Week 7 What Are We Learning

Oh my! Franklin and Co really sulked after Duck loss in OT.
I had Buckeyes to roll and they really didn't. First two td's off of turnovers saved my cover as Illini outgained the Bucs.
Indiana, damn they burn me when I bet against them. They actually played sloppy, how many illegal procedures?, gave up a pic-6 and still had the game!
Michigan, hate to say it, played like I expected and even worse. They were out coached as Riley dialed up every screen imaginable against the blitz.
UCLA impressed me as I lost the Over bet, even though it was Sparty.
Maryland lost which I expected, but they put up some points. Didn't see the game.

More thoughts; Ducks seemed to be playing not to lose. Was it Indy's defense? Not sure.
Buckeyes have little if any run game. But they have a defense to make it so much easier.

- Man, the experience at the Cotton Bowl just never disappoints. It's simply incredible. If you ever have the opportunity to go, do it.

- Resilient effort by the Horns. I didn't see it coming but I'm done trying to figure the team out. Manning was very good - mistake free, making the easy throws, which he should. Making difficult throws that many wouldn't. Crucial no-call on a block in the back on the punt return TD. I don't think it matters as OU couldn't generate anything in the 2H. Hats off to Mateer. The thumb was clearly bothering him as the game wore on.

- What do you say about a team that goes into Autzen, imposes its will on the home team and beats it down? You say that team has as good a chance as any to win a national title. Indiana does. I read an On3 piece this morning that said IU has the 72nd most talented (recruiting ranked) team in the country. That's 3 spots behind Boston College. Think coaching doesn't matter? Google "Cignetti" if you're wondering.

- Embarrassment doesn't begin to describe that debacle in Happy Valley. End of the day cost Franklin his job. Was travel a reason this time around? Helluva drive from the student dorms to the stadium for the PSU team. I see where Allar is out for the year. I'd argue he was out for the year before it ever started.

- Speaking of embarrassing, oh Luke Fickell. Giving up 37 to one of the worst offenses in the sport while getting shut out at home for the first time in 45 years? Endearing yourself to the deep pockets, no doubt.

- Tech and A&M are destined for the playoff. Just methodically putting teams away. Sorry for the kiss of death, Press.

- UCLA now a juggernaut?

- Officiating as a crutch is just that. We can agree Auburn's been done favors this year, let's say. A lot of weirdness in Norman earlier this season. And are you clapping or calling a timeout last night, Kirby? The game-changing and abysmal ruling on that TD by Arnold late 2H was just that, abysmal. If you're that bad in the replay booth then consider waiting tables or something. Dear lord.

I mentioned it during the in-game, but DeBoer and staff are figuring out how to win on the road and when things don't go perfectly. I thought it was all Milroe when the team, especially the offense panicked when things went sideways, but after the FSU game this year I was concerned it may be a DeBoer thing. No longer. Alabama didn't play great in CoMo, and Mizzou isn't elite IMO, but that was still a good, tough win. There are certainly things they need to get figured out, because the schedule doesn't get easier, but they have positioned themselves well at this point in the season. The likely concussion suffered by Jam Miller is huge, because they are a different team with him on the field. I have not seen any official announcement about Jam's injury, but it sure looked like a concussion to me. I thought the hit was clean FWIW

Hopefully the whole college football world took notice of the referee debacle in Auburn on Saturday. Unfortunately, that is not an uncommon occurrence in the SEC. It was worse than usual, and actually screwed the home team, but I have seen too many games where the refs are just completely overwhelmed and cannot do their job. Despite what you saw on the fumble at the goal line, the refs were moving bodies out of the pile completely oblivious that the ball was out and being run by a Georgia player to the other end zone. FWIW, I couldn't tell on replay whether it was a TD or not, so I think upholding the call on the field was probably the right decision. But the last 90 seconds of game time took over 30 minutes of real time. That is a sign the refs have completely lost the game. Then whatever that was with the Kirby clap/TO situation. The ref basically just did what Kirby told him. Credit to Kirby there I guess. Tough way to lose for AU, but there's still no excuse for whatever that was that they put on the field in the 2nd half. I think they are on the verge of quitting. If we get to Thursday and their AD and coaches are still talking about the refs, then go ahead and feel free to fire in strong on Mizzou. I doubt Hugh survives a loss this week, so maybe we'll see max effort

What does your dad have to say about Super Bowl III? Was it fixed, and was he on the right side?

He used to say all the time that 1 of the 3 solid locals here in WNY would not take action on the game unless you took the Colts. Said he thought that was very strange during the week leading up to the game. Also fishy that the other 2 larger books here had the line at -14/14.5 , 4/3.5 points lower than the actual line....Sounds like they were begging for Colts money imo ...

He also says the total was fishy after the first 2 super Bowls went over the total. The actual total was 40 for SB3 and the books here had 37 ...

My friend from Miami was only two at the time, but he told me what his dad told him, which was very convincing. His dad was Italian and from Youngstown, Ohio.

SEC crews favoring the visitor used to be par for the course. When Bobby Gaston was the head of officiating, in games among the big six the visitor won 55% of the time and coveted almost 2/3 of the time.

And Auburn still has a lot of karmic debt to pay for that 2010 season, much of it due to the ACC crew that did the Clemson game. But I guess the point isn’t that Auburn got screwed, but how incompetent they appeared in doing it.

LOL. The reputation. My wife was listening to a podcast of some sort, Crooked City I think it was. One of the episodes they were describing this guy and she's like "hey that's my daughter's neighbor"!

Auburn hasn't even come close to paying the debts for 2010 or 2013, but this helps. My comment was mainly geared toward the Jason Autrey crew that gets so frazzled in loud environments that they inexplicably make phantom calls based on crowd reaction. See Alabama @ Tennessee in 2022, Arkansas @ AU in 2020 and many others. There was a stretch of several seasons where they were the crew for every game that Alabama lost, so maybe I'm a little jaded

Variables like bad officiating hurt the best teams the most.
