If Muguruza doesn't win a Slam next year, I will honestly be shocked (injuries excepted, of course). Form she's showing here in Singapore plus picking up a veteran coach (who's a proven winner), she's easily proving the most outstanding member of the WTA's new wave. Halep has admitted that, besides her injury hindering her, that this year she's failed to deal with the spotlight being on her in light of her own successes last year. Halep was the vanguard of the new wave, but Mugu has clearly leapfrogged her in my mind. Bencic has been impressive, but she's still only recently popped her head up (only one QF made in 8 Slam appearances), she seems to be a certain top ranker in the future but it's not like this sport hasn't had its share of young chicks (<21 years old) who've failed to grow into the flash of promise they showed when they initially hit the tour.
The Spaniard is a legitimate chance on every Slam surface, it's not like anyone can say she's only got an outside chance on any particular one - I'd say grass is still her most 'worrisome' surface, yet that's the surface she made her first Slam final on. Clearly she likes HC best, and of course there's 2 chances every year to claim a Slam title on that surface. If a player is going to potentially dominate the WTA, they can do a lot worse than have HC be their favourite surface. She has the potential to dominate her generation like Graf/either Williams/Henin/Hingis all did.
