JJ is almost certainly going pro, declaring by the Monday 1/15 deadline.

But where will Harbaugh go?

Every open NFL job wants him, and some teams with coaches in place want him !!!

The Raiders are apparently leaning Antonio Pierce whom the players love.

Jimmy - come to the Chargers please! We need you !!!!
 
With Jimmy set to interview with Atlanta again (reportedly), cannot help but think both sides are using each other for leverage in other deals.

Jimmy IMO using it for leverage with UM and the Chargers, and ATL IMO using it for leverage with Belichick to drive his price down a bit ("see BB we have other options as well so lower your price tag please).

Then he *might* go a little bit higher (possibly) than where he is currently projected in the mid first round to a lesser team than he is going to go to in the mid first round, and he can learn from a solid starter. He would have also risked injury by coming back another year. Could have also risked JH leaving AA and who knows what a new coach might have in mind, though it will likely be Moore being promoted.

Pretty difficult to go out on a higher note than he just did (aside from winning the Heisman) and now he can go healthy to the combine and show his physical abilities to the scouts.

As strong a situation as one could ask for hence I don't think anyone should really be surprised by it.

Go get that money and take a clipboard and sit behind a bona fide starter for the next few years then take the reigns and make it happen in the Pros.

I think this was a very solid decision for the kid. Only Caleb is sure to go ahead of him. He can probably match Drake and Jayden at the Combine and who knows, maybe even push Caleb to get into the Top 5 or 7 picks.

Agree 100% but then I was also thrilled to get Josh Rosen at #10 when Lamar went at the end of the first round

I thought Rosen would be a decent pro. Wow was I wrong.
He is a complete disaster.
The scouts were right about him.
Even still, AZ took him at 10.
It felt like he had so much to prove that 4 other QBs got taken ahead
of him and he would be so motivated.

All good points. Especially the injury thing. He definitely wasn't 100 percent a lot of the year. Great kid, hope he does well. A winner, as the gms like to say.

You never got to see him play in a passing offense with future NFL WRs.

Jim and company were happy enough to do the least amount needed to win games.

There wasn't a playing receiver that was going to be a 20+ yard down field threat.

Throw JJ on a USC LSU offense and he was sitting in NY in December.

I'm not saying he's Jaden Daniels.

I'm saying that we actually got robbed of prime JJ for two reasons...

1.) Shoulder injury then knee injury
2.) Michigan offense

The injuries are all the more reason for him to leave right now.

Penix has had tons of injuries and it will come up in every eval by every team.

JJ is the modern day version of Ken Dorsey. He's a nice college player but is not talented enough to be a starting QB in the NFL.

Philly has fired the coordinators and is keeping Sirianni. It would be a shock if Harbaugh ends up in the NFL this year and its not with the Chargers.

Ken was picked 241st overall, in the 7th round.

JJ will very likely be a mid first round pick.

Much, much, much stronger arm than Dorsey had and a much higher ceiling IMO.

JJ will not and should not go in the first round but good luck to whoever picks him that high.

I saw where the Michigan state law requires the job to be open for 7 days before hiring. Is there any chance it isn't Sherrone Moore? And if it is, how do Michigan fans feel about that? Kind of feels like it's a move to try to keep the roster intact, especially in light of what Alabama, Washington, and Arizona recently experienced, but is that a little short sighted? Are they expecting any kind of fallout from the NCAA? I don't know anything, just asking questions

Pretty much everything you said. It's 100 percent Moore. I'm mixed on it. Hard to follow a legend, but I also don't want to lose any of that defense coming back. No idea what to expect from him at all. Nothing to base it off as he has no experience. Could be over his head, hope not though.

NCAA was after Jim only. That will probably be over.

Jimmy was trying to get Santa Ono to behave like Santa Claus and give him everything including Full Immunity against firing with cause in case of NCAA penalties.

If anyone on the staff (past or present) was hit with a violation, then Jimmy would have received a Level I violation.

In my opinion he was leaving no matter what and his agent(s) just negotiated extremely well to get the maximum amount of everything from all sides (Chargers, UM, Falcons) before making the decision.

JH is just a really smart dude. Congrats to him and his 84 children (sorry I mean 6 kids).

Either take the keys to a program that is going to be nowhere near as strong in 2024 and still faces NCAA sanctions, or go with Harbaugh to LA.

How do you turn away the HC job at a place like this? That is so hard to do.

But he is facing serious potential headwinds and a depleted roster.

2024 through likely 2027 or beyond will resemble the RichRod and Brady Hoke years more than they will the Harbaugh years.

They pretty much gave him all of that. You do what you can do to keep the best coach in the country. There was a lot of politics at play for sure, but he was probably gone no matter what. He did his job and bought the natty home to the University of Michigan. He was originally only going to stay 7 years, it was a gentlemen's agreement with him and Hackett, but he bombed the Minny interview. Stayed longer than expected, and I am grateful for it as a fan.

Roster isn't depleted at all. 4 top 25 picks on defense. On offense, they need to do a lot of work, but defensively it's a stout unit.
 
The pool of candidates for elite level college coaches is very shallow. I imagine as more of the best and brightest go to the NFL, that will only continue. First time coaches can work out. Kirby comes to mind, but yeah, I'd think you'd want a guy who has run a program before to have the keys to Michigan. Doesn't even have to be at the FBS level

Numerous first-time HC's have worked out. It is too many to name just in the last 20 years alone so I did not try.

DC's and OC's in CFB often time make great HC's.

Everyone needs to start somewhere.

Lincoln Riley and Brent Venables at OU had never been HC's anywhere before getting the job.

Barry Switzer back in the early 70's was elevated from OC to HC but that was obviously a different time.

Who are those 4? Not trying to be a smartass, I am just curious.

I have a buddy who is a UM fan (he is not even close to the knowledge level of the program that you and @B.A.R. have) and he told me about a DB he thought was a 1st round draft choice and I looked him up and he is projected 6th round.

So I am just curious about the draft projections of these 4.

Four guys in the first 25 picks from a defensive unit these days is a ton.

Offense is all the rage now. You already know that.

For the 2025 draft. Not 2024. Will Johnson cb, Mason Graham dline, Kenneth Grant Dline and possibly Derrick Moore edge. 1 on offense too at the least, Loveland the tight end.

Yes you are totally correct. All of those guys even Loveland are projecting well at the next level.

Kenneth Grant shouldddd be higher. He's a monster. Will be consensus top 15 when all said and done imo. A freak.

Moore is more based on skill set. They have some studs in the secondary too ready to burst such as Keon Saab. High 4 Star kid.

By no means do I think they'll go 15-0, or even win the big ten but they'll compete and can go 9-3, 8-4 with that tough schedule. Just hard to win with a young first year QB. Unless they get someone in the portal.

Anything can happen with the expanded playoffs. Buckeyes look insanely good right now on paper but that game at end of the year won't mean as much as it used to. I say that even if Michigan wins. Buckeyes will probably still get in playoffs with 2-3 losses.

I think a lot of defense success was from the Ravens scheme... Who knows if that scheme continues or not.

Jim will still be helping Michigan with his connections. Moore is his guy..

Enjoy him in LA, he's already missed. Just an unbelievable coach.

Yes, the regular season is going to be football porn next year. Incredible matchups every week it seems. Lot of travel, especially in the big ten with those teams playing in different time zones almost weekly is wild to me. I'm for it. Hate the bowls now so this makes up for it

I'm indifferent on Moore. Just couldn't really do much else at the moment imo because of the roster. Harbaugh was big on culture, I guess Moore is someone who understands it and can carry it on. We'll see. Don't really have high expectations for a year 1 coach or a year 1 QB. Part me wanted Michigan to go outside though but really who is available? There's only so many Harbaughs, Meyers, Sabans and Switzers out there.

Don is a stud, just needs more confidence. Mullings is a good back too, expecting him to get a lot of carries. Yes, losing JJ definitely the back breaker. Just a cerebral kid who can make the throws in tough situations when needed. Hard to replace.

Yeah, just never know when another one will come your way again. It's not easy winning these things. But I think with the 12 team playoffs it will be fun again and bring more parity.

Michigan Athletic Director, Warde Manuel, is a big problem there. It's pretty sad when your school president (Ono) has to get involved with sports. Manuel will probably be gone within the year, he's botched several things at the helm. Jim was most likely gone anyways. Michigan messed up not taking care of him in 21 or 22. Got to be proactive and not reactive, and they failed not giving him a huge deal then. Knowing Harbaugh, he probably took that personally. I personally don't think that was the big factor though, he wanted to get a Superbowl ring. He finished what he set out to do for Michigan and it worked out in the end.
