Philadelphia’s defense makes it a great puck-line option. The Flyers are one of the better teams at limiting opposing goals in particular because they excel at limiting opposing shot attempts. Obviously, it is easier to allow fewer goals when you deny the opposing offense more opportunities. In this month, Philadelphia has lost one game by multiple goals – that was the game in which key scorer Tyson Foerster incurred a significant injury. Otherwise, the Flyers at the very least remain very competitive. They’ve lost three games in a row, but one loss came in overtime and two in a shootout. Those three opponents, Vegas and Carolina (x2), are very strong, so the Canadiens will pose no particular problem for them tonight.

The Rangers and Canucks are both teams from whom you’ll regularly want to expect a low goal-scoring total. Both teams are missing valuable scorers – the Rangers miss center Mika Zibanejad, who has 11 goals and 14 assists on the season; Vancouver misses center Elias Pettersson, who has 8 goals and 14 assists so far. Even if both players were healthy, both teams would still be lacking goal-scoring talent. This lack is currently conspicuous: the Canucks have failed to exceed two goals in seven of their last eight games while the Rangers have failed to exceed two goals in four of their last five games. While Vancouver’s defense isn’t as good as New York’s sixth-ranked goal-scoring defense, the Rangers are struggling to score even against defenses like Anaheim’s low-ranked one.

Flames ML at -135

Edmonton is in a strong spot tonight given its ongoing tendency to regroup well after losing. The Oilers have won each of their last four games that directly followed a loss. This is no coincidental trend: all four of those wins came by at least three goals, indicating their heightened level of focus. Even if they weren’t in a bounce-back spot tonight, their outlook would be great against a Pittsburgh team that has forgotten how to win games. The Penguins are suffering a five-game losing streak. To make matters worse for them, they miss the playmaking quality and vision of injured center Evgeni Malkin. Malkin has 8 goals and 21 assists so far.

Calgary and San Jose play in a rematch of a game on November 13 that the Flames won 2-0. What is remarkable about that game is that, before it, the Flames had lost three straight games while the Sharks had won four straight. So, a down version of Calgary beat an up version of the Sharks. Now, the situation has shifted in Calgary’s favor: the Flames have won four of their last five games. While the Sharks are coming off close wins over Toronto and Pittsburgh, respectively, they are down two key centers. They miss Will Smith, who has 12 goals and 17 assists so far, and Philipp Kurashev. Tonight will be their first game without those players. They will thus be at a great disadvantage personnel-wise. Logically speaking, one must expect an even stronger Flames win in this rematch.
