SEC Week 2 Discussion

Head of Alabama Department of Decision-Making
I'll be back to add some thoughts, but wanted to get the thread up in case anyone had some thoughts they were itching to share

There's always overreaction to week one. On our home board, a bunch of novices are talking about unloading the bank account on Tenn and Texas because it's free money. I haven't dove in to the lines yet, but the over crossed my mind for Tenn/NCST

Always overreacting...

Of the top teams though, Texas Bama came out with the most complete games.

Georgia, close.

Penn State pretty close too.

No doubt on Bama. You won' find a bigger fan of DeBoer than me, though I'm sure I have company here. Bama's box score was as dominant as anyone's and they did it against what has been a pretty competent G5 team while everyone else was doing it against carefully chosen FCS cannon fodder. I can't even imagine what's DeBoer is going to do with Milroe's ability to drop in the long balls.

Big DeBoer fan too.

That's a guy I always wanted as Jim's successor here.

Bad timing with how this played out.

I be on that OVER

I’m sure everyone watched Sunday Night, in what turned out to be the game of the weekend. 2 Big Name brands in LV. LSU has really been on the wrong side of these games lately and I can tell you many many fans are against this. I’m not one of them. LSU can sell itself and has for years but LSU was really at the forefront of these games. Go look the past 20 years or so. Always taking these games at the hated “neutral site”…Lambeau, LV, TX and ATL and more. LSU will play UCLA this year as well.

To the game, Kelly has to win one of these soon. The Bama game feels a lifetime ago.
Didn’t like his act after the game. That said, all is not lost. There were some definite positives but here are the negatives.

The offensive line was supposed to be a real strong point but they looked rough. The secondary on paper was shitty and looks to be. However, the scheme seems better and just better coached all around.
Why does Harold Perkins ever come out the game? Just dumb.

The offensive play calling wasn’t my favorite, but it was a really good game LSU lost. That’s kinda it.

Harold Perkins is an interesting case. He's kind of suited, size and skill, for pretty much one thing, getting after the passer. He's not big enough to shed blocks effectively and consistently from the middle, and even as an every down player on the edge, he could be a liability against the run over the course of a game. But as a pin your ears back and go attack the ball defender, there aren't many better.

I get what you mean, but LSU is too deficient elsewhere to have him off the field.

Oh I don't blame LSU for playing him as much as possible. He's an incredible athlete and a very good football player. It's just he's a bit of a tweener size wise. I wonder if he'll be an edge guy in the NFL, or could even be a safety?

Definitely a tweener. Rush specialist in NFL, don’t see every down at this stage.

I definitely know I’m preaching to the choir here, but look at Sage Ryan. Fuxking 5 star that can’t play football man. I’m sure he is supremely athletic and runs fine drills with the best of them, but he’s a terrible football player. Can’t find the ball. It’s college and you want to prepare kids for next level but don’t let it be at the expense of the team.
Not trying to compare the two at all, just saying you gotta kinda do what’s best now, too.

LSU gave that game away Twinkie. Why keep trying to run in the later part of the 2nd half. The pass defense for USC was outmatched. I said this before we threw up all over ourselves. Onward, the defense will definitely be more effective than the past 5+ years. Not that, that says a ton but yes plenty to look forward too. It is possible USC has a pretty good team. The Miles like stubbornness of Kelly in that game was very concerning though. Really hope they adjust accordingly. We should have a month to work things out.

For the record, that fist pounding acting job in the post game was shocking to see. If only he were half as mad as he pretended he was. Stop blaming the players asshat.

Amen on all of this.

Weird coaching game, both ways at times.

“Gave away” is tough for me to say, even fanatically. USC is probably pretty good and we are #3-4-5 SEC. As of today.
Like BAR said weird coaching. And I don’t totally disagree with you, meaning the play calling left some desire for sure. I’ve heard some say it was a Sloan loss all the way. Could be, it was a close game.

Messy is lucky it's a night game in Tempe to avoid direct sun but with that it was still 113 tonight at my place at 7pm

Pretty low humidity though

Unclear why ASU is laying almost a TD.. Wyoming was trash last week- threw pick 6 play 2 of the game.. ASU did some short throws, but never really challenged downfield.. starter is still RS Frosh.. no reason Miss St O can't throw up enough points here to keep it close

Yeah line says ASU or stay far away which is what I'm doing. I'd expect ASU to be a mid-P12 team if it still existed this season, not sure how they fare in the B12 but doubt they suck completely. Messy I don't think is good. FWIW ASU have never beaten an SEC team (I was actually at the fluke LSU win a bunch of years ago) and they are building it up as an us vs the world type game around the Valley lol.

Whatever it is, it will be really hot and no play here.

Been a little busy this week, so I wasn't around much.

I don't have much of an opinion on Texas @ Michigan. It's been covered in other threads really well, so no need to hash it out here. For me personally, I can't back either team at the current number (Tex -6.5 at my shop). I definitely lean taking the points, but I'd like over a TD. Right now I plan to watch and maybe make a live or HT bet.

I'm on UGA under 64.5. I used to bet Alabama unders in this exact same scenario and think it will work for UGA too. Coming off a marquee game against an FCS team, Kirby will want the backups and a running clock as soon as possible. This has 52-3 written all over it

Tonight in Tuscaloosa, they are dedicating the field to Saban. I expect a pretty good crowd for this one. Add in the way the game last year went @ South Florida, with Milroe getting benched and not playing, and I think we'll see a pretty intense Alabama side. I'm laying the 31

I was all set to bet AU, but the line movement has me concerned. Need to dive into this a little bit.

I've heard that Dart is out for Ole Miss today, but haven't confirmed. I was looking to take Ole Miss again

I'm on the over in tenn/ncst. Watched some analysis on Nico this week, and while the consensus is that he is going to be very good, there were situations against Chattanooga where his processing was a little slow, as would be expected for a young QB. I think Heupel can scheme enough to get him in favorable situations. And while I would favor the Tenn DL over the NCSt OL, I think they can score on Tenn too

I think I'm going to take the points with South Carolina. For whatever reason, Beamer has had Stoops' number over the last 2 seasons.

No other real opinions, other than I kind of want to take Arkansas as a DD dog

Good luck to everyone

Great post gps. Wish I would've seen it earlier. May have laid off of one (Kentucky) and added another (Arkansas). Good luck sir.
