*****2013 Recruting Thread*****

Every recruiting cycle, there are programs that surprise. These programs didn’t exactly set the world on fire on the field, but the future is bright given the amount of projected talent they are adding to their roster. The Class of 2013 is no different.

Top247 lineman Darius Latham is the highest-ranked prospect in Indiana's 2013 class.

Here’s a look at five surprise classes to date in this cycle.

[h=2]Indiana[/h]The key to building a successful program in college football, no matter how thin the in-state talent base is, is to sign the best players from your state when they are present. That’s what makes this Hoosiers class, which ranks No. 43 nationally according to 247Sports, impressive. Two-way lineman Darius Latham (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central), safety Antonio Allen (Indianapolis, Ind./Ben Davis) and defensive end David Kenney (Indianapolis, Ind./Pike) are three of the top 10 in-state prospects for the 2013 cycle. Sleepers like running back Myles Graham (Hollywood, Fla./Chaminade-Madonna) and cornerback Noel Padmore (Flowery Branch, Ga.) round out a nice class for Indiana.

[h=2]Ole Miss[/h]Even with the current list of commits, the Rebels already stand to add significant talent to their roster. It’s quite a resourceful class, which is the key to recruiting at an in-state Mississippi program. You have to work the junior colleges, take late enroll prospects and get qualified (academically) talent any way you can. Ole Miss will get Nickolas Brassell back from East Mississippi Community College, they have former LSU signee and jumbo athlete Jeremy Liggins (Northwest Mississippi C.C.) committed and swiped four-star defensive tackle Jarran Reed (East Mississippi C.C.) from North Carolina. Those are just the instant impact prospects that are currently committed. Ole Miss is in the ball game, if not the leader for the nation’s top high school prospect, defensive end Robert Nkemdiche (Loganville, Ga./Grayson), 247Composite five-star receiver Laqun Treadwell (Crete, Ill./Crete-Monee) and four-star defensive end Elijah Daniel (Avon, Ind.), among others. Head coach Hugh Freeze and staff did a tremendous job this year leading the Rebels to a 6-6 record and a bowl berth (with a three-point loss to Texas A&M and a six-point loss at LSU) and adding this type of talent infusion makes the future bright in Oxford.

[h=2]Penn State[/h]
7_700243.jpg
Offensive tackle Andrew Nelson recently moved into the Class of 2013 Top247. He is committed to Penn State.

It probably should not still be a surprise, but with crippling NCAA sanctions and the stain of a scandal still lingering, Penn State head coach Bill O’Brien and staff have been able to not only have success recruiting, but have excelled. The Nittany Lions currently have the nation’s No. 16 class, led by five-star quarterback Christian Hackenberg (Fork Union, Va./Fork Union Military). Tight end Adam Breneman (Camp Hill, Pa./Cedar Cliff) is the nation’s No. 2 tight end prospect and has future All-Big Ten potential. Offensive lineman Andrew Nelson (Hershey, Pa.) is a senior riser that recently moved into the Top247 and Penn State was able to reach into Virginia and snag wide receiver DaeSean Hamilton (Stafford, Va./Mountain View) from in-state Virginia Tech. Even if the class ends up being just the 18 who are currently committed, this recruiting cycle has been a surprising success for O’Brien and company.

[h=2]Tulane[/h]The Green Wave, who recently joined the Big East (we know that is now precarious) currently has the nation’s No. 65 overall class, but they’ve secured commitments from a number of solid prospects. Offensive tackle Kenneth Santa Marina (New Orleans, La./McDonough 35) is a massive offensive line prospect that had attention from a number of Southeastern Conference schools during the cycle. Defensive end Corey Smith (New Orleans, La./O. Perry Walker) is a 6-foot-7, 250-pound defensive end with an outstanding frame that has big-time potential. Earlier this week, the Green Wave landed a commitment from former Washington quarterback Nick Montana, the son of Hall of Famer Joe Montana. Given the relative lack of on-field success in New Orleans, the fact that the Tulane head coach Curtis Johnson and his staff are able to recruit at this level comes as a surprise and will build a solid foundation for the future, regardless of what conference the Green Wave plays in.

[h=2]Washington[/h]The Huskies are no strangers to recruiting at a high level under Steve Sarkisian, but they currently have the nation’s No. 14 class (No. 2 in the Pac-12) and have some of the top prospects on the West Coast this recruiting cycle committed. Simply put, this class could be a program booster. Four-star receiver Demorea Stringfellow (Moreno Valley, Calif./Rancho Verde) is a 6-foot-3, 190-pound big-play threat that’s a potential game-changer as is fellow four-star receiver Darrell Daniels (Oakley, Calif./Freedom). Quarterback Troy Williams (Harbor City, Calif./Narbonne) has one of the strongest arms in the country and a trio of future defensive linemen- ends Marcus Farria (Peoria, Ariz./Centennial) and Daeshon Hall (Lancaster, Texas) and future tackle Elijah Qualls (Petaluma, Calif./Casa Grande)- make for one of the better defensive line classes in the country.

As of now A&M has landed JUCO LB Tommy Harris.

Harris was telling the SCar coaches he was committed as of 7pm tonight and the 247 Gamecock site was going to be at his announcement tomorrow.

This one hurts, JUCO Early Enrolle at a position of major need.

Brad Henson, offensive guard, Toms River, Nj, flips from UVa to UNC. Big need for UNC. 23rd rated player at his position. Not shabby.

Looks like SCar found a school no one else in NC wants to visit. Havelock, NC. We've offered about 5 kids from the school including 2 from this class that are commits.

It is the math requirement that is keeping a ton of these kids from the SEC.

Don't think we ever truly considered Combs since we were targeting Martrell Spaight instead. Unfortunately Arkansas just offered Spaight, and he is a HUGE 'Hogs fan, so we may lose him. However he would have to take the math class to qualify there.

And we lost him to Arkansas. Fuck Bielema

The two guys you got to commit are nothing special. Maybe the other three will be?

UNC coaches are actively pursuing both.

Derrell Scott is likely the best RB in state for 2014 and one of the best in the South East.

Pharoh Cooper just went wild in the Shrine Bowl, the same game Logan was in.

Because of Romar Morris, recruits TJ Logan and forgot his name, we do not need Scott at the moment if for no other reason we are good to go at RB. I highly doubt they are breathing down either of these guys backs. Coop needs to eat some carbs if he's gonna play D1 football in the trenches.

he is a good recruiter. many consider him to be UGA's "bagman"

He was literally Auburn's bagman back in the early 90's:

Interview with Terry Bowden April 24, 2001, at his Loachapoka ranch.
Also present was Paul Davis. After our interview, Bowden was expecting a visit from Dr. Muse that same day at his ranch. Former Auburn University football coach Terry Bowden says the program he inherited in 1993 included an elaborate system of paying star high school players up to $15,000 to sign with Auburn and $600 per month while on the team.
In a lengthy interview from the ranch he still owns in Loachapoka, Bowden alleged that the “pay-for-play” system was orchestrated by powerful AU Board of Trustees member Bobby Lowder and carried out by former assistant coach Wayne Hall.
Bowden said the corruption extended to former head coach Pat Dye, and included $30,000 to Atlanta attorneys for Gene Jelks in order to sustain the former University of Alabama player while he leveled charges of wrongdoing in the Crimson Tide program.
Bowden said he learned of the major NCAA infractions within days of being named Auburn ’s head coach, but kept quiet while trying to clean up the program from within.” I broke the rules,” Bowden said. “I told Wayne Hall to pay it off to the players we already had and it will never happen again.
I was hiding a dirty secret.” Bowden said the payment of players can be traced to Lowder, who Bowden said is the unquestioned leader of the AU athletic department.” Nothing was done without Lowder knowing.” Wayne Hall and Pat Dye paid $30,000 for lawyers in Atlanta to keep Gene Jelks talking.
This came from the money that had been used to pay Auburn players. In 1991 when I was at Samford, Wayne Hall called to ask about a job for Katherine Lowder at Samford. Bobby Lowder then called and he said he would contribute money to Samford equal to Katherine’s salary as long as we didn’t tell her where the money came from. Katherine and my wife became good friends.
Then the Eric Ramsey thing hit. One day Katherine sticks her head in my office door and says, “Dye is leaving and my dad wants you to be coach at Auburn .” Dye resigned a week later. Lowder made him resign because Lowder was sure Auburn was going to get the death penalty if he didn’t resign.
I met with Lowder, Mike McCarter and Ruel Russell at Ruel’s office in Birmingham . They asked me all the questions, and I thought it was a job interview. Then they said, we need to get you an interview. They got John Montgomery Sr. to officially recommend me to be interviewed. The night before the interview, Lowder told me “here’s how the interview will go.”
This was three hours on the phone like a lawyer prepping his client. There were six candidates – Larry Smith, Mack Brown, Dick Sheridan, Pat Sullivan, Wayne Hall and me. Everyone agreed that whoever the coach was going to be, the decision had to be unanimous. I think Lowder wanted Wayne Hall, but he knew he couldn’t get him approved. I was the backup.
I was the last to interview, then the committee immediately took a vote that day. Somebody was opposed to every candidate until they voted on me last. That’s how I got the job. Lowder said he wanted me to hire Wayne Hall as an assistant.
Tommy (Bowden, Terry’s brother and a member of the Pat Dye staff) told me that if you wanted anything done you gotta go through Hall. My second day on the job (athletic director Mike) Lude said “you can’t hire Hall.” But then I understand Lowder called and said that if I couldn’t hire Hall we will find a new president.
So I hired Wayne Hall. One week on the job, Hall came in with a ledger of players who have been paid, who paid the money, how much money and when it was paid. He said we’ve still got 9-12 players that we’re paying $600 per month.
We paid then $12,000-$15,000 to sign. We sign about four every year that we pay.(Former assistant coach Rodney) Garner paid most of the players. He was paid when he was a player at Auburn.(Stacey) Danley is the assistant compliance guy, and he was paid when he was a player. I broke the rules. I said pay it off, and it will never happen again.
Hall said “OK, but you will change your mind.” Katherine came to Auburn as my assistant, but she worked for Colonial. We were real close. I told Lowder “We have cash all over.” Lowder said “I told Wayne not to collect more than we had to have to pay the players.” Wayne had a safe in his house wherehe kept the money. Within two weeks of me being hired they told me about paying Jelks.
Nothing was done without Lowder knowing. I will go under oath and say that Lowder looked me in the eyes and said, “I didn’t want Wayne to collect more money than we needed to pay the players.” I was hiding a dirty secret. We were paying (star running back and current Washington Redskin) Steve Davis and his cousin the fullback.
It took about two years to get it all cleaned up. Most the guys we were paying weren’t any good and weren’t helping us win games. Steve Davis was the exception.
Here is how it works, fifty to 60 men give $5,000 per year. Wayne would collect it. These are all good men. They didn’t ask questions. The coach tells them that everybody cheats so we have to. My first two years we went 11-0 and 9-0-1.
My third year, (assistants Jimbo) Fisher and (Rick) Trickett said, “Hall is on the phone a lot with Lowder.” I thought he was going back to cheating. I told Hall that when the season was over he needed to move on.
I told Garner that I was taking him off coaching for a year. That was the beginning of the end for me. Jimmy Rane was in on all of this. He is high maintenance. Three current Board of Trustees members gave cash to players – Rane, Spina and McWhorter.
Jimmy is a wannabe, a jock sniffer, a loose cannon. He wants to be involved in everything. After I fired Wayne , (athletic director David) Housel came on. I don’t dislike David, but David would get his feelings hurt if I called Lowder.
I told David what Wayne was doing. Lowder said (of Housel) “He’s not a good AD, but he’s my AD.” David Dideon compliance guy, Jay Jacobs parking passes, Tim Jackson tickets. All are GAF members. Gerald Leschuck was keeping Lowder informed.
By my last year I’m having my house checked for bugs. Danny Rane (son of Jimmy Rane and a walk-on Auburn player) was giving our practice tapes to Mississippi State , our opponent. Tommy Tuberville had been promised the job if we lost to Alabama in the game when we kicked the field goal here to win.
After that season, I thought about taking the University of Texas job, but (Governor Fob) James was getting rid of Lowder. Then Lowder stayed on the Board and I was stuck. I thought then that I needed to win one more year and get out.
When I got here Lowder said don’t talk to Muse, he’s weak and his wife is a n—-r lover. Lowder told me John Denson was trying to kill him. The last week I was coach: Monday – The Huntsville Tmes runs a story that says an undisclosed sources says that Bowden has lost the confidence of the Board of Trustees and he must win four of the last five games to keep his job.
I lied to my staff and told them that I had talked to Lowder, the story was not true and everything was OK. I was trying to keep up morale. Tuesday – (Defensive coordinator Bill) Oliver brings a hidden tape recorder into our coaches meeting. I believe this was because Lowder wanted to have proof that I told a lie about talking to him the day before. Wednesday – I had a 7 a.m. meeting with Housel.
He asked if I had seen the article in the Huntsville Times. He said he had talked to Lowder, and Lowder wanted me to know that he was the undisclosed source.
He said he also wants you to know that he doesn’t care if you win five of your next six, you’re out. David said the only way I would keep my job was if Fob James wins (the governor’s race). Thursday – I brought in my lawyer, Ricky Davis, and said to David that I wanted to resign.
He called Lowder while we were in his office and we worked out a settlement. Muse didn’t even know. They were using Oliver. They were never going to hire him. When I resigned it shocked them.

And Bama snagged a 5-star WR from Pennsylvania today, Robert Foster. That far from home, I won't count him until he's on campus, but whatever QB is #1 in the 2014 class has to be intrigued to be throwing to the WR Bama has amassed

This SEC diehard is so sick of Bama fan's ego trips...2008 wasn't too long ago.

UPDATE on a DE committed elsewhere
by Zach Abolverdi » Fri Dec 21, 2012 9:09 pm

With 25 commits on board, Florida has a full class and most of its needs have been fulfilled. But if there's one position that could use another prospect, it's defensive end.

UF is scheduled to host Elijah Daniel, Auburn commit Tashawn Bower and USC commit Jason Hatcher on official visits next month. But there's another recruit back in the mix for the Gators — DeMarcus Walker.

The Alabama commit is applying at Florida for early enrollment and may be on the verge of flipping to UF.
Jeremy Pruitt leaving Tuscaloosa for Tallahassee has been a big blow for Walker, who was personally recruited by him. Distance is also beginning to weigh heavily on his mind.

Walker will begin classes in two weeks, so filling out paperwork with Florida this late in the game should make things interesting as January approaches.

When Walker committed to Alabama in August, I wrote that his recruitment was far from over and it looks to be the case now. http://recruiting.blogs.gatorsports.com ... ver/?tc=ar

Gps3,

i laugh bc you are so enamored with 'bagmen' and Auburn even though you are clearly the King of the Jungle. Give it a rest, man. Enjoy the fruits of the team you pull fors labour. During this Holiday Season at least try to forget about lowly Aubbie. It's embarrassing.

CG, I must be misrepresenting myself here, because I rarely think about Auburn outside of how they affect Bama. I c&p'd that from the Rivals message board just for shits and giggles. I am more than happy with what Bama is accomplishing. More worried about LSU, A&M, etc.

4 star RB Tarean Folston is Irish. Picked ND over FSU and Oregon, among others.

This is the best ND recruiting class since the early 90's. Notre Dame still has a good chance at adding 5 star safety Max Redfield and 5 star DT Eddie Vanderdoes. Both players also decommitted from USC which is the bonus plan.

Ohio State gets big time linebacker from georgia, damnit

Cocks get PA top rb, considered ohio st and penn st, thank god

USC is facing a new recruiting mess involving standout defensive lineman Kylie Fitts, a 6-foot-4, 265-pound defensive lineman who graduated early from Redlands East Valley and has been a longtime Trojan commit.
Redlands East Valley Coach Kurt Bruich said on Tuesday that Fitts is no longer headed to USC after the Trojans told him on Monday they no longer had a spot for him to enroll early and wanted him to wait until June.
"The trust has been lost," Bruich said. "He did everything they asked of him."
Fitts played in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl last week. Bruich said USC coaches were looking forward to Fitts' arrival. Then plans suddenly changed.
Now Fitts is scheduled to meet with Bruich on Tuesday afternoon to discuss options and reopen his recruiting. UCLA had been actively recruiting him until his USC commitment months ago.
UCLA has already scheduled an official visit with Fitts for next week.
Fitts said on his Twitter account, "Always count your blessings because you never know would could happen and thats why I have Jesus Christ as my savior!!"

Alex Anzalone decommits from ND and will enroll at Florida...Kelly news too much for him? This kid decomitted from OSU already.

Marquez North cancels his OV with Clemson this coming weekend. Tar Heel fans are gonna be one disappointed/confused group if we don't get North now.

Alex Anzalone decommits from ND and will enroll at Florida...Kelly news too much for him? This kid decomitted from OSU already.

When you see a guy decommit from two schools the cards are stacked against that guy from ever working out. He's already got mental issues before he ever walks on to campus.

Priest Willis (DB, 6'2", 190, Marcos de Niza, AZ) - I've received conflicting reports on Willis. It appears that he truly remains undecided and is not just dragging this on for publicity. Willis has always been very high on LSU, and he's befriended a lot of Tigers and future Tigers, but distance is certainly a factor. I think this one will come down to the wire. 55/45.Robert Nkemdiche (DE, 6'5", 265, Loganville, GA) - Nkemdiche really likes LSU, and with Sam Montgomery and Keke Mingo moving on, and Lavar Edwards graduating, he knows that he could step in and start. However, his mother would like him to play at Ole Miss with his brother, linebacker Denzel Nkemdiche. According to this article by Jimmy Smith of nola.com, a line of communication has been established between LSU and Nkemdiche's Nigerian-born mother, and LSU remains very much in contention for his signature. 45/55Rueban Foster (LB, 6'1", 240, Auburn) - Widely regarded as the top ILB in the country, Foster was once committed to Auburn, and it looks to me that Auburn still holds the best chance of getting his signature. Foster would like to go somewhere where he'll see playing time early, and with Kevin Minter moving on LSU can offer him that more convincingly than before. 40/60Eddie Jackson (CB/WR, 6'2", 175, Fort Lauderdale, FL) - This is a relatively new name to surface. Jackson played wide receiver in high school but is being looked at as a CB by LSU. At this point he appears to be a strong lean to FSU, but he'll be visiting LSU On the 25th, and you never know what could happen once he’s in the Red Stick. After his visit I'll reevaluate his percentage, but for now I'll go with: 35/65Courtney Gardner (WR, 6'3", 215, Sierra College, Rocklin, CA) - Gardner would be a great get for LSU as he's just the type of tall receiver that LSU needs, especially if things don't work out with Quantavious Leslie. With that said, I’m cautiously optimistic that things will work out with Leslie, just not in time for him to enroll early as he once expected. Gardner still has quite a bit of work to do in the classroom, but if can get his academics in order he’ll be a Tiger. 35/65Kevin Spears (WR, 6'3", 190, Holy Cross, No. 27 on our list of Top LA Prospects for 2013) - Spears is a legitimate “sleeper” in this class who quietly garnered Class 4A All-State honors and could fill LSU's need for a tall receiver. He's only been playing football for a couple of years (he's also a very good basketball player), and that's why he sort of flew under the radar for a while. LSU has shown some interestt, but at this point there is no LSU offer on the table. Spears does have offers from San Diego State, Northern Colorado, and Utah, and is receiving interest from Florida, Kentucky, Maryland and in-state schools. 30/70Josh McNeil (TE, 6'6", 250, Durham, NC) - McNeil, who at one time was committed to Alabama, gave his verbal pledge to LSU after his visit a few weeks ago, but his commitment hasn't been officially accepted because there are some qualification concerns. If he is able to qualify, he will be a Tiger. 30/70 Tim Williams (LB/DE, 6'3", 225, University High, No. 11 on our list of Top LA Prospects for 2013) - There have been some unconfirmed reports that Williams will be announcing his school of choice tomorrow, but there are also reports to the contrary. As of now, Williams still has a visit scheduled with LSU on the 18th, but I think it's unlikely that he will be a Tiger as Miami appears to be the clear leader. 20/80.LSU is also still pursuing several other prospects currently committed to other schools. These include Tashawn Bower (DE, 6'5", 240, Somerville, NJ) and Jamal Carter (S, 6'1", 190, Miami) who are committed to Auburn and Miami respectively.

i agree, these kids seem to never workout. doesnt really seem like a fit at florida, not trying to pull a race card here but lets face it, i dont remember a white linebacker at florida. they said his daddy went there, when in 1965? who cares. i could see him at notre dame, penn state or ohio state but florida, cmon. seems odd.

ted roof quit penn state and went to ga tech as d coord. psu promoted db coach. penn state has a couple recruits from alabama who could switch to south carolina and tennessee now. roof was their southern connection.

roof now has 5 different jobs in 6 years.

Is this serious? They already had 2 white linebackers in this class before him. If they're good enough they are good enough regardless of what they look like. The shit that you type.

Thank you...there are some idiot opinions in this thread. #Gators

just odd to see a white backer at UF, they are usually filled by "athletic" kids.

who is the last white Gator LB of relevance who was white? I will wait. Maybe there is one, only guys i remember are monsters like Spikes, Jenkins, etc who run around with dreadlocks...Seems odd in those parts where they chase chickens and roosters in condemned homes that a suburb kid would go there from the cold.

and f psu, but he fits in better at white boy lbu, or even notre dame or ohio st where laurinits and katz starred. dont think the kid will play much at UF with all the superior competition for snaps.

funny we in big 10 get made fun of for slow white linebackers, unless they are going to sec schools even though they are from slow white northern towns, then they must be faster.

no lie no lie no lie
