Coaching Changes/Injuries/Players leaving for bowls etc.

Butch Jones verbally accepts CU's offer (5 yr / 13.5m). Is this a good hire? I am so sick of my team being bad.

They could certainly do worse.

He succeeded in maintaining momentum at CMU and Cincy, but really never took either to another level from what Brian Kelly had established. This will be a different deal for Butch as its much more of a reclamation project than anything. He will run some variation of the spread which has become the norm in the Pac 12. As ever, the most important thing is recruiting, and that is something we'll just have to wait and see.

Don't know if it's still a rumor. It was on the news tonight, but we all know that does not make it true.

I read his Wiki page and wasn't very impressed. It's one thing to ride on the coattails of a good coach (ie Neuheisel after McCartney), but it's another to turn around a team. We really need someone that can come in and turn it around. Mrtake said I shouldn't expect anyone better.

paul rhoads is from ankeny, a few miles away from ames. i don't know that he is career motivated, almost think iowa state is his dream job. and that's pretty fuckin cool

obviously cash will rear its ugly head, be curious to see where it goes...but he's at home, and doing well for himself. not bad when you're born and bred with a level head

The East? No diss....cmon...up for grabs man......Big ass school...they act small tho

tennessee is a part of the old garb. It is a terrible state to recruit. Any recruit worth a damn means traveling a good distance. The Tennessee mystique is over unless they start paying players over their market value which they very well may try to do.

Id gladly take Rick Neuheisel as my football coach.

They have no recruiting base. The state of TN is weak. They cant come in to SC and take the top kids anymore. To recruit NC means competition with UF, UGA, Clem, and USC for the top kids. They use to make a living in these 2 states.

However their facilities are great and they have the biggest recruiting budget in the country.

It sounds like Bob Diaco will be staying put....crossing my fingers and hopefully nothing new comes to the service!

When will Barry Alvarez drop his own single "Without Me"

Can I ask your reasons? He seems to destroy any program he takes over.

What did he do to destroy UDub? Not sure what he was doing wrong at ucla either. He wasnt a world beater, but he had that team turning up when he was fired and look what everyone of his recruits did this year ... They won another division title. And his overall record does not indicate a destroyer of programs either.

  • Southern Miss. got zero wins for $790K in pay this season, plus a $2.1M buyout
  • Auburn exceeded $1 million for each of three victories
  • 11 schools paid more than $600,000 per win this season
</aside>1:15PM EST December 6. 2012 - The cost of a football victory keeps climbing for Kansas.
This season, the university paid Charlie Weis $2.5 million for one win — the highest cost per victory among schools whose teams won at least one game, according to USA TODAY Sports' annual analysis of football coaches' compensation. Kansas paid Turner Gill $1.05 million for each of two wins last season, after paying Gill $700,000 for each of three wins in 2010.
Orange Bowl-bound Northern Illinois, meanwhile, gave coach Dave Doeren a raise this season and ended uplowering its cost per victory. Doeren delivered 12 wins, including one in the Mid-American Conference title game, at $35,000 apiece before leaving for North Carolina State. His 10 wins last season, also including the MAC title game, cost $37,100 each. Those figures made NIU No. 3 in cost efficiency in both seasons.
COSTLY WINS: Coaches with highest cost per win
Kent State's Darell Hazell was the most cost-effective coach this season, with 11 wins at a little more than $27,000 apiece. Louisiana-Monroe's Todd Berry was next, with eight at $31,250 apiece.
Among the conferences whose champions automatically qualify for the Bowl Championship Series, the most cost-effective coach was Rutgers' Kyle Flood, with nine wins at $83,333 each. No other coach in any of those conferences had a cost per victory of less than $130,000, based on the amounts paid by the schools exclusive of bowl games and performance bonuses.
Kansas is the only NCAA Bowl Subdivision school among the top five in cost inefficiency in each of the past three seasons. This season, KU paid over $1 million more per win more than the school that had the lowest rate of return last season.
In 2011, Mississippi paid nearly $1.4 million for each of the two wins from Houston Nutt, who was fired. In 2010, Texas paid just over $1 million per win from Mack Brown, who delivered five that season.
Southern Mississippi set the standard this season, paying $790,000 to Ellis Johnson, who produced an 0-12 record, was fired, and is set to receive more than $2.1 million in buyout money on a monthly basis through late December 2015.
Auburn also exceeded more than $1 million a win, paying now-fired Gene Chizik $3.5 million for three victories. Among coaches who have not been terminated, Iowa's Kirk Ferentz was second to Weis in cost per win at $958,750 for each of the Hawkeyes' four. Under the terms of a 10-year contract that began in 2010, Ferentz is scheduled to receive $150,000 in pay increases for next season.
In addition to Southern Mississippi, 11 schools paid more than $600,000 per victory this season, including eight that paid at least $725,000. Last season, six schools paid $600,000 or more per victory.

Wow saw that Alvarez presser today. He blasted Bielema every way possible. Always wanted Alvarez at Oklahoma. Big fan of his. Hope he ends up coming back full time in Wisconsin.

Nebraska and Tennessee .... Talk about two football schools that are one and the same. Pelinni wouldn't be doing anything but changing colors.

post from JC Shurburtt on 247

Well, just as I've always stated, it's a tough job, particularly when the Vols aren't winning. You have to recruit well out-of-state to win at Tennessee at the level they are used to because there isn't the in-state talent base. Because they will now be on their fourth coaching staff in six years and they have only had three winning seasons in the last eight.
On top of that, Alabama is way up. Auburn, while down, won a National Title two seasons ago. Ole Miss and Mississippi State are better and have good recruiters. Clemson and South Carolina are good. There's been a talent drought in Kentucky and James Franklin's Vanderbilt staff seems determined to at least split what little talent there is in the state and Memphis, which has the athletes, is a straight-up dumpster fire to recruit in (check the major NCAA cases coming out of that city).
So where does the talent to compete with Florida, Georgia, USC, etc., come from? You have to go evaluate second-tier players in Florida and Georgia, hit the junior colleges, work Atlantic Coast states like Virginia and Maryland and New Jersey and even go into Texas and get a kid or two.
That doesn't always add up to a winning roster in the SEC.
This job, unlike even Ole Miss and Mississippi State, which has the built-in talent base and kids that just want to stay at home, is not a quick fix unless they are winning and they have not been. It could be a situation where Tennessee is in the wilderness for a while, like LSU in the 1990s or Alabama from DuBose through Shula. Those two programs, though, have the in-state players to re-stock the roster quickly. UT does not.
So you have to hire somebody that can go and get the talent. That's why Lane Kiffin wasn't really that bad of a hire for the Vols. He had a top 5-10 recruiting class coming in and would have continued to do well in that regard. Dooley didn't have the staff to go win many battles just on personality, so the talent level decreased significantly.
There is an opportunity in the state of Tennessee for the 2014 class. The state is way, way up with regards to high-end talent, so there's a chance to get a good core going. You build your core, you win 7-9, then you recruit your butt off for 2015 and string a bunch of classes together and all of a sudden you are back because you have the talent level to be back.
If you are a new coach coming into that situation, you need to be confident that you can go out and re-stock the roster quickly (as we saw with Dooley, they aren't going to give you very much time) and start competing. The question you have to answer is can you get it done on the recruiting trail. I think Charlie Strong definitely would have. The situation he inherited at Louisville was not all that different from UT and he went into South Florida and signed a bunch of great athletes and got the job done. Unfortunately for Tennessee, Strong is a loyal guy. He's loyal to his players and to the AD that gave him his first job. The money was matched, so he stayed.
You may think I am crazy, but if I thought he would come I would go hire Dabo Swinney over a coach like Bobby Petrino. I would go hire Tommy Bowden or Butch Davis- guys that have proven they can go and sign the players needed to compete at the highest level in college football. Petrino will be able to scheme and keep them competitive and really can win a lot of games, but I don't think he's going to be able to go get the talent to compete with the Alabamas, LSUs and Floridas of the world.

fml. I'm hearing butch jones might be the leader for the ut job.
I hope Tenny doesnt come sniffing around for Chavis....I quite like him at LSU

Also Sonny goin to Cal is just weird....I know a guy who knows him and he said he was lookin for a place to kick his feet up and get paid....

Pitt better send us a good transfer for not trying to take Chryst. You can jam a ice pick in my ear if UW hires Childress or Bevell.

Chavis ... Of course, I am no where close to the Bayou, but I haven't heard his name linked to anything? Somewhere in your brain do you think Chavis is being left out of the party(s)?!?!?! :tiphat:

Tennessee just needs to say fuck it and hire Petrino. They've already been embarrassed in this coaching search and have nothing more to lose by it. Can't be much worse than the Kiffin hire and at least Petrino is a proven winner. Gotta wonder if SEC AD's are blackballing him, probably rightfully so.

Tennessee: Sources tell us that Butch Jones has been offered the job. No decision expected tonight.
South Florida: Multiple outlets are reporting and we are told but haven't verified that Chad Morris will interview with South Florida. Earlier in the day Steven Godfrey reported that Mike MacIntyre interviewed as well. We can confirm.

That Cinci job must be a great stepping stone job.

Am I the only one that thinks Paul Rhodes is the obvious choice for Wisconsin?

Yet another terrible hire for Tenny. Amazing as a kid of the 90s that the school cannot do better than they have.

Couldnt agree more, but no one wanted to coach there that they were willing to talk to. Tennessee is an antiquated football school just like Nebraska. Neither will be as good as they once were ever again mainly bc of the recruiting base. But back to the current Tenny job. Butch Jones just sort of reminds me of a greasy guy and while I didn't hear them out of my own ears I understand he took some digs at Colorado in his press conference yesterday. What's that all about? Tennessee should have bitten the bullet and hired Bobby Petrino or Butch Davis. Yes, these are also character guys, but they are not only names, but winners.
