San Jose St took a lead 3-0 on their second poss, punted from Army territory on their third and never really got close to scoring again. Army scored 52 unanswered starting with a 41y TD pass 7-3. Then Army converted a 4th down on their way to a 14-3 HT lead. In the 2nd H SJSt amazingly had 4 straight drives end in fumbles! Fumble at the S19, S10, S35 and A48 (ret’d for D TD)…Army got 24pts off those with just 48 yards of offense! Army also had 75y and 80y TD drives in the half and ended the game at the S17. Little offense was to be found between Troy and Liberty. Teams traded TOs and 3-and-out punts throughout the 1st qrt until Troy connected on 49 and 23y passes on the final two plays of the quarter for a 7-0 lead. LU responded with a 10p 75y drive that featured a 4th down conversion…7-7. Troy went back up with a 38y FG then LU capped another 75y drive with a TD for the 14-10 HT lead with total yardage essentially being equal 189-186 (teams combined 3-of-16 3rd down). Troy opened the 3rd with a career long 50y FG for Sumpter to cut the lead to 14-13. The teams only combined for 86 yard in the qrt. A short punt and good return set up Troy at the L36 and Troy took the lead on a 26y FG. 16-14. Teams traded punts. LU took over at their own 11 with 6min left. They would convert 3rd down 3x including two 3rd and longs on their way to a 14p 89y TD drive (2pt good) 22-16…2:23 left. That drive was 20 more yards than Liberty had on all four of their prior 2nd H drives combined. Troy was sacked on back-to-back plays being SOD at their own 12. LU killed all but the final :13, Troy ran 3 plays but weren’t able to do anything. FD even at 17. LU 341-293 (4.4-4.2). Troy only gained 107 (2.8ypp) 2nd H yards. Akron led 3-0, but would punt from their own territory the next 5 1st H possessions. Buffalo missed a FG, but then scored a TD end of 1st qrt. Bulls also threw an INT from the A11 after a 51y drive and kicked a 30y FG to lead 10-3. Akron managed a FG as the half expired. UB led 10-6 with a 208-121 yard edge. UB scored TDs on 75y and 80y drives. Akron’s longest drive of the half was just 29 yards as they only crossed midfield once. 24-6 F. UB had 20-13 FD and 425-235 TY edge (5.7-3.9), 47-21% 3rd down. Each team threw an INT. UB D 3 sacks. Buffalo became bowl eligible for just the 4th time in school history. This week QB Tyree Jackson wore #41 which the team is awarding to a different player each week to honor fellow UB football player Soloman Jackson who died 2 years ago. WR Anthony Johnson returned to action after not playing week 6 and playing a very limited role week 5.

Eastern Michigan finally won a close game. Although it wasn’t that close at first and EM nearly blew it at the end. EM scored TDs on their first 3 poss. Toledo went 3-and-out twice to start, kicked a 35y FG and then were SOD at the E16 and E45. EM added a TD after the SOD to lead 28-3 HT with a 311-183 yard edge (Eagles had 201 rushing – 10 more than UT allows for a game)! UT was still struggling in the 3rd qrt, punting from midfield, only managing a FG after a punt ret to the E14 and SOD at the E18. EM couldn’t do much either, missing a FG and punting 3 straight poss. UT got their first TD of the game with 11min left in the 4th 28-13, and the comeback attempt would be on. Their second TD came on a 9p 80y drive, 28-20, but then threw an INT at the E47 with 3:37 left. UT used all 3 timeouts and EM went for 4th-and-1 at their own 42 with 1:45 left and were SOD! UT wasted no time was at the E09 1st and goal after two plays. Two incompletions and a sack brought up 4th down with :26 left. EM called timeout. Guadagni escaped pressure and would run it in from 10y out….28-26 2pt conversion was….knocked away! The onside kick went out of bounds. 28-26 F. EM’s first win vs Toledo since 2006. One of EM’s QBs Mike Glass was on crutches at the end of the game after being injured in the 1st H. He earned his first start of the year ran for 125y on 10att w/ 2 TDs and was the first EM QB to ever run for back-to-back 100y games. Wiegers finished the game and has started every game this year, but Glass had been used often. UT finished with 25-18 FD, but EM finished with 412-376 TY (6.8-4.8) edge. EM D registered 5 sacks (UT D 2). EM was just 1-of-9 3rd down 1-of-2 4th down, UT 38% 3rd down but 1-of-4 4th down. UT was called for 16 penalties 130y! EM called for 11-138y!

Miami Oh was SOD at the K28 to open, but would score on TD drives of 98y, 74y and 82y to lead 21-0 HT. Kent was in Mia territory 4x in the 1st half resulting in only a missed FG (punted 3 other times). In the 2nd H Kent could only get into Mia terr twice, one ended on an INT at the M18 the other a TD with under 1min left in the game. Mia scored 10pts on their first two poss before cruising the rest of the game. 31-6 F. MU 25-14 FD, 504-274 TY (6.6-4.6) with 295y (5.8) rushing to Kent’s 125y (4.0). Each team lost a turnover. Western Michigan would tie 28-28 in the 3rd qrt. BG briefly would retake a 35-28 lead before WM tied again 35-35 early 4th. After a BG punt, WM went 11p 84y for the 42-35 lead with 5min left. BG lost three 2nd H TOs all in WM terr (fumble at W41, INT from the W15 and from the W49 on their final 2 drives). WM had 33-19 FD and 568-511 TY (6.2-9.1). WM ran for 282 (5.2) to BG’s 132 (6.3). BG lost 4 TOs, WM lost 2. WM had 38-22 TOP edge and 44-36% 3rd down. Broncos 4-of-5 4th down (BG 0-for-1).

Central Michigan used strong D and some efficient O to build a 20-7 HT lead over Ball State. CM scored on their first four poss of the 1st H, one TD was a 3p 20y drive after a fumble. BSU made it into CM terr on 4 out of 5 poss, but managed just one TD drive. CM O struggled in the 2nd H. BSU missed a FG, then CM was SOD at the B27 providing a turning point in the game. BSU took that 12p 73y for TD then after a CM punt BSU went 11p 80y to lead 21-20. Having not scored since 5:41 mark in the 2nd qrt ,CM nailed a 47y FG with 4min left in the game for a 23-21 lead. BSU had been in this situation before, down 1 score with the ball last and failed on their previous 3 such attempts to comeback. BSU would go 12p 56y with a 4th down conversion and make a 36y FG with :47 left for the lead. CM advanced to the B48 before time ran out. 24-23 F. BSU had 26-23 FD, but CM had 388-359 TY (5.3-4.6) with a 261-157 (5.2-3.1) RY edge. CM D had 5 sacks (BSU 2). Both QBs ran a ton. Riley Neal’s 24 rush attempts were career high, after taking out the sacks, his other 19att netted 84y. CM’s Lazzaro ran 24-131 w/ TD.

Northern Illinois drove 16p 77y but had to settle for a 36y FG to lead 3-0. NIU then had 1st down at O43, but would punt to the O08. Ohio hit a 70y pass to the N15, OU would have their drive kept alive with TWO D PI penalties and eventually got a TD to lead 7-3 (took OU 7 plays from the 5 to score). NIU got some big plays and quickly retook the lead 9-7 (bad xpt snap). The rest of the half was punts. NIU had a 224-153 1st H yard edge. OU was 0-for-4 3rd down, NIU 5-of-10 in the half. OU fumbled and threw INT on their first two poss of the 3rd qrt, but NIU had to punt after both then OU got a 56y TD pass to lead 14-9 mid 3rd. OU was able to extend the lead to 21-9 at the end of the 3rd with a 11p 90y drive. NIU converted 4th down on their way to a 12p 77y TD drive….21-16 then after another OU fumble, NIU turned that one into a 6p 53y TD drive to take a 24-21 lead (2pt good). Ohio went 3-and-out with 3:49 left and punted having all 3 timeouts. NIU drove 8p 42y and got to the O08 before taking knees. NIU had 25-19 FD and 400-321 (5.1-5.8) TY edges. San Diego State used a 55y pass to key their opening drive TD. SDSt’s next 3 poss wouldn’t get beyond their own 20 and on their 5th Agnew was sacked in the EZ for a safety…7-2. AF’s first 4 poss were all punts until they ret’d the KO after that safety 66y to the S27 ,but AF would miss a 43y FG early 2nd qrt. SDSt started moving the ball, but threw an INT in the EZ and AF took that 9p 80y to lead 9-7. SDSt would miss a FG, but blk’d a punt for TD with just :08 left in the half and took a 14-9 lead into the locker room. Each team punted 3x to open the 2nd H. AF got a 20y completion on 3rd-and-19 on their way to a 17-14 lead (2pt good) 9min left. NM would get a 53y punt ret to the C12 and TD 3 plays later and led 18-17! CSU would drive to the N08 with a 1st down. NM made a pair of tackles at the goal line. CSU would attempt an 18y FG, but it was missed with 2:29 left! The miss was so surprising since Wyatt Bryan is 5th all time MWC with 50 career FGs. NM failed to get a first down and had to punt back with 2min left, CSU started on their own 27. Rams got as far as the N08 and Bryant made good on this 26y FG attempt as time expired. 20-18 F. USU K Eberle came into the game a perfect 9-for-9, but missed his first 2 kicks of the year. Utah State is 5-1 for the first time since 1978.

Wyoming’s opening drive went 8p 47y for a 45y FG, QB Vander Waal was 3-of-3 on the drive for 27y, he would finish the game just 12-32-117-0-1. Khalil Tate reinjured his ankle on a late 1st qrt sack and Arizona’s chances went from slim to none. 2nd stringer Joiner wasn’t effective and they handed the keys to 3rd stringer Rhett Rodriguez, yes that Rodriguez. Rodriguez did best he could 20-38-226-1-0 with most of his success coming in the second half with the game already decided. Utah scored on their first 2 poss and the last 2 poss of the half to lead 28-0. Arizona had just 29y rushing and 114 total yards in the 1st H. They ran the clock down setting up for the would-be winning 37y FG, but it was missed! In OT UW got a 1st-and-goal at the 6, but had to settle for a 22y FG and Ducks needed 6 plays to get in the EZ for the 30-27 win. Ore 24-22 FD, UW 437-379 TY (6.2-4.7). Sun Belt

Arkansas State opened 3-and-out and had just a 10y punt, but App St was SOD at ASU32. After that ASU had two punts and drives of 54y, 45y, 48y and 48y end in FGs from the 14, 30, 16, and SOD at ApSt27 while AppSt punted 4x and had a 4p 75y TD drive…ASU led 9-7 and had a 207-106 yard edge at this point. AppSt had another 4p 74y TD drive to lead 14-9 with 3min left. Critical moment of the game occurred on the next possession. ASU ran the kick out of the EZ, were tackled short of the 20 plus were called for a penalty backing them up. ASU faced 3-and-1 and ran a shallow outside curl where the DB jumped the route and ret’d it inside the 5 and 3 plays later AppSt had a 21-9 lead scoring 2 TDs in 2min of game time. ASU drove down to the A43 with a 1st down :20 left, but threw an INT deep down the middle to a receiver surrounded by defenders to end the half 21-9 AppSt despite ASU having a 226-187 TY edge and 12-7 FD edge. Texas State held Georgia Southern to 164y rushing, 111 yards below their avg and the only other team to hold GaS to under 200y rushing was Clemson! Off a short week TxSt allowed ULL 327y rushing in their last game. TxSt SOD at G02 on their first drive and punted 4x after gaining minimal yardage. GaS got into the RZ just twice in the first half and came away with a TD and a 25y FG to lead 10-0 HT. The FG “drive” was just 4p 9y set up off an INT and return. The teams exchanged fumbles in the 3rd then TxSt QB Jones was tackled in the EZ for a safety…12-0, GaS later kicked a 43y FG to lead 15-0 late 3rd. TxSt TE Brown took a jet sweep 61y (TxSt longest play of the ssn) and then ran it in from the 3 to make it a 15-7 game. Teams exchanged punts in the 4th until 4min left. LSU started the same OL combo for the first time in consecutive games vs Georgia and ran more of a hurry up no huddle offense catching UGA off guard and maybe wearing them down. LSU went up 3-0, then UGA faked a FG from the L14 on 4th-and-9 that was stopped and fumbled for a 2y loss. LSU got a 47y run then a 4th-and-goal QB sneak TD for a 10-0 lead early 2nd qrt. The first was on the fake FG att SOD, the other two were deep in UGA territory and Dawgs did hold LSU to just two FGs on those. LSU D 4 sacks (UGA D 3). LSU was 4-of-4 4th down. LSU’s gameplan after the Florida game was to go for 4th down if it was close regretting not going for some the prior week. It worked.
