Would a NFL player beat a UFC heavyweight

Couture is coming in at 235 lbs vs LESNAR- Lesnar is likely to be near 290 pounds at the fight--

This weight factor will give Lesnar a huge edge. Personally I think Couture will not last 2 minutes into this fight vs Lesnar. Couture has a glass jaw and beat nobody, again he is the best out of not very good fighters, Lesnar will show him and give him a good beating

ANd look at that picture, there is no ARM bars going to be executed against this animal. Quite frankly he is just too big and too strong--

It makes for an interesting matchup for sure.

of the Tape: Shawne Merriman vs. Jeremy Shockey

Competitor: Shawne Merriman
Nickname: “Lights Out”
Height: 6′4″
Weight: 272 (est. ring weight: 260)
Reach: Lengthy
Sponsor: MET-Rx
Hometown: Upper Marlboro, MD. The DC area has produced such fighters as Sugar Ray Leonard, Winky Wright, and most recently, the Patterson brothers (Anthony fights tomorrow night on Versus).
Fighting Pedigree: Last night his uncle Henry “Sugar Poo” Buchanan knocked some chump through the ropes with an uppercut at the Playboy Mansion on ESPN. Merriman could be seen in the ring during the post-fight celebration, which was pretty stupid. That house is filled with bitches needin’ some dick. He also trains in a boxing gym in the offseason to keep himself in shape.
Strength: Knocking people unconscious.
Weakness: The boxing world, while flawed, is much less forgiving when it comes to steroid use. Although I’m pretty sure he doesn’t actually need them. He was probably just trying to shrink his balls. Trust me, lugging around giant balls is like having an albatross hanging from your neck. Only they’re your balls.

Predilection towards violence: Rape?

Fighting Style:
The classic action fighter, Merriman will come at his opponent with plenty of power and zero restraint. He will smother weaker opponents (see below), but he’s fully capable of fighting at a distance. He possesses a dominating jab and a devastating overhand right.

—————————————————————-

Competitor: Jeremy Shockey
Nickname: Shock Man!
Height: 6′5″
Weight:251 (est. ring weight: 248)
Reach:Tara Reid.
Sponsor: Affliction.

Hometown:
Ada, Oklahoma. It was once the home of Shockey’s best friend Mark Gastineau, formerly of the New York Sack Exchange. Gastineau also pursued a “career” in boxing, and a similarly successful career in wife beating.

Pedigree:
Afghan.
Strength: Taking shots to the head.
Weakness: It’s almost like he wants people to hit him.

Predilection towards violence:
Lets his boys take care of approaching assholes.
Fighting Style: The first time he gets hit he’ll swarm the opponent with looping cuffed punches that glance away harmlessly. The second time he gets hit he’ll go down for 1-2 weeks. Shockey’s best punch is the accidental head butt which he often pairs with a wild elbow.

SAN DIEGO — Much can be learned from the manner in which a person handles success. Shawne Merriman burst onto the NFL scene last season like he had been there before, winning Defensive Rookie of the Year honors and becoming the first rookie outside linebacker to start in a Pro Bowl since the late Derrick Thomas in 1989.
Then he punished himself.
The San Diego Chargers' terror of a pass-rusher, already a workout maniac, took up boxing and a related ring discipline, Muay Thai (Thai boxing), as part of an offseason cross-training mission. What a scary thought for the blockers, passers and runners that await.
"Three minutes in the ring is one of the hardest things to do in the world," Merriman, 22, said during a camp break. "It's a full-body workout. It's not just the punching. You're moving around and your legs get tired. That's why a lot of boxers get knocked out."
Take it from a guy who was nicknamed "Light's Out" after knocking out four opponents with crushing hits during the first half of a football game in high school.
Merriman wasn't in the ring during the offseason to perfect his knockout punch, although at 6-4, 272, he has an intimidating, heavyweight presence. The aim was to increase his endurance, develop better hand-eye coordination and to add explosion to his already-impressive 4.65 speed in the 40-yard dash. While not slighting normal football workouts, Merriman trained three times a week at The Boxing Club in La Jolla, Calif., under two-time world Muay Thai champion Mel Menor.
In Muay Thai, the fighters don't only punch — they use elbows, knees and kicks, too. Menor used conventional-boxing training methods such as sparring, the jump rope and speed bag, to work Merriman's upper body. That was complemented by Muay Thai regimens to strengthen the lower body.
Chargers coach Marty Schottenheimer says Merriman's greatest quality is his pride.
Menor does not disagree. He says, "What I found out about Shawne was his willingness to continue, no matter how hard he was pushed. ... Football is a sport with bursts and breaks. Boxing is non-stop explosion. The elite boxers are the ones who are superbly conditioned."
Merriman, drafted 12th overall from Maryland last year, has a strong link to boxing. He is close to his uncle Henry "Sugar Poo" Buchanan, a rising light-heavyweight (14-0) based in Maryland.
Buchanan, who entered the ring for his July 28 bout wearing a No. 56 Merriman jersey, suggested that his nephew train like a boxer. Merriman thinks he is better for it, with a deeper reservoir of stamina.
"I don't think my endurance was really a problem last year," said Merriman, who led the Chargers with 10 sacks in 2005. His coming-out performance came in a December victory that ended the then-13-0 Indianapolis Colts' bid for a perfect season, when he was involved in three sacks of Peyton Manning and had three tackles for losses.
"But there's always a step higher that you can go. When you think you're in the best shape possible, look at yourself running around for three quarters, and look at your conditioning in the fourth quarter. Does it match where you were in the first quarter? If not, you're probably not in the best shape that you can be in."
Menor certainly tested this commitment. Merriman and his trainer both recall a particular marathon session that resulted in a breaking point.
"He'd work for a couple of weeks, then take off for a few days to go make some appearance somewhere or something," Menor said. "One time he came back with a news photographer. So I messed with him. I said, 'Are you really serious about this?' "
What followed was a solid hour of hard-core training, a virtual eternity in boxing time.
"He challenged me," Merriman remembers. "I was tired, exhausted, and I had to battle back with this little guy talking crap to me. I mean a little guy? It got under my skin."
Menor, who stands 5-7, laughs when told of Merriman's remarks.
"I got him good," he said. "I kept pushing until I finally made him scream, 'I give! I give!' I was trying to make him mad. But just to be on the safe side, I was backing away from him while I was talking trash."

This tells us a lot, when the 2nd best heavyweight in the WORLD is a pickem vs a guy that has fought 3 times and is a former WWE star. I guess I am not the only one thinking that it is a very competitive match-

In fact Couture would be -130 vs Merriman, somewhere in that range.
I don't know where you get off comparing merriman to Brock Lesnar. Lesnar is a World Class Wrestler. IMO Wrestling is the best skill set to start out with for an Ultimate Fighter. Some may say Jiu Jitsu but to each his own. And you've got to be kidding Merriman would be -130 against coutore. He would be lucky to be +650

I wish he was +650 I would load up on him.. He will probably make his way into MMA after his career is over in NFL.

That is true about the wrestling with Lesnar. BUt look at GSP he knows nothing about wrestling, all he did is wrestle with the canada olympic team and now he is the best wrestler in that division.

He trained A LOT with incredible wrestlers. Not saying it can't be learned over time

Let me ask you this. Say shawn Merriman wrestled a heavyweight wrestler at an Olympic qualifying tournament. You think think he would win. The answer is No. Same principle on a smaller scale as the Ultimate Fighter would be superior in multiple disciplines.

Obviously he cannot beat an Olympic wrestler in olympic rules wrestling. that is like asking if an olympic wrestler can play in the NFL and block Merriman.

However IMO wrestling would not come into effect vs a guy like Merriman. THis man is 6'4 270 pounds and can run a 4'6 40! That alone is scary and the fact he can box and is taking Muay Thai also-- He has the general athleticism to be good at MMA-

THere are guys who are better wrestlers, and better Jui Jitsu guys and maybe even better strikers also-- But when a guy with no striking skills at all in Lesnar is knocking out both MIR and Herring on their asses with punches it makes me wonder?

I dont see any wrestler having any advantage trying to tackle that guy Merriman, the article said he put 4 guys unconscious in a half of football. Peyton one of the greatest QB's to play in the NFL has been dominant of late, except for when he plays the Chargers and sees a certain linebacker go airborne right over the O line! The guy has Peyton shitting his pants, I would be scared also of that guy-

If the fight goes longer I can see a fighter using their array of skills vs Merriman. The fact remains that Lesnar a one dimensional fighter got both MIr and Herring down quickly, and had no finishing skills but still did that-

I would not recommend fighting or challenging a MMA guy to a fight in the streets. However MMA is overrated because no one takes into account the ability to take a punch, some MMA fighters cannot take one at all aka Liddell, GSP, Franklin, Sylvia--

There was these 2 mma fighters in Ontario that a girl told them that some guy was hitting on her. These 2 airhead mma clowns went up to the wrong guy tackled him outside the bar. One of the brothers went nuts and started to ground and pound him into the pavement. The guy was in a coma. It was very sad, and is indicative of the goons that train in MMA and use thier skills to beat the shit out of innocent people-

I honestly think that he can basically tackle, as we all know he is a good tackler, so the grappling is with Merriman, I have no doubts he can easily take down Couture. Then I feel like he will pin both of his shoulders back with his knees and just go to town throwing haymakers--

I would rate the fighters like this--

Strength-- Merriman 10- Couture 3.5

Speed -- Merriman 9.5 Couture 4.5

Grappling -- Merriman 9 Couture 6

Experience Merriman 3 Couture 10

Submissions Merriman 1 Couture 10

Ground and PNd Merriman 10 Couture 6

how is MERRIMAN going to prevent a rear naked choke? how about an arm bar? or maybe a a heel hook? or a knreebar? does he know how to to protect himself from these Submissions?

LESNAR couldn't even make it out of the 1ST ROUND... don't know how the refs saved him??? he mauled MIR as you say, and then he taped out from a kneebar, did he not? simple.

all that strength and power and he couldn't do anything about the submission.... he was HELPLESS... i'm sure the same thing would happen to MOST NFL players.... :shake:

gonna have to agree here.

I dont doubt that NFL players are stronger and better atheletes overall then MMA fighters, but these fighters are simply trained to fight, not to be the strongest or fastest.

Sure, Merriman could get in there, start throwing punches, manage to connect one great one, and KO a fighter, but I'd give the MMA fighter the other 9 fights if they fought ten.

Watch the Lesner/MIR fight (I think this is the one I'm talking about). Lesner spent the first minute making MIR his punching bag. MIR was getting owned, was on his back taking blows. Lesner got lazy and completely ignored his non dominant punching arm, and one armbar/wristlock, the fight is over, and Lesner is trained to know not to do that.

The athletecism is just not enough to overcome the training IMO

this thread is hilarious just in principle and once i read it was even better.

great early morning laugh! thanks CTG.

merriman > randy couture

sammy is clueless to the fact that skill and technique have more bearing on an MMA fight than strength, power, and a bullrush do.... for some reason he's stuck in the belief that if you're strong you will dominate the guy in all aspects of a fight...

merrimam can train all he wants on submission defense, it's a totally different game when he actually has to step in the ring and has to defend himself from a guy who is looking for the smallest window of opportunity to end the fight (mir over lesnar via kneebar)... you can't train for that and he would quickly be exposed....

Couture is coming in at 235 lbs vs LESNAR- Lesnar is likely to be near 290 pounds at the fight--

wow... such ignorance...

lesnar WILL NOT be weighing 290 for the fight, don't know where that number came from.... pull it out your ass maybe?

also, glass jaw? beat nobody? how do you become the world champ by not beating anybody? i'm not say Randy is the god of MMA, but he's has certainly been one of the best over the years....

Lesnar cuts weight to make the 265 max in HW division. He'll be around 280-290 on fight night as he has been for the last 2 bouts.

i have a hard time believing he cuts 25 lbs. for weigh-ins, and then puts that 25 lbs. back on before the fight....

he's probably more in the 275-80 lb. range....

Sammy, you have a solid mind about football, but no clue about MMA fighting. Your statement you couldn't put an arm bar is hilarious. Shawn Merriman's arm is not strong enough to stop any arm bar. It's physically impossible because of the leverage created with your hips.

With the proper technique and training, anyone at CTG could put an arm bar on someone who's 10x's stronger and bigger. You could put an arm bar on Merriman with the right training that he couldn't get out of.

Your basing this asinine arguement on the fact you believe Merriman is quicker and stronger than anyone else in MMA. The problem is quickness and brute strength are a small piece of MMA fighting.

I've trained almost my entire life in martial arts and I have zero doubt Merriman could get me down on the ground, but once on the ground I would have a distinct advantage, especially if he pulled the "knees on shoulders" routine that you described earlier. I've sparred with fighters who weigh 230-240 and are 50 pounds heavier than me and if they have zero technique it's easy to get the upper hand.

Look at someone like Royce Gracie who went undefeated for about 7 years. They guy weighs about 170 and took down every heavyweight and MMA fighter there was. Gracie was not big or strong, but his technique in his prime was flawless and guys with 10x's the strength had no chance against him.

i love the Royce Gracie in his prime vs. ANY HW comparison...

proves this whole point to a t. :shake:

sammy is clueless....

fixed it for ya

SAMMY - I am calling bullshit.

You just said Couture has a glass jaw.
The guy fought how many fights before being knocked down for the first time against Liddell? ALOT. Also, why pick Randy the Brett Favre of UFC for your comparisons. The dude is damn near 45 and has retired several times already. Your thoughts and ideas are deeply flawed on this one.

ALSO, once Merriman fails the drug test the fight doesnt count anyway.

i have a hard time believing he cuts 25 lbs. for weigh-ins, and then puts that 25 lbs. back on before the fight....

he's probably more in the 275-80 lb. range....

I guess 295 when watching his last fight. My coworker said a guy of his size could easily pile on 20+ pounds but admitted 30 seemed like alot.
However, we both agreed he was at least 35lbs heavier than Herring.

You ever fight a tomato can? When they launch themselves at you, they tend to bruise you.

But so do the contents.

Oh my how funny.

I personally think Shawn Merriman would kick the shit out of Randy Couture within 30 seconds. I think Couture would be on a stretcher and hurt badly-

I wondered about this and thought a guy athletic like Merriman with his strength would annilihate any heavyweight. I dont think anyone could take him down, and I believe he would hit way to hard for anyone to take.

I doubt it he could be submitted either.

ANy thoughts?

My thought: I would bet you any amount of money that Couture would make very quick work of Merriman.

By your comments, I can deduce that you likely have no background in wrestling and have never seen a fight between a good grappler and a brute strength type guy. Technique means plenty. This is evident when you see wrestlers give up 40lbs in a fight, yet embarrass football players.

Wow...I go away for a few days and this thread is still alive...

GSP has a brown belt in jui-jitsu...so he's not some slouch. Clearly you are very blind in grappling and MMA. It's always going to be technique over strength in the grappling game. While Meriman can be the strongest fighter, if his arm is slapped tight in an armbar, his joints will brake..plain and simple.

Sammy, you keep dogging on Couture and so what he got KO by Lidell..anything can happen in MMA. But at least give respect where it's due...I mean besides Lidell, the guy has trained speciafically fro each opponent, which makes him dangerous and multi-demensional. Since you think so highly of Merriman, why not compare himw with Fedor? I remember Merriman was tearing up the NFL and then "bamm"...busted for steriods. Then the very next season....where was he? I do give him credit and all NFL players that they're very athletic and strong. But you act like Merriman can kick the shit out of Couture wihout even trying. Dont forget that Couture's training and skills is top notch...even at 45.

You should compare Merriman with Fedor, if you want talk cream of the crop.....
