cavs
First, it was Richard Hamilton.
Now, he's been asked to slow down Joe Johnson.
No matter whom they put before him, though, Cavaliers guard Delonte West will make their lives miserable on the defensive end.
He's wiry strong, has an incredible wing span and has quick hands and feet. It adds up to a 6-foot-3, 180-pound dynamo who is absolutely fearless.
"He's a solid player who doesn't get a lot of credit for what he does," Cavs forward LeBron James said. "He's one of the most complete players we have on our team. These guys have a lot of size on (him). He tries to contain them as much as possible."
Some were calling West an unsung hero of the team.
"In my opinion, he's one of the best (defenders) in the league," Cavs guard Mo Williams said. "He guards the best players on every team. He just harasses the player that he is guarding.
"I think he is an unsung hero. If he doesn't play well and defend well, we struggle. He's a very smart, intelligent basketball player."
If one doesn't buy into West's prowess, just ask Hawks guard Joe Johnson. He was limited to just 11 points in Game 1. He made just 5-of-10 attempts. Johnson averaged a team-high 21.4 points during the regular season.
"I told him, 'You had Rip Hamilton in the first series and you have Joe Johnson now,'" coach Mike Brown said. "'Do what you do.' He's a terrific defender. He's a guy that, hopefully, sooner or later starts to get some recognition for it around the league. He has tough assignments and he takes those on time after time after time."
Brown surprised a few observers when he paired West and Williams in the starting lineup. West is not a prototypical shooting guard. West is undersized when compared to other shooting guards. Johnson, for instance, is 6-7, 240.
CAVALIERS 105, HAWKS 85: The Cavs outclassed the Hawks in Game 2, 105-85, before a sold-out crowd at Quicken Loans Arena. Forward LeBron James finished with a game-high 27 points, five assists and four steals.
Veteran Wally Szczerbiak came off the bench to score 17 points. He made 7-of-9 shots from the field and had a slam dunk on a fast break.
"(Thursday night) it was Wally's turn," James said. "Normally, I would have dunked it. But when you have Wally running the floor with you, you have to give it to him."
The Cavs' defense was suffocating once again. They scraped and clawed and were dominant on the boards, blocked shots, got steals and swarmed all over the hapless Hawks, who shot just 34.9 percent from the field.
NOTES, QUOTES
—G Delonte West was poked in the right eye by Hawks center Zaza Pachulia with 5:23 remaining in the third period and didn't return. He ended with 14 points, three rebounds and two assists. Pachulia is 2-for-2 in this series. He broke swingman Sasha Pavlovic's nose in Game 1 with an elbow. "He's OK," LeBron James said. "He got poked in the eye last year in the playoffs. He'll be ready for Game 3."
—The Cavs' 27-point decision in Game 1 matched the largest margin of victory in the opening game of a conference semifinal series in the last nine years. The Cavs lost Game 1 to Detroit, 113-86, in 2006.
—The Cavs have won each of their first six playoff games by 10 or more points, tying the NBA postseason record. The 2004 Indiana Pacers have the record.
QUOTE TO NOTE: "(I was) just taking pride on that side of the court. (I) want to guard the best players. When you go against those guys in the summer with the Olympic team, that definitely helped. I'm just as locked in on that end as I am on offense." — Cavs F LeBron James, on earning first-team All-Defense honors.

PLAYER NOTES:
—F LeBron James was named to the All-Defensive first-team on Wednesday. James was joined on the first team by Orlando center Dwight Howard — the Defensive Player of the Year — Boston forward Kevin Garnett, Los Angeles Lakers guard Kobe Bryant and New Orleans guard Chris Paul. The team was picked by the league's 30 head coaches. "I thank the coaches who saw that I picked up my game on that end," James said. "It's humbling." James joins forward Larry Nance in 1988-89 as the only players in franchise history to be voted to the first team. He was also just the fifth Cavs player to make the all-defensive team, and the first since the late Bobby Phills in 1995-96.
—It's just G-F Sasha Pavlovic's luck. He's been rarely used thus far in the playoffs. However, he responded with some rare playing time in Game 1 with seven points, three rebounds and a steal. However, he ran into an elbow from Hawks C Zaza Pachulia in the fourth quarter and broke his nose. He was fitted with a protective mask to wear in Game 2. "That seems to be Sasha's M.O. over the last couple years," coach Mike Brown said. "He's starts to get going and he comes up with a leg injury or an ankle injury. The thing I like about him, though, is that he always seems to bounce back from things. I'm sure he will from this." Pavlovic had four points and three rebounds in 17 minutes in Game 2.
—F LeBron James is averaging 31.5 points, 9.7 rebounds, 6.3 assists and 2.3 steals in the series.
—G-F Wally Szczerbiak scored a postseason-high 17 points against Atlanta in Game 3. He even had a big dunk on a fast break.
