Torpedo Bats

Pretty much a regular
Big talk about this new style of bat. It fits the league rules description because they just need to be less a certain length and weight with a smooth surface. That's it. I have seen them, and they are just a little fatter in the sweet spot but it only adds a few slim inches. Will it make a difference? Yes, I think so a little but not nearly what the "experts" are crowing about. First of all, you still have to hit the pitch. You have to meet up with it no matter what the spin and no matter where the level high or low in the strike zone is. You have to make solid contact and if you guess where the pitch is or will be it won't help you a bit as it will just be more wood flailing in space as you strikeout. The fucking bat doesn't hit the ball for you. So, will it produce more HR's? Yes. Maybe. But you probably would have hit a HR anyway if you caught it square. This may add a little leeway if you are on the pitch but not much more than that.

I equate this new phenomenon like everything else that seems to come along. Blown out of proportion by media heads trying to make a basically boring game they don't understand exciting. Could it ring up a few more HR's? Sure, it could but you still have to hit the damn ball. Maybe not quite as squarely as you used to, but you still have to hit it. But not every player is going to turn magically into a power hitter because of this bat.

Oh, and for the record all this talk about the Yankees hitting back to back to back because of this bat and Judge really hitting a lot more HR's to start this season has one little problem. Judge hasn't used one of these torpedo bats yet this year. But unless everyone does start hitting HR's (which I sincerely doubt) I think in a month you will be able to chalk this torpedo bat up the same way you did launch angle when that was a new thing sweeping MLB.

And for all that is holy would you please stop calling pitches "sweepers". They are fucking curve balls. Again, nothing new or magical. GL

Judge doesn't use it, right? It was vs the Brewers. RF at Yankee Stadium is a joke. I know more guys on other teams use them but let's hold off judgement until we get more results.
Ha…ha you’re good.

This will be a weapon for the cynics, something that emotional haters use as an excuse to lambast the Yankees. We need more data to come out before making judgements. Presumably the MLB approved this and approved it for reasons, although I guess cynics could argue that MLB wants the Yankees to score a lot of runs and to win more games lol

I'm sure you are right about that Chip. It could produce a few more hard hit balls that fall in but we should wait. GL

Absolutely CPA. Time will tell. And yes, MLW does kind of suck at least this early. GL :)

Good points Cavs. But MLB didn't really approve it per se they just said the bat fit the league specs and could be used. If they came out with it themselves then you have something the league wants the hitters to use. I know a lot of players used it in spring and the league said sure why not go ahead. GL

I think everyone understands the player still has to make contact. We watched historic records being shattered during the steroid era. Players still had to hit the ball. We previously had a Live Ball era as well. We saw non-power hitting players during the steroid era hitting 30+ HR’s. With this thought we would have to say Bonds, McGuire, and Sosa didn’t need the medicine to blow HR numbers out of the water. MLB says otherwise by not allowing them in the Hall. Modern medicine and technology can’t be taken lightly for enhancing performance. The confidence it brings upon a player is enormous
These are professional baseball players who are deciding to utilize different methods to enhance power that is being subsidized by billionaires owners. These bats were tested and proven to make quite a difference well prior to Opening Day.
This is my opinion with my experiences of playing ball, there’s a significant advantage with performing enhancement drugs and enhanced equipment. It’s been proven repeatedly. Once this Torpedo bat is used by every team in the MLB, we’ll know it’s the next step to more controversy.
Once again MLB is allowing this to happen because it’ll put more butts in the seats which means more $$$.

I think they want everyone to hit and score more so if it a conspiracy you would think they woulda handed them out league wide in spring training. Obviously others know bout as there guys on other teams using.

@Wiretowire said it just made the sweet spot bigger, my understanding is they can completely move the sweet spot. I need to read up a little more to truly understand. I wondered if it made making barrel contact not as effective cause the sweet spot been moved? Regardless I don’t care, long as everyone has access to them I don’t see the problem, as much I like pitching it gets kinda old watching bad pitchers dominate games, if this bat somehow negates some the redic movement pitchers getting and gives guys a better chance of barreling up 98 mph with shit moving in on you hands along with redic sliders diving away im all for it. If this helps I actually prefer it to lowering the mound which has been discussed a great deal last few years.

We'll check on the league wide batting average in May and see that it's still .250; perhaps they can use a tennis racket or an old oar.

Anything but teaching kids how to hit.

While I agree to an extent and your premise is funny we do have to admit hitting today is way damn harder than even 30 years ago. Starters only expected to go 5-6 innings for most part so they can throw harder and not worry bout saving anything for later, then the good teams trot out 3-4 more guys throwing 98+ with redic movement. I agree launch angles and the search for power has lead to lot of strike outs but I also think there a reason for that, everyone knows how difficult it is to string hits together against the stuff they facing. I still need to figure out exactly wtf this bat does?!? Is it widening the sweet spot or moving it? Cause I heard them talking bout on mlb tv or radio and they were saying they were basically moving the sweet spot to where hitters are most prone to make contact so the bats are rather individualized I assumed. Is the barrel still a sweet spot and now they also have a sweet spot in another spot? Regardless as I said below I prefer this to lowering the mound, golf clubs and tennis rackets have gotten a lot better over the years. How bout this, if it starts a hitting explosion we go back to letting pitchers use the sticky shit on their hands!!! lol

I been trying to read bout these things but the answers im really wanting is the sweet spot bigger or just moved? Imo thst a huge difference, if you just bringing the sweet spot inside a bit you essentially shortening your bat, you can still maybe reach more pitches but I’d assume the power still comes when it hits that sweet spot. Or am I wrong bout this and the traditional sweet spot on barrel still the same but now extended further inside? My understanding is longer bats generally have bigger sweet spots but I dunno if it a size to weight ratio thing or what? Ultimately I’m good with helping offense I’m just super curious if we making a bat with way more area that generates power or we just moving the spot that generates the most power?? I know I read someplace the Yankees say the bats are somewhat individualized cause different guys make more contact at different places on the bat, but the way I heard them talking bout de la Cruz using one for 1st time last night he just grabbed one, like the way it felt and he mashed.

This reminds me of when MLB changed the balls to juice home run numbers. This is not a Yankees issue.

Apparently Yankees were only ones smart enough to make it a team effort! When I 1st heard all I could think is to remember the good ol days and how if we had Tony Larussa managing or running cards we woulda done been fitted for these bats while getting our weekly “b12” injection! I’m all for it long as everyone can use, if it helps I def prefer it to lowering the mound, and like I said if offense goes up too much (which I doubt) then just let pitchers go back to putting that sticky shit on their hands to juice up the spin rate! Bigger, faster, stronger, isn’t that the goal? I remember my nephew wanting a new $500 metal bat every year that was supposed to make the ball fly, you still gotta put the bat to the ball to make it work as he quickly learned baseball wasn’t his sport! Lol

It just moves it...think of it like a "fitted bat", much the same as getting fitted for golf clubs.

So it’s odd de La Cruz just picked up someone else’s and raked the other day. I’d think that pretty customized to a particular hitter since everyone makes contact at different spots. If that the case and they not expanding the sweet spot just moving it around I really don’t see any problem with it. Pitchers will need to do their homework and throw pitches away from the sweet spot! You get a guy who brought it in a bit so he can get around and smash those 2 seamers running in then you give him a steady diet of sliders away! Just like everything at 1st ppl act like the sky is falling but then adjustments are made. It’s cracking me up ppl like cowherd who don’t know jack shit about baseball is giving the bats credit for the 6 runs a game over a whopping 4-5 games! Lol.

Thanks for clarifying, it was driving me nuts. I was starting to feel like Neo in the matrix, “ur the question that drives me!”. Lol.

Just listened to a pretty good interview Brian Kelly did with a baseball bat maker or physics guy. Incredibly interesting.

I feel like I’m starting to get a much better grasp as I’m starting to think bout these bats the same as bowling balls to a extent, I was a pretty avid bowler for long time but back then I didn’t really understand the physics behind it all, I just knew power and rev rate = my ball looking really cool with the hook and destroying the pocket! and back then I thought sexier than most the pros in those olden days as I was throwing without my thumb in the hole before it became fashionable! And not like these clown pussies you see at the lanes who need a lighter ball and use 2 hands, or even like the pro’s who now keep 2 hands on the ball. I was very insecure bout how I looked doing anything so I wanted my form to remain what I thought a prototypical bowling form should be! I was strong enough I can bowl with a 16lb ball with no thumb and most ppl can’t even tell my thumb not in the hole, practically once a week someone would ask if my thumb was in hole as I could cup it and fully extend my arm like guys who put thumb in hole! I did this at 1st out of necessity as I could never throw a hook with my thumb in hole as I just can’t get the thumb to get out the way so my fingers could rip thru and generate the revs! Seeing how I learned every sport watching the pros I had no interest throwing a straight ball!!

So anyways the point of all this is I didn’t understand how these different bowling balls reacted so differently even when thrown the same. Obviously any idiot that bowls understands the difference between the urethane crap that made up bunch the balls they let you use if you didn’t have your own. You kmow if you throwing a 16lb ball it always those matted black balls and often times sounded little funny when you revved them up, they chewed up the oil but you weren’t getting a bunch of hook no matter how many revs you got. You will often see the high rev pros throw these balls after the oil has broken down and they struggling w the reactive resin ball from hooking way more to the point you can only move so far left and still can’t hold the pocket! when they switch to the urethane they move way back right and the ball has a shape much like norm duke and the other old timers where it much straighter w a gradual break to the pocket. Those are all pretty much the same imo. But when you get into the reactive resin balls there a million options that determine how much a ball hooks, how far it slides down the lane before it starts to break to the pocket, obviously the amount of oil on the lanes plays a part as well. But it doesn’t stop there, the surfaces can control how long the ball slides before grabbing and starting to turn, but then there the inside I still don’t have a great understanding of but they havd a pretty large Range of how powerful that hook will be once the ball makes its turn, you can also have your ball drilled off center various ways that help create hook and the axis of the spin! Im sorry im still
Going on and on but I really believe if I understood all this as a kid and had a bowling ally owner who knew and believed in me I seriously could have been a pro bowler! I know I talk a lot of junk but im dead serious bout this one, I dunno if I would have made it to top or anything but I have no doubt I could have competed had I understood all this and either had a owner of local lanes or money to where I could afford to try all these different balls opposed to using the same ball my moms saved up to get me for Xmas 1 year that was a lot of damn money for here as shit was not cheap. From 13 into my 20s I had a really nice storm that when the oil was right I would have ppl watching me just abuse the pins! Picked me up a hand me down that a friend I knew used who was a much different bowler than me, that ball slid way down the lane then it darted to the pocket most the time at a angle that wasn’t conducive for carry, I would hit pocket with that thing and leave some crazy splits!!! Again I know this story super long and sorry, it just kinda a bummer when I think bout things that may have been possible for me if I had the means or someone to just give a shit bout a poor kid who coulda used a little help! Oh and I couldn’t pick 10 pins above 50% to save my life which coulda been my diwnfall! I pretty much had to put my thumb in hole and just throw at it straight and hard. Maybe had I eased up on the power I coulda hit them at a better clip but fact is if I had the right equipment I could have thrown the way I was accustomed and the ball would have slid all way down lane and I’m sure I woulda picked them up much closer to the 99% of time pro bowlers do!! lol. I just recently learned most the pro’s use 15lb balls, me being me assumed bigger, heaviest, strongest, was always the answer! lol. Last year took my nephew and just used a house ball that was actually reactive but not a strong hook which didnt really matter to me, it was only 15lbs and turns out I carried every bit as well as I did with a 16, not to mention im not as strong I was in younger years and I was shocked to realize how much easier it was to keep my perfect form with 2 fingers just cause that 1lb, and my carry was every bit as good as a 16lb ball!! Ok I swear im done now. Just a flashback of what could have been! Couldn’t believe when I started seeing these 2 handed guys on tv! I felt like I got cheated! Lol.

That incredibly long point and story was simply to say the way these bats were being explained it reminded me of this! Made total sense, the guy was even saying some guys are using different torpedo bats for various pitchers, situations, or simply how it felt in his hand that day! They didn’t get to this but I do wonder if the pitcher can tell what kind of bat, where the sweet spot is? I feel like that would only be fair, guy comes up w a scouting report knowing the pitcher loves to start the at bat busting him in w 2 seamers I think it only right the pitcher knows he got a bat with a sweet spot a tad further inside ready to jump my pitch! Then I can throw cutters away!! Anyways I think this all very fascinating and should be here to stick around in some form or another! I think it could easily add another level of excitement and strategy to a game that has become way to much about the “3 true outcome” bs!!!

I hope I didn’t bore everyone to death and some of that makes sense!!!
