Utah Utes analysis

Two Utes

Manual Toothbrushes FTW
The last future I saw was o/u 4.5 but heavily juiced. I'm hoping the juice drops as I see this squad winning 6-7 games this year in spite of the tough schedule. The last two years have been injury ridden and a major injury could hurt them. However, this is the first time in forever that they have had depth at QB.....this team is going bowling.

They will be a live dog in PAC 12 play this year as well. I'm a homer but this is the most optimistic I've been about this team since in a few years. They also got rid of some dead weight coaches and with Dave Christensen running the offense this year, I expect more points to help their already good defense.

Can't wait for CFB to start.

Good shit. You think they unload on Idaho St in week 1?

That I do. You will see Kendall Thompson in mop-up duty 2h IMHO. Ken Scott healthy at WR again and Devontae Booker at RB this year is going to make some noise. You never know with first games so tread lightly but I don't know how ISU can score.

Gionni Paul, Miami transfer will miss the first few games due to injury but when he's back the defense gets that much better. They lost Reggie Porter(CB) in camp this year which is a shame....reports said he was the best CB by a mile. Tevin Carter(Cal transfer) has been nursing an injury but he will be a ball-hawk at safety this year as well. I may be totally off base but this team was close with a shit offense last year and they will score points this year.

Thanks. A friend of mine attended the Crimson Club luncheon today and said that Kyle Whittingham couldn't quit talking about Kendal Thompson's athletic ability and they showed a lot of highlights on him. He said that Travis Wilson barely beat him out for the starting spot. My friend seems to think that if Thompson gets some PT and gets the team to rally around him that you might see him as the starting QB sooner rather than later.

Tim Patrick is a very late addition and a highly sought after WR. Apparently he had a huge hole to dig out of at his JC and most of the PAC 12 quit recruiting him, Utah didn't. He pulled a rabbit out of his hat and got his AA so he stayed loyal to Utah. He had a huge camp. 6'5" about 215 and runs like a deer. He was 5'11" in HS so he's got the moves of a smaller, slot receiver but in a 6'5" frame now.

I will add any other injury, players moving up, and thoughts in this thread as we go.

GL to everyone this year.

Thanks for input Utes. I saw them as a 5 win team (and my book has 5 over -120). That conference is baffling to me though so 6 or 7 would not surprise me.

Utes where do you see them finishing in the Pac 12 South, cause I don't see them finishing higher than 5th. Last year they had 5 conference home games while this year Utah only gets 4, and in 2013 Utah went 3-0 in non-conference....with a trip to the Big House I think 2-1 to begin the season is a safe bet. I don't see any more than 3 wins in conference for a 5-7 finish.

I can see over 4.5 but I just don't see a bowl game on the horizon.

C-Man, 5 is definitely possible but as you said this is a baffling conference. I think this is a 6 win team.

AK, I think 4th. The UM game is a toss-up, if they win that one they will gain a lot of confidence going into conference play. I see them being strong at home, losing only to the Ducks. I also see them beating CU on the road to wind up 6-6. There could be a surprise win or loss either way but 6-6 is where I see this team finishing.

A few updates....

Domo Hatfield was moved to corner for FSU game from WR and after 1 week of practice he got the start over Orphey. He's athletic and is a natural there, our CB play got a huge upgrade moving him over. Justin Thomas was back at nickel against FSU as well which was another big help for the D.

Jason Whittingham has a broken wrist and will not be playing this week from what I hear. Kyle Whittingham is more tight lipped than our government when it comes to injuries so this isn't a for sure thing but I'm 99% certain that he's out. However, Gionni Paul will likely be seeing his first action since breaking his foot in spring camp and he will be a HUGE upgrade at the Mike.

Nate Orchard will likely be all PAC 12 at D end this year but they have been putting some packages in that move him to OLB, he will create some match-up nightmares for UM. The team is coming off of a bye and Whittingham said they are downplaying this as a big game, doesn't want players with too much pressure. Told them they will have bigger games come PAC 12 play. That being said, they will be getting into Ann Arbor on Thurs and will practice there Friday which will include a walk through at the stadium.

Utes will be up for this game, they have played two very poor teams so far so it's truly hard to know how good they are. Travis Wilson has been lights out so far and Thurm Thompson has played great in mop-up duty. I wish I could have got the open at 7.

Feels like one of those public dog situations that would keep me up at night as utes fan or backer...

Not sure I follow, too much love for the Utes? I could definitely see them losing this game as this is by far the most talent they have faced this year. That's why I'm a little hesitant to get on this one so far. First road game and travel as well.
