It's not just that Baron Davis is gone. Or that Monta Ellis is hurt.
When the lights dim Wednesday and the Warriors announce their opening night lineup, no amount of fireworks or drumming can cover up their biggest issue.

Starting at point guard will be an undrafted rookie shooting guard.
"Might tell you something about our team, huh?" coach Don Nelson said.
Whereas the Warriors once had Davis running the offense and once had visions of Ellis doing the same, the reality is that DeMarcus Nelson of Oakland by way of Vallejo will be the season-opening point guard.

It's an indication of how far Nelson, a two-guard at Duke, has come since training camp. And, of course, how far the Warriors have fallen since their 48-win campaign last season.

In a disastrous summer, Davis bolted for Los Angeles and Ellis injured himself in a moped accident. In between, the Warriors, rebuffed by Gilbert Arenas and Elton Brand, brought Corey Maggette on board.

With their point guard situation in disarray, half the rotation new and a bench with virtually no NBA experience, it's impossible to say what's in store for the Warriors this season - except for significantly lowered expectations.

"It's different," said Maggette, who remains a question mark for opening night due to a sore right hamstring. "Losing BD as well as Monta changes a lot of things. You're not as fast (offensively). It's going to be a slower pace. The style is going to be different than what you're accustomed to."
In other words, the run-and-gun show that made the Warriors so compelling is transitioning into the "green and growing" show, as Don Nelson termed it.

Stephen Jackson is the self-acknowledged team leader, and at 30, he's also their oldest player. Only two others are over 25 - Al Harrington and Maggette are both 28 - and it will be up to the veteran trio to groom their understudies.

While swingman Kelenna Azubuike and center Ronny Turiaf provide tested help, the rest the Warriors' rotation is severely lacking.
Brandan Wright is the de facto backup at power forward, but he hardly played as a rookie last year. Shooting guard Marco Belinelli is the king of summer league, but he hasn't dethroned anyone on a regular-season NBA court. Rookie Anthony Randolph has future star written all over him, but he presently is glued to the bench.

It's why Don Nelson is going with the less-is-more attitude. Offensive sets have been simplified or cut out altogether. Only about half the offense is in, and the coach doesn't expect to install more than 75 percent of what he had planned.

"Try to cut to the chase and run things that we know are successful. Stay away from a lot of the other stuff that take a long time to learn," Nelson said.

Jackson, Harrington and Maggette will be the go-to trio, and one eventually will have to take the place of Davis when it comes to taking the final shot with the game on the line.

Nelson also wants to make center Andris Biedrins, who led the league in field goal percentage last year, into a bigger offensive force.

But for the Warriors to stay in any sort of playoff contention while Ellis is out - he will miss at least the first 30 games - their biggest improvements will have to come defensively.

Nelson said the Warriors averaged a 59 rating during the preseason, with a score in the 60s considered good. Again, they'll rely on rotating and switching coverages, particularly when Jackson slides over to the point. Turiaf adds beef in the frontcourt, and Wright and Randolph give the Warriors' some rangy shot-blockers.

That's assuming, though, that the youngsters will be set to go.
"Who's going to be ready when the lights come on?" Jackson said. "It's easy to play in the preseason, easy to play in scrimmages, but at 7:30, 7 o'clock, we're going to find out who comes ready to play. And that's going to be the tale of our season."

like me my hornets, we were an excellent road team last year plus the guy who killed us on the warriors was a guy named MONTA and BD was pretty ridiculous vs us at times last year. Monta was a complete mismatch for us and the others aren't so much so 4.5 seems short
