Bill James Rips the BCS, Calls on Fellow Statistical Analysts to Boycott

In the years when the BCS works more or less as well as can be expected, and the top two teams play each other for the national championship, the powers that be in college football like to pat themselves on the back for using computer rankings as part of the BCS formula. "See?" they say, "We're using the computers to make sure we have a fair, objective system."

And then in the years when the BCS doesn't work well, and college football fans are up in arms, the powers that be in college football like to blame the computer rankings in the BCS formula. "The poll voters got it right," they say, "But the computers messed everything up."

And so it goes, year after year, with the powers that be in college football using and misusing statistical analysis to suit their own needs. And now the most influential statistical analyst in the history of sports says he's fed up.

Jeff Jagodzinksi Is <strike>Reportedly Getting</strike> Fired at Boston College Press Conference Today

Jeff Jagodzinksi, the current head coach of Boston College's football team, is, according to the Boston Globe, about to get fired at a press conference today because he chose to interview with the New York Jets, despite the team's insistence that he would lose his job for such an action. Even if they do not actually can Jago, there's still going to be a press conference to "discuss [the] football team and its coach." Update: They did indeed fire Jagodzinski.
Jeff Jagodzinski will be fired as the Boston College football coach this morning in a meeting with athletic director Gene DeFillippo, according to sources close to the program.

After meeting with the New York Jets yesterday in New Jersey regarding their opening for a head coach, Jagodzinski called DeFilippo last night, setting up a face-to-face meeting this morning. They will finalize the details of his termination in the meeting. Jagodzinski has three years remaining on the contract.
This isn't that huge of a surprise, I suppose; you can only have so many publicly scrutinized people playing a game of chicken before someone gets in a wreck.

At the same time though, it was a pretty bold move on Jagodzinksi's part to pull on the interview if he wasn't completely confident he would get the job. That being said, Gene DiFilippo only comes off looking worse if the outcome is termination, so he should probably be able to land on his feet elsewhere soon enough if the Jets gig doesn't come through.

Georgia's Matt Stafford, Knowshon Moreno to Leave Early for NFL Draft

from The FanHouse - NCAAfootball

Georgia quarterback Matt Stafford and running back Knowshon Moreno have scheduled a news conference for this afternoon, and both will announce they're leaving school early for the NFL draft.

Mark Schlabach of ESPN.com reports that Moreno is definitely leaning toward entering the draft, while Stafford has had a harder time making up his mind. But as a prospect viewed by many observers as a franchise quarterback, it's hard to see Stafford returning for another year.

There has been speculation that the Detroit Lions will select Stafford with the first pick in the draft, but being sentenced to a term in the place that Matt Millen's wife calls football prison apparently won't dissuade him from turning pro. Moreno is likely a mid-first-round pick.

For Georgia, the announcement will represent a big loss. But even though Stafford has one more year of college eligibility and Moreno has two more years of eligibility, it's a loss that everyone saw coming. These two are ready to play on Sundays.

Headlinin': Decision day for Georgia stars, Plus! Gratuitous Notre Dame pinin'

We're not saying they're leaving, but ... OK. They're leaving. Matt Stafford and Knowshon Moreno have made up their minds about the NFL, or will make them up by 3 p.m. Eastern, when they've scheduled a press conference to announce whether they plan to stay or go from Georgia. It's not a tandem deal, of course -- one could stay, one could go -- but the duel presser is a tip that they're staying or going together, and the Georgia rumor mill ($) is already bidding adieu to its stars based on an anonymous source and an "e-mail floating around" by a member of Stafford's family. If that's not convincing, just know that certain first-rounders -- in Stafford's case, a certain top-five pick, barring a combine meltdown or something -- don't return to school very often, or call press conferences to announce they're coming back. Stay tuned.
Charlie Weis has no comment, if anyone's wondering. Urban Meyer's getting ready to coach in his second mythical championship game in three years with Florida, but the Chicago Tribune knows what the Gator boss really dreams of at night:
ept_sports_ncaaf_experts-435958045-1231338582.jpg
The Tribune used the opportunity of media day in Miami to mock up that "illustration" for today's edition, which includes nothing more than a few more whacks at the carcass of a horse that died in December 2004, when Meyer spurned the Irish, and was badly rotting when the "dream job" flap (if it even qualified as a "flap") was sparked by a radio interview last month. The Bulls are still in Chicago right? And that one team that does that thing with the sticks and the ice? I mean, Mouthpiece is going strong. I'm sure if the Tribune tried really hard and used its imagination, it could come up with something that didn't spring, you know, purely from its imagination.
The BC hostage crisis, Day Four. By all reports, Jeff Jagodzinski went through with his interview with the Jets Tuesday, which apparently means his fate is sealed when he finally sits down with Boston College athletic director Gene DeFilippo -- if DeFilippo can even get ahold of his coach, who is essentially AWOL from the program. BC message boards openly wonder if Jags is having some sort of breakdown ($).
ept_sports_ncaaf_experts-260000508-1231338565.jpg
There should be some resolution today that replaces Jagodzinski with someone from his staff -- coordinators Steve Logan and Frank Spaziani and o-line/assistant head coach Jack Bicknell all remain in play, with the unfortunately named "Spaz" the new clubhouse leader -- but this looked like it would be settled on Monday, too, and no one's heard a peep from Jagodzinski since he denied contact with the Jets over the weekend. Maybe that's why the storyline is turning from "This AD is crazy" to "What a sneaky rat coach." They're still just waiting for the other shoe to drop.
Gophers join the counterrevolution. Minnesota lost both of its coordinators Tuesday, with offensive coordinator Mike Dunbar resigning and defensive guru Ted Roof signing on to Gene Chizik's staff at Auburn. Roof's departure my "hit harder" for the Gophers, according to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune -- despite allowing 37 points per game during a five-game losing streak to end the season, the defense made a leap under Roof from the unit that finished dead last in the Big Ten in every possible category in 2007 -- but Dunbar's exit is more interesting because it likely signals a shift away from the spread Dunbar helped pioneer under Randy Walker at Northwestern. After finishing last in the Big Ten in rushing, head coach Tim Brewster hired USC and Alabama veteran Tim Davis as offensive line coach and running game coordinator after the regular season, which ESPN's Adam Rittenberg sees as a move back to the more physical offensive identity Minnesota had under Glen Mason.
If so, the Gophers are the first spread adopters in the conference and one of the first in the nation to take the revolution in the opposite direction.
Quickly ... We hardly knew ye, James Casey and Jerraud Powers: The 24-year-old Rice utility man and Auburn cornerback are leaving early for the NFL. ... Mike Balogan will start at middle linebacker Thursday for Oklahoma, but gimpy Mike Box is still likely to play. ... Conference solidarity be damned, Will Muschamp ain't rooting for Oklahoma, and Bob Stoops doesn't even want to hear about Texas' claim to No. 1. ... Less Dick at Arkansas: With Ryan Mallett in the wings at quarterback, Casey Dick's little brother, Nathan, is transferring to Central Arkansas. ... Mark Sanchez hasn't made a decision on his pro future, but new USC offensive coordinator John Morton expects his quarterback to return. ... BYU and Oklahoma will open the 2009 season in the Dallas Cowboys' new space palace. ... New Washington defensive coordinator Nick Holt calls the Huskies "a sleeping giant." ... Matt Simms leaving U of L

from Card Chronicle by Mike Rutherford
This according to a Rick Bozich blog on the C-J website.
Quarterback Matt Simms is leaving the University of Louisville football program. Simms, a redshirt sophomore quarterback, informed U of L coach Steve Kragthorpe of his decision this morning, U of L football sports information director Rocco Gasparro said.

No word on where Simms is headed. His mother arrived from New Jersey to help him pack his belongings and head home today.

Some expected Simms to replace Hunter Cantwell as the Cards' starting quarterback next season. After red-shirting last season, Simms played in only one game last season, completing 4 of 10 passes for 39 yards and one interception against Pittsburgh.
It's hard to call any news coming out of the football program surprising at this point, but Simms leaving does seem a bit odd after all of the "Matt has the advantage" and "Matt loves competition" remarks Kragthorpe made during his end of the season press conference. I thought from the beginning that passing on Mitch Mustain in order to keep Simms happy and committed was the first mistake Kragthorpe made here, and nothing that has happened since then has made me waver the least bit from that opinion.
I give this news a big, heartfelt "meh."

We Hardly Knew Ye: 95.5 percent of Georgia's offense

from Dr. Saturday - NCAAF - Yahoo! Sports by Matt Hinton
ept_sports_ncaaf_experts-633061447-1231360493.jpg
No surprises from Athens, where Matt Stafford and Knowshon Moreno are both bailing for bucks after two stellar yet not quite fully-cooked seasons at Georgia. They go down as one of the most lethal run-pass duos of the decade, and if only the Bulldogs had made Moreno the feature back before his explosion against Florida in 2007, or played a little defense this year, they might have captured at least a division title for the road.
ept_sports_ncaaf_experts-780457044-1231360509.jpg
With his size, Stafford has had "No. 1 pick" written all over him from the day he showed up in one of those high school passing camps and left vapor trails behind the ball. I'm not sure he completely fulfilled his potential as a college passer, especially while toiling in the very long shadow of Tim Tebow, but he was dramatically better in every phase of the game as a junior and has no reason to pass on universal projections that he'll be the first quarterback -- and maybe the first player -- off the board in April. He was more mobile this year, more accurate and didn't lose anything from the searing deep ball that got him where he is in the first place. He struggled against Alabama and Florida, yes, but still: Nobody throws a longer, tighter, prettier ball than Matt Stafford.
Taken with Moreno, a tightly-wound, high-flying ball of such perpetual energy that he frequently got up and kept running a few steps after he was tackled, Georgia loses not only two of the premiere skill players in the draft but 95.5 percent of their total yards in 2008, along with half the touchdowns. Florida was already going to be a favorite in 2009; now Georgia enters wholesale rebuilding mode offensively, pending a Knowshon-like breakout by hyped backup Caleb King. Unless athletic, third-year quarterback Logan Gray is a revelation, things could be dire.
UPDATE, 4:35 p.m. ET: Add to today's exodus Maryland receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey, one of the very, very few elite big-play guys in the ACC and a kind of tragic figure at times on a Terp offense that struggled to get him the ball on a consistent basis. Heyward-Bey only had one 100-yard receiving game each of the last two seasons, in the upsets over Georgia Tech in 2007 and over Wake Forest this year, and was snubbed by the all-conference team, but his speed will get him some late first round buzz. With a quarterback, he could be a really frightening player.

Report: Sam Bradford Will Enter the NFL Draft Following the BCS Championship

Sam Bradford has racked up about every award possible in his sophomore season as Oklahoma Sooners quarterback. And on Thursday night, he'll go up against Florida and Tim Tebow for the national championship. If the Sooners win (or even lose, actually) there's a pretty good chance he'll enter the NFL draft.

National Football Post is claiming that there's no real "chance" about it though, reporting today that Bradford is as good as gone.
Sources close to the National Football Post have told us that Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford, barring an injury in Thursday night's BCS National Championship game against Florida, will declare for the NFL Draft. The 6-foot-4, 218-pound sophomore and Heisman Trophy winner threw for 4,464 yards and 48 touchdowns with only 6 interceptions in leading the Sooners to the Big 12 championship and a 12-1 record.
Now, not to knock NFP here, but "sources close to [them] ..." is a touch vague. For instance, examine the following claim: "Sources close to Will Brinson have told him that Stephen Curry will start against Duke tonight."

In case you don't see what I'm getting at: Curry is really good. He is playing Duke. He is very, very likely to start. So, there are a string of facts that lead to a conclusion that seems almost inevitable. Much like Bradford taking his won't-ever-be-higher draft stock and parlaying it into millions and millions of dollars.
