A century and a half of racing history will come alive this summer when Saratoga Race Course opens its gates on Friday, July 19, for the 40-day meet that brings together the finest horses, top jockeys, and best trainers in the country in celebration of the track’s 150[SUP]th[/SUP] anniversary.
Since its first thoroughbred meet in August, 1863, nearly all of racing’s legends have traversed the Spa’s famous oval, from Man o’War to Kelso, Beldame to Rachel Alexandra, Personal Ensign to Sky Beauty and Easy Goer to Curlin, all of whom will be recognized as part of the anniversary festivities.
With the Grade 1, $1 million Travers on August 24 as its centerpiece, the 2013 meet offers 53 listed and graded stakes races worth $14.95 million. Supporting the “Mid-Summer Derby” are 15 additional Grade 1 races, beginning with the $300,000 TVG Coaching Club American Oaks for 3-year-old fillies on July 20 and concluding with the $300,000 Hopeful for juveniles on closing day, Monday, September 2.
“Saratoga’s unsurpassed stakes schedule, which this year is worth nearly $15 million; the 2-year-old program, which serves as a launching pad for many of our sport’s future stars, and its long-standing tradition of turf racing on our two courses make it unique among racetracks,” said P.J. Campo, NYRA’s vice-president and director of racing. “Last year, champions Wise Dan, Shanghai Bobby, Questing, Royal Delta and Trinniberg all raced here, as did Orb, Oxbow and Palace Malice, who combined to win all three legs of this year’s Triple Crown. We’re proud of the quality of Saratoga racing, and we expect racing fans to respond enthusiastically to the product.”
The leading trainers on The New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA) circuit will make their annual trek north for the meet, including national leaders Todd Pletcher, Chad Brown – a native of nearby Mechanicville, N.Y. – Christophe Clement, David Jacobson and Linda Rice, as well as Hall of Famers Shug McGaughey, Nick Zito and Bill Mott, the latter of whom will try to continue the tradition of winning a race on his birthday, July 29.
Augmenting the powerful New York contingent is an array of the top trainers from across the country, including Tom Amoss, Wayne Catalano, Eddie Kenneally, Charles LoPresti, Michael Matz, Graham Motion, Kenny McPeek, Dale Romans, Al Stall, and Ian Wilkes. Hall of Famers Bob Baffert, D. Wayne Lukas and Jonathan Sheppard maintain strings at the Spa, with John Shireffs, newly relocated to New York, stabled there for the first time this year.
All will be vying for the H. Allen Jerkens training title, taken for the third straight time last year by Pletcher.
Accompanying McGaughey, Lukas and Pletcher to Saratoga will be the three winners of this year’s Triple Crown – Kentucky Derby hero Orb, Preakness winner Oxbow and Belmont victor Palace Malice, who could use the Grade 2, $600,000 Jim Dandy on July 27 and the Travers as telling arguments for divisional supremacy.
Making Saratoga their summer home as well will be 2012’s Horse of the Year Wise Dan and Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Fort Larned, who on August 3 will try to become the first horse to put together back-to-back victories in the Grade 1, $750,000 Whitney invitational Handicap since Discovery, who won it three straight times from 1934-36.
For 2-year-olds, Saratoga is indeed the summer place to be; Orb, Oxbow and Palace Malice all ran at the Spa last summer. This summer will see the usual plethora of classy juvenile races including the traditional six-pack of graded stakes: theGrade 3, $150,000 Schuylerville (July 19), Grade 2, $200,000 Adirondack (August 11) and Grade 1, $300,000 Spinaway (September 1) for fillies along with the Grade 2, $200,00 Sanford (July 21), Grade 2, $200,000 Saratoga Special (August 11) and aforementioned Hopeful, taken last year by eventual juvenile champion Shanghai Bobby.
Top-notch turf racing is traditional at the Spa, with the Grade 1, $600,000 Diana for fillies and mares on July 27 and the Grade 1, $600,000 Sword Dancer Invitational on July 27 capping the multitude of daily grass race offerings. Steeplechase racing as well gets a chance to shine, with the top jumpers in North America and abroad assembling for the Grade 1 A. P. Smithwick Memorial on August 1 and the Grade 1 New York Turf Writers’ Cup on August 22.
Competition for the Angel Cordero, Jr. riding title is expected to be fierce, as the always-tough New York jockey colony looks to fill the shoes of the retired Ramon Dominguez, who won last year’s title with a record 68 winners. Among them are Hall of Famer John Velazquez, a five-time winner who is poised to surpass Jerry Bailey as the all-time leading jockey (1976-2013) at Saratoga; Javier Castellano, who has been runner-up the past three years; Derby-winning rider Joel Rosario; brothers Irad Ortiz, Jr. and Jose Ortiz, and Rosie Napravnik, who will rejoin the New York colony for the summer.

Looking back @ 2012 Saratoga Meet:


Jockeys

Junior Alvarado: won 23 races, only 8/108 (7%) Turf races though.
Rajiv Maragh: 5/106 (5%) Turf races.
Irad Ortiz: 5/112 (4%) Turf races.
Alan Garcia: 3/51 (6%) Turf races.


Trainers

Asmussen: Usually very good w/ juveniles but only 2/24 (8%) w/ 2 yo's during 2012 Saratoga Meet.
Brown, Chad: 5/21 (24%) 2 yo's and 15/21 (71%) in the $ w/ 2 yo's. 24/66 (36%) Turf, 7/17 (41%) Alw, 5/14 (36%) Stakes races and 79% in the $ in Stakes races. Chad basically just wins alot period @ Saratoga, was better in routes than sprints 2012 meet. 4/30 (13%) sprints [up to 7F] and 25/65 (38%) routes [1 Mile and further].
Clement: Not known as a 2 yo trainer but 2/7 (29%) 2012.
Dutrow, Anthony: For the 2nd year in a row had another great Saratoga in 2012, 39-11-7-3 (28% winners and 54% in the $). 9/27 (33%) sprints.
Kenneally: 2/11 (18%) 2 yo's.
Levine: Not known as Turf trainer but 4/18 (22%) Turf 2012.
McLaughlin: 5/10 (50%) in Stakes but only 3/39 (8%) in all other races. Hasnt done well in past years at Saratoga w/ 2 yo's and 2012 was no different going 1/15 (7%) w/ 2 yo's.
Mott: 1/30 (3%) 2 yo's, 2/55 (4%) mdn and clm races and 1/26 (4%) sprints.
Pletcher: won w/ 22 different 2 yo's, 23/67 (34%) w/ 2 yo's but just 4/47 (9%) w/ 3 yo's and up.
Rodriguez, Rudy: 3/11 (27%) 2 yo's.
Weaver: Strong meet in 2012 going 11/58 (19%), i always think of him as a turf trainer but went 5/18 (28%) dirt races, 2/11 (18%) 2 yo's. Avg win payoff $13.70


Cold trainers 2012 Meet: J Englehart, Tagg, Badgett and Stewart all were 0 for the meet, Wesley Ward was 2 for 40+, Motion was 2 for 50.

trainers that did well towards end of meet: Maker, Tom Bush and Terranova.

The best 2 yo ive seen so far this year is Debt Ceiling and im really looking forward to seeing him run at Saratoga. He looked good winning the G3 Bashford Manor @ CD but if anyone gets a chance or cares to watch his race from Pimlico on Preakness Day (5/18 R4), unreal...big wide move, circled field and finished under wraps...seemed to have even more in tank if needed.
 
One of the biggest (if not THE biggest) streak @ Saratoga is that a 2 yo colt or filly sired by AP Indy has never won a race of 6f or less @ Saratoga.

Will happen one year but every meet you get at least one or two of these that are very big favs...i'll continue to fade them.
 
If Saratoga is nearly here, that should mean Del Mar can't be far behind.
 
Del Mar and Saratoga should never be used in the same sentence...lol

Cali racing has really went way down hill, no money to be made w/ short fields.

going down to saratoga for a buddies bachelor party july 25-28...looking forward to it...have been to the kentucky derby before but i think i'm looking forward to this as much..i don't know much about horses but i hear it is a horse racing town, got a lot of history

Very excited for this upcoming meet. Actually just got back from my first visit to Saratoga and can't wait to get back when they are racing. Got a tour around Bill Mott's stables and checked out the horse I just bought a share of in a partnership. Sanctify, a 2 year old Pulpit colt out of a Distorted Humor mare.

this is great news, in good hands w/ Mott...i used to have small piece (5%) of a couple...but was involved w/ wrong people so had to get out...a buddy of mine formed a syndicate and if i ever get involved again thats the route im going...this is for fun only and best way to go about owning...w/ small risk involved. Keep me updated, please! Bol bud.
 
yes, in action almost every day...may skip a couple of Weds and Thurs but still may have some thoughts or spot plays on those days too.

Sar tt works are always on the slower side (1 sec off at least) due to the Oklahoma Training Track being such a deep surface

Can't wait PTW! I actually almost bought a horse from Gallo a couple years ago. Anyone have thoughts on that? Seems like very low chance of making much money, but a lot of fun

Thanks a lot play, I had been checking out several syndicates for a while and then I saw this offering and that Mott was the trainer and decided to take the plunge and get the experience, I only have a 6% piece and a buddy of mine has 3%. As you said this is for fun only. I'll keep you updated every step of the way.

He was geared up to run in a couple of weeks, the 28th or 29th, but has a swollen tendon in his ankle after the last work, so he's not gonna be doing anything for 3-4 weeks, maybe go down to Fair Hill for some treatment. Probably looking to run in the Belmont meet, kind of disappointing he won't be running in Toga but can't rush anything obviously.

I just bought in on a horse with Gallo's Parting Glass Racing, not really expecting to make any money, doing it for the experience and fun.

most places...around $500 to get started, one share...then around $40 monthly - depending on number of partners and how many shares you have...

Main advice i can offer to all...NEVER get involved w/ Karakorum Racing.
 
Parting Glass could be more $ than most, mainly because they buy pricey yearlings...other syndicates could be a bit cheaper...
 
Yeah, I wanted to say it was 1k or 2k that I was going to get in on, but I don't remember any monthly costs.
 
1k could be 2 shares but they are pricey and limit partnerships making more expensive...shop around...some win more than others, some win less but allow for hands on experience
 
I did a bunch of looking around and there are partnerships that start at $500 per share and others that are $50,000 per share, so it varies greatly. If you interested shop around and find a place you feel comfortable with. Here's a pretty good list of public syndicates:

So, last week I promised to conduct the definitive study of turf sprints at Saratoga. I have gone back and researched the past three years -- 140 races -- and while some of the results are what I expected, some were quite surprising.
For all the bettors who bemoan the presence of turf sprints at Saratoga because the results seem chaotic, consider that 49 favorites won out of 140 races resulting in a healthy 35 percent batting average for the chalk. That said, the average win price was $14.38, which is way above average for the favorite's win percentage. The mode winning price was $8.90.
There were few surprises in the trainers' category. Linda Rice has the most wins in the past three years -- 16 -- and yet only four of them were favored. This is pretty surprising as she clearly dominates these races but the betting public is not using her as much as you would think.
Rice had 10 winners in 2010, only one in 2011 and bounced back last year with five winners. In 2010 and 2011 she used a variety of riders, but in 2012 all five of her winners were ridden by Cornelio Velasquez.
Todd Pletcher had nine winners with six of them ridden by Johnny Velazquez and three by Javier Castellano. Chad Brown had eight with three of them ridden by Castellano and three by Ramon Dominguez.

With the jockeys, it was no surprise that Dominguez was the leader with 21 turf sprint wins. As usual, he won for 12 different trainers so it's going to be hard to predict where the business will go now that Dominguez is retired. Castellano had 18 turf sprint wins for 11 different trainers while Velazquez had 14, with six coming from Pletcher.
Velazquez surprised me with his 14 wins since I don't think of him as a turf sprint rider, but six of the 14 wins came aboard favorites. If you bet me who has more turf sprint wins at Saratoga the past three years, Johnny Velazquez or Cornelio Velasquez, I would have bet Cornelio and I would have lost. Even with the Rice business, he only had 10 turf sprint wins.

Pedigrees, or more specifically, sire lines, was another big surprise. With Rice being the clear leader among the trainers, you would think that City Zip would be one of the leading sires of turf sprinters, but he only has one winner in the past three years. Freud has four winners, three of them trained by Rice.
The leading sire of turf sprint winners at Saratoga the past three years is Speightstown, which should come as no surprise considering how fast he was and that his sire, Gone West, is a strong turf influence.
The real surprise here is that the second-leading sire at Saratoga the past three years is Grand Reward with five winners. This is due to the fact that one of his progeny, Isn'tlovejustgrand, won three times and another, One Note Samba, won twice.
The rest of the winning sires are spread out, with Stormy Atlantic having four and a bunch having three winners.

Post positions in turf sprints at Saratoga are a critical factor in handicapping. For years, we have seen a pronounced negative bias against the rail but that began to change some last year. For the 140 turf sprints run the past three years at Saratoga, the average field size was 9.02 and the average winning post position was 5.18, which means that there is a tilt toward the outside where the winners are breaking from.
Post position 1 has the least amount of winners for the first eight post positions with 10. In 2010, there were only two winners who broke from the rail that won, in 2011 there was only one, but in 2012 there were seven winners breaking from the rail. Overall, the rail is not the place to be and it makes some sense the way these races are run.
If you draw the rail, you either have to gun to the front to maintain your inside position against the outside speed flow, or drop back and try to find a seam to run through in the stretch. The horse that makes the lead from the inside is under constant pressure, so even at the short distance of 5 1/2 furlongs he never gets a chance to relax and many of them tire in the stretch. The horses that come from behind on the inside face traffic while traveling at a high speed.
The post position with the most turf sprint wins the past three years is 5 with 19 winners. Post positions 2 and 4 produced 18 winners.

The average winning time for the 140 turf sprints run at Saratoga going 5 1/2 furlongs was a very fast 1:02.73. Half the races were run faster than 1:02.71 and half were run slower than 1:02.71. Sub :45 first half-miles are the rule, not the exception, so this gives you a better understanding in analyzing final times and pace scenarios.
The fastest 5 1/2-furlong turf sprint run at Saratoga was Fiddlers Patriot, who stopped the teletimer in 1:00.59 on August 30, 2010, despite breaking from post 10. The slowest was Goldzar, who caught a soft turf course in the Ecclesiastic Stakes on September 5, 2011, when he took 1:07.28.
Another thing I looked at was the placement of the temporary rail. You would think that the farther out the temporary rail is placed, the slower the race will be due to the extra ground covered around the turn, but the effect of the temporary rail placement on the winning times is negligible.

Course condition is a much bigger factor on final winning times. In 115 races where the course was listed as "Firm," the average winning time was 1:02.53. In 25 races on courses listed as anything but "Firm," the average winning time was 1:03.60.
So what does it all mean? You can embrace these races like any others on the card. Form holds up but there is still good value to bet into. I will still avoid post 1 unless it is a horse with a proven, extreme running style.
With Dominguez retired, I think that Rosario and Lezcano will pick up the slack. Storm Cat sire lines do well in them, and Rice is always worth following as turf sprints have become her specialty.

He looked good winning the G3 Bashford Manor @ CD but if anyone gets a chance or cares to watch his race from Pimlico on Preakness Day (5/18 R4), unreal...big wide move, circled field and finished under wraps...seemed to have even more in tank if needed.

Palace Malice – handily winning this year’s GI Belmont Stakes at Belmont Park!

Palace Malice, the 2013 GI Belmont Stakes winner looks headed for a July 27th start in the $600,000, GII Jim Dandy Stakes, going 1 1/8 mile at Saratoga next as he preps for a late August collision with Preakness winner Oxbow and Kentucky Derby winner Orb in the GI Travers Stakes.

Overanalyze, this year’s GI Arkansas Derby winner, then 11th in the Derby and 7th in the Belmont will find the cut back here to 1 1/8 mile probably more to his liking!
Incognito, 4th in the GI Belmont Stakes is on the improve as this son of A.P.Indy could be a major player here!
Perfect Title, out of Perfect Soul and a Monarchos mare, won a top 1x 3yo alw at Churchill last out going 1 1/8 mile in a good 1:50.3. A big step up in class here for this budding 3yo!
Freedom Child, winner of a sloppy GII Peter Pan Stakes at Belmont 2 back then came 13th in the Belmont last out and for intentional purposes with eased after vying for the early lead that day to come across the line 58 lengths back. If he is ready again than the Belmont experience should not be a factor for him as he too will like this 1 1/8 mile course cut back!
Will Take Charge, winner of the GII Rebel stakes at Oaklawn beating Oxbow in that thrilling finish, ran in all 3 Triple Crown races this year but finishing well off the board and double digits back in each race. He too, may find the 1 1/8 mile more to his liking!
Micromanage, winner of the Long Branch Stakes at Monmouth Park last out by 4 1/2 lengths might go in the GI Haskell there too. Some choice he has, does he want to go against Oxbow in the Haskell or Palace Malice in this Jim Dandy Stakes?
There’s still almost 2 more weeks for other top 3yo talent to toe up to the line here at Saratoga on July 27th as we’d expect good-sized field to show up for this year’s GII Jim Dandy Stakes, the local prep for the Mid-Summer Derby in the $1,000,000 GI Travers Stakes here late next month

Longines Kentucky Oaks (gr. I) victress Princess of Sylmar and Unlimited Budget, who recently ran sixth in the June 8 Belmont Stakes (gr. I), top a quality field of five sophomore fillies for the $300,000 TVG Coaching Club American Oaks (gr. I) July 20 at Saratoga Race Course.
Princess of Sylmar has not raced since upsetting the May 3 Oaks at odds of 38-1, and the 1 1/8-mile CCA Oaks will prove a prime testing ground as she makes her second start in grade I company. The CCA Oaks is also a chance at redemption for Unlimited Budget, a three-time graded stakes winner who was undefeated until her Kentucky Oaks third and subsequent off-the-board finish against the boys.
Todd Pletcher trains both Princess of Sylmar, a daughter of Majestic Warrior owned by King of Prussia Stable, and Unlimited Budget, a Street Sense filly who races for Repole Stable. Princess of Sylmar took the Busher Stakes and Busanda at Aqueduct Racetrack by open lengths before finishing second to Close Hatches in the Gazelle (gr. II) en route to her Kentucky Oaks win. Unlimited Budget won the Demosielle Stakes (gr. II) at Aqueduct and took the Rachel Alexandra (gr. III) and the Fair Grounds Oaks (gr. II) at Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots.

Michael Dubb's grade III stakes winner My Happy Face is another strong contender. Saratoga racing fans will recall the daughter of Tiz Wonderful from her 21 1/4-length maiden victory last summer sprinting 5 1/2 furlongs at the Spa. Since then, she was second by a hard-fought head to Dreaming of Julia in the Frizette Stakes (gr. I) at Belmont, won the Tempted (gr. III) at Aqueduct, was runner-up to Kauai Katie in the Jan. 26 Forward Gal (gr. II) at Gulfstream Park, and returned to Belmont to take the June 13 Lotka Stakes going a mile in just her second start of the season for trainer Chad Brown.

Spendthrift Farm's Cue the Moon was fourth in the May 27 Acorn Stakes (gr. I) last time out, and third in the Gulfstream Oaks (gr. I) before that. The lightly-raced Malibu Moon filly seeks her first win for trainer H. James Bond since breaking her maiden last September at the Spa by half a length over eventual grade I winner Emollient. In her only other start as a 2-year-old, she ran second in the Tempted by a neck to My Happy Face.

Alex and JoAnn Lieblong's Marathon Lady completes the field. Since breaking her maiden for trainer Steve Hobby at Oaklawn Park this February, the daughter of Graeme Hall has been competitive in graded stakes. She finished second in the Fathead Bourbonette Oaks (gr. III) at Turfway Park, third in the Fantasy Stakes (gr. III) at Oaklawn, second by a neck to Fiftyshadesofhay in the Black-Eyed Susan Stakes (gr. II) at Pimlico Race Course, and third in the Mother Goose Stakes (gr. I) at Belmont.

After a fifth-place finish in the June 5 RTN True North Handicap (gr. III) at Belmont Park, Michael Dubb and Gary Aisquith's Sage Valley looks to get back to winning ways in the $100,000 James Marvin Handicap (gr. III) on July 19, opening day at Saratoga Race Course.
Sage Valley returned from a layup with a driving 2 1/4-length victory in the May 18 Maryland Sprint Handicap (gr. III) for trainer Rudy Rodriguez, building a four-race win streak which was subsequently snapped by his True North loss. The 4-year-old son of Discreet Cat had been on the sidelines before the Maryland Sprint after taking the Sept. 9 seven-furlong Mr. Nasty overnight stakes at Aqueduct Racetrack by 6 3/4 lengths.
Sage Valley carries 123 pounds as the highweight in a field of nine in the seven-furlong James Marvin, breaking from post 4 under jockey Cornelio Velasquez. The Marvin is race 8 of 10 with an approximate post time of 4:47 p.m. EDT and immediately precedes the $150,000 Schuylerville Stakes (gr. III) for 2-year-old fillies.
Live Oak Plantation's Souper Speedy, declared the winner of the Jaipur Stakes at Belmont Park on June 7, has also done well after taking time off to regroup. The lightly-raced 4-year-old Indian Charlie colt has been first, second, or third in all but one of his seven lifetime starts, and was runner-up by three-quarters of a length to O'Prado Again in the 2011 Remsen (gr. II). He finished second by a head to Big Screen but was placed in front of his contender after that one was disqualified for interference in the stretch.
"He's has two good races in a row since he's been away," trainer Tom Albertrani said of Souper Speedy, who was off from November of 2012 until April. "The horse has come back very well, so this race looks like an ideal spot."
Politicallycorrect finished third in the Jaipur Stakes for Kenneth and Sarah Ramsey and trainer Wesley Ward. The 4-year-old son of Kitten's Joy hasn't won since the Nov. 3 Damascus Stakes at Santa Anita Park.
B J D Thoroughbreds' 4-year-old Political Force gelding Right to Vote took the June 29 Kelly's Landing Stakes, run at the James Marvin distance at Churchill Downs, by five lengths for trainer Ron Moquett.
Laurie's Rocket was runner-up in the Kelly's Landing for Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas and owner Willis Horton, and before that had a string of thirds in the True North, Maryland Sprint, and Churchill Downs Stakes (gr. III). The 4-year-old son of Bluegrass Cat looks back to March 23 for his most recent victory, the Count Fleet Stakes at Oaklawn Park.
Drawing Away Stable and David Jacobson's Strapping Groom has been running competitively at Belmont and was claimed for $35,000 by his new connections two starts back. On June 26 the 6-year-old son of Johannesburg wired the 6 1/2-furlong Lion Cavern overnight stakes by 3 1/2 lengths.
John D. Gunther and Eurowest Bloodstock Services' homebred Jaguar Paw exits a 5 3/4-length romp for trainer Chad Brown in the June 14 Three Coins Up Stakes going 1 1/8 miles at Belmont. He shortens up to this distance for the first time since August of 2012 when he was eighth in the Play The King Stakes (Can-IIT) on Woodbine turf.
Kasey K Racing Stable and Brier Creek Farm's Hello Lover finished third by 1 1/4 lengths in the June 22 Donald LeVine Memorial Handicap going the James Marvin distance at Parx Racing after winning a 1 1/16-mile starter at Pimlico Race Course on May 18 for trainer Robert Reed Jr.
Willyconker, claimed for $62,500 last time out winning a mile turf race at Betfair Hollywood Park on May 25, starts for the first time for Southern Equine Stable and Eric Guillot. The 6-year-old Pyrus gelding upset the 2012 Frank E. Kilroe Mile Stakes (gr. IT) last March on the Santa Anita turf at odds of 10-1.

Pletcher has won four editions of the six-furlong sprint for juvenile fillies—in 2002 with Freedom's Daughter, 2003 with Ashado, 2006 with Cotton Blossom, and 2011 with Georgie's Angel—and sends out the coupled entry of homebred Elena Strikes and $200,000 yearling purchase Yes Liz for Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings in this year's renewal.
Elena Strikes, by Smart Strike , broke her maiden at first asking June 22 at Monmouth Park as the odds-on favorite in a five-furlong sprint against five others. She rated off the pace, advanced three wide into contention, bid on the turn, and drew clear to win by 2 3/4 lengths under jockey Joe Bravo in a final time of :59.44. Jockey Javier Castellano gets the mount from post 2 for this filly's second start.

"I think she'll appreciate the added distance where she can break and not have to be rushed," said Pletcher. "She's a filly who has shown a lot of quality. She has been training really well up here and she has a good mind. She has been doing well since that maiden race."


Yes Liz, purchased at the 2013 Ocala Breeders' Sales Co.'s select sale of 2-year-olds in training, was an even more impressive winner of her July 3 debut going the same distance at Belmont Park. The daughter of Yes It's True latched on to a contender and sparred for the lead before obtaining it, kicking away through five furlongs in :57.99 under Hall of Fame jockey Edgar Prado. Fellow Hall of Famer John Velazquez will be in the irons this time from the 6 hole.

"She's pretty straightforward," Pletcher remarked. "She's very fast. She's a precocious kind of filly. We expected that type of performance from her. She has good gate speed. She came out of that race really well. That's why we thought about running her back."

Pletcher, whose domination with his 2-year-olds last year was a key factor in his third straight H. Allen Jerkens training title, did not think a repeat of 2012 was forthcoming but was hopeful for continued success.

"So far, the 2-year-olds are running well," said the trainer, whose 2012 juveniles included stakes winners Shanghai Bobby, Kauai Katie, Dreaming of Julia, Overanalyze, Violence and 2013 Belmont Stakes (gr. I) winner Palace Malice. "As usual, we come in at the end of April or the beginning of May and look to bring a lot of 2-year-olds. Historically, it has always been a place to get horses ready. They seem to be doing well here. We're hopeful, but we also know how hard it is to win races here. We had an unbelievable meet with 2-year-olds last year. I think it's next to impossible to repeat the kind of numbers we had last year. We have to see and hope for the best. Hopefully, we will have some success."


The Schuylerville drew a well-matched field of seven, all but one victorious last time out. Brad Gould Jr. and Hidden Hill Farm's Maryland-bred Great Notion filly Jonesin for Jerry sparkled five furlongs in :57.88 June 29 at Delaware Park, drawing off smartly to a six-length wire-to-wire win in her second start for trainer John Robb.

Wayne Sanders and Larry Hirsch's Bahnah, a daughter of Elusive Quality , won a 4 1/2-furlong sprint at Churchill Downs by the same margin on June 6 with a handy closing move first time out for trainer Bret Calhoun.

Bugle Hill Racing Partnership's Brazen Persuasion was also a solid debut winner at the Schuylerville distance; she took a June 29 maiden special weight at Churchill by 4 3/4 lengths after racing closest to the pace and drawing off late under steady urging in her second try for trainer Steve Asmussen. The Indian Charlie filly is the most expensive purchase in the field. She also came from the 2013 OBS select sale of 2-year-olds in training and cost $210,000.

St. Elias Stable and West Point Thoroughbreds' True Blue Nation, a daughter of Bluegrass Cat , handled her first start impressively as well, going wire-to-wire in a five-furlong sprint at Belmont June 21 to score her first victory for trainer Tom Albertrani by 5 1/4 lengths at odds of 17-1. An $85,000 yearling purchase, True Blue Nation went the distance in :58.26.
"She was very impressive first time out," said Albertrani. "Normally, I don't really crank on the 2-year-olds to come out running first time out, but if they do, all the better. I would always expect a better performance second time around, so we were very pleased with that effort first time out."

Albertrani, who described True Blue Nation as a "very, very quiet" filly, said he was pleasantly surprised by her performance.

"If you'd looked at her workouts before the race, you'd never get any indication that she would come out with that kind of speed," he said. "She was one of two fillies of mine in the race, and the other filly (Aldero, who was fifth) had been working a little better. In the afternoons, you don't know what to expect, so I was very, very happy to see her come out running like that. Let's hope she'll take another step forward."


Bowman Racing's Silver Valley is the lone contender with stakes experience in the field and the only one not coming off a win. The Silver Train filly was an impressive maiden winner first out going five furlongs May 25 at Lone Star Park, but ran fourth after breaking slow in the six-furlong Debutante Stakes at Churchill on June 22.

What's your daily capping day like bud? You buy the racing form the afternoon before and go over each race? Or do you target the Stakes races?

Just curious. Maybe ill bump into ya up there.

on drunk days cant cap til am...and usually at the track while watching workouts...but yeah, form first thing in AM...once i get me feet under me i'll be a couple days ahead of game by buying pp's from drf 72 hrs ahead...always ahead though by reading overnights...spend many hours on a single card, i cap pp's...then watch many replays, look over trip notes that i keep and look into trainer patterns...good and bad, then try to make a strategy for that particular card...do i love one horse on that card, do i love a pk 3 or pk 4 sequence?

into all the races, not just stakes...w/ stakes races i like to know who's targeting what though...and seem to do pretty good in those races because form tend to hold up more than say in a $35 claimer, lol

Tough to do this day before, but gonna be the case most times...when i pick day before, unless otherwise stated turf races are turf only...shouldnt happen opening day as temps gonna be mid 90's but for the future...

As for 7/19 card:

Race #1: #12 Hardest Cove is my top pick...improved since stretching out in distance and adding lasix and exits a 2nd place finish vs Stormy Len, who is stakes caliber and ran great in G3 @ Arl in last.

Race #2: #10 Volcano Run is top choice, trainer off 2 solid Saratoga meets and Volcano Run off two tough trips...other i'll use in multi race bets are: #1,4,8,12 and if #13 draws in.

Race #3: Pletcher horses are obvious, one will run...1A Our Amazing Rose could be the goods based on 2yo in training purchase price and she worked 9 4/5 secs in a 1F work at those sales...other one i'll be using and should be a decent price is #3 Predicate...broke from rail in debut (very tough for 1ster, esp 2yo 1sters to break from rail...angle i love) and trainer better 2nd out than 1st, only horse in field w/ race under belt...possible edge, those that don't know...same owner that had I'll Have Another.

Race #5: #2 Flying K C has to be on my tickets...trainer w/ poor 1ster stats but wins w/ 2yo 1sters at Saratoga, won w/ 2yo 1ster on opening day last year...could happen again here.

Race #7: still not settled on this race but i know i'll be using #7 New Line, who is a cut back and that is a very dangerous angle at this meet in extended sprints (6.5F and 7F).

Race #8: #3 Souper Speedy prolly best in here but i have to use #1 Politicallycorrect...who exits two races on off tracks and a G1 race...previous form and dynamics of race put him in this race despite breaking from rail going 7F.

Race #9: most like #4 and #5, i'll use both on some multi race tickets but i like #4 Brazen Persuasion better than #5 Bahnah...Asmussen usually good w/ 2yo's, struggled at meet last year w/ 2 yo's but may have good stock this year judging by his 11 2yo wins @ CD...big edge on #5 already winning at 6f as compared to 4.5f.

Race #10: #6 Birchwood Road is one of my top bets on card, based on pp's figured last out was a good prep for today off layoff then watched replay and saw...after very awkward start moved up on inside (drew within 4 1/4 lengths) just to get shuffled on inside...tough trip and w/ that race under belt off bench could be serious contender in the finale at a price...esp vs this weak bunch.
 
I love that angle as well, P2W. 2nd time starters who had the rail in their debut. Nothing worse than having the #1 hole 1st time out.
