Dave Clawson Announces Donavon Greene, Je’Vionte’ Nash, and Chase Monroe Will Miss Entire 2021 Season

The Deacs will be without 3 key contributors from last season’s squad due to season ending injuries to redshirt freshman WR Donavon Greene, redshirt senior OL Je’Vionte’ Nash, and redshirt junior LB Chase Monroe. The nature of the injuries is not known at this time.


Donavon Greene put together a terrific redshirt freshman season, grabbing 29 passes for 582 yards and 2 touchdowns in 8 games. Greene was slated to have a breakout year this season and was listed as one half of the 4th best wide receiver duo in the nation for 2021 by Pro Football Focus.

As the deep threat in the passing game, Greene’s absence could have a massive effect on the Deacs’ ability to move the ball through the air this season. Wake will likely rely on redshirt sophomore AT Perry to be the next man up.


Je’Vionte’ Nash started all 9 games as a redshirt senior last season at right tackle. The offensive line is probably the worst place logistically (all injuries are bad) to start losing players, especially experienced ones. We’ll have to wait and see if the coaching staff has confidence in someone stepping into the starting role at right tackle or if some of the players end up shifting to different positions on the line to compensate.


Chase Monroe finished the 2020 season with 19 total tackles, 2 tackles for loss, and 0.5 sacks in 8 games. Linebacker is a spot where the Deacs are relatively young, with Monroe being one of three upperclassman on the roster. As defense has been an area where Wake has struggled for the last couple of seasons, the Deacs are going to need some of the younger players to step up.


Injuries continue to be the worst and losing players before the season starts is even worse.

WASHINGTON STATE STARTING slot receiver and fan favorite Renard Bell has torn his ACL and is out for the season. Bell, a 5-8, 162-pound graduate student from Los Angeles, made the announcement on Twitter Friday afternoon.

Bell, who manned the Y receiver position for WSU, was named Pac-12 honorable mention last season. He led the Cougars with 33 catches, producing 337 hashes and two TDs. His 84.2 receiving yards per game was fourth in the Pac-12.

The Cougs will also miss his wide smile and presence on the practice field of someone who constantly radiates energy and positivity.

Bell has started 29 games over his WSU career, playing in 43. After a redshirt season in 2016, he has amassed 147 receptions for 1,656 yards with 16 TDs.

With Bell out, fellow star inside receiver Travell Harris at the H is the Cougs' lone returning wide receiver starter. Wazzu, however, has considerable talent in the cupboard on the inside.

Joey Hobert would appear to be the leading candidate headed into fall camp to take Bell’s place. Hobert (5-11, 179) as a freshman last season out of Ladera Ranch, Calif., appeared in all four of WSU’s contests last fall, with three receptions for 31 yards. Hobert, who has terrific hands, was listed as the No. 2 Y on last season's depth chart.

The Cougs also have two newly-arrived inside receivers from the signing class in Joshua Meredith and Orion Peters. Wide receivers coach Andre Allen and WSU offensive coordinator Brian Smith have both said Meredith can be something special.

Meanwhile, backing up Harris, are a pair of transfers in Lincoln Victor and Drake Owen. They did battle this spring to be the No. 2 H, with Victor owning a slight edge in our book after the spring. Owen shined early in spring ball, but finished as a consistent No. 3 slot player, filling in for both Hobert and Victor at times with the second team. Colorado native and third-year sophomore Billy Pospisil appeared on WSU’s depth chart as the No. 2 H last fall but spent the spring more in the No. 3 mix.

Colorado wide receiver Maurice Bell out for season​


By Brian Howell, Boulder Daily Camera/BuffZone: Colorado’s talented group of receivers has lost one of its veterans for the season.
Junior Maurice Bell suffered a torn Achilles’ tendon in a recent workout and will not play during the 2021 campaign.
Bell caught nine passes for 89 yards and a touchdown during the five-game regular season in 2020 and added a 26-yard catch in the Alamo Bowl.

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Former Bowling Green Purples’ star and Navy starter Jamale Carothers is returning to his old stomping grounds as the running back announced via twitter that he will be transferring to Western Kentucky University to finish out his remaining college eligibility. The 5-9, 203 pound back will be looking to replicate the numbers he put up in 2019, when he ran for 734 yards and 14 TDs for Navy. Last season, Carothers toted the rock 97 times for 358 yards and 2 TDs.

Keaton Upshaw, one of UK’s top receiving threats, could miss 2021 season​

University of Kentucky tight end Keaton Upshaw is expected to miss most of the 2021 season with an undisclosed injury.

Upshaw, who will be a junior this season, was UK’s second-leading player in receptions (16) last year and led the Wildcats in receiving touchdowns (three). He was expected to be a significant part of the unit fielded by first-year offensive coordinator Liam Coen; the Los Angeles Rams, for whom Coen was an assistant the last three years, make frequent use of their tight ends in the passing game.

Upshaw has played in 24 career games and made six total starts after redshirting in 2018.

Redshirt sophomore Bru McCoy was arrested on suspicion of a felony more than a week ago, USCFootball.com has learned. The wide receiver was charged with intimate partner violence with injury, according to an LAPD spokesperson. McCoy, 21, was released on $50,000 bail on July 24th, the same day of his arrest. He is scheduled to appear in court on November 24.

"USC does not condone violence of any kind," the athletic department said when contacted for a statement. "We are aware of the situation, and USC’s Office for Equity, Equal Opportunity, and Title IX is reviewing it. Because of federal student privacy laws, we are unable to share additional information at this time.

“The student-athlete has been temporarily removed from team activities.”

UCF RB Bentavious Thompson no longer listed on official team roster

Ahead of the start of preseason fall practice, which begins Wednesday, UCF's football roster was updated and one name is noticeably missing as of Monday afternoon.

UCF redshirt senior running back Bentavious Thompson is no longer listed on the official roster online. When asked what this meant in regards to Thompson's team status, a UCF spokesperson had no comment on the matter and instead deferred the question to head coach Gus Malzahn who is speaking with the media on Tuesday at UCF's media day.

It's currently unclear why Thompson is not part of the team's roster. A source said Thompson has not entered his name in the NCAA Transfer Portal.

From a Washington podcast 8/6 camp recap

The good news was that sophomore outside linebacker Zion Tupuola-Fetui is expected back much sooner than originally anticipated after suffering a non-contact achilles injury during spring football.
The not-so-good news was that two inside linebackers - Miki Ah You and Will Latu - would not be part of the program this year, as Lake said they were dealing with some 'personal and family' issues that needed to be resolved.
There was one more piece of good news: Lake stated that Dylan Morris was most definitely the starting quarterback, although he later amended the news to say that the competition is always open and if Morris doesn't continue to improve and Patrick O'Brien continues to impress, O'Brien could be in line to take over the spot. But in all the years we've been covering the team, you could count the number of times the head coach has announced the starting quarterback after the first practice on one hand. It's just never done.

Three Arizona State assistant coaches are now on leave as a result of the recruiting visits last year during covid restrictions.

TE coach Adam Breneman was put on leave in July. This week WR coach and DB coach Prentice Gill and Chris Hawkins are the latest staff members impacted.
 
Auburn DL Tyrone Truesdell no longer on team, he had started 20 games over two years. 6th year sr Transfer Tony Fair (last 2 years UAB) figures to have increased role.
 
UCLA QB DTR has not been at UCLA fall camp. They play week zero and opened camp early. His absence has not been explained.
 
Rice's only returning defender receiving all conference recognition (honorable mention) likely out season.

Rice Football: Owls lose defensive starter for the season​

Rice football will not be entering the 2021 season injury-free. Defensive lineman De’Braylon Carroll is expected to miss the season with a leg injury.​

Starting defensive tackle De’Braylon Carroll is expected to miss the 2021 Rice football season after suffering a lower leg injury this summer, multiple sources have confirmed to The Roost. A second-team All-Conference USA preseason selection by Athlon Sports, Carroll was projected to be one of the most impactful interior defenders in the conference this season.
Carroll burst onto the scene as a true freshman. A year removed from leading an elite Duncanville High School defense, Carroll was named to the Pro Football Focus All-Fresmany team, playing in all 12 games as a rotation player behind Myles Adams.
He elevated his play further in 2020, starting all five games for the Owls last season and tying for second on the team with three tackles for a loss. Carroll was expected to reprise that role in 2021, slotting in alongside Elijah Garcia on the Rice defensive line. Instead, he’ll be preparing for the 2022 season.
A silver lining for Rice, amidst the bad news, is the relative depth they’ve developed at the position over the past year.
Ikenna Enechukwu has had a strong camp and brings the versatility to play several positions along the line. Caleb James, who practiced with the first team at moments last fall when Carroll was sidelined, is another name to watch. And keep an eye on true freshman Blake Boenisch. The 300+ pound athlete is can throw bodies around in the trenches with the best of them.
Rice football will took the field for their first scrimmage of fall camp on Saturday. We’ll have notes on what the line looks like during those sessions in practice reports later this week.

Doty sprained his foot in practice but is still expected to be healthy for Week 1 against Eastern Illinois, Josh Kendall of The Athletic reports.

ANALYSIS
It was originally believed that Doty was dealing with a more serious injury but the fact that head coach Shane Beamer believes he can still suit up in the team's first game is a positive sign. The sophomore shot-caller completed 60.6 percent of his passes for 405 yards last season. If he's unable to play to begin the season, it appears that true freshman Colten Gauthier would be next in line followed by FCS transfer Jason Brown.

Kentucky football coach Mark Stoops named Will Levis the team's starting quarterback.

I'm sure no one will surprised to hear Levis played both RB and QB at Penn State.

Confirms my suspicion that Stoops prefers running backs to play QB. I think he lines up all the running backs and has them throw a pass. The one who comes closest to throwing a spiral instead of end over end becomes the QB

I think he has a solid arm based on everything I read prior to locking in my UK play a while back. I had him penciled in as QB so not a surprise. Also not a surprise that the Auburn kid who lost out is headed back into the portal. Not sure where he ends up but maybe a smaller school would be a better fit for him and his skill set.

It can only go up....Terry Wilson was awful and neither Joey Gatewood or Beau Allen could beat TW out last year....tells me both BA and JG were bad as well. Stoops, in his press conference said this decision was "clear." I took that to mean Will Levis was clearly better than the other two...what does this mean to me? I think we went from a bad QB situation to at least an average QB situation. Still going to be run first but hopefully we'll be "average enough" through the air so teams won't be able to completely stack the box against the run. Just my take....
