Rick Vanden Hurk - Tuesday Marlins Starter

Fondybadger

CTG Partner
Rick Vanden Hurk, rhp, Marlins
Born: May 22, 1985. B-T: R-R. Ht.: 6-5. Wt.: 190. Signed: Netherlands, 2002. Signed by: Fred Ferreira.

Signed at 17 out of the Marlins' Dutch academy, Vanden Hurk was one of the better European finds for the club under former international scouting supervisor Fred Ferreira. A converted catcher, Vanden Hurk has pitched for just three years but is polished. He's also one of the hardest workers in the Florida system and has great makeup. Shoulder tendinitis slowed him early in the 2005 season, and an elbow problem caused him to be shut down in August. In between he made progress at two Class A stops. A strike-thrower, he pitches at 88-92 mph and tops out at 94 mph with his fastball, which has late life. He tightened up his curveball and used it more often, as he did with a developing changeup. Mound time is a must for Vanden Hurk, who still lapses into bad habits mechanically, such as throwing across his body. Though he figures to start out back at high Class Jupiter for the third straight year, he still projects as a No. 3 or 4 starter in the majors.

Marlins purchased the contract of RHP Rick Vanden Hurk from Double-A Carolina.

He'll start Tuesday's game. The Marlins lost what little starting pitching depth they had when they traded Yusmiero Petit for Jorge Julio, a move that looked like a misstep initially and seems quite a bit worse now. Vanden Hurk is rather promising, but he's a 21-year-old who has totaled 150 innings since being signed out of the Netherlands in 2002. He's at least one year and maybe two away from being ready.

#11 Rick Vanden Hurk - Starting Pitcher - 22 years old - Throws: Right - Bats: Right

Signed at age 17 out of the Marlins’ Dutch academy, Rick Vanden Hurk has been one of the more successful European imports in the system. Pitching in just 8 games between the Gulf Coast League and Jupiter, Rick was absolutely dominant this season. He had a combined 1.80era to go with a 0.92whip and a 14.76k’s per 9 innings. The one caution area is the 5.04 walks per 9 that he was allowing, but that can be attributed to his lack of command after coming off of elbow surgery. Throwing on a steep downhill plane, Rick throws a 96-97mph fastball to go with a big 12-6 rolling curveball, which hitters have a hard time with coming off his fastball. Vanden Hurk was invited to the Hawaii Winter League this season and had a very promising short season there. His velocity started to fade as the HWB season progressed but that is not much to worry about. In 40 innings, Rick compiled a 2-2 record with a 3.60era with 17 walks and 60 strikeouts. Opposing batters hit just .162 off of him in the HWB. The 6-5 Dutchman should start the season off in Carolina and spend most of the season there before having a chance to make the big club out in 2008. Although if the big team needs bullpen help, he may be in line to make the Marlins out of Spring Training.

wtf is all that shit?!@:)

I really don't understand most of it either when I'm looking at Baseball Prospectus. That said, I enjoy looking at the top 20 players they're most similar to. If I understand right the list is based on their current age, what they've done already, and what their makeup and expectations are. It appears that they're expecting Vanden Hurk to be in the big leagues for around 5-6 years and have a solid time. He's got about a 10% chance of being a front end pitcher who looks like Barry Zito did around the same age.

A bit more on the similiarity score...
<table border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" width="100%"><tbody><tr><td class="subhead">Similarity Score

</td><td class="right">
</td></tr></tbody></table> Similarity Score is a relative measure of a player's comparability. Its scale is very different from the Bill James similarity scores; a score of 100 is assigned to a perfect comparable, while a score of 0 represents a player who is meaningfully similar. Players can and frequently do receive negative similarity scores, and they are dropped from the analysis. A score above 50 indicates that a player is substantially comparable, and scores in excess of 70 are very unusual. The comparable player observations are weighted based on their similarity score in constructing a forecast.

Its just crazy how much some people analyze this sport sometimes. I can't even read this without grabbing my ti89 and a pad of graph paper. Heady shit indeed.
