How is he not in Cooperstown? MLB didn't have a PED testing system in place. Was he just supposed to watch Brady Anderson and Luis Gonzalez hit more HRs than him?

It was MLB that had a flawed system. They weren't protecting the great players and almost forced them to cheat... The great players of that era got fucked.

Barry and Roger should be in for sure. Both of them were pretty much HOF locks before either of them starting using PEDs. It's an embarrassment for baseball if these 2, at the very least, aren't in the HOF. Bonds is like one of the top 5 or 10 players of all time, if he's not in your HOF, regardless of his PED usage later in his career, you should close the doors to the HOF.

Karl, who cares if he used PEDs? He was a HOFer before he started using, easily the best player in his generation...a complete 5 tool player who won multiple MVPs. There was probably about 70-80% of MLB using some type of PEDs when a. there was no drug policy or testing and b. the league was basically encouraging the behavior by looking the other way, promoting their stars as Big League Chew look-a-likes in commercials in that era, and trying to get fans back in any way possible after the 1994 lockout.

People sometimes ask, “How am I supposed to explain to my kid that Barry Bonds made the Hall of Fame even though he took steroids?” But that actually takes, like, 20 seconds: “The Hall of Fame honors great players, son, not great men. Barry Bonds might have been a jerk, and he was willing to break the law to be better at baseball. But man, could that guy hit.”

Does everyone forget how many guys took steroids and stunk? More than half of the guys listed in the infamous Mitchell Report were total scrubs. Even if some of the guys you’re trying to keep out now did use PEDs, they used them to compete and succeed against a bunch of other guys who were also taking PEDs because they played at a time when no one did anything to stop them.

All 762 of Barry Bonds’ home runs still count in the box scores, just as we still celebrate the teams that won championships behind players who have since admitted to using PEDs.

What happened happened. Until 2003, Major League Baseball and its teams did nothing to prevent players from taking anabolic steroids to enhance their performances, and so many players did. It’s unfortunate, but it really shouldn’t diminish the on-field accomplishments of that era so long as they’re contextualized.

Including a character clause in the voting criteria puts many baseball writers in the impossible position of retroactively policing men they never knew for taking actions no one tried to stop. It’s time to take morality out of the picture and put great baseball players in the Hall of Fame.

Absolutely. Anyone who says he's not one of the top 5 (or I'll even say 10 just to be safe) players of all time is just hating on the guy and doesn't like him. The dude was a complete, 5 tool player....and when he got older and lost the speed and got knicked up, he turned to PEDs and just starting mashing the fucking ball. You could either walk him, or there was a good chance he was hitting a bomb...it was simply unreal.

They always said, throughout his career, that he could have easily hit 40-50 HRs a year, but didn't want to do that and would rather have done what he did which was hit for average, doubles, some HRs, take walks and steal bases. There were a few articles on him back in the day where guys followed him around for a few days and he literally would hit a HR in batting practice at will.

ARod, Manny, Clemens, Pedro.... They're all close to being the best player I've seen but Bonds takes the cake. Who the hell could be sure that Pedro didn't use any PEDs? I've always said the same thing, that most players in that era were using something. It was probably as high as 70-80% of players.

Guys like Griffey get a pass for some reason, but if you really look at it closely, the injuries he suffered later in his career are 100% consistent with someone who was using PEDs. He had muscles that ripped off of the bone, and got "freak" injuries chasing down balls in the outfield. I'm not saying it's certain he used PEDs, but there's no reason he should just get a pass when his injuries were consistent with those that one would suffer if taking PEDs.

Karl, who cares if he used PEDs? He was a HOFer before he started using, easily the best player in his generation...a complete 5 tool player who won multiple MVPs. There was probably about 70-80% of MLB using some type of PEDs when a. there was no drug policy or testing and b. the league was basically encouraging the behavior by looking the other way, promoting their stars as Big League Chew look-a-likes in commercials in that era, and trying to get fans back in any way possible after the 1994 lockout.

He started using because he saw MacGuire and Sosa hitting those bombs and suddenly becoming more famous than he had been in his entire career even though he was ten times the player of either of them. Pretty simple psychology really, he couldn't beat them so he joined them (then he obliterated them).

There's cheating, and there's cheating. Doctoring the ball or even the bat, stealing signs, stalling for a downpour when your five runs down in the bottom of the fifth … baseball fans love that. If I were a voter, I'd be in that camp. I wish the voters didn't care about All-Star game appearances, or wins by a pitcher, but they do. You don't like how they care about steroids. The problem with this thinking is how do you distinguish who used and didn't? As I've pointed out before, Griffey may very well have been using...his injuries were consistent with steroid users injuries. Would you not vote for him? If you would, how could you when it's possible he used? Do you just not vote for anyone who played in that era since it's probably that most of the players were using something?
