that tell us to beware. First, Chatwood’s 3.15 ERA has been greatly aided by an unsustainable 80% strand rate. His 1.39 WHIP is not even at an acceptable level. Batters have hit .279 against him and when you combine everything together, that being a high strand rate, a high BAA and a high WHIP, it does not correlate to a low ERA. Chatwood has struck out four batters or fewer in nine of his past 10 starts and when he faced the Mets back on June 27, he whiffed just two batters in six frames. Let someone else purchase Chatwood’s ERA and W/L record while we step in and sell high.
Jenrry Mejia had TJS in May 2011 and battled forearm tendinitis this spring. He was shut down until mid-May and has been on a strengthening program since. Mejia was one of the most impressive starters in any MLB spring camp a few years ago. Mejia was at one time a top prospect, who may finally be ready to break through and provide the Mets will quality results. His raw ability is undeniable, as he has a mid-90s fastball with movement. In two starts back with the Mets, Mejia has 11 K’s in 13 innings while issuing just one walk. He also has an elite 63% groundball rate and an xERA of just 2.62. The Rockies offense ranks 27th in MLB on the road and most of these Rockies have never seen him. Four current Rockies have faced Mejia and they are a combined 0-7 in those AB’s. There is great profit potential in Mejia’s arm and there is no doubt that he and the Mets are wrongly priced here.

Minnesota @ KANSAS CITY
Minnesota +168 over KANSAS CITY
BEST LINE: Pinnacle +168
James Shields is having another James Shields season. A model of consistency for years, Shields is once again posting relevant numbers that include a 3.08 ERA and 128 K’s in 155 innings. However, in 23 starts, Shields’ is just 6-7, meaning the Royals struggle to win when he takes the hill. There are also plenty of warning signs in his recent profile that suggest an implosion is forthcoming. Shields’ has pitched 205 innings or more in six straight years and he’s well on his way to another 200+ innings season. Last year he threw 228 frames and in ’12 he pitched 249 innings. Over his last five starts covering 32 frames, Shields has walked 12 and struck out 21. Whenever you see a declining K rate and increasing walk rate it’s a sure sign of fatigue. Over that recent five game stretch, Shields’ WHIP has sky-rocketed to 1.44 and his xERA over that span was 5.26. James Shields is a huge risk spotting a tag like the one offered here.
If you’re a regular reader of this section then you were warned plenty of times about the poor skills of Scott Diamond. We’ve been suggesting for months that he won’t last the year in the Twins rotation and sure enough, that pigeon, as they say, has come home to roost. Scott Diamond is now in the minors where he belongs and that has opened up the door for Andrew Albers. Albers' first professional season was in 2008 with the Padres, where he started just five games before suffering an injury that would lead to Tommy John surgery. As a result, he missed all of 2009. After playing independent ball in 2010, the Twins signed Albers to a minor-league contract and the lefty now gets his chance to crack the Twins rotation. Albers is the prototypical Minnesota control and finesse pitcher. He has put up impressive numbers this year during his first Triple-A season and over his last four starts (28.1 IP) Albers has given up just four earned runs with 25/4 K/BB while throwing a complete game on July 26. He can eat up innings and pitch efficiently deep into games. Albers throws strikes with precision command and induces weak contact and lots of groundball outs. He also gets a surprising number of strikeouts considering the lack of overpowering stuff. His best pitch is an 87-91 mph sinker followed by a decent slider and improving change-up. Albers has to rely on pitch mix and pinpoint control to keep hitters off balance but he has learned to do it very effectively. At age 27, Albers has paid his dues. He has great potential because of his precision control with all of his off-speed stuff. Ask any major-league hitter if they would rather face a guy with a straight 98 MPH fastball or a guy with different speeds to all corners of the plate and you would get the same answer 100% of the time. Albers brings that deception along with pin-point command. At Triple-AAA Rochester this season, Albers struck out 116 batters while walking just 32 over 133 frames. He has a great chance to do well in his debut and at this price, he’s worth a wager.

That Cubs offense has been terrible too. Dodgers pitching was nothing special last weekend and they couldn't score. Starting to think that they are wearing down and Soriano's hot production was inflating their #s by maybe a run a game in June/July.

My head and gut say Detroit tonight. Fuck you, head and gut.

Josh Johnson has been terrible lately.

Don't you know? Thats one of the major reasons baseball is such a great sport to wager on. Books react slower in baseball than any other sport.

I've been saying it for years, I don't understand how people lose money betting on baseball if they follow it closely.

-Peralta throws 96mph bullets at the corners and if he can get most of them in the strikezone it will be very tough for the Giants to score a bunch. Matt Cain has been nothing close to himself this year and neither has the bullpen. Taking a chance on Peralta's arm at this price along with the Milwaukee bullpen which has actually been pretty good this year. AT&T Park offers low-scoring, tight games and I think the two offenses are similar in this type of environment.

Coming off of an off day is not nonsense. A losing teams losing record on Wednesdays is rediculous nonsense.

I will note for impressionable gamblers that day of week means less than zero.

I was speaking to an advanced scout for the St Louis Cardinals and he said that his team definitely plays better on Tuesdays when they have the oven roasted chicken special at Subway. Gives the entire team a huge boost.

Reality is that it doesn't really mean much. If by some coincidence a team faces a kershaw, king felix and a david price 3 weeks in a row on a monday, does that mean that they suck on mondays and will not be able to hit a joey blanton or josh johnson the next time out...

The Braves play super hard on Fridays cuz of the big xtra special at mcdonalds

Heard McCann and Uggla eat 4 or 5 at time, leads to much improved power numbers as opposed to Wednesdays when they have the fish special

Let it go boys, no one is going to agree here

I think fellow forum members do agree with one another more on certain days like fridays saturdays and sundays.
But the numbers show that they do not agree with one another as much on mondays tuesdays wednesdays and thursdays.

I half-agree with tuck's use of the days-of-the-week. But if it works for him, then who the fuck cares what I think (or anyone else, for that matter)?

Whats great about Baseball is there are so many ways, angles, systems, formulas, metrics, stats, etc, etc, to
cap a game and to eventually make your selection. Maybe only NBA might have as many ways to look at and cap a game.
