Should UGA Fire Mark Richt?

twinkie13

In transit, arriving late.
Why haven't they yet I say?

This ship has sailed.....

More fun of a question...............

Who do they get?

I heard rumblings of a Jimbo Fisher dealio.......

Scott Frost w/ Major Applewhite as O-coordinator would be a deadly combo. Won't happen, but I would love to see that somewhere.

He has no QB

He has no OC

The danger is that he generally keeps them competitive, so you need to be certain that his replacement is an upgrade

Mark Richt has been good for Georgia but this arrangement has run its course; having no QB or OC is a function of the HC. I think Richt would do well at a lower profile program. As for his replacement, the AD would really have to screw up the hire for a job folks would be lining up to take.

I would think they line up as well. USC might be the top job given LA and all, but for an SEC school UGA seems to be the least "pressure" job of the big ones. I mean Richt has been there quite a while. Athens is also a great town and UGA would have to be a sweet job and the line will be long as you said.:shake:

But hasn't it run it's course. Tenn and FLA have been down and he just hasn't been able to make a push, even with the consistent QB play until recently.

I also saw a terrible stat for him of like 5-17 for games against top 10 opponents( I think this was it.....if someone saw it also feel free to chime in)

I agree that the OC and QB are on him, but we heard all this back in 2010 and then went 10-4 and then 12-2

And don't overestimate the ease of hiring a replacement at a big school - see Kiffen, Sark, Muschamp, Hoke, Willingham, Zook, Callahan, Weis

he's bounced back before. I think he needs the chance to show he can bounce back again like he did in 2011. If he's in the same situation in 12 months time then I'll say yes, he has to go

Remember, Dooley hired Goff.

5-17 against the top ten can't be all that bad. Look at these coaches against just ranked teams:

  • Gus Malzahn (Arkansas State, Auburn): 8-8; .500
  • Bret Bielema (Wisconsin, Arkansas): 12-26; .315
  • Hugh Freeze (Ole Miss): 5-11; .312
  • Gary Pinkel (Toledo, Mizzou): 18-40; .310
  • Dan Mullen (Mississippi State): 4-25; .137
  • Butch Jones (Central Michigan, Cincinnati, Tennessee): 1-16; .058

I'm not going to call it a great move but it's the right move; if UGA fancies themselves (and they do) among the SEC elite, this move is overdue. Yes, they've had 7 (or 8 depending on the poll) top 10 finishes in his 15 years which is good but not great for an elite SEC school. More importantly, they've never won the SEC championship under Richt (unless my memory fails me) and never really been considered a national title contender come late November/December. The year they lost to 'Bama in the SEC championship (2012) was probably their best team and high water mark. Meanwhile Auburn, Florida, 'Bama, LSU have been to multiple national title games and here comes Tennessee and Arkansas...both about to pass UGA. The fact they couldn't dominate the east with both Florida and Tennessee in transition is telling. What have they got to lose? It's not like they're going to become Kentucky or Vanderbilt.

I have zero problem with UGA firing Richt....if they get Patterson, Herman, Fedora, Dantonio

However if they fire Richt and hire MuSmart then yeah it's a massive failure

They won the SEC in 2002 and 2005. They went to the Sugar Bowl as a BCS at-large in 2007, beating an undefeated Hawaii and pumping up the hype train heading into the 2008 season, when they lost 3 games

Thanks for the clarification gps_3; I had a feeling I might be in error and it was confirmed when I heard it on ESPN this morning. I really, really need to stop relying on just my memory anymore. Those two SEC titles seem like a lifetime ago.

They may as well have been a lifetime ago. If you had told someone the collective overall record of Florida and Tennessee the last 6 years, and UGA would only have two appearances in the championship game, they'd be surprised
