2014 Fantasy RB Rankings (Tiers)

Move ray up a bit? Looked good. Lost weight. Says he's quicker. Oline improved

Tough to rank them right now. I have both around the same spot late 20's, around RB30. Unless one becomes the main guy, I can see Pierce getting goal line work and a true RBBC scenario. If Pierce falls miserably in the first 2 games, though, Rice could become the lead back. I'd draft Rice ahead of Pierce for that reason. Round 6-7 looks ok for Rice.

Texans cut Brown and Dennis Johnson. I assume Brown is hurt.

I was high on rookie, Blue, and I'm even higher now. Some folks touting Grimes, as well. Something worth monitoring. I highly doubt Foster plays a full season, maybe not even a half of season.

How often do you update your Tier list, Gorg? I see last edit was Aug. 4. Great stuff. Thanks.

I'm starting to wonder if Ball is going to fall into the same category as CJ Spiller from last season.

There was no legit reason for people to think that Fred Jackson was gonna get so many fewer touches when he got healthy again...he was effective when he was on the field...

I think a lot of things could change around in Denver, I don't think Ball has to see the touches that everyone's predicting, not only that...but he still hasn't impressed me outside of one or two decent showings. Tough to put him in my top 20...as of now I have him outside looking in

except denver doesn't have a veteran to rely on. CJ anderson (concussion) and ronnie hillman. those are the only RBs on their roster.

Bucs rookie RB Charles Sims will miss 12-14 weeks after undergoing surgery on his right ankle.

This is huge news in my opinion. I have to do some serious examination of Doug Martin now. Sims got rave reviews from scouts and TB used a high pick on him. I expected Sims to slowly eat into Martin's workload, especially in the passing game. Guys like Rainey and James do not scare me much at all. Lovie likes using a multi-back system, but Martin should open the season up as the clear lead back. As long as he doesn't falter, it will be difficult for Sims to get incorporated into the offense (assuming he is at least designated for early season IR and won't return until at least week 7).

I don't see why Martin won't get something like 230 carries and 25-30 receptions. (He had 49 receptions as a rookie.) So even conservatively projected 230*3.7 + 25*8. He's close to 1100 total yards.

That really fucking sucks since I drafted him in my 14 teamer

That's why I don't understand why anyone has their fantasy drafts so early. Having them before the 3rd preseason game is just asking for trouble, especially the way guys get injured nowadays in the NFL. I'm not faulting you at all, it's simply the league you're in, but why is the draft so early?

Agree 100%, I won't do a league that drafts before the 3rd preseason game.

We do it live and 2 of the guys (one hosts every year) have babies due in the next 2 weeks. Another guy gets married next weekend. Another guy is moving to happy valley next week.

So yeah, not our choice really. Everyone was kinda ill about it. Hopefully I'll dodge the big one. Really just one more round of games for starters

It's been a full 2 weeks since I've updated the RB rankings. There's a recent update posted above. I've made significant changes to the tiers. I'll post thoughts tonight.

Anyone see any discrepancies?

I bumped up Martin and may continue to bump him. No competition for carries there. Sims was the biggest threat and he might not play at all this year. Rainey is merely a change of pass back who could play on some 3rd downs, but remember Martin does have hands so if Rainey can't block, Martin is more than adequate on 3rd downs.

Bumped up Stacy and may continue bumping him. That team will run a lot. Mason having pass pro problems, not sure if he will have a big role in his rookie year.

Bumped down Lev Bell. I've been against him from the get go. He's just not a good talent and more of a 3rd round RB. I've had him in the 3rd rd from day 1.

I created a new Tier 4 of borderline RB 2/RB 3 guys. Spiller won't be on any of my teams. FJax clearly still has a role there. I'm ok with Gore, maybe in rd 5 or 6, but he'll probably go higher. The reason I like Gore is that, if he does break down, you can still draft Hyde and get RB1 production. I bumped Pierce a few good spots ahead of Rice. I like drafted Pierce if you implore a strategy of waiting on RB because Pierce will at least be a workhorse for the first 2 weeks. Then by week 3, you should have a better idea of how the mid-round RBs are producing.

Dunbar has a huge leap and I'm targetting him in all drafts. Linehan has a history of using 2 backs. Dunbar should be a quality PPR RB. And if Murray gets hurt (likely), then Dubar could produce low-end RB1 numbers.

Damn man. I agree with everything you've said there. I don't really like Martin all that much bc his line is gonna suck but he definitely deserves a bump up with Sims and James injuries.

Dunbar should have a bunch of rec yards and catches

Little Puff puff pass in PITT

Yep. Bell and Blount were both charged with marijuana possession. I'm sure they will be disciplined by the NFL, but if anything, it may allow you to get Bell a round or two later now. They shouldn't be suspended for more than a game or two though, so it may not affect his ADP much at all. So stupid too, they had 20 grams of pot and it's a misdemeanor offense that doesn't even result in an arrest...it's simply an appearance ticket.

Gorg, How long can we wait to get dunbar in PPR?

I draft Sunday. Really want to thank Gorg and everyone else who contributed to these preseason threads. I barely read the mag I bought. Don't need it with the info here.

Can't wait for the start/sit threads.

Thanks. Rd 11 seems good for him. But it will really depend on a few things. If the Murray owner is smart, he will probably look to hand cuff Dunbar, so you need to be aware of that. It also depends how he looks on Sunday. Dallas has purposely held him out all pre-season, so there's no hype on him. If he looks good Sunday, his stock will rise. Since you draft Sunday, you probably won't need to worry about that.

I think once you get to rd 8, ADP really doesn't matter much. If you've filled all your starters (and there's still QBs available), I have no problem with taking these sleeper picks a few rounds earlier if you really like them.

i took him 9th of a 14 teamer, but i wanted him and i was picking right in front of the murray owner. i just looked him in the eye and said dunbar and i could see him shiver a bit even though he was trying to play it off hah

Lev Bell and Blount split carries tonight. I'd avoid Bell, even if he drops to the 3rd. Ellington is the much better option...no competition.

Timely words by Lovie, calling Martin his "bellcow." Lots of fantasy drafts going on this weekend. Martin is a rock solid 3rd pick, especially if you go WR-WR. I've bumped him to the top of Tier 3, ahead of Gerhart.

Im watching Alfred Blue play now. This guy is a NFL-caliber starter. I like him over Grimes if/when Foster gets hurt. However, the Texans will likely split carriers between Blue and Grimes until Blue shows he's the better runner. Key will be how Blue can protect in the pass game.

Thoughts on J Stewart...? Do you still feel the same about him? Non-ppr, who would you keep on roster - Stewart or Woodhead?

Woodhead gets a huge bump down in non-ppr. I'm ok w/ Stewart somewhere in rd 12 or 13 as a total flier. I'd rather take a high-upside rookie RB or young RB.

Move dougie up with one of the best rub blocking guards in Mankins?

Maybe. I have another home draft on Sunday, so I'm going to update all rankings on Friday. I haven't had much time to follow a lot of the news this week. Gotta catch up.

Gotta say I am shocked at the trade. We never see player-for-player trades like this in the NFL. Mankins can still play at a high level. He's a big upgrade to that O-line and a team that wants to run. The Pats get an underrated player in Wright, but I'm not sure why they would want to fuck up Brady's line, especially as he enters the twilight of his career.

One more home draft for me this weekend. It's another PPR league, but it's a keeper league so it skews things a bit. I'm keeping Graham and probably drafting Calvin Johnson in rd 1, so that combo should be fun to watch all year.

These RB tiers are pretty final. The biggest jump is Gio down a tier, which means he won't be on any of my teams because he's going in rd 2. I'm standing by my projections posted earlier in this thread, but I realize the reception total is on the high end. If he only catches, say 50 balls, he's more of a solid RB2 than a RB1 in PPR.

I thought about bumping Doug Martin to Tier 2, but the O-line is still suspect. He's a 3rd rd pick for me, not a 2nd.

Ingram and Tate's stocks are on the rise. Ingram is running with force this preseason. He should post RB2/RB3 production to start the year, but his running style may get him hurt. Tate has outplayed West all preseason. Tate is a strong RB2, but again he'll likely be hurt at some point.

Moreno is back, which means RBBC in Miami. Miller is no longer on my radar.

Overall, not too many changes which is good. No reason to overreact to preseason. My strategy is still the same: Unless I get a top 3 pick, I'll pass on RBs until Rd 3 and target Ellington. If he's gone, I'm ok settling for Martin as my RB1.

Thanks for doing these gorg. Great threads.

In ppr I would not draft a rb before round 4-5. I'd rather go wr wr wr than take non top 3 rbs.

Right. My tiers say Ellington is a rd 3 pick for me. But then once you get to Tier 3, you can get those guys later. I'm ok going something like Dem Thomas, Jordy, and Brown/J Thomas in the first 3 rounds then coming back with someone like Bell or Gerhart in rd 4 as a "shaky" but serviceable RB1.

Guys like Gio, L Bell, Lynch, Foster, Martin, Stacy....All being overdrafted in rd 2. You can't pass up a WR for those guys in any format.

in CTG4 i went Calvin, Jeffrey Cobb after taking manning rivers (2 QB - PPC) and ended up with Joique and Jennings as my RBs with ray and cj2k to back up. i'd go WR WR WR again and again in PPR

So I added Hill and dropped Charles Clay TE of Miami, I already have Zach Ertz. So I should be ok at the TE position

Definitely add hill. We all knew bjge was done but this clears it up for the folks not as into it and makes the guy reject my trade offer for hill I submitted last night heh
