Nogueira vs. Mir, Griffin vs. Evans, Jackson vs. Silva at UFC 92

As recently as Monday, UFC president Dana White said there were "lots of moving parts" as he tried to complete the company's end-of-year fight cards.

On Wednesday, he at least got the top three fights of UFC 92 finalized.

The co-main events will feature the interim heavyweight title match between champion Antonio Rodrigo and Frank Mir. Forrest Griffin will defend the light heavyweight title against Rashad Evans and Quinton "Rampage" Jackson will meet Wanderlei Silva, who defeated him twice when they fought in PRIDE.

The Jackson-Silva card had been considered for UFC 91, when the card was slated to be in Portland, Ore., as well for UFC 94, which will be Jan. 31 in Las Vegas.

But White said he wanted to "stack" the UFC's traditional New Year's Eve weekend card and managed to do so by putting four of the company's most popular fighters on the card.

The UFC has officially moved the fight card across Las Vegas Blvd. from Mandalay Bay to the MGM Grand Garden.

Jackson will be fighting for the first time since losing the light heavyweight belt to Griffin at UFC 86 on July 5 and a bizarre traffic incident on July 15 in suburban Los Angeles. Jackson was driving on the wrong side of the road and on sidewalks and fled even while being chased by police.

He was charged with two felonies and three misdemeanors and has pled not guilty. He has a Nov. 3 court appearance scheduled.

White has said no drugs or alcohol were involved and that Jackson's actions were fueled by "delirium" caused by days of little sleep, little food and water and excessive intake of energy drinks.

haven't looked at the odds yet, but i too like evans and silva... also like big nog and cb to fill out the main card...

rampage's mental status is a big question mark to me....

not sure if his incident was more a one time thing or something that has built up a bit and then unleashed.... gotta wonder if the incident has played any role in how hard he's training for the fight...

How is the Dollaway/Massenzio on the main card over Lister/Okami?

Rampage might get owned again b Silva...not sure if his mental status is up to par yet AND given the fact that Silva has beaten twice in Pride.

what a badass card. can't fucking wait.

and yea, dollaway over lister/okami on the main card?!:4_12_12:

i bet nog gets kneebarred and then saved by the bell in round 1 then pull an out of nowhere armbar with 10 seconds left in rnd 5...

i might add massenzio because i think he has a small edge in all departments against dollaway

idk, i think dolla's got better wrestling (dolla beat mass in college wrestling) but who knows dollaway's got this bad habit of leaving his arm out

yah doll did beat him and then they didnt get a rematch the next year cuz doll got beat and then massenzio beat the guy that beat doll... this has a bit of a revenge angle on it

I'll be fully involved tonight. Breaking it down this afternoon as best I can... Where are Bluechip and Sammy?

UFC 92 weigh-ins - An MMAjunkie.com photo gallery

looks like a bit of a scuffle went down with
The Axe Murderer pushing Rampage..... this one will be a helluva fight!!!!! :box:

UFC 92 official weigh-in results

LAS VEGAS - MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) was on scene for today's "UFC 92: The Ultimate 2008" weigh-ins at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

UFC light heavyweight champion Forrest Griffin and challenger Rashad Evans weighed in, as did UFC interim heavyweight title-holder Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and opponent Frank Mir.

Rivals Wanderlei Silva and Quinton "Rampage" Jackson did not disappoint any fans expecting fireworks. With the staredowns every bit as intense as one could hope for, a small push from Jackson resulted in a two-handed shove to the chest by Silva in retaliation. The crowd went nuts, the opponents were separated, and both fighters left on opposite sides of the stage.

Today's weigh-ins preceded Saturday's year-end pay-per-view event for the UFC. With perhaps the year's deepest fight card, two title fights and a small army of notables, UFC 92 promises to be one of the year's top events.

The full weigh-in results included:

MAIN CARD

 • Champ Forrest Griffin (205) vs. Rashad Evans (203)
 • Champ Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira (246) vs. Frank Mir (251)
 • Quinton Jackson (206) vs. Wanderlei Silva (203)
 • Mustafa Al-Turk (237) vs. Cheick Kongo (233)
 • C.B. Dollaway (186) vs. Mike Massenzio (184)
PRELIMINARY CARD

 • Antoni Hardonk (246) vs. Mike Wessel (260)
 • Reese Andy (206) vs. Matt Hamill (205)
 • Brad Blackburn (170) vs. Ryo Chonan (171)
 • Patrick Barry (233) vs. Dan Evensen (242)

Performify's Picks for UFC 92

What a great event to wrap up 2008. UFC 92 puts two separate titles on the line with Forrest Griffin vs. Rashad Evans for the UFC light heavyweight title and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira vs. Frank Mir for the interim UFC heavyweight title.

Rounding out the card is a legendary third fight between Quinton Jackson and Wanderlei Silva, predicted by many to be the odds-on favorite for Fight of the Night"honors.

As an MMA fan, I find it hard not to love UFC 92. As an MMA gambler, however, I am a lot less excited.

Results of 4-2 +2.54 units from UFC 91 brings the running total for my public predictions since UFC 75 to 64-49 for +28.625 units.

As usual, except where otherwise indicated, all lines are current market lines from MMAjunkie.com's recommended sportsbook, Bodog. It's easy to open an account at Bodog, and you can fund your Bodog account with as little as $25 and bet as little as $1 on fights. Until you've experienced the added excitement of betting on MMA, you really haven't watched MMA. Having your heart race when "your" fighter steps into the cage -- even if you've only got a few dollars in play -- is a feeling like none other. (But you should only wager you'd feel comfortable losing. Keep it fun.)

I am recommending a bet on only one fight on this card, and that fight is Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira (-350) vs. Frank Mir (+275).

In a MMA career spanning 36 fights and more than nine years, Nogueira (31-4-1 MMA, 2-0 UFC) has decisively lost to only one fighter: Fedor Emelianenko, who is almost universally regarded as the best heavyweight in the world. Emelianenko defeated Nogueira twice, both times by unanimous decision, first at PRIDE 25 in early 2003 and later at PRIDE Shockwave 2004.

Nogueira also has two close split-decision losses on his record. Both were to world-class fighters, and both were subsequently avenged. Nogueira suffered a split-decision loss to Josh Barnett (widely regarded as one of the top heavyweights in the world) at PRIDE Final Conflict Absolute in 2006, which he avenged barely three months later at PRIDE Shockwave 2006. Nogueira also suffered a split-decision loss to Dan Henderson early in his career (in the Japanese organization RINGS back in 2000). Nogueira avenged the loss almost three years later by defeating Henderson via armbar submission at PRIDE 24.

On the other hand, Mir's 14-fight career is a mixed bag of results. Mir (11-3 MMA, 9-3 UFC) opened his UFC career with quick first-round submissions over Roberto Traven and Pete Williams at UFC 34 and UFC 36, respectively. Mir was then decisively beaten in his "prime" at UFC 38 by heavy underdog Ian Freeman, who held a 12-5 MMA record at the time. Mir rebounded with a quick first-round submission over Tank Abbott (8-7 at the time) at UFC 41 and a KO win over Wes Sims at UFC 46.

Mir next won his most famous fight by breaking Tim Sylvia's arm in only 50 seconds at UFC 48 to win the UFC's heavyweight title. However, it's worth noting that Sylvia's arm break was very anomalous; Sylvia actually escaped Mir's early armbar attempt, successfully pulling his elbow joint out of the hold. Mir continued to crank the hold even though Sylvia escaped, and Sylvia's forearm snapped under the pressure. Typically it is unlikely that this type of breakage occurs once the opponent has escaped. So given that the fight lasted only 50 seconds and ended by what can accurately be categorized as a bit of a freak ending, it is hard to take a lot from this fight as a handicapper.

After the win over Sylvia, Mir was sidelined for 18 months due to his infamous motorcycle accident. After returning from the accident, Mir lost to Márcio Cruz (4-2 MMA, 2-2 UFC) at UFC 57 and then won a close 29-28 unanimous decision victory over Dan Christison (13-6 MMA, 1-1 UFC) at UFC 62 before losing via brutal knockout to Brandon Vera at UFC 65. Mir rebounded by defeating Antoni Hardonk (7-4 MMA, 3-2 UFC) via quick submission at UFC 74 and then the slightly controversial submission victory over Brock Lesnar at UFC 81.

With all due respect to both competitors, in my opinion, Nogueira is another class of competitor compared to Mir. Nogueira has faced world-class competition, has been competitive in two fights against Emelianenko, and has several legitimate wins over serious competition such as Barnett, Heath Herring, Fabricio Werdum, Sylvia and Mark Coleman (still near his prime in 2001). Mir, on the other hand, has losses to a few fighters not regarded as "top tier" MMA competitors, and his most notable wins are both slightly freak endings, which included snapping Sylvia's arm and grabbing Lesnar's leg after a controversial restart.

Nogueira is well rounded with solid boxing and an iron chin on top of a world-class jiu-jitsu game. He is notable for absorbing a lot of punishment early in fights but being almost impossible to put away; he's won many fights with late submissions after being behind in early rounds. Mir is much more one-dimensional and highly dependant upon his BJJ skills to finish fights. Mir has a notoriously limited gas tank and has generally struggled anytime he has gone outside the first round of a fight. In a five-round championship fight against the very tough and well-rounded Nogueira, I expect Mir to be competitive early in the fight, but it is highly unlikely he can submit someone as skilled as Nogueira early, and it is very unlikely that Mir can hang with "Big Nog" on the feet.

As such, I expect this to be a significantly one-sided affair with Nogueira dominating the fight after the first round and winning either via TKO or submission late in the fight against a battered and exhausted Mir. The win will earn Nogueira the right to face off against Brock Lesnar in 2009 to unify the two heavyweight titles.

Of course, this is MMA, and as we all know, anything can happen in a fight. Despite my assertion that Nogueira should dominate this fight, it is not to say that Mir has no chance at all. The current betting line of -350 assigns Nogueira approximately a 78% chance of victory. I believe that Mir has approximately only a 10 percent chance of victory, and as such the current betting line is worth a strong play. My public pick is betting Nogueira for 10.5 units to win 3 units, and that will be my only public pick for this card.

Assuming the line continues to move as money continues to come in on Nogueira, I am comfortable betting "Big Nog" for a single unit up to -550 and for two units up to -425.

While the rest of the card presents several amazing matches from a fan's perspective, I believe the other fights are not attractive enough to warrant a bet. Here is a quick look at the rest of the lines:

Forrest Griffin (-125) vs. Rashad Evans (-105)

I have a small play on Rashad Evans at positive numbers from the opening line, but I do not like either side at these odds. I think this fight is a true coin flip.

C.B. Dollaway (-165) vs. Mike Massenzio (+135)

This is well-set line by the oddsmakers. Massenzio's extensive BJJ skills present a dangerous matchup for Dollaway, but the line is not attractive enough to represent a great edge in my opinion.

Quinton Jackson (+110) vs. Wanderlei Silva (-140)

While Silva is 2-0 against Jackson from their days in PRIDE, there is too much unknown with both fighters for me to be comfortable here. Concerns about Silva's age and conditioning are balanced against concerns about Jackson's focus in the wake of his highly publicized legal issues. I think a focused and well-trained Jackson would easily beat Silva here since Jackson had improved markedly since his days in PRIDE. Silva, meanwhile, is on the downside of his legendary career. But it is impossible to know how focused and prepared Jackson will actually be in this fight, and so I'm staying away from a public prediction.

Cheick Kongo (-325) vs. Mustapha Al Turk (+250)

No insight except to say I hope this fight ends quickly, enabling the broadcast of one of the fights I consider much more entertaining from the undercard.

Matt Hamill (-525) vs. Reese Andy (+325)

Most are giving the former IFL fighter little chance against Hamill, and it is hard to argue. No reason to bet Hamill due to the one-sided odds and (again) the larger edge in the Nogueira vs. Mir fight.

Ryo Chonan (-170) vs. Brad Blackburn (+140)

PRIDE and DEEP veteran Chonan (15-8 MMA, 1-1 UFC) should be able to impose his will on journeyman veteran Brad Blackburn (15-9 MMA, 1-0 UFC). However, this line is appropriately set in my opinion, and I'll be risking my money elsewhere.

Yushin Okami (-350) vs. Dean Lister (+275)

An interesting fight since Okami's strength (his excellent top game) puts him inside Lister's comfort area. Lister is so one-dimensional that Okami's significant edge in wrestling will most likely be able to keep the fight standing, making this look a lot like the one-sided beatdown of Lister vs. Nate Marquardt from UFC Fight Night 8. Still, I think the Nogueira vs. Mir fight presents a much stronger edge and results in a pass for this fight.

Dan Evensen (+185) vs. Pat Barry (-225)

Barry is a dynamic kickboxer who trains with the legendary Ernesto Hoost, and he should be able to score a dynamic knockout over Evensen. Still, better opportunity with the Mir vs. Nogueira line.

Antoni Hardonk (-365) vs. Mike Wessel (+285)

Wessel (8-1 MMA, 0-0 UFC) replaced Mark Burch (9-2 MMA, 0-0 UFC) only a couple weeks ago for this fight with Hardonk (7-4 MMA, 3-2 UFC). He's highly athletic and will have great conditioning, and if not for the short notice he would be a solid upset pick in my opinion. However, on two weeks' notice, it's hard to pick a UFC rookie against a veteran like Hardonk.

Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira (-375) vs. Frank Mir (+305)

When I first heard of this fight, I wondered what Mir did to deserve such a fight. Beating Hardonk and Lesnar gets you title shots these days? Then, Lesnar fought for the title...and somehow Mir's shot seemed so much more legit. Nogueira is probably the most decorated heavyweight ever. Fedor is the best right now, but no one in MMA has fought more top level competition than Nogueira. No one has won a title in PRIDE and then won one in the UFC. If Fedor didn't exist and Nogueira didn't have those losses, Nogueira would be considered the pound for pound king of MMA. Mir himself is a former UFC heavyweight champion, but it's hard for anyone to compare themselves to Nogueira's credentials. It's been about 9 months since either of these guys has fought (UFC 81,) where Mir beat Lesnar and Nogueira won the interim title against Tim Sylvia.

Nog.png

Nogueira has to be the favorite in this fight. It isn't about being biased or choosing sides, but just looking at what each guy has done, it's clear why the odds favor Nogueira. Mir is known to get tired a lot, and many have questioned his dedication to the sport. A lot of people use Mir's accident as an excuse, but what was the excuse when Mir was gassing against Wes Simms or when he got beat down by Ian Freeman? This fight is much more important, so I believe Mir will prepare a bit better. When I picked Mir to beat Lesnar I said Mir would be in shape. The fight didn't last long so we can never really know if that's true, but I do believe Mir has rededicated himself. I don't think Mir's re-dedication will matter in this fight, though. You can't dedicate yourself to a sport 50 percent of the time. Nogueira has come prepared every fight. Even when he's getting head-kicked by Cro Cop and Herring, when he's getting dropped with punches from Fedor and Sylvia, he was able to come back. A person with consistent dedication and consistent conditioning can do that. Mir looked in great shape when he fought Vera, but he got punched in the face and folded. Being in shape is one thing, but being in shape and having to deal with adversity is another. Nogueira has seen the worse and knows how to deal with it. Mir hasn't dealt with those things or show Nogueira anything he hasn't seen.

The submission skills of Mir and Nogueira is a hotly debated topic these days. To put it simply...Nogueira is the better submission fighter. That doesn't mean Mir can't submit him, but Nogueira is better. Mir has admitted to it himself. The argument that most people use for Mir is that he submitted Roberto Traven. Most people don't realize that Mir had about a 40 pound weight advantage, and that Traven never did anything in MMA. Can anyone tell me what Traven has done lately? What titles does Traven hold in MMA? People also say that Mir is better because Nogueira can't submit top level submission fighters. Who has submitted Barnett and Werdum in MMA? I don't see Nog's inability to finish such good fighters as a bad thing. What we do know is that Nogueira did manage to out-grapple both of them. He had submission attempts and sweeps against both guys. How would Mir do against those guys? The Roberto Traven argument is really a weak one. I compare it to Jorge Gurgel and Matt Serra. Great submission guys outside of MMA, but who have they submitted in MMA? Mir submitting Traven, who looked scared for his life, doesn't mean much to me. Mir almost getting arm-barred by Dan Christison means a lot to me, though. Mir was out of shape for that one, but was still pretty bad. Nogueira has the submission edge.

I believe Nogueira has the edge in most of the other areas too. Mir is a better kicker, but he's no better at kicking than Herring or Cro Cop. I also think Mir might have a wrestling advantage, but I'm not totally convinced. Mir might take Nogueira down, but that's because Nogueira doesn't care if he's on his back. Nogueira can take Mir down pretty easily too when he wants. The better striker in this fight will be Nogueira. Like I said, Mir might be the better kicker but he won't be effective with them. Nogueira has an underrated boxing game, and he will outbox Mir if they stay on the feet. Vera's boxing is unimpressive, and he destroyed Mir with his hands. Nogueira can do much of the same, but it might take a bit longer because Nogueira isn't known for his power. Herring is a much better striker than Mir I believe, and Nogueira gave him a boxing lesson (except for the headkick). All the other things like cardio, heart, mental strength go to Nogueira. No one has ever broken Nogueira's will, no one! I have a hard time believing Mir will be the one to do it. Mir is simply outmatched in this fight. If there was one fight I had to bet my life on, this would be the one. Mir winning would be a HUGE upset. Mir's only chance is to somehow grab a submission and crank it like his life depended on it. He won't knock Nogueira out and he won't decision him. Nogueira has Mir's number and will always have it. So much for Mir being 200 times the athlete.

Rashad Evans (even)vs. Forrest Griffin (-130)

TUF 1 winner, Forrest Griffin, will make his first title defense against TUF 2 winner, Rashad Evans. I will say that I give Forrest a lot of credit because I really thought he had no chance against Rampage. I still don't think he did enough to win the title (I had it as a draw), but I didn't think he'd make it past the second round, so I was definitely impressed. I have to say the same about Rashad. Rashad seemed to be the the perfect guy for Chuck to knock out and get back into title contention, but it was Chuck who got knocked out. It wasn't just a normal knockout either.

RashadEvansChuck.png

It was something that made you concerned for the guy who got put down, just a very brutal knock out where you didn't expect it to happen the way it did. Rashad displayed his striking skills and quickness in that fight, he never even tried for a takedown. These are two guys I thought I'd never see in this situation, so a lot of respect to them. Forrest isn't getting an easy first title defense here, Rashad definitely presents a lot of problems. I think this fight will be a bit more competitive than the other title fight on this card. I'm looking forward to it.

Each guy has strengths, but they also have their flaws. I think the fighter who exploits the other's flaws will be the winner. For Forrest, his wrestling defense, punching power, and chin are a bit questionable. I don't like bringing up a guys chin usually because it seems like a bit of a cop out to me at times, but Forrest has himself said his chin isn't as good as he once thought it was. At the same time, though, Forrest took some big shots from Rampage and kept on coming. Forrest is definitely a tough guy and comes in great condition, but his chin is a bit questionable. Rashad has been very inconsistent in my eyes. One day guys like Chuck Liddell can't touch Rashad, but on other days you see Rashad struggling to takedown someone like Michael Bisping, and he looked pretty gassed in that fight too. I also don't think Rashad showed up to the best of his ability when he fought Tito. Rashad's conditioning and consistency is definitely a question in this fight. Rashad will be the much better wrestler, but Forrest will make him work for takedowns as Bisping did. Who knows if Rashad will even try for takedowns.

Rashad's speed could become a factor in this fight, and his patience. We almost never see Chuck chase guys down, but Chuck was chasing Rashad. Rashad wanted no part of Chuck's counter-fighting style so he opted to wait it out instead. We saw what Rashad was able to counter effectively whenever Chuck attacked, and much of that was because of Rashad's movement and speed. Forrest has become much more of a stick and move fighter as of late. He isn't trying to brawl it out, he's picking his shots and allowing them to add up. I question if that will work against Rashad because Rashad's speed and countering could give Forrest problems. I don't think Rashad will be the one going forward in this fight, he's willing to hang back and let Forrest do his thing, he'll try to counter from there. One of the reasons I thought Rampage beat Forrest was because Rampage was able to slip a lot of Forrest's punches, and I believe Rashad will be able to do much of the same. I see Forrest having a very hard time landing real effective shots on Rashad. I'm not sure if Rashad will even attempt many takedowns in this fight. Rashad should be feeling confident and comfortable with his striking game after what he did to Chuck. Rashad might try to score some takedowns at the end of rounds to solidify rounds or potentially steal rounds. I really don't think Rashad will mess around on the ground too much. I think he's capable, but Forrest isn't too shabby off his back.

I think this fight comes down to which Rashad shows up. If the Rashad that fought Chuck shows up, I really have no doubt he'd win. If the one that fought Michael Bisping shows up...it could be a long night. I don't see Forrest being able to finish this fight. His style, as of late, doesn't lend itself towards finishing fights. Forrest likes to strike mostly, and he doesn't have enough power to finish guys, it seems. Rashad would have to gas out completely and just give up a submission for Forrest to finish, like with the Shogun fight. It seems like Forrest's weaknesses are Rashad's strengths. Forrest is a guy who doesn't have the best wrestling or chin, and Rashad is a guy who can wrestle and has shown power. Forrest will be a bit bigger so that could become a factor, but I don't see that being a problem. Rashad fought huge heavyweights when he was new to the game, so this won't be new to him. I like Rashad's chances to knock Forrest out within three rounds. If it goes more than three rounds, Forrest has a better chance of winning. Rashad being able to train with someone who beat Forrest will be key, as it was against Chuck. Rashad will be a bit more prepared, he'll be in a top form, and I like him to finish the fight in this one.

Quinton Jackson (-110)vs. Wanderlei Silva (-120)

WandyRampage.png

These guys have some history. Wanderlei not only beat Rampage once with his brutal knees, he did it twice in PRIDE. A lot of people debated the first fight, saying Rampage had the tougher fight that same night against Chuck Liddell, and many people thought the ref stood them up too quickly when Rampage had top position. There really weren't any excuses in the second meeting, though. Wanderlei knocked Rampage out in the rematch and almost sent him out of the ring in the process. Rampage has seemed like the more improved fighter since the days of PRIDE, but Wanderlei could just be that guy that Rampage may never beat. Styles make fights as they say, and this could be the fight that Rampage can't overcome. You also have to consider Rampage's recent legal troubles and the fallout with his former trainer. The switch of camps and the current situation might not be the best timing for a showdown with someone like Wanderlei. Rampage has had more success in the UFC, beating Chuck for the title and defending it against Henderson. Wanderlei dropped a fight to Chuck, but came back in old form against Jardine. We'll find out where Rampage is mentally and if his skills have come far enough to deal with Wanderlei.

This is a very tough fight to pick for me. It's hard to go with Rampage just because of what Wanderlei did in the past, but at the same time Rampage has really improved. His boxing is much better, his defense, his footwork...everything has improved. To me, it looked like Rampage wasn't at his best against Forrest. His hands didn't look as crisp as usual and his timing looked a bit off, it seemed like the layoff messed his game up a bit. The change of trainers could also effect this fight because we don't know if that has thrown his game off at all. When Rampage fought Forrest he never seemed to turn the switch on, which could be an issue against someone as aggressive as Wanderlei. Although Rampage has improved his boxing, he's still a bit of a brawler. He likes to get in close and wing big hooks, just look at how he fought Henderson. Those guys just threw bombs at each other whenever they exchanged. If Rampage does that with Wanderlei it might end up badly for him. Rampage has a slightly better chin, but Wanderlei has great recovery and has already withstood Rampage's punches. Wanderlei has taken shots from Mark Hunt, Liddell, and Rampage before and still kept going. If they get into an exchange where they're throwing crazy bombs, I'd have to give the advantage to Wanderlei. That's the kind of fight Wanderlei wants, that's what he tries to bait guys into doing.

I don't see too much ground work going on in this fight. I think Rampage might take it there a few times, but I don't see it staying there for long. Rampage does have the ability to take Wanderlei down and work some ground and pound, where he can score some points. This may very well be the type of fight where Rampage could be up on the score cards due to the difference in takedowns, but you can't try to win decisions against someone like Wanderlei. I'm not saying I think Rampage will fight for the decision, I just don't see him finishing the fight on the ground. I don't think Wanderlei will be throwing up too many submissions from his back. He has the ability to do so and he has attempted them on Rampage in the past, but I think he'll be much more defensive than offensive on his back if it does go to the ground. Elbows will be something both guys can now use, and that favors Rampage a bit. The UFC rules, in general, favor Rampage. The octagon, the round lengths, unified rules, pretty much everything. Rampage doesn't have to worry about getting kneed or stomped on the ground anymore. He doesn't have to endure the grueling 10 minute first round. He doesn't have to worry about being trapped in corners, the octagon is much bigger and leaves much more room to work in. Rampage still has to worry about the Thai clinch, though.

We'll find out if Rampage is ready for the clinch this time. No one in the UFC has really attempted to use a Thai clinch on Rampage yet. Forrest attempted it, but the knees he seemed pretty weak and unimpressive. They seemed to be all legs and no hip. Henderson was pretty successful with the greco clinch, but that's a bit different. I don't feel comfortable picking Rampage because of his current situation. Rampage has the ability to win, but I don't like this being his first fight back. I don't like that he's with an all new camp and fighting a guy who's beaten him twice already. I don't like that he did his whole training camp in London for this fight. Wanderlei and Forrest have probably sparred many times to prepare for the fights they both have upcoming, and they have both experienced battle with Rampage before. I wouldn't know who to pick in this fight under normal circumstances, and even now it's tough to pick a winner. I have to lean towards Wanderlei just because of the situation each guy is in. Wanderlei is comfortable where he is at this point in time, and he's coming off a devastating knockout win. Rampage doesn't have those same benefits right now. I'm a fan of both guys so I'd like to see Rampage prove me wrong, but Wanderlei will take him out for the third time. Rampage will stay competitive early on and maybe even be ahead, but Wanderlei will catch him late in the fight. Expect one of the best stare-downs ever right before the fight.

Yushin Okami (-400) vs. Dean Lister (+320)

Okami should really be he next guy to fight Anderson Silva, but he'll have to get through Dean Lister now. Okami was supposed to face Silva at UFC 90, but a hand injury forced him off. Before all that, Okami knocked out Evan Tanner. Dean Lister was able to submit and finish Jeremy Horn in his last outing. Lister was having a tough time finishing people for awhile it seemed, but maybe he's more comfortable at 185 and more comfortable in the UFC now. Lister is one of the best submission guys in the world, but he hasn't really been able to transfer those skills to MMA yet. He seems like he doesn't like to strike very much and he doesn't like to get hit, and his takedowns are not very good. I'm sure he's working on those things, but getting Okami down will prove to be a big problem. Okami is one of the strongest middleweights in the game, and Lister has never shown spectacular takedowns. Okami isn't known to be an amazing striker, but I think he can handle Lister on the feet. Okami will be able to bully him around in the clinch and land some good knees like he did against Tanner.

I see this fight going like Lister's fight with Marquardt. Marquardt was able to beat Lister up on the feet and do some good damage from the top position. He would never stay on the ground for long, Marquardt would just back out. Okami will be able to do much of the same to Lister. Okami controls where the fight goes. If he wants to strike, they'll strike. If Okami wants to take Lister down, he can take him down. What happens in this fight is really dependant on Okami. As mentioned earlier, Lister has a great ground game, but it has never transferred to MMA. Adding punches really does add a whole new dimension to the game and Lister hasn't been able to adapt to that new dimension. Lister wasn't able to finish Jordan Radev...that seems to be a bit of a problem to me. Even if Lister somehow gets on top, and that's a big if, I don't think he'll be able to finish someone like Okami. He did finish Horn, but Horn is beginning to seem like a worn out fighter. Everything seems to point to an Okami victory for me, probably a decision. He's too big, too strong, and just has the right style to negate Lister. Lister needs to get on top to win, which he won't do. We might see Lister try to pull guard a few times and Okami might play in there for a bit, but he won't stay for long. Okami will be able to beat Lister up for all three rounds.

Cheick Kongo -305 vs. Mustapha Al-Turk +245

This will be one of the upset picks for me. Kongo has had some big wins in the UFC, but I really don't know if he should ever be favored when fighting a wrestler who has good ground-n-pound with a sense of ground positioning. Kongo is a big guy, but his takedown defense is probably the worst in the heavyweight division. It almost seems like Kongo's upper body is so big it plays as a disadvantage to him. He has stick legs so when he tries to sprawl it has no effectiveness to it, and he hasn't learned how to drop his hips when sprawling. It's a toss up between Herring and Kongo between the worst wrestling in the division I'd say. Herring was able to get on top of Kongo and do some things, and he said that he basically did no ground preparation at all for that fight. Assuerio Silva basically just picked Kongo up like a child and took Kongo down anytime he wanted, but it seemed Silva had no idea how to apply any type of submission from side control, so he ended up losing a decision. Same goes for Carmelo Marrero (who now fights at 205). He was able to take Kongo down at will and get the decision win. I think the UFC is trying to build Kongo up and get him a win here, but Al-Turk isn't some random guy from England like Dan Evensen. Al-Turk has legit skills, and I believe he can take Kongo down if he wants to, which he should do.

Kongo is a great striker. He was able to handle Cro Cop on the feet and use his size to bully him around, but Mirko is a guy who Kongo knew would stand. Mirko was also a guy who weighed around 220 and Kongo was able to use his size and cage experience to bully Cro Cop around. That won't be the case with Al-Turk. I believe Al-Turk weighs around 240, so he'll actually weigh more and he has fought mostly in Cage Rage which uses a cage. Even when this fight is standing, I don't see it as a huge threat. Kongo is a very good striker, but he really doesn't hit very hard. He has good knees and that's really about it when it comes to power. When Heath Herring can take someone down, there's a big problem. Al-Turk isn't known, but he has the style to beat Kongo up. Kongo hasn't fought anyone who can really threaten him with ground and pound, Al-Turk is that guy. I really don't think there's guys at Wolf's Lair that can prepare Kongo to defend takedowns. There weren't guys who could prepare Kongo for that when he trained in Big Bear, so I don't think it'll happen in England where the wrestling is a bit weaker than it is here. If I see a guy fighting Kongo and I have no idea who the hell he is, but I know he has some wrestling, I'd probably bet on him if the price was right. The images of Herring taking Kongo down will never escape my mind. Al-Turk has all the skills to beat Kongo.

Mike Massenzio +130 vs. C.B. Dollaway -160

These two guys have met before. Dollaway beat Massenzio in the JUCO Finals during their days of wrestling, and I'm sure Massenzio wants revenge. This isn't the first time Dollaway will rematch and old wrestling foe, he also beat Jesse Taylor in their collegiate wrestling days and then went on to submit him in the UFC. I'm not sure if Dollaway will submit Massenzio, but I do favor him in this fight. He has a slight edge in every area of the game. He was able to edge Massenzio out in wrestling back in the day, and I think he'll edge Massenzio out in submissions and striking. Obviously that wrestling match was a long time ago, but Dollaway has shown great takedowns and switches in many of his MMA fights. He knows how to work the top position good and he has good offensive submissions. His submission defense has shown some holes and Massenzio might have the skills to expose those holes, but I don't think he will. Massenzio is like Dollaway, he can submit guys as long as he has dominant position. This fight will probably be won by whoever gets top position, or it could end up being whoever has the better striking. I really believe Dollaway has the edge in wrestling and striking, so I see him winning in either situation. I'd love to see if Dollaway can score another Peruvian necktie, but I think Massenzio is a bit more submission savvy than Jesse Taylor is. Dollaway could finish, but I think a unanimous decision is much more likely. It should be a pretty good and competitive fight, but I see Dollaway controlling the fight and taking it home.

Pat Barry -205 vs. Dan Evensen +175

The only reason why some view this as a close fight is because Evensen is much bigger than Barry. Evensen was right around Kongo's size except not as muscular, while Barry is only 5'11 and he doesn't weigh much. Barry could probably make 205 if he really wanted to. We all saw Evensen get knocked out by Kongo, but not many people know Barry. Barry is mostly known for his work in K-1 where he competed many times. He wasn't a top of the heap kick-boxer in K-1, but he was definitely a solid competitor. Barry might be in trouble if he was fighting a ground guy since he's primarily a striker, but Evensen isn't a guy who will take Barry down and work submissions. Evensen is a guy who wants to brawl, and Barry is a good striker. Evensen is much bigger, but he isn't the better striker. Barry will probably just kick Evensen to the body and leg for most of the first round, and finish it soon after that. Evensen won't be able to take the kicks that Barry delivers, and Barry will deliver many of them. I really don't see what Evensen can do in this fight. The only reason why the odds might have been close at a point is because neither guy is known very much. Barry will handle Evensen and he'll do it with kicks.

Matt Hamill -385 vs. Reese Andy +315

I think this might be the worst possible matchup for Reese Andy. To me it seems like Hamill might be a bit better in everything, and he's better at wrestling which is both of their strengths. Hamill is a big and tough wrestler who can take a good shot, and he is always moving forward. I don't think Hamill fought up to the best of his abilities against Franklin, but even then, it took Franklin a whole bunch of body kicks to put Hamill down for the count. Reese will probably try to stand first, but when that doesn't work he'll go for takedowns. I really see Hamill just throwing Reese aside every time Reese even tries for anything. Reese doesn't have the type of striking game to stop Hamill from doing what he wants to do. Franklin was able to come in and out and make Hamill chase him. Reese Andy is not a guy who can do that type of thing. Reese Andy is a wrestler first, and he fights with that wrestler mentality. When he strikes it isn't fast and technical, it's slow and plodding. Hamill should be able to control the wrestling game and hurt Reese in the clinch with some good dirty boxing. At the very least I see Hamill taking a decision, but I really wouldn't be surprised if Hamill finished the fight just from being able to overwhelm him. Anytime you fight someone who is better than you at your strength and also better at everything else is not a good thing. This is a terrible fight for Reese stylistically, and it's also after performance that Hamill probably wants to bounce back strong from.

Ryo Chonan -170 vs. Brad Blackburn +140

This fight is a bit off a toss up to me. Neither guy has been very consistent throughout their fighting careers, but I'd say Chonan has been a bit more consistent throughout his career. I'm pretty confident that Brad will probably win the first round, the question is if his performance can stay consistent throughout the rest of the fight. Early on I was actually thinking Chonan would outwork Brad to a decision, but I'm not so sure anymore. Brad seems to be the more talented fighter I think, he just has to deliver. He needs to come in shape and he needs to stay composed. We saw how Chonan was able to steal the decision away from Carneiro in his last fight, Brad can't let that happen in this fight. I believe Brad is the better striker, the better athlete, and possibly even a better wrestler. Brad has taken guys down who have better wrestling than himself and Chonan before, so I think he can put Chonan on his back. Chonan really hasn't shown me the finishing ability in the UFC to make me believe he can finish this fight. He has shown it in PRIDE at times, but we have to go off recent history, and even then he wasn't a spectacular finished(besides the flying scissor-kick heel hook). The people who have beaten Brad are usually people who have big punching power and can hurt him standing. I don't think Chonan can really hurt Brad on the feet. The other type of person to beat Brad is someone who can take Brad into later rounds and wear on him like Roger Huerta did, which Chonan has the ability to do, and that's what worries me about this fight. i think being in the UFC will push Brad to the next level, and I think he's worth betting at the current odds.

blackburn seems to be a popular underdog play. i think its a money burner, chonan hasnt been extraordinary since coming to the ufc, but he's head and shoulders above brad.

i cant see anyway okami loses, he'll eventually grind lister down. methodical and easy.

tons of late action on barry, he's -320 now!!! not my favorite fight to begin with, but i wouldnt touch either side now (for meaningful cash).

Looking over the fights now--

Evenson is terrible, have a hard time seeing him do anything vs anybody, he looks like a unskilled, weird looking, fighter .

he really does not look to be a mma fighter to me.

looking at barry so far.

Yah most likely okami wins this fight, however i made a smallish play on it becuz lister really is an ace in jits... okami would be smart to keep this on his feet as he is the better wrestler and will determine where this fight goes. However, I feel if this does get to the ground in the first round lister has a chance... and add on the amount of time okami has been away from the ring im looking to see a little ring rust.

honestly i dont give mir much of a chance at all.... but then again thats what i said about rashad and jardine when they both fought chuck. sure mir is dangerous in the first round but then I think, big nog's jits is better than mir... and big nog is a pretty technically sound boxer leaps and bounds above mir... i actually see a 2nd or 3rd round tko of mir due to major gassage lol

played Silva earlier at -115..

Mir might be a dog play for me.. at +300... He gets gassed easily so that worries me..

Patrick barry is one of the most feared strikers in mma, he has the best strikes in mma-

he is 3-0 a former k1 kickboxer. he has explosive power and a 1 second knockout-

if he does not get taken to the ground as i believe evenson has no ground skills, barry will ko this guy--

barrry is like vandamne, watch this highlights of his kicks

well as much as i love BIG NOG tonight, i just told myself i can not play anymore heavy favorites in MMA .... i think he wins easily in the 2nd rd by TKO and i see him down around -325 at sportsbook, but i need to stick to what i told myself and just keep it small potaotes if i plan on putting anything on it... maybe a hundo or so....

griffin / evans is such a toss up that it's really not worth even considering... i think this will be a fun fight to watch....

parlayy-- barry -290 now-- with batlimore tomorrow nfl -330 --

barry has went up from 160 to 290-- this man is lethal kicking, he could be the best striker in mma- huge legs and 3-0 in mma, does not have great ground game but ridiculous standup, 5 11 235 pounds massive legs--- the man is like a ninja

feeling wandy silva to beat quinton later--

he is 2-0 vs quinton but that means nothing, other than he basicaly kicked the shit out of quinton both times--

\i find that once a fighter is in your head its hard to beat that fighter--

quinton has legal issues and is 0-2--

thinking silva has the advantage mentally and can strike good--

little bit of a change of heart here in the rampage /silva fight... after thinking things over i can really honestly only see playing rampage as a small dog ...

silva ruffled the feathers of rampage a bit at the weighins and might have stired up rampage a bit to where he looks like a beast possessed out there.... i really see a 1st rd KO here and i think i may look for a small play...

after the HUGE movement in the evensen / bary fight i'm a little pissed my local doesnt have any of the under card odds.... <label for="rb_iconid_8">

he only has the top 3 big matches....

i like rampage. i think wandy is shot and page will prove me right. imo, the key fight is wandy vs chuck. wandy was unable to "get off" just like they say when boxers have had it. he got a quick ko over jardine, but if you look back the last couple years and he's gotten handled.

Round 1
K-1 veterans Barry and Evenson enter and look very confident. A very sparse crowd looks on from the seats. Barry circles to his left. Barry throws Evenson down but he gets back up. Hard leg kick from Barry. Evenson clinches and pins him against fence. They are separated by reveree Yves Lavigne. Three thunderous right low kicks by Barry. Evensen takes him down. Barry scrambles back up. Barry lands another huge right low kick. Evensen stumbles to his left. Evensen quits from the low kick. Official time of the TKO is 2:36 of the first.

friends this man barry as i said has ridiculous kicks, it appears evenson quit from low kicks something you never see, unless they are 90 mile per hour hard kicks -

Barry opened at -160 and hit -290--

looking at others now- not sure about silva, may be a tough matchup, thinking of watching that match for fun.

i am interested in one prop-- silva quinton fight to not go to the judges---

reason is both men are big, both are hyper, both want to win-- is a 3 rounder--

first 2 fights silva kicked the shit out of quinton--

these 2 guys should not be too strategic, silva can struggle at times---

quinton has stopped brawling, more strategic, but silva will come after him, i think it is likely he reacts more agressively--

i think someone is falling in this match, dont see a slow type match, this would appear to end in a knckout--

its not a title fight- not much other than a major grudge match from 2 strong men who can punch-

if the first 2 matches is any indication bring the stretcher to the ring---

key is quinton, if he sits back, it cold slow it down, however silva has been ko'd or ko'd his opponent quite a bit--

Quinton ko'd liddell, drew with henderson and forrest-- quinton fought smarter, dont think he can do that today and win-- silva is gonna come out firing, think too many big shots will be thrown to have a draw here.
