Wednesday MLB Discussion/Thoughts

Thing i like about wainwright is that he trusts his stuff and throws strikes. the scared pitcher in coors is just an ineffective pitcher. walks are a killer there.

but as nut pointed out , the thin air there does not help the curveball much.

better check lineups . cubs might be resting people. especiallya banged up ramirez in a night/day situation

i havent checked so not saying that is why just guessing. ... it is the last game of the road trip

Baltimore's offense is so sketchy, especially on the road, that I find it hard to back them. However, they do have a good history against Blanton and Oakland has not hit Guthrie particularly well in 2 starts. Guthrie's Achilles heel has been the inopportune long ball this year(he is carrying a solid 1.24 Whip and .244 BAA).

I think pitching in Oakland helps his cause a little as ESPN's park factor indicates that in 2007 Oakland was one of the most favorable parks for HRs to pitchers. One of his two turns against Oakland was on the road and he put forth a 7 IP, 2 hit effort. I'm liking the O's for the first five here, as I don't trust their pen all that much.

Think if Payton plays over Scott or Jones the lineup is 22-66 vs him with Markakis and Mora hitting well in limited looks 9-20 3hrs 8 rbi

Think at that price also prefer Guthrie and I know as far as run support goes Big Hurt has crushed it past few season in day games if I recall correctly....

Orioles 10-1 UNDER in day games(last one an over though) and A's 9-3 UNDER in day games again why 8 total here should be 7.5 IMO ? I mean Guthrie won 2-0 there vs Dallas Braden and that total was 9 which was clearly at least 1/2 run to high...so if 8.5 was correct then 7.5 seems likely here but who knows...West lowest scoring game is 9-0...gotta love this stat..A's 0-9 and 1-9 last 10 games he did for them back to 0-3 ...including 0-5 and 1-5 at home ...so basically Oak won the 1st game he umped in the last 10 and then lost the following 9 which 5 were in Oakland.....seems even more reason to take O's on top of probably have the SP edge...crazy stuff looking at West 2-5 hme team this year and while this game is -140ish last season favs -120 and under at home were 0-8 with him! If expanded to -140 or less 1-9 ( so 1-1 from 120 to 140) , 9-7 -140 or less (6-5 in this range) , 6-8 (4-4 in this range) and 0-3 (0-1 in the range 120 to 140) this year...so guy doesnt seem to do well with small home favs....

I mean 1-12 since the beginning of 2007 with home favs of -140 or less and 15-15 previous 2 years in that range for 16-27 giving the ROAD team a huge edge at 27-16 ! While its realy skewed for the smallest home chalk the 120 to 140 range he is 11-11 past few years seems to make small road dogs great value when he is behind the dish and he definetly seems to have some OVER tendecies.....
I guess we have to hope the A's games stays under -140 on Wed ....

maybe .... but i would rather see him in the lineup ( i bet the reds )... he has struggled catching up to fastballs since he got back and the righty volquez would have been tough on him.

lol ... the reds lineup sucks donkeyballs ... why did i bet the reds over 77 wins again ?

thanks for the lineups trainwreck.

The changes in Cincy are Keppinger sitting for Hairston which I kinda hate but think Kepp is slumping a bit its juts he is 353 lifetime vs Chi but he has only been 1-6 this series. Hairston was a beast his 1st two games and little since think 1-14...Soriano has been struggling but Reed Johnson is a solid pro..

corey patterson is the biggest bonehead in the game, I can't believe the Reds don't have a OF prospect they could bring up to replace his worthless ass.

They have the best outfield baseball prospect in the minors right now in Bruce.

As bad as patterson has been ( and he is so bad he consistently makes baserunning errrors ) .... adam Dunn has just been a rally killing nightmare for reds backers.

yeah, but soriano is always a HR threat as a lead off too.. rather have reed johnson in there..

Just looking at how things setup I had to take Baltimore here & the over 8.

First as we said might be a "silly' trend but when road teams hit at such a huge clip with a particular UMP I think I would prefer to like the road team that day. Here thankfully I do.

Road teams are 27-16 past 2 + seasons with him as ump when the home team is fav by 140 or less and 11-11 when favored between -120 and -140....

As we pointed out Guthrie has had 2 good starts vs Oakland who has not hit well in day games but then again neither has Baltimore. 3runs per in 13 for O's and 4 runs per in 10 with sme inprovement since Thomas and Davis came aboard. If Hrs have been Guthrie's achilles just 4 in the day for Oak so far but Big Hurt has been a day masher . Also Oak just 18Hrs all year so about 1 every other game....

Blanton is 0-5 at home with 4 1 run losses and I guess if we count Japan 0-6 with 5 1 Run losses ! No run support whatsover 1 ,1 ,2 ,4 ,3 in the real hommies...last 3 at home he allowed 4,5,4 and before that 2 in both .

RHB are 36 -112 and OBP is 42-118...

Granted Blanton was excellent at home last year he was definetly one of his better years at Oak (McAfee) . Think 7 + innings in 12 of 16 never allowing more then 3 runs and had two other starts where he went 6.2 innings...

Since opening day Guthrie has allowed 15 runs in 39 innings.

Also best every 5 days....like he is here but Blanton also seems to best on normal rest..

He goes deep into games 7 times 7 + innings , 3 times 6 innings and just twice 5 innings...this year 7 + twice , 6 once and 5 inn once...

Last year vs RHP O's 272 vs A's 256 but this year balt just 237 vs Oaks 261..Oak 6-5 at home vsRHP 4-6-1 Over but they had a 3 game sweep vs KC and all RHP included...so otherwise only 3-5 vs RHP.....Orioles 4-7 away vs RHP and 1-10 OVER....

So again with every trend pointing to the under how is this total 8 with vig on the over ??

Lineups PLEASE.....:36_11_6::cheers:

Well I got distracted commenting on the A's vs Orioles game but.......

Back to Back to Back Hrs !!!!!!! and then Hairston added one....so Leibers day issues and struggles vs LHB continue !!! I am somewhat heavily invested in this game but already won a play ...

Over 1st 5 Inn Reds 4.5 Runs
Reds ML 1st 5 Inn
Reds -1.5 RL +140
Reds ML {2u}

Parlayed Reds ML , Rockies ML , Mariners , WSox ML at 7 to 1 1/2 unit

and the grand salami over 137 again.....

Lets hope they keep up the good hitting and Volzquez sticks to his prior performances...GL all:cheers:

So far at 3 Pm have

Orioles
Over 8 A's
Mets

Probably have a bit more on the sides then the total as that is a WTF play..

Penny also finished off a three-game home sweep of the Mets last June 13 with a seven-inning, one-run outing, but he's struggled overall against New York, going 5-11 with a 5.66 ERA. He's 5-4 in his last nine starts versus the Mets after dropping his first seven career decisions against them.
He'll face John Maine (3-2, 3.48), who has never beaten the Dodgers. Maine has won his last two starts and allowed two or fewer runs in five straight, but he has lost all three of his career starts against Los Angeles, allowing 22 hits and 14 runs - nine earned - in 16 innings.
Each of Maine's last two wins followed a Mets loss, including Friday's game at Arizona, where he allowed two runs in six innings of a 7-2 win. But he still hasn't made it through the seventh this season.
"I'd like us to get a little more length from our starters. That's what any manager wants," Mets manager Willie Randolph said after Nelson Figueroa's five-inning, five-run outing Tuesday.
The Mets are trying to salvage a .500 road trip after they took two of three against the Diamondbacks over the weekend. A third straight loss Wednesday would match their longest slide of the season.
New York had just five hits in Monday's loss, then left 13 men on base on Tuesday. The Mets' offensive struggles have centered around third baseman David Wright, who is 0-for-8 with five strikeouts in the series and has only one hit in his last 17 at-bats.

I was at a prominent Mets blog and read that it is very likely the Mets will be resting a number of regular players today.

So why fade Penny here ?? or a team winners of 11 or 12 at near even money ??

So immediately what we see is YOY he doesnt pitch well in day games and seemingly is better when getting an extras days rest. Always having a slightily higher ERA and higher BAA onnormal rest vs extended rest.

Has he improved on normal rest really this season? @ Sd , vs Pitt , @ Cincy , vs Col . Lost @ SD 4-1 , 6 inn 10H 4 runs the other 3 starts he got 8 , 9 and 11 runs of support...Whe he started vs Pitt 6-0 after 2 innings , @ Cincy where his career record is bonkers 5-0 after 3 inn( 7-0 after 5 inn) , vs Col the 10 spot in the 1st inning.....not very hard to win and pitch decent in those situations where you are up 5 + runs after 3 innings vs below avg offenses. Just how good is he vs those teams? How bout 7-2 3.00 ERA vs Cincy in 11 starts and 14-2 3.06 ERA vs COL in 23 starts. Even better 5-0 @ Great American in 5 starts with a 1.91 ERA

Brad Penny (R) Previous Starts vs. NY Mets

Granted Penny has improved vs NY since his FLorida days.

Alou 10-24
Beltran 3-15 ?
Church 3-9
Delgado 6-21
Reyes 7-26
Scheinder 5-21 but 6bbs to 1 K( so 11-27 OBP)
Wright 9-14 2hrs 6 rbi hopefully can breakout here
Easley 3-8 if at 2nd base

So really no one struggles...outside of Beltran and star hitters are capable of the big hit at anytime...

Maine has labored some so far this year after a great ST but still 29.2 innings and 9 runs last 5 starts.

Either 1/3
Furcal 5/9 may not play after being scratched yesterday and would guess he doesnt here
Jones 0/6
Kemp 2/4
Kent 2/5
Looney 0/3
Martin 0/5
Pierre 3/8
2hrs 6 rbi 5bb 4ks..and one of the OFers has to sit and DeWitt has never seen him...

Think of the 2 SP especially if Furcal sits Penny gets hit harder by his opponent.

Mets and LAD are the 2 worst offenses in the dayin the NL. LAD has scored only 24 runs in 10 day games going 4-6 but 10-0 UNDER . The real OUCH is 217avg and .618 OPS which makes NYM look like monsters at 235 avg and 683 OPS. Mets have scored 50 in 13 games so almost 4runs per(3.9ish). Possibly even worse is they have just 20 XBH in 10 games compared to NYMs 35 in 13.....

Now granted last years Maine ERA was not good in day games but batters hit only 230 off him so the untimely HRs with 7 and probably a bad start o two skewing the stats just like the game this year vs ATL. It was pushed back after a rain out and it was his 1st start so the extra rest could have hurt and it didnt help he was opposing Hudson who was making his 2nd start of the season.

With Maine he is ayoung SP who at times has pitched like an ALL STAR but also who limped to the finish line last year maybe due to fatigue in his 1st full season as a SP in the majors. His 1st H numbers were remarkable last year. 10-4 2.71 ERA and I cant totally dismiss one start vs LAD was in June one of the only two 1st half starts where he allowed more then 3 runs...looking at th eboxscore he allowed 3 soloo Hrs in the 2nd inning to Betemit ( NYY now) , Kemp , and Kuo the opposing SP! So granted bad start to teh game 3 inn 6 h after 2 but then only more hit the rest of the way 5.2 inn and the pen allowed an inherited run to score. So not great but probably not as bad as it looks either. The 2nd start was in the midst of a slump where he allowed 3runs or more and never completed 6 innings for the first 5 starts of August . He wasokay till the 5th inning allowing 1 run3 hits then they got 2runs and 4 hits still respectable 3 runs in 5 innings. Then the 6th NY fell apart. groundout , error , strikeout ending should be over but isnt...back to backsingles with 2 outs drives ina run and then the pen comes in to give up a few more hits.....so really he should have walked away with 6 inn 7h 3 runs....great no but somewhat respectable IMO.....

So dont weigh Maines past vs LAD as such as negative IMO as its skewed......Penny is Ryan Dempster a SP shining because his offense is scoring so damn much except now they have scored in day games just 2.4 per game......

Both teams have huge trends for the SP and Joyce loves his home teams as they have won 11 of 12 and mets only 2-9 last 11 he umped....but the road team has won Joyces last 4 wed starts..lol....although despite NYM bad record when he UMPS Glavine started 6 of those games and was 1-5 so DISMISSED! Although like strike % at 61 he has 5 unders already and I look at the SP matchups and see Peavy @ home vs Penny , Bedard , Danks vs Eveland in Chi , McGowan vs Bonderman in Tor , Gaudin at home...

So for the total not sure what to expect conflicting data all over the place usually day games in LA equal overs but uhm 2.4 runs for them , both struggling vs RHP and the bottom 2 offenses in day games vs quality SP. Although both SP seem able to allow runs in the day starts......8.5 does seem to high like bait....might have to lean OVER and guess Penny gets ripped and NY can feast on the so-so middle men LAD has...bring on Chan Ho Ho Park......

So Mets for me to avoid the sweep before they go HOME.........

Good stuff on the NYM/LAD matchup SN and tuck...I was leaning UNDER before...now me likes.

What scares me is Penny is RIPE for a beating he was shit at COL but lucked out again because of run support. His day splits arent very good and neither is his normal rest starts while Maine hasnt been going that deep into gams either and we could have the MEts pen for 3 innings here...gonna be close thinking at least 5-3 NYM...but no reason to put an 8.5 total here looking at the 1st 2 games...last night was 8.5 and Maine is muchbetter then Figuerora and Penny is better then Kuroda so this should be about 8 IMO...why the extra half I ask ???

Thanks Tuck interested to see it but one thing is I like NYM depth more then other years...hopefully Easley for Castillo ...and prefer Pagan over Chavez here just want Alou in there......

I was at a prominent Mets blog and read that it is very likely the Mets will be resting a number of regular players today.

Yep Alou and Delgado rested....Scheinder Out as well but Casanova is fine with me...Furcal out as well

Well despite the Mets watered down lineup I still love the situation as I truly believe Penny is due to get hit. Sure the replacements are downgrades but I like that they are LHB;s which are 317 so far vs him and lets be honest he has faced some good LHB but looking at those opposing lineups he also faced alot of slumping bats as well..

Huge game for them IMO.....and last year they were one of the best in day games and as I said previously there poor day splits I think are due to alot of early day games midweek at SHea where the wind is howling and the weather not so nice in April.....

Lineups came out and still BUYING on the LAD ML as it just gets cheaper and cheaper.....

So played NYM , sticking with Balt and took a 1 unit chance on that over 8 out WEST.....then parlayed the dogs with the overs think I took 1 dog @ +1.5 in the parlay cause I still got 10-1 payout....

anyway goota run out be back shortly ! BOL GO RUNS ! and DOGGIES

Mets up 11-0 b5th now need Orioles to get going down 1-0 top5th...and Reds cruise 9-0 that was sweet......

Wow , just saw what happened to Balt in the top 2nd and 4th terrible breaks and then we get a DP in the top 5th.....damn.....1st and 3rd no out ...nada and bases loaded 2 out...zip.....hate to see that not great omens......

SN...Thanks for persuading me to get off the LAD UNDER:cheers:

It just looked to easy bro...I dont do easy very well....I was pretty certain penny was due to get smoked and he did...wish I coulda got ya on the Mets though...just happy to have been helpful in a positive way.....

Really couldnt understand how that total was sitting at 8.5 ...I didnt play th eover though outside of including it in a parlay...

BOL:cheers:

I'll take down 3-2 @ oakland lets go Orioles..nice to see some clutch hitting by Balt and not watching but almost hate to read Hernandez ended the inning on a deep fly ball with 2 on base.....next two innings big for Balt top of the lineup for them.....

Would love a tie @ Oak ...down 4-2 top 7th...4 up gives me the over and even if the Orioles lose say by a run hopefully I would hit my 4 team parlay and still net 3 units...+5 for the parlay and -2 on the Orioles ML and I also would have won the over and NYM ML ...would be very happy with that

just got in

nut you were dead on about penny due to blow up today.

wow.

excellent call as usual. routine.

Thank You Cap . Obviously very happy now praying that Orioles can hold on. Would have loved to convince alot of the forum to stay away from LAD but not sure that happened..

So what are we thinking for 7 PM fellas??

LH vs LH in Pitt again with weaker stuff then yesterdays duo? EVerything I said for that over applies here again( just read the WED discussion thread or cut and paste here I am to lazy). SFG starting to hit LHP much better thanks to Aurilia's streak and Castillo's bat showing some life along with consistent vets Rowand and Molina but most especially as Rowand as Molina hasnt done much vs LH yet . Pirates are working LHP everytime out and only the UNDER the RADAR Odaliz Perez has keep them quiet . They have hit every LH late and for power as well...So tough to not like the over 9.5 and hard to see value in Pitt at -140 with Dumtrait even though there line scares me...Zito vs Dumtrait? Like I said to VK just know make this line in March and its SFG -140 probably not Pitt especially after the on slaught yesterday. Drake calls everything for a strike but it doesnt seem to matter much when looking at O/U records but he has been home biased 29-13 since 07 started....

Not crazy about NYY facing a LHP but wang at -140 at home. Tough to pass..2nd look at Wang coupled with Lee sort of playing illusionist dominanting weak hitting lineups who are even weaker vs LHP....over 8 ....feel like they are telling us to take that Over...

Dave Bush as road chalk is a SIN. Either Florida and Badenhop or pass. Remember last time out I said expect Badenhop to be better here as he was just in some tough spots previously...Brewers not hitting LH or RH lately if I recall correctly..like the pup.....

Det because of the sweep factor but its basically a coin flip...hot team vs cold ..rule book probably says ride the HOT team but not for me..not here...

Hudson looked like he got his acttogether after a 3 start slump that could have been illness or flu related....SD still not hitting much and for -160 like Bravos but not crazy about the price.......

Not sure I can back Garza here but feel like the play is TB even though I cant rationalize it.....but really hate that TB is now 4-0 vs Tor so probably pass .....

What is this crap ? This is Tim Hudson stats on 5 days or normal rest vs extended rest or greater then 5 days. The numbers directly above are 2008 see out whack he has been when he gets the ball every 6th day??

The rest of the stats starting with the top ones are 2007 also shoing a huge difference performance and below that would be 2006 and 2005.....

I want really sold on the UMP being an over guy but 59% is unheard of. I dismissed his 3 overs because we had an 8 total @ Coors with ZOna facing a LHP , then two blowouts with AAA SP Mendoza for Texas and DeLaRosa for COlorado.....and the rest unders with decent SP...but its not even about the UMP he is just the gravy I think.....

Wolf has long struggled vs ATL and while he has some decent performances vs them most are short lived 5+ or 6 innings which leaves the SD pen . Cameron is injured and Ledezma starting tmrw with germano I presume in the pen now.

Wolf is somewhat better himsel getting 6 days rest which he is here. So I wont touch ATL...even Hudson has been so-so vs SD in the past.....Wolf has really struggled vs ATL in the past...should have ent over yesterday and should today ......

Over 8.5

Tough loss on Balt 6-5 in 10 only good part was thanks to my bookie I lucked out and hit a 4 team parlay with both overs in LAD & Oak , Mets ML and +1.5 Balt RL..so lost 2 units on the ML but picked up 5 on the parlay...shit part is instead of +3 units I would have been +7. 30...

Played Over 8 @ NYY , Over 4.5 1st 5 Tor feels someone gets hit hard and 2 units over ATL so far...probably add NYY ML ...

SN...I'm expecting lots of runs in Zona tonite. Thanks for the heads up in Atlanta.

No prob . One of those last minute things . Certainly hope it works out ...thanks for the heads up . have hoops in 5 minutes so gotta check it when I come back home but will...

played a bunch of 1 unit plays on Det , Fla , TB and Ov 9 , NYY...parlayed Marlins - Under as well small...bunch of shit as usual:cheers:
