[h=1]Steve Davidowitz's Withers Stakes analysis[/h]Grade 3, $250,000 Withers Stakes, 1 1/16 miles, Aqueduct inner track, Feb. 1
(10 Derby eligibility points to the winner, 4 for second, 2 for third, 1 for fourth)

Only six were in the starting gate, including two New York-breds, Samraat and Uncle Sigh, and they dominated the race from flag fall to finish.
Samraat broke to the lead from post 5, but Uncle Sigh quickly took over along the rail to begin a racelong duel that would leave the rest of the field out of contention.
Samraat had won his three prior starts, including a 16 3/4-length score in the Damon Runyon at a mile and 70 yards for statebreds Dec. 18. The performance earned a 95 Beyer Speed Figure. Uncle Sigh had two prior races: A sharp second in a six-furlong maiden race on Dec. 7 which earned a 95 Beyer and a 14 1/2-length victory in a mile and 70-yard maiden race which earned a 93. None of the other four in the Withers had earned anything higher than an 85.
Given the ease of his three prior victories, Samraat passed an important test here, gaining valuable seasoning dealing with a dead game Uncle Sigh, who stubbornly led his rival by a half-length from the clubhouse turn to the quarter pole. Through the stretch, the pair continued stride for stride until Samraat finally edged away to score by a length in 1:46.31 to earn a 94 Beyer Fig.
Uncle Sigh was a slight favorite, but both horses went off at 1.15-1 odds and cut out faster-than-par splits through the first six furlongs in 1:12.77. Apparently the competitive effort did take its toll, because the dueling pair began to slow down reaching the mile in 1:39.06 with Samraat finishing his final sixteenth in a pedestrian 7.25.

The implication from the way the race was run is that both of these lightly raced horses have the talent to compete in similar races at similar or slightly longer distances. Yet if either should get caught in another speed duel against tougher competition, he could be vulnerable.
Given the way Samraat handled Uncle Sigh in the final furlong, he looked the stronger of the two. Yet, the result might have been different had Uncle Sigh been outside, not pinned to the inside of his rival.
Consider the performances of Classic Giacnroll and the maiden Scotland, who previously had finished second and third to Noble Moon in a hard-fought renewal of the Jerome stakes at a mile 70 yards on Jan. 4.
As noted in my report for the Jerome, Scotland seemed intimidated racing inside of Noble Moon, giving way late to finish third, 2 1/2 lengths behind Classic Giacnroll.
In the Withers, Scotland was bothered shortly after the start, showed no speed for more than five furlongs while saving ground, but came out to the middle of the track on the far turn to race outside Classic Giacnroll. The difference was noticeable as Scotland outfinished his rival by 2 3/4 lengths for third. While neither horse seems in the same league as Samraat or Uncle Sigh, Scotland definitely ran better with clear sailing.

Churchill Downs announced on Monday the field for Pool 2 of the 2014 Kentucky Derby Future Wager, with romping Holy Bull winner Cairo Prince the 8-1 favorite among the 23 individual horses. However, the mutuel field, which is the 24th betting interest and encompasses all other 3-year-olds, again is the overall morning-line favorite at 7-5.
While this is the first Derby future wager pool of 2014, it’s the second involving the 140th Kentucky Derby, with Churchill for the first time launching the future bet in late November. The mutuel field went off as the 4-5 favorite in that pool, with Honor Code the favored individual at 10-1 and the now-retired Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner New Year’s Day at 15-1. Cairo Prince’s odds in Pool 1 were 26-1.
Honor Code remains at 10-1 in Mike Battaglia’s morning line for Pool 2.
Wagering for the bet, which is designed to give handicappers potentially a bigger price than they might get on Derby Day May 3, begins at noon ET Thursday and concludes at 6 p.m. ET Saturday or at post time of Santa Anita’s Robert B. Lewis Stakes, whichever comes first. The future wager offers $2 win betting and exactas, though exactas can be bet for a $1 minimum when using combinations.
More information on the future wager can be found at kentuckyderby.com, including real-time odds once it opens for betting. As with any future wager, there is no refund if a horse included in the bet doesn’t make it to the Derby or Oaks.
Pool 2 features 14 horses who were not individual wagering interests in the November wager, including Derby points-race winners Midnight Hawk (Sham), Samraat (Withers), Tapiture (Kentucky Jockey Club) and Vicar’s in Trouble (Lecomte).

Pletcher nominates 41 horses to the Triple Crown, including 4 horses yet to start and another 7 yet to break their maiden.

For Pletcher, 41 shots at Kentucky Derby roses

By Marty McGee

BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. – A training chart with 41 horses isn’t all that uncommon. Many of the top trainers in North America have at least that many horses to look after. The powerhouse stables have two or three times that number, some even more.
All of which boggles the mind in regard to what Todd Pletcher is doing this winter. Pletcher has 41 3-year-olds nominated to the Triple Crown, an all-time record that once again will make his stable the most-watched on the road to the 140th Kentucky Derby on May 3 at Churchill Downs. (The original list has Pletcher as trainer of a 42nd nominee, Bashart, but that colt is now with Christophe Clement at Payson Park.)

There has yet to be a Pletcher runner to emerge as a favorite for the Kentucky Derby in the way Uncle Mo, Eskendereya, or even Verrazano distinguished themselves in recent years. But with nearly three months until the Derby, and all the major prep races still to be run, there might be a dozen or more Pletcher horses with the potential to be among the core of favorites by Derby Day. Five of his nominees are fillies, and they are more likely to end up in the May 2 Kentucky Oaks, but Pletcher said he wants to “keep our options open.”
“I guess if you asked me to name our top five prospects right now, they’d be Havana, Commissioner, Harpoon, Vinceremos, and Intense Holiday, but that’s only because they’ve all gone out and actually done something so far,” he said. “You’ve got that next tier of horses where they’re only one more good race away from being in the top group, but it’s hard to put them on any kind of list until they go out and do it.”
Four of those colts just below the radar not only have impressive debut victories as the only race on their past-performances but also share another thing in common: they all were sired by Tapit. They are Anchor Down, Constitution, Hartford, and Matterhorn.
“I guess it’s quite a coincidence they’re all by the same sire,” he said. “They’re all at pretty much the same stage right now, where their next race is critical in determining how we proceed. Obviously these next few weeks are very important in our decision-making process.”
Well before dawn on a recent morning at the Palm Meadows training center, where all but a handful of his Triple Crown nominees are training, Pletcher could be found intensely inspecting his horses. This daily routine is factory-like, but the individual attention Pletcher gives each horse is not. Pletcher carefully touched each horse from withers to rump before running his hands over all four legs and then watching the horse jog for its handler.
Later that day, Pletcher took time to go through each of his 41 Triple Crown nominees and comment about each one. Some took just a few seconds, but others, such as Breeders’ Cup Juvenile runner-up Havana, he took a little more time discussing.
“He’ll go next in the Swale,” said Pletcher, referring to the seven-furlong race at Gulfstream Park on March 1. “He just breezed here Saturday and I was pleasantly surprised at the level of fitness he showed. It made me feel good that we’re on schedule with him, maybe even a little ahead.”
Pletcher had a record-tying five Derby starters last year, with third-place Revolutionary being his best finisher. He shares the record for most starters in a Derby with D. Wayne Lukas and Nick Zito. From 36 career Kentucky Derby starters, he has had one Derby winner, Super Saver in 2010.

[h=1]Steve Davidowitz's Robert B. Lewis Stakes analysis[/h]By Steve Davidowitz

Grade 2, $200,000 Robert B. Lewis Stakes, 1 1/16 miles, Santa Anita, Feb. 8
(10 Kentucky Derby eligibility points to the winner, 4 for second, 2 for third, 1 for fourth)

This was an important mid-winter test for highly regarded, lightly raced prospects for the Santa Anita Derby on April 5 and possibly the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs May 3.
Candy Boy, who had finished second to 2-year-old champion Shared Belief in the 2013 CashCall Futurity Dec. 14, made an impressive 3-year-old debut in this race.
The strongly built son of Candy Ride, expertly trained by John Sadler and confidently ridden by Hall of Famer Gary Stevens, scored a deceptively narrow half-length victory over a pair of highly rated Bob Baffert trainees, Chitu and Midnight Hawk.

Candy Boy may have enjoyed a perfect trip en route to a 1:41.83 clocking and a 96 Beyer Speed Figure, but there was more to the performance than a good speed figure.
For one thing, Candy Boy settled comfortably into a good position behind the speed without urging. For another, he remained relaxed until Stevens angled him out for his winning rally in the stretch to defeat a pair of promising colts who were running well. Finally, Candy Boy completed his performance with a strong sixteenth-mile burst of speed to take the measure of Chitu. Candy Boy then continued past the wire with a visually impressive gallop-out, as if longer distances should be within his scope.
Stevens was so impressed he called Candy Boy his “number one draft choice,” right now for the Kentucky Derby. “He didn’t even take a deep breath after the race,” Stevens added. “He’s a super talent.”
Diamond Bachelor set a brisk early pace as Chitu and El Nino Terrible were in close attendance around the first turn while a slightly overanxious Midnight Hawk and a relaxed Candy Boy were right behind them. On the backstretch, Midnight Hawk edged closer from fifth into third while widest as El Nino Terrible began an early retreat.
Chitu, making his first try around two turns, continued to apply pressure to Diamond Bachelor through a 46.80 half-mile while the undefeated Midnight Hawk pushed them both from the outside. Candy Boy continued under wraps, rating kindly in fourth all the way through the final turn.
Into the stretch, Chitu and Midnight Hawk began to edge away from Diamond Bachelor, with Chito emerging with a short lead. But neither colt could hold off Candy Boy after he was angled out to launch his winning move under Stevens’s left-handed whipping.

Because Chitu and Midnight Hawk were only making their third starts, they should benefit from their efforts. Yet, the jury is still out whether either wants a classic distance. Fourth-place finisher, Diamond Bachelor - very good on grass last year – will be one to watch when trainer Patrick Biancone puts him back on turf. The same should be true for David Hofmans’s Home Run Kitten, who made a brief move on the far turn in his first try on dirt after a pair of good turf sprints.
Next week:
Grade 3, $200,000 El Camino Real Derby, 1 1/8 miles Golden Gate Fields, Feb. 15
Grade 3, $300,000 Southwest Stakes, 1 1/16 miles, Oaklawn Park, Feb. 17

Candy Boy was impressive on Saturday and his versatility with both dirt and poly should be a plus if he makes the gate for the Derby. Churchill has a reputation for being a decent track for horses with poly ability.

Also was impressed with the way Cairo Prince dispatched of a pretty good field in the Holy Bull.

[h=2]Kentucky Derby Trail: Where They're Going Next[/h]2/11/2014
11:01 am

By Dick Downey
@DowneyProfile

Connections of many horses have firmed up plans since last week, and other events have transpired, so let's see where they're going next on the Road to the Kentucky Derby. This survey covers over 90 horses.

Bond Holder continues to work steadily for Doug O'Neill and remains pointed to the Risen Star Stakes on Feb. 22. We note that a list released today shows he's been nominated to the UAE Derby, scheduled for March 29. O'Neill leads all U. S.-based trainers with six nominations from a total of 129.

Cairo Prince will skip the Fountain of Youth and be trained up to the Florida Derby on March 29 by Kiaran McLaughlin. However, he's also nominated to the UAE Derby.

Candy Boy will, according to a comment made by John Sadler on Sunday, skip the San Felipe and wait for the Santa Anita Derby. But wait, he's another leading Derby Trail contender that's been nominated to the UAE Derby.

Commissioner, trained by Todd Pletcher, remains on track for the Fountain of Youth following breezes at Palm Meadows on Jan. 26, Feb. 2 and Feb. 9.

Gold Hawk, who disappointed in the Lecomte states, worked on a sloppy track afterward, just like he did beforehand. Additional workouts came on Feb. 3 and Feb. 10, and he remains on track for the Risen Star on Feb. 22 for Steve Asmussen. Corey Nakatani is coming in to ride, the third jockey in three races for Gold Hawk.

Havana, who finally returned to the worktab on Feb. 1, remains pointed to the Swale Stakes on March 1. Todd Pletcher said after that breeze Havana was further along than he thought. Since then, Havana has breezed twice more, on Feb. 6 and Feb. 11, so that's three works in 11 days.

Honor Code still hasn't put in a published workout since going three furlongs on Jan. 18 at Payson Park. On Jan. 30, Shug McGaughey moved Honor Code from Payson Park to his barn at Gulfstream Park so he could keep a closer eye on him.

Midnight Hawk, third in the Robert B Lewis Stakes for Bob Baffert, could go next in the San Felipe, but it's too early to tell. Baffert, who is apparently sitting out the Southwest Stakes, said he'd like to send something to the Rebel Stakes on March 15.

Samraat, winner of the Withers Stakes by a length over Uncle Sigh, will either wait for the Florida Derby or Louisiana Derby or Wood Memorial -- or, in the words of Rick Violette, if he's tearing down his stall could go in the Gotham on March 1.

We're still awaiting a workout by Shared Belief, and right now it looks like there is no way to predict when it will happen. The last one was on Jan. 3.There's no way to say we'll see the Jerry Hollendorfer trainee in the San Felipe on March 8. He is among the nominees to the UAE Derby.

The Southwest Stakes is only six days away as this piece is posted, and the track at Oaklawn Park was shut down due to winter weather for four straight days on Feb. 6-9. There were only three workouts at the track on Feb. 10.Strong Mandate breezed a bullet on a sloppy track Feb. 2 for Wayne Lukas. Everything at the track is in the same boat. Horses were training on the track the date of this post, Feb. 11. Worktab not yet posted, though.

Tapiture is also looking at the Southwest Stakes for Asmussen and has been preparing at Fair Grounds, where the weather's been better than at Oaklawn. We double-checked the Fair Grounds worktab, and there's nothing there for Tapiture since Feb. 3. Maybe something will happen soon, but the Southwest is less than a week away.

The featured horse on Shug McGaughey's marquee remains Top Billing, and he remains on course for the Fountain of Youth after breezing on Feb. 8.

Vicar's in Trouble, energetic winner of the Lecomte, is staying put and pointing to the Risen Star for Mike Maker. Since that win, he's worked at Fair Grounds on Feb. 2 and Feb. 9 for Mike Maker.

Other Contenders -- All of them listed on our Worth Watching or Just In Case Pages

Albano: Second in the Lecomte, next is the Risen Star on Feb. 22 for Larry Jones. Sharp recent workout.

Almost Famous: Presumably the Fountain of Youth on Feb. 22 for Pat Byrne after running fourth in the Holy Bull.

Baratti: Gotham Stakes on March 1 for Kiaran McLaughlin's maiden winner.

Bayern: Got a little sick but then worked and has an allowance race on Feb. 13.

Bobby's Kitten: Since his third in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf, he's worked five times, most recently on Feb. 10.

Bourbonize: Allowance winner to the Southwest Stakes on Feb. 17.

California Chrome: Cal Cup Derby winner to the San Felipe Stakes on March 8.

Can'thelpbelieving: Working on turf at Palm Meadows and nominated to the UAE Derby. Graham Motion certainly knows the ropes over there. Maybe the Palm Beach on March 1 is next.

Cherubim: San Vicente Stakes on Feb. 16.

Chitu: He was somewhat of a surprise entry in the Robert B. Lewis and ran a credible second. Like Midnight Hawk, it's too early to know what's next.

Coastline: Southwest Stakes after a disappointing third in the Smarty Jones.

Coltimus Prime: A close second in the Display Stakes last year, he's only recently returned to the worktab at Palm Beach Downs.

Commanding Curve: Risen Star on Feb. 22.

Conquest Titan: Trainer Casse has considered everything and decided to stay at home for the Fountain of Youth on Feb. 22.

Constitution: Trainer Pletcher went on record that an allowance race is probably the next logical spot.

Cool Samurai: Stable may be regrouping after poor effort in the Robert B. Lewis.

Cousin Stephen: Don't yet know if he'll return in the Tampa Bay Derby on March 8 after running third in the Sam F. Davis.

Craftsman: El Camino Real Derby on Feb. 15.

Deceived: Possible for the Gotham Stakes on March 1.

Dunkin Bend: Southwest Stakes on Feb. 17.

East Hall: Fountain of Youth on Feb. 22 if all goes well.

Edison: Will be fun to follow what this $950,000 turf maiden winner does next.

Enterprising: Second in the California Derby, he'll return to Golden Gate for the El Camino Real Derby on Feb. 15.

Exit Stage Left: First in the California Derby, he's sidelined with an injury for a duration not yet publicly disclosed.

Financial Mogul: Gotham Stakes on March 1.

Flat Gone: Risen Star Stakes on Feb. 22.

General a Rod: Fountain of Youth Stakes is next for the Gulfstream Park Derby winner.

Global View: Note that the Nov. 30 Generous Stakes winner is working at Tampa for his 2014 debut.

Harpoon: Too early to know what's next for the closing runner-up of the Sam F. Davis.

Hartford: Published work on Jan. 28, then there was a gap, then he returned to the tab on Feb. 11.

Hoppertunity: Impressive maiden winner at Santa Anita on Jan 30 worked on Feb. 10; fantasy players like him; next outing not known here.

Hy Kodiak Warrior: Third to Commissioner in that Jan. 3 allowance, he's not appeared on the worktab since Jan. 17.

I’ll Wrap It Up: El Camino Real Derby on Feb. 15.

In Trouble: Hasn't raced since winning the Futurity on Sept. 29, but he's been working at Palm Meadows since Jan. 11; his most recent breeze was Feb. 3.

Infosec: El Camino Real Derby on Feb. 15.

Indianapolis: San Pedro winner goes next in the San Vicente on Feb. 16.

Intense Holiday: Third in the Holy Bull, his next outing could be either the Fountain of Youth Stakes or Risen Star Stakes, both on Feb. 22. Nice breeze on Feb. 9.

Kobe's Back: San Vicente Stakes on Feb. 16.

Kristo: Last seen second in the Sham, skipped the Lewis, active on the worktab. San Felipe? Nominated to the UAE Derby.

Louies Flower: Springboard Mile winner to the Southwest Stakes for his 2014 debut.

Matador: A close fourth in the Davis, presumably the Tampa Bay Derby is next.

Matterhorn: Active on the worktab at Palm Meadows, this maiden winner is one of several Plether must sort out.

Medal Count: Fountain of Youth Stakes on Feb. 22.

Mexikoma: Recent comment by trainer Mettee: He hopes an allowance race near the end of February will fill.

Mosler: Bill Mott maiden winner is active on the Payson Park worktab; allowance race on Fountain of Youth day?

Mr Speaker: Back to the grass in the Palm Beach Stakes at Gulfstream Park on March 1 after a disappointing effort on dirt in the Holy Bull.

No Nay Never: Word has been it's the Swale Stakes on March 1 for the winner of the 2013 Norfolk at Royal Ascot and Prix Morny at Deauville

Noble Moon: He is now out of consideration for the March 1 Gotham Stakes; stable now shooting for the Wood Memorial.

Orange Grove: Sadly, he's off the Derby Trail with an injury.

Paganol: Southwest Stakes on Feb. 17.

Papa Turf: San Vicente Stakes on Feb. 16.

Poker Player: Talented turf runner is active on the main track worktab at Fair Grounds.

Quick Indian: The Risen Star Stakes ws mentioned as logical by his trainer following an allowance win on Jan. 24.

Red N Black Attack: One mile starter/optional claimer at Santa Anita on Feb. 13.

Ride On Curlin: Southwest Stakes on Feb. 17.

Rise Up: The Risen Star is the 2014 debut destination for the Delta Jackpot winner.

Roger Rocket: January debut maiden winner active on the Santa Anita worktab.

Sassicaia: Maiden special weight stretching out from 6 1/2-furlong debut.

Schoolofhardrocks: Don't know, but he's working up a storm at Santa Anita.

Scotland: A distant third in the Withers, is the Gotham Stakes on March 1 next, or will connections be less amitious with him?

Smack Smack: Southwest Stakes on Feb. 17.

Solitary Ranger: There was a gap after a Jan. 18 workout; he returned to the tab on Feb. 6.

Son of a Preacher: Presumbly the Southwest Stakes is next after a fourth in the Smarty Jones.

Storming Inti: Palm Beach Stakes-to-Keeneland route to the Derby?

Surfing U S A: Yet another one Pletcher must sort out has returned to the worktab after losing to Top Billing on Jan. 25.

Tamarando: El Camino Real Derby was named after stablemate Exit Stage Left was injured, knocking him out of the race.

Tanzanite Cat: Smarty Jones winner to the Southwest Stakes.

Tap It Rich: One mile allowance at Santa Anita on Feb. 13.

Tonalist: Maybe an allowance race on Fountain of Youth day.

Uncle Sigh: Withers runner-up will go to the Gotham next.

Undertaker: Presumably the Gotham Stakes on March 1.

Vinceremos: One would think the Sam F. Davis winner will proceed to the Tampa Bay Derby if all goes well.

Walt: Smarty Jones second finisher to the Southwest Stakes.

We Miss Artie: Will it be the Palm Beach on March 1, then on to Polytrack in Kentucky? Or to the UAE Derby?

Wildcat Red: Fountain of Youth Stakes next for the Hutcheson winner.

Three horses are considered possible for the El Camino Real Derby, and they're all nominated to the Triple Crown: Grazen’s Hope, Life Is A Joy and Pearl Spectre. Three other runners considered probable for that race weren't early-nominated to the Triple Crown: Dance with Fate, Neverwherecauseway and Puppy Manners.

This survey is not intended to cover all 3-year-olds on the Road to the Kentucky Derby..

Also was impressed with the way Cairo Prince dispatched of a pretty good field in the Holy Bull.

Cairo Prince has been impressive, but he did get a perfect trip in the Holy Bull, which of course he had to take advantage of. Also, not a fan of going 2 months between races when healthy as prep for the Derby, understanding you want your horse as fresh as possible but think they need some seasoning too.

Now we start to get more serious, really wide open this year and think the next couple of months are going to be real fun and interesting and will probably present itself to make some money in these preps as no clear cut favorite anywhere should see some horses hit at decent prices.

Oaklawn Park: Tapiture much the best in Southwest

By Mary Rampellini

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. - Now it’s a rivalry.
Tapiture, who finished second to Strong Mandate in a maiden special weight race last August at Saratoga, reversed that order of finish on Monday at Oaklawn Park, when he strode to a 4 1/4-length win over the even-money favorite in the Grade 3, $300,000 Southwest Stakes.
It was the second time the pair had met, and both are now on course for a third showdown, in the Grade 2, $600,000 Rebel on March 15.

The Southwest was the first major race in Oaklawn’s series for 3-year-olds, and it was worth 17 Kentucky Derby preference points to the first four finishers, with Tapiture earning 10; Strong Mandate, 4; Ride on Curlin, 2; and Coastline, 1.
Tapiture ($13) was always prominent under Ricardo Santana Jr., prompting Tanzanite Cat, then Ride on Curlin, through respective fractions of 23.45 seconds for the opening quarter and 47.92 for the half-mile. Tapiture poked a head in front through six furlongs in 1:13.06, and then began to increase his advantage while covering 1 1/16 miles on a fast track in 1:44.95.
The Southwest was Tapiture’s first start since winning the Grade 2 Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes at Churchill Downs on Nov. 30.
“He was working really nice,” Santana said. “I was so excited for this race. The horse is a really nice horse, been training really good.”
Steve Asmussen, who trains Tapiture for Winchell Thoroughbreds, said depending on the weather in Arkansas, the horse would remain with his local division to prepare for the Rebel. He said he was well-pleased with effort from Tapiture, but noted the horse’s eagerness Monday.
“I wish he would have settled a little better,” Asmussen said. “He never really dropped the bridle. He never really relaxed a lot. Having said that, we were extremely happy with the outcome; very pleased with the ability that he has. But I still think he’s going to have to turn off a little bit to go further.”
Strong Mandate had a less than ideal trip in what was his first start since finishing third in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile.
“He broke a little slow,” said Joel Rosario, who was aboard for trainer D. Wayne Lukas. “In the first turn want to get in position, but I can’t. I have to hold him a little bit, a couple of horses box him around, in and out, and in out. I had to grab him. He’s the kind of horse you have to let him run free. He still ran good.”
Lukas said the horse would be pointed for the Rebel.
Tapiture earned $180,000 for his win in the Southwest, his second career victory from five starts. He has now earned $320,838. Tapiture is a May foal by Tapit and was bred in Kentucky by Winchell Thoroughbreds.
Strong Mandate finished six lengths clear of third-place finisher Ride on Curlin. The remaining order of finish was Coastline in fourth, Tanzanite Cat, Bourbonize, Walt, Fire Starter, Son of Dixie, Paganol, Kendall’s Boy, and Louies Flower.
Oaklawn handled $5.4 million on its 10-race card from all-sources on Monday, with the ontrack crowd of 25,622 betting $1.4 million of that amount.

[h=1]Fair Grounds: Risen Star attracts 16 horses; Vicar's in Trouble outside[/h]By Marcus Hersh

Kentucky Derby Fever long has infected horsepeople with talented 3-year-olds, and now the malady has mutated, spinning off a similar affliction: Kentucky Derby Qualifying Points Fever.
A massive total of 16 horses passed the entry box Monday for Saturday’s Grade 2, $400,000 Risen Star Stakes, which awards Derby qualifying points to its first four finishers on a 50-20-10-5 basis. The main body of the field is 14-strong, with two longshots – the race’s lowest earners – on the also-eligible list.

The crush of entrants did no favors for the Risen Star’s potential favorite, Vicar’s in Trouble, who easily won the Lecomte Stakes in his most recent start to run his career record to 2 for 2, but landed post 14 for the Risen Star. With a moderately short run to the first turn in the 1 1/16-mile race, one would assume the horse stuck in post 14 would be at a disadvantage, but assume is as far as one can go: The last 10 Fair Grounds race meets haven’t included a single 14-horse field. Only two such races have gone with 13 starters during the last 10 meetings, and only 15 with as many as 12 starters.
Ive Struck a Nerve, a mega-longshot, won the 2013 Risen Star, and perhaps owing to his unlikely success, this year’s field is longer on hope than actual accomplishment. Only three horses – Vicar’s in Trouble, Bond Holder, and Rise Up, have won graded stakes races. Seven entrants are mere maiden winners, and Vigorish still is a maiden.
Besides Vicar’s in Trouble, who will have leading rider Rosie Napravnik in the irons, the other likely favorites include: Intense Holiday, (post 9, Mike Smith), third last out in the Grade 3 Holy Bull Stakes and a close fourth last fall in the Grade 2 Remsen Stakes; Bond Holder (post 5, Mario Gutierrez), who ships from California and won the Grade 1 FrontRunner Stakes last fall at Santa Anita; and Delta Downs Jackpot Stakes winner Rise Up (post 2, Gerard Melancon).
The rest of the field, from inside out is Albano, Flat Gone, Gold Hawk, Interchange, Hoppertunity, Son of a Preacher, Quick Indian, Xtra Luck, and Commanding Curve.
The Risen Star, one of five stakes Saturday, goes as race 11 on a 12-race program. First post is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. Central, with the Risen Star set for 5:25. The long-range forecast calls for a chance of showers and thunderstorms Saturday.
Rachel Alexandra gets seven
Ria Antonia, placed first through the disqualification of She’s a Tiger in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies, heads a field of seven entered in the Grade 3, $200,000 Rachel Alexandra Stakes.
Ria Antonia, who will be ridden for the first time by Joe Talamo, drew post 6 for the first start of her 3-year-old campaign. The filly’s connections had contemplated a start in the Risen Star before deciding on the Rachel Alexandra.
Ria Antonia’s primary foes are Got Lucky (post 5, Mike Smith), in from Florida for trainer Todd Pletcher, and Streaming (post 2, Martin Garcia) who ships from California for trainer Bob Baffert. Got Lucky finished a close second in the Grade 2 Demoiselle last fall. Streaming won the Grade 1 Hollywood Starlet Stakes but finished second as the even-money favorite in the Grade 1 Las Virgenes on Feb. 1 at Santa Anita. Hill ‘n’ Dale Stable is an owner of both Streaming and Got Lucky, but they race as separate wagering interests.
Late last week, trainer Larry Jones said he thought he had two horses for the Rachel Alexandra, but Divine Beauty was taken out of consideration Friday, while an unspecified minor issue was detected in Cassatt over the weekend, and neither one was entered in the Rachel Alexandra.
Nine apiece in two stakes
Nine older horses, headed by Prayer for Relief and Fordubai, were entered in the Grade 3 Mineshaft Handicap, a dirt-route race. Nine also were entered in the Grade 3 Fair Grounds Handicap, which is carded for turf, but two of those horses, Ground Transport and Mister Marti Gras, probably would only run if the race were moved to dirt, and both are cross-entered in the Mineshaft. Daddy Nose Best, winner of two turf stakes at the Fair Grounds meet, is the starting highweight entered in the Fair Grounds Handicap.

[h=1]Gulfstream Park: Top Billing draws post 12 for Fountain of Youth; Commissioner favored[/h]By Mike Welsch

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – A year ago, trainer Shug McGaughey won the $400,000 Fountain of Youth Stakes from the rail with Orb. On Saturday, the Hall of Fame horseman will defend that title from the other end of the post-position spectrum after his Top Billing drew post 12 in a bulky field of 13 3-year-olds entered Monday for the Grade 2 Fountain of Youth.
Top Billing, who has won two of his three starts, including an entry-level allowance race in impressive fashion here last month, was originally to have been the morning-line favorite for the Fountain of Youth, according to track oddsmaker Ron Nicoletti. But after drawing post 12, Top Billing will be the second choice in the program at 7-2 behind Commissioner at 3-1.
Commissioner, like Orb last year, breaks from post 1 on Saturday. Joel Rosario will again ride Top Billing, while John Velazquez has the mount on Commissioner.
The rest of the Fountain of Youth field, in post-position order: We Miss Artie (Joe Bravo), Medal Count (Joe Rocco Jr.), Wildcat Red (Luis Saez), General a Rod (Javier Castellano), Casiguapo (Jose Lezcano), C. Zee (Edgard Zayas), Almost Famous (Calvin Borel), Best Plan Yet (Paco Lopez), Our Caravan (Corey Lanerie), Hesinfront (Abdiel Jaen), and East Hall (Juan Leyva).
The Fountain of Youth offers 50 Kentucky Derby qualifying points to the winner under the system used by Churchill Downs to determine the field for the May 3 race should more than the maximum of 20 horses enter. The Fountain of Youth also offers 20 points to the runner-up, 10 for third place, and 5 for fourth.
McGaughey naturally was disappointed that Top Billing drew outside but said it won’t dissuade him from running in the Fountain of Youth.
“It’s not like he’s going to be on the lead,” McGaughey said. “Joel’s just going to have to get him over a bit going to the first turn. He had him a little wide to keep him out of the dirt when he won his last race. We overcame post 1 to win this race last year with Orb. Now, we’ll have to overcome post 12 to do it again this time.”
Top Billing breezed an easy half-mile in 50.40 seconds at Payson Park on Monday.
“I put him in company to sort of get him in the game, and I thought he went fine,” McGaughey said. “He just went an easy half-mile, out five-eighths. I didn’t want to overcook him.”

Trainer Todd Pletcher was relieved to have drawn better than Top Billing with both Commissioner and We Miss Artie on Monday.
“When the field got up to 13, you naturally fear drawing way outside,” Pletcher said. “But as I’ve said before, you can get good trips and bad trips from any post. Hopefully, we’ll be able to secure good position for both horses from their inside posts.”
Pletcher said he decided to give We Miss Artie, a Grade 1 winner on Polytrack at 2 and the runner-up in the Kitten’s Joy Stakes on turf in his 3-year-old debut, one more chance to prove his mettle on dirt.
“The horse has been training too well on dirt since the Kitten’s Joy not to give him another opportunity,” Pletcher said. “He impressed us again Sunday morning, and now is the time to see where we are with him. If he runs well, we’ll have a lot of dirt options.”
General a Rod, idle since capturing the Gulfstream Park Derby on New Year’s Day, is well drawn in post 5 for the Fountain of Youth. General a Rod turned in another in a series of good works since the Gulfstream Park Derby when going five furlongs in 1:00 here Sunday.
“We decided to skip the Holy Bull because I thought it would be asking too much of him to run in all these big races,” trainer Mike Maker said. “But he’s doing well, and Saturday will certainly be the acid test for him, to see if he fits with these types of horses.”

An honest pace is expected in the Fountain of Youth, with Wildcat Red, winner of the seven-furlong Hutcheson Stakes, and Almost Famous, who ran well after contesting an honest pace in the Holy Bull, in the lineup.
◗ A field of eight 3-year-old fillies also was drawn Monday for Saturday’s Grade 2 Davona Dale. The lineup is topped by Pletcher’s pair of Onlyforyou and Stopchargingmaria. They will take on a group that includes Abou, Luna Santa, Aurelia’s Belle, House Rules, and Penwith.

I'm putting more emphasis on final fractions this year with the 3YOs, my too best finishers in the Southwest were Tapiture and Ride on Curlin and they went 1-3 with the favorite between them. Will adjust down the road if it doesn't work out.

Walking through the Fountain of Youth field:

EARLY HORSES

8 - Almost Famous -
4th in the Holy Bull at 12-1, beaten 7 lengths by Cairo Prince and Conquest Titan after attending the pace. Best effort to date was a N1X Allowance at Churchill Downs, finished the last 1/4 a bit slow at 26 flat, though off a solid early pace. Could be dangerous against a full yet undistinguished field. Might be stuck dueling Wildcat Red though.

4 - Wildcat Red - Won the Hutcheson at 7 furlongs as the favorite, now stretches to 2 turns for the first time. Castellano jumps off to ride General a Rod, which is a red flag. Nearest thing to a route race was his 2nd in the 1 mile Gulfstream Derby in January, where he finished last 1/4 in 25&3. Figures to be well bet and probably an underlay.

PACE PRESSERS

5 - General a Rod - Outdueled Wildcat Red in the Gulfstream Derby, also trying 2 turns for the first time. Castellano & Maker have been hitting at 50%(!) together the last two months. Can rate if needed, so his versatility is a plus. Freshening should put him in position to fire his best, which is good enough to contend here.

13 - East Hall
- Ten races veteran has not had a meaningful break since starting his career last June. Finished 3rd in the Gulfstream Derby, flattening out in the stretch. Followed that with a close 3rd at 8.5 furlongs in the OBS Championship. Also has a loss to Best Plan Yet on his resume from 2013. Hard to see this one leaping forward enough to win.

6 - Casigaupo - Stretches back out in his 2nd run in 2014, after needing a 6 furlong mid-pack effort a few weeks ago. Finished 2nd in the Delta Jackpot last year to Rise Up, stumbling home in 27&2. Was a distant 2nd to Strong Mandate in the Hopeful, and 4th behind Ride on Curlin in the Champagne, the 2nd & 3rd finishers in the Southwest last weekend. Will have a tougher time in this better field.

11 - Hesinfront - Making his 2nd start on dirt after a ho-hum 4th last time out behind Top Billing in an N1X Allowance. Was also a distant 7th in the G3 Dania Beach, so the class just isn't there. Would need to leap forward a huge amount here to have a shot. No thanks.

9 - Best Plan Yet - Making his 3rd start of the year, finished an unthreatening 5th in the Holy Bull, before that was non-competitive in the Gulfstream Derby. His dirty form this year hides 3 wins in 2013, including one restricted and one overnight stake at Calder, both routing over a mile. Closed the final 1/4 of the Holy Bull at 25&2 off a ground saving trip, so he might be ready to get back to his 2013 form here. Was 92-1 in the Holy Bull, if you get half that here he's worth a small shot.

3 - Medal Count - Finished 11th in the BC Juvenile last year, then opened 2014 with a turf win at 7.5 furlong in an N1X allowance. Came to fame is flashing a nice middle move in the G3 Bourbon last year when finishing 5th. Speed numbers don't match up with a what it takes to win here. Pass.

7 - C Zee - Stretching out for the first time after his back to back sprint 2nds in the Hutcheson and Spectacular Bid stakes. If he can carry his speed around two turns he could be dangerous. Was bet but not well bet in the two stakes, going off at 6-1 both times. Getting 12-1 or so on this one here wouldn't be the worst thing.

OFF THE PACE

2 - We Miss Artie - Moving from turf back to dirt after winning the Kittens Joy in January. Was a competitive 7th in the BC Juvenile last year but stumbled home like everyone else, and won the Breeders Cup Futurity at Keeneland last October. Probably better on turf but the trainer's name is Pletcher and the owner's name is Ramsey so there has to be some respect given. I'll probably make him beat me though.

10 - Our Caravan - Most lightly raced in the group, making only his 3rd start. Jumped from his maiden win right to the G2 Holy Bull, where he lost badly. Might do a little better today with the experience but really would need a huge move forward to be competitive. Ran the final 1/4 in 26&2, not overly impressive.

CLOSERS

1 - Commissioner - Was only 2 lengths off the pace when beating Top Billing at 9 furlong in January, will be interested to see where Johnny V puts him here. Closed in a fine 24&1, so the distance will be no problem. 1 for 1 at Gulfstream, so the track shouldn't be an issue. If he's kept out of trouble he's one of the big contenders here.

12 - Top Billing - Another big contender for Shug after training last year's Derby champ. Comes from a little further back than Commissioner, so he'll need to work out a trip. Rosario is 20% with closer types so he'll have a good chance to succeed. Will be very well bet and will be looming late if the track's speed bias is tempered.

Top choice - Commissioner
Next best - General a Rod
Exotics - Top Billing, Best Plan Yet

Looks like Bond Holder is out at the Risen Star, which would allow Emmett Park to draw in. Too bad because it looks like the race sets up for a closer type like him.

EARLY HORSES

4 - Vigorish -
Six races into his career and still a maiden for D Wayne Lukas. Tried two turns the last time and finished a close 2nd after a long duel with Red River Rising, but the field in general was weak and I doubt he got enough out of it to be in the hunt here. Figures to help the late runners by pushing the pace.

12 - Xtra Luck - Local horse who still qualifies for N1X races, his speed figures are 20+ lengths behind what's needed to win this one. Not even sure he'll be able to stay with the front runners early.

14 - Vicar's in Trouble - Big winner of the LeComte came home in a decent 25&1 taking them nearly wire to wire, although the pace was slightly soft. Extra 40 yards shouldn't be a problem, although the far outside post will add to that trip. Probably the one to beat, but can be beaten.

PACE PRESSERS

1 - Albano - Chased the Vicar all the way around in the LeComte, does not appear to have anything new going on that will make up the six lengths lost other than the ground-saving rail position. Pass on winning, maybe an exotics chance.

2 - Rise Up -
Delta Jackpot winner makes his first start in 2014. Has excelled on smaller tracks in his career but struggled in his one race on the big track at Churchill, finishing 6th in the Iroquois behind Cleburne, Tapiture and others in what is turning out to be a pretty good race. Had a really sharp work at FG on the 15th and his speed numbers look good against the group. Dangerous contender.

7 - Interchange - Stakes winner last year in his second try, may have needed the race last month where he finished 5th in an allowance against entrants Xtra Luck and Quick Indian. Finished that stakes race last year in 25&2 in a wire to wire win, so there's some talent there. Should see a decent price on him based on last race. Worth a second look.

8 - Hoppertunity - Baffert & Garcia bring in this maiden winner, so you know he'll be well bet. I his 1 turn maiden win at a mile he closed in 25&1, so he could be interesting with a little step forward here. Probably an underlay though, unless the Vicar get's all the money.

10 - Son of a Preacher -
Finished an even fourth in the Smarty Jones. After 4 races he still qualifies for N1X. Nothing really jumps off the page with this one. Seems like a mid-pack horse.

13 - Commanding Curve - Maiden winner last November in his most recent, fourth try, closed with a flourish in 24&4. Coming off the freshening, had a superb 5 furlong work at FG on the 9th (1st/80). Don't sleep on this one! Should get a good price on him.

OFF THE PACE

6 - Gold Hawk - Finished 3rd in LeComte after being a pest at the gate. Closed in 25&3 despite the pedestrian pace. Like Albano I don't see anything new here that will make up the distance from the last one.

15 - Emmitt Park - Should draw in with Bond Holder's defection. 2 for 2 with both wins coming on the poly at Turfway. Has been working well at the Fairgrounds so he should be OK in this race. Saved ground in both wins, not afraid to run inside. Won't get that opportunity today with the outermost post. Final quarter of 25&3 against a mediocre pace in his maiden is not impressive, neither was 26&4 against a good pace in his second win. Pass.

9 - Intense Holiday - Todd Pletcher draws Mike Smith to ride this one, which raises eyebrows. Has danced in all the big east coast races (5th in Champagne, 4th in Nashua, 4th in Remsen, 3rd in Holy Bull and is showing steady improvement. Catches a little weaker field today IMO. Finished 25&4 in the Holy Bull (good pace), and was closing in the Remsen against heavyweights Honor Code and Cairo Prince at 9 furlongs. Definite contender if Smith can work out a trip.

CLOSERS

11 - Quick Indian - Won his most recent on this track in an N1X, although the figures for overall time and final quarter were unimpressive. Would really need to step up big here, and with a dozen to pass it will be a very tall order. Outside post is no help either. Pass.

3 - Flat Gone - Bumped along in a combination of maiden and stakes efforts before finally getting his first win in try #7, catching a fast pace suited well for his deep closer style. The final 1/4 in the win was 27&1, yikes. No thank you.

Top Choice - Rise Up
Next Best - Intense Holiday, Commanding Curve, Vicar's in Trouble
Exotics - Hoppertunity, Interchange

Fountain of Youth:

#1 Commissioner: Has 2 9F wins under his belt, but not an exceptionally fast horse, but did get up in time chasing moderate fractions in last and got the better of the outside horse her Top Billing, I don't think the 1/2F cutback does him any favors and will have to hope Johnny V can steer him through some traffic, will use underneath but will be against for the top prize.

#2 We Miss Artie: Always have to respect Ramsey and Pletcher, out of Kitten's Joy, breeding would suggest a prefrence to turf but was respectable in BC Juvenile in November and works on the dirt up in Boynton are pretty good. Should get a nice trip sitting off the early leaders and in a position to get the jump on Commissioner and Top Billing, I think this one is live here and will be using.

#3 Medal Count: Won last on turf and hasn't shown much going longer than a mile, will try to close into what should be fair fractions but if race does set up for closer Commissioner and Top Billing are much better.

#4 Wildcat Red: Showed an ability to rate in winning the G3 Hutchenson in last. Castellano switches over to General a Rod, which could be telling, first time going 2 turns, and not sure if he wants to be going more than a mile, wouldn't be surprised to see him hold on for a minor share here.

#5 General a Rod: Maker is as hot a trainer there is right now and when teaming up with Castellano they are hitting 37% at the meet. Has shown some versatility breaking the maiden at first asking coming from off the pace and then battling for the early lead and holding on in last going a flat mile. Nice steady stream of 5F AM works, and on paper looks like he could work out a nice trip, contender.

#6: Casiguapo: Scratched

#7 C. Zee: Another who has yet to go 2 turns, ran a decent 2nd in the Hutcheson but Wildcat Red was pulling away from him there, should be a pace factor but not much else.

#8 Almost Famous: Should be out front, but probably won't be there by himself which he would prefer. Can make an argument he needed the last and should improve off of that effort. Does have a win at the distance but this is a much tougher field and will be pressured the entire way, holding on for a share wouldn't shock here but would need to run a huge one to get to the wire first.

#9 Best Plan Yet: Ran really well in Calder last summer/fall mainly against state breds, has tried the stakes company at Gulfstream since a layoff and has shown to probably be a little below this level class wise.

#10 Our Caravan: Lightly races horse had a nice maiden win before tackling the big boys in the Holy Bull where he looked outmatched and don't see much difference here.

#11 Hesinfront: Tried dirt for the first time last outing and didn't disgrace himself, but looked a little outclassed in G3 Dania Beach on the turf, probably a notch below the top few in here, but should get a nice trip and might be able to fight for a piece if the race falls apart.

#12 Top Billing: Very similar pattern to his campaign as we saw last year with Orb, as Shug trains and Rosario rides here as well. Late running style should help counter the awful post draw and Rosario will probably just drop back and try to get inside for the short run into the first turn and then make one late move, the problem is although the fractions figure to be honest they won't be blistering and he will have others moving late as well ahead of him. Will be the probable favorite (Orb was 12-1 ML last year), in a wide open field on a track that although he has run well on isn't made for his style, have to respect and include but I'm think he comes up a little short here.

Picks: Think we will see a few of the sprinter types battle early and set some decent but not crazy pace setting up the mid pack stalkers best, in this case #5 General a Rod and #2 We Miss Artie, expect #1 Commissioner and #12 Top Billing to be moving late and battling a tiring #4 Wildcat Red and #8 Almost Famous for the bottom pieces of the exotics.

5,2/1,4,8,12

Gulfstream Race 6: Intriguing race for some 3 year olds with some high hopes moving forward from this race. #9 Tonalist is off a nice maiden win and is looking sharp. #8 Wicked Strong ran a dud last out in the Holy Bull, but that was off a long layoff following a nice effort in the Remsen, and came out of that with a couple of impressive works and expect big improvement off the last, Jerkens 35% 2nd off a layoff. 2 Pletcher first time winners are taking on winners for the first time and #6 Constitution is a little more and quicker and is the preference over #3 Constitution, making first start since November. #10 Mexicoma was starting to creat buzz going into BC Juvenile off a 14 length maiden win at Delaware, making the comeback here and will prefer to see a race first.

EXB 8,9
Tri 8,9/3,6,8,9/3,6,8,9

Constitution took them wire to wire and was never threatened, be safe to assume his next start will be a in a prep, probably the Florida Derby. Tonalist ran a decent second and Mexicoma moved late to grab third after sitting 12 back in the backstretch, should move forward off this.

Normandy Invasion made his first start since the Kentucky Derby and set a new track record for 1 mile. He is an interesting addition to the older handicap division.

Gulfstream seems to be catering very much to speed today. Should help General a Rod quite a bit at the expense of the two favorites.

Yeah, price is right on the 1 and 5 right now. Someone came in huge early on Top Billing.

Cool, now we know we can expect a pace meltdown in the Derby. 23, 46/1 and 1:10 and no one even sniffed the two pace setters. Superfast Gulfstream strikes again.

In contrast Constitution was allowed to go 24, 47/3 and 1:11 in his easy looking wire job.

Commissioner broke sharp but Johnny was scrubbing him by mid-turn and I knew he was done. Dammit.

Okay, and I am also now THOROUGHLY convinced of a speed bias on the GP main track. For Wildcat Red and General a Rod to go at each other from the outset like that in the Fountain of Youth and not get inhaled, well, that tells you all you need to know. So under the circumstances, Top Billing ran GIANT to finish third, and he is THE horse I would want out of this race. But that's how I felt going into the FOY, so ...
by Mike Watchmaker 5:57 PM

WOW...there was a single live ticket to the Rainbow pick 6 at Gulfstream for $1.8 Million to the #13 who crossed the wire first but was taken down. Instead we have a $1.3 Million carryover

That is unreal.

Looked like GMoney choked the will out of Rise Up on the backstretch as he was about to engage Albano, who put in a brave effort. Guess the rail is worth about 8 lengths after all when compared to the 13th hole where Vicar broke from. No surprise that Intense Holiday was right there, think we both tabbed him as a major threat.

Gotham was drawn today, will try to do a horse-by-horse later in the week. Unbeaten Samraat looks like the one to catch, with Uncle Sigh once again a strong contender with new mount Corey Nakatani flying in. Grade 2 stake winner In Trouble comes in off a 5 month layoff, and two-time stakes winner Extrasexyhippzster will be returning to the site of his Don Rickles win. Those are the notables in the field of 11, which also has three (!) Pletcher entries that frankly don't look all that enticing.

I will be in attendance at the Big A on Saturday but might be a little distracted for the Gotham. If you get a chance check out the 5th Race on the card, state bred MSW going 6F, and let me know what you think of my horse, #5 Sanctify. Looks like a nice card for Saturday and I will post some thoughts later in the week.

Through the first 2 50 point races this thing looks wide open. Wildcat Red ran a very nice Fountain of Youth and showed some toughness battling the whole way through the stretch, but by no means did I leave that race thinking he would be a threat on the first Saturday in May, exiting what looked like an extended sprint. Of all the 3 year olds who ran at Gulfstream this past Saturday the one I thought projected out best was Mexicoma, off a 3 month layoff and stuck in the outside post with the short run up to the first turn, he took back 10 lengths and then tried to make a run with about 3F left coming wide on the turn and ran his final half mile in 48.14 sec., I'll be interested to see where he starts next to earn his way in to the Derby, and if away from Gulfstream will probably be looking to play there. Intense Holiday ran a good race to take the Risen Star and needed every bit of that long Fair Grounds stretch to finally catch Albano, can't knock the effort but he did get a very good trip and I question the strength of that field some.

Next up is the Gotham and we will see how these NY breds are going to hold up as I expect another battle between Uncle Sigh and Samraat, but I will be also interested in Financial Mogul, who has been training at Fair Hill in between trips to the hyperbaric chamber after coming out of the Holy Bull full of mucus and worked well over the tapeta surface there, and might be able to take advantage if there is a speed duel in front of him.

No kidding, you're with Parting Glass Racing? That's awesome! Looks like I have my single in the Pick 5 now.

Certainly looks like the one to beat off that near miss on the 9th, and you can't do better for a trainer than Bill Mott. He usually gets them to improve 2nd start.

The 4 looks like the early worry as his Cal races showed some serious speed. Depends on how he takes to the inner. I think your colt will handle the 6 on the turn. Only other possibles I see are the 9 coming late if a speed duel develops and the Schettino firster with the bullet 5f work this week.

Good luck man, I'll be watching! :shake:

Thanks Gandolf, I somehow caught the itch and was looking but not really expecting to actually buy in to anything and then last summer I saw Parting Glass offer this one and once I saw Mott was the trainer, I had to do it. The race on the 9th was one of the most exciting things I've experienced in a while and after watching it about 30 times still can't believe he didn't win that one.

As for saturday, I agree with your break down, I think we have the one to beat but the #4 looks like he has some speed, I do like him drawn to our inside though, the #9 is one he have to watch coming up behind us and the #8 is the first time starter who looks most ready here off some real strong works. If I come across any good info I will post here and I'll try to post some pics from the paddock (and hopefully the winner's circle).

Scouting the Gotham

One of my problems last week was working against the track bias with my final choices. Closers at Gulfstream are usually up against it, which was a big strike against Top Billing and Commissioner, although Commissioner may have just not wanted to run that day too. On the other hand, the long stretch at the Fairgrounds gives closers a good chance, so with 9 horses rated to be either on or pressing the pace, it stood to reason that a quality finisher like Intense Holiday would be right there at the wire, although Albano ran bigger than expected.

The inner course at Aqueduct is usually a pretty fair track. This year closers have been up against it a bit, but wiring the field at 8.5 furlongs is only hitting at 26% too, so it looks like the bias favors pressers a little bit. Field of 11 with a coupled entry for My Meadowview Farm that includes the favorite:

Early Speed

1A Samraat - 4 for 4 with two stakes wins on the inner, including the Grade 3 Withers last month in an 8.5 furlong duel with Uncle Sigh. Should be right up on the pace again but facing a little more pressure this time. Can't dismiss but the low odds will encourage us to look elsewhere. Final quarter of 26&4 in the last also begs 2nd look at others.

8 Extrasexyhippzster - 3 time stakes winner stretches out to two turns for the first time. Figures to be right near the lead based on his one turn sprint-style experience. Pedigree does not scream for distance but should be OK with 8.5 furlongs. Trombetta is only 4% in graded stakes for some reason despite decent overall numbers. Last quarter of his 1 mile stakes win was 25&3, so he could be in the hunt for a long time.

Pace Pressers

4 Uncle Sigh - Ran basically the same race as Samraat in the Withers before eventually losing by a length. Will try to turn the tables this time. Similar race mean similar final quarter time, 26&4. Gets a jockey upgrade to Nakatani, which honestly may make the difference.

6 Deceived - After finishing a distant 3rd to Samraat in the Damon Runyan this guy drew off in an N1X optional claimer to win by 8 lengths. Likes the track (1 win, 1 show) but will need to strongly improve on his last effort to contend. Drew away with a 25&4 close in his last, not bad.

2 In Trouble - Makes his return to the track since winning the Grade 2 Futurity at Belmont last September at 6 furlongs. Stretching out beyond 6 furlongs for the first as well, so there are plenty of questions about this one. Sprinter experience may make the pace a little more heated.

10 Harpoon - Runner up in the G3 Sam F Davis in Tampa now heads north having never finished worse than second in his five races at five different tracks. Closed the final quarter in 26 with a pretty good pace to the race. Has never gone off at over 2-1 but the morning line says 10-1, which screams value.

9 Master Lightning - Has beaten 7 out of 25 horses in three graded stakes in his career, so he looks non-competitive here. Surprising considering Pletcher is has been his trainer from the start.

7 Classic Giacnroll - Finished a good second at the G2 Jerome in January before a fading 4th place finish in the Withers. If he runs back to that Jerome number he might not be too far out of it. Move him up if there's an off track (not expected).

1 Noble Cornerstone - Coupled entry with Samraat adds was off slow in the Sam F Davis and never really lifted a hoof for Kent Desormeaux, who comes in again to ride for Wesley Ward. They'll try blinkers on him to see if that helps him focus. No value due to the coupling but he's could be sneaky good based on his 2013 efforts.

Off the Pace

5 Monopolize - Another Pletcher longshot, broke his maiden on the inner in December, then was shipped to Florida and finished about 9 lengths behind Top Billing in his allowance win before his Fountain of Youth show finish. Adds blinkers to hopefully get him more involved earlier in the race. Not sure if that's the best idea given the amount of speed in this one. Doesn't not look like a contender based on speed figures.

Closers

3 Financial Mogul - The only closer in a race filled with pace, should get a chance to run at something late. Ran into Cairo Prince and Intense Holiday in the Holy Bull, finishing 8 lengths back, Cairo Prince again in the Nashua, finishing 2nd only 2 1/2 lengths behind and beating Noble Moon. Final quarters of 26 and 25 in those two races with decent upfront pace established. Was working well in Florida before shipping in, and draws Shaun Bridgemohan into town. Morning line of 10-1 shows a bit of value.

In terms of value, Harpoon is my top choice, followed by Financial Mogul, although there's every possibility that Samraat and Uncle Sigh are the ones duking it out in the stretch again. Likely need all four in the Pick3/Pick4. Will be against Extrasexyhippzster here.

Tom Fool winner Strapping Groom, a very accomplished horse, goes 1:09&4 with a quick early pace to set the table.

One race earlier, Mean Season, in his 3rd race ever, breaks to the lead and cruises by open lengths to a time of 1:09&2.

He's one to watch this summer.

Sorry Lloyd, tough miss on Sanctify, at least he got a piece. When they said 23 plus on the first quarter it pretty much sealed the deal. That #4 was seeing 22s out west, had enough left in the tank this time. Next time!

Thanks Gandolf, jockey said he didn't break that long and he needs to go longer. We'll see what Mott says and see what the next move is.

Another great stretch duel between Samraat and Uncle Sigh, with In Trouble also in the mix to make it a three-way battle. Super race. Great determination from all 3. Samraat makes it five straight and punches his ticket to Churchill.

No chance for anyone not within a couple of lengths of the lead today.
