Coaching Carousel 2024

So how do we define "better"? It is subjective and personal, in the eye of the beholder. A PAC 12 loaded with the best MWC teams, the Dakota schools as you suggest (I really really do not think those other teams you mentioned have a chance at all to go PAC 12). But yeah, it's good...what is it up against on TV? What is the competition? Is South Dakota State vs Oregon State going to out draw Texas Tech and West Virginia? No it won't. So if we are talking millions of people watching a reborn PAC 12 with these MWC teams and these far north Dakota schools that people don't care about nationally, it isn't going to move the needle. I'm sorry to disagree.

UCF - Iowa State got 526k viewers. South Dakota State - North Dakota State, by far the two biggest brands in FCS and exactly who we are talking about in this hypothetical PAC 12 - when they played the same week, they got 174k people watching.

What is better football doesn't mean the country will tune in. A lot goes into it.
Man this takes work...I'm a marketing nut and also play the other card every day....I can tell you why my conference doesn't work a million times over. I can also tell you why it needs to happen.

You know I'm the kind of person who is not going to say I'm right, you're wrong. I could be wrong, we could both be wrong in different ways, or both right in different ways.

I would prefer that FCS stays the way it is, but nothing stays the same. So yeah, in some ways, the Dakota schools, or cherry pick a few of the top teams and having them compete at the FBS level, that would be pretty cool. But it all comes down to money and does it make sense for all parties involved, including the media partners. So unless Apple or Google or somebody were to just overpay to get a piece of the pie, I really don't see a big windfall from traditional media because what they want won't be found in this new bring the best FCS teams in conference. They want big numbers of people watching. You and I love all different kinds of football. There are way more fans who are casual and follow just their team. As much as they have tried to break it, the sport is still very regional except at the biggest and highest level. People who typically watch the power conference just aren't going to care for these new small far and away schools. And what are the kickoff times going to be? This was always a constraint for PAC 12 games. Sure "we" love PAC 12 after dark. But in the part of the country where most of the people care about college football, they go to bed and sure California has a shit ton of people - they don't care about college football. We know this because they don't even attend UCLA or USC games.

I can see the why it needs to or should happen. Somebody could create a really competitive league with some new schools who have fan bases who care, but in the end, it will just be another Mountain West type league and it will get Mountain West type numbers. Which really, that is probably where these schools end up, not a jump to the new PAC 12. PAC 12 has so far skipped over inviting any of these FCS schools and they picked Utah State instead? Maybe they are saving it for some big offseason rebrand and annoucnement. I don't follow FBS anymore so when those schools leave I won't be seeing them play anyway.

I can explain how ISU and Oregon St are pretty much the same. Even Wazzu....we have the biggest attendance in the b12 and it isn't close....and we have a basketball program that sells out every time. We aren't marketable because we're in Ames Iowa....it's lucky we are in the Midwest because we would be OSU or Wazzu. To not understand that is lack of reality. Making the Dakotas, the Montanas...that whole region an actual athletic conference is necessary if for no other reason to keep a huge part of the country interested.

I’m not totally sold yet but enough smoke to atleast mention that Odom might be Purdues guy. We shall see if it is in fact true tomorrow . AD had leaked nothing all week but team meeting with the 1 or 2 players left tomorrow at 2pm to announce the coach whomever it is.
Son of a gun Bobinski pulled it off. Happy Paintcrew

According to Sherman's report, Belichick impressed the UNC search committee earlier in the week with his detailed preparation and vision for bringing a championship to Chapel Hill. What was initially expected to be a courtesy call transformed into a "full-fledged candidacy." Cunningham and Carolina brass met with Belichick in person in New York City this week.

Apparently this is becoming more real with each passing day. Apparently Sumrall has faded a bit as folks were starting to have flashbacks to Fedora and we know how that ended up.

Definitely interesting and no matter who we choose half the people will hate the choice and heads will explode across the net which is how the world works these days.

I prefer to see where we are in a variety of areas football wise 2-3 years from now before I determine whether or not whoever gets hired was a good choice or not but that’s just me.

It's very difficult for a basketball school to become a football powerhouse. Resources only go so deep. We obviously get the rare occurrence with Florida and Ohio St but it's extremely rare to spread that out completely. I assume as I've heard all over that it's getting announced tomorrow. Are you hearing differently? I can't see Bill actually signing up to have to recruit kids at this point.

There will be no worse hire than App St going with Dowell Loggains who is totally incompetent. I will be on the under wins for them next season.

I don't for one second believe that Belichick is taking the UNC job unless he's totally obsessed with getting his son the position after a year or two. Just cannot even begin to imagine that guy recruiting unless its at the local high schools looking for his next girlfriend.

Word has it that he wouldn’t be on the recruiting trail but would have a staff handle that aspect. His focus would be on securing $, transfers, changing the culture and actual coaching.

The plot thickens…

Sources: Tulane coach Jon Sumrall has informed Tulane officials that he’s not pursuing any of the open jobs in this cycle. Sumrall’s name had been one of interest for all of the open Power 4 jobs.

I seriously was hoping we'd have a solution here already as I wake up

Blue....I figure you'd have some in with a masked dude from Mexico

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — North Carolina has offered former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick its football coaching job, multiple sources told WRAL.
No announcement was imminent in the coaching search as of early Tuesday afternoon. The UNC Board of Trustees must approve the contract. Several other outlets have reported that an offer has been made.
If UNC gives him the job with the guarantee that his son takes over in 2 years it will be a big mistake.

Apparently all the various stips he or his agent would like included are the hold up so we’ll see what happens
Belichick is using the UNC interest to try to get the Giants to make a move for him. I just don't think the college game is suited to his personality and I think UNC should go in another direction.

Sumrall staying at Tulane is a win. Even with the collapse at the end. Weird Mensah hit the portal…..apparently he’s got a Tommy Cutlets type agent.
Yeah I thought Mensah would stick around once Sumrall decided to stay, but guess I can’t blame him as he is being tabbed the #1 portal prospect at the moment so might as well get the cash while he can.

Yea I was surprised to see him rated that high can’t blame him….Be real curious to see where he ends up….i don’t think the drop off is severe for Tulane, they had/have pieces

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — In a stunning development that has progressed from implausible to an actuality, North Carolina is finalizing a contract to land Bill Belichick as its next football coach, Inside Carolina learned from multiple sources on Wednesday.

Carolina's search process included discussions with Iowa State coach Matt Campbell, Tulane coach Jon Sumrall, Army coach Jeff Monken, NFL coaching veteran Steve Wilks, Georgia defensive coordinator Glenn Schumann and UNC interim coach Freddie Kitchens. Campbell, Sumrall, Monken and Schumann all coached in conference championship games during the weekend.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — North Carolina made its hiring of Bill Belichick official on Wednesday, as the school announced that it has come to terms with the Super Bowl-winning NFL legend to serve as the program's next head coach.

His contract demands were significant, according to sources, including financial commitments for coach salaries, NIL funding and additional staffing needs. His three-year, $30 million deal is the largest in school history.

Bill Belichick is getting the gang back together again.

First up, Michael Lombardi. The NFL personnel executive turned media personality will join Belichick at North Carolina as the General Manager of the program. Most recently, Lombardi worked for VSiN.

He worked for multiple NFL teams from 1984 through 2007. After an initial media stint, he became G.M. of the Browns in 2013.

From 2014 through 2016, he was an assistant to the coaching staff in New England. He then returned to media work.

Unlike Belichick, Lombardi has college experience. He was the recruiting coordinator at UNLV from 1981 through 1984.

Makes a lot of sense that Lombardi was at UNLV when Cunningham was recruited there...big score, but also in '84 when they had to forfeit all of their games due to ineligibility issues of several players. Ah the hay day of UNLV athletics.

Thats a great contract win or lose and honestly a great time for university push back

Saban retired so ain’t none of these fuckers worth more than Bill B in any game that has a football dimensions be damned

Didn’t realize so many coaches already make $10 mil a year and how many are mediocre, so while it is a lot of cash for UNC, it’s all relative…

The expectation is that NIL at UNC will be upwards of $20 million for Belichick’s program. There will be as many as 30 new staffers as well. Massive commitments from Carolina to the new head coach and his program.

I could see a lot of kids wanting to play for Belichick with intent that it will help them move on to the NFL. I also, think his coaching style, from what I have heard, his personality as a coach towards his players, is tough, unyielding and coarse. Some guys can pull that off, but a lot of kids might not be ready for it. Unless Bill has another side of his approach similar to his personality he's put on display working in the media this year. Hope it works out though. It is nice to see people and programs realize success. Wonder if any former Patriot players might join the staff as position coaches or some kind of support roles?

Interested in this board's view on Day at ohio and how the playoffs impact his future. I like Conner O'Gara a lot and respect his opinions. He was on The Next Round earlier today and said Day had to win it all or else he was out. Not just beat Tennessee. Win it all.

That seems a bit much but I think the aftershock, and it's still that, of this latest Michigan debacle has a long and very impactful shelf life.

I think Day sucks but I'd still be surprised if he was fired but maybe they have someone in mind to replace him such as Vrabel.

Who would OSU get? I've heard Vrabel as a longshot but no way he wants the job. Day isn't getting fired or let go unless they lose by 3 TD's or more vs Tennessee. I'm not speaking for OSU in any way, but realistically who can they get who's better? Any coaching change would be a detriment to their cause.

Vrabel is perfect for that job and I really hope he gets it.
