This might be the last straw, David Stern is out of control...

I agree with everyone here who says Stern is way out of line. Pop should be able to do whatever he wants to do to win games. He has proven he is one of the best in the business. The Spurs nearly won the game anyway. I don't Blame Coach Pop at all on this one.. Stern better re-think this one or he's setting a very bad precedent

TNT pays a shit load of money for the prime time Thursday games and they probably blew their lid when this news came out

Stern is saving face for the league, don't really see an issue with it

I really doubt A. that this would have happened if it was a random tuesday/wednesday night game, and B. the sanction is going to be that severe

if teams rest players again this year it certainly won't be a TNT game and they likely won't get to travel home early

dictator stern should rethink this. crossing a bad bad line here.

u want the nba to be a broadway show, then fine. it's a sport you dumbfuck, and the game trumps the fuck out of entertainment. this is a shame for all sports

also lost is the fact SAS earned the right to do this by winning the previous 5. AGAIN its not just about a road trip or 4/5 or 6/8 spots or miami doing it because miami came back and played twice in like 2 weeks while sas faces memphis on sat........

stern is right to be concerned or disappointed but wrong for making public or threatening action........sports is pure business these days and anyone would be disappointed if they purchased something and got quality but not exactly what they expected..........you hire victoria's secrets models for a pr event , you want the top names not 5 pretty faces no one knows........you have spurs-heat a finals preview you dont want the coach resting players...in theory.....and giving you the spurs still but not the spurs spurs.......your kid wants a yankee at his party........he's thinking jeter you bring casey mcghee........not the same thing .......lol.........its the world we live in......

thing is w mem on sat really no other way pop can handle it........because those guys went straight home

blessing was game went to the wire and better scheduling has to be a priority ......accept blame before pointing fingers imo

I will be devil's advocate here. NBA isn't a basketball - it's a show. When a participant of the show, hurts the show, the show has the right to punish him. As A.Smith correctly mentioned, Heat fans don’t get to see Spurs players 41 games a year, but only once a year.
Furthermore, it was on a night of two games only, in a game shown on National TV.
Just think, what rating will the league have, if teams start to do it each time.
Will TNT have the right to file a lawsuit against the league – for paying top dollar to get to see NBDL?
Something like that can seriously fuck up the league and it been in a sort of a problem few years back.
Tomorrow D’Antoni will decide to rest his aging stars against Denver, on national broadcast and on Sunday, Heat decide to give LeBron and Wade rest on a game broadcasted by ABC and so on…
I think that Stern is pissed because Pop decided that instead of resting his players yesterday, in a meaningless game in Orlando, that wasn’t shown anywhere, he decided to do that today.
Furthermore, when Spurs played b2b in DC, after two OT game in Toronto, Pop didn’t rest his starters. It really looks like a big FU to Stern from Pop.
And lets be honest, Pop isn’t really about coaching with his decision – or to be more accurate, not only about it.
If my memory serves me right, he does it only on road games, never in front of Spurs home crowd, because he doesn’t want their fans, that bought tickets to the game, thinking they will see Manu, Parker and Timmy – will get to watch 48 minutes of Diaw, Splitter and De Colo...
So he also thinks about it, but decides that he couldn’t care less, because it’s a road game…

I don't care about all that bullshit. First of all nobody was watching the NBA game over TNF anyway. I certainly wasnt. Second of all, it's all about separation of power. What gives the commissioner the right to tell a team who they can and cannot play? Plus San Antonio receives virtually no attention from the media whatsoever.

I'm a living sample that Stern was right.
I already set my alarm clock to wake up at 3:30am to watch the game, but the moment I heard that SAS will be without their trio, I cancelled the alarm clock...

TNT would have given Stern absolute shit about it and he responded like a dictator. TV rights lace the Commish's mistress with the finer things, yo. Totally agree with Pops not wanting to burnout his players given the season is such a marathon from a coaching standpoint but at the end of the day the NBA is a business and it's all about the revenue, the fans don't pay money to watch the 'bench' play. NBA is marketed on it's 'stars'...

Besides a thursday night TNT game.. what is the difference of sitting your players (stars), the last 2 weeks of the season getting ready for the playoffs... they have had Thursday night TNT games then....vs,, sitting periodically through the year?? just throwing it out there...

I think the big thing for the league (and the thing that I was most surprised about) was the fact that Duncan, Parker, Ginobli and co. didn't even make the trip. That, right there, was Popovich pretty much telling the NBA where they could stick it...

LMAO at anyone defending Stern here. As mentioned, this happens at the end of seasons. What is the big deal. In my opinion and I believe this is prolly the truth, Pop found a spot where he can rationalize sitting them for the team purposes and give a big FU to Stern and National TV. We all see how much Pop loves those ingame interviews. I am positive he schemed this and kudos to him plus a game against Memphis is bigger than any game against the Eastern Conference.

Agreed....

pop could of handled it much better... someone used an MLB reference above which actually is stupid because its apples and oranges but OK lets go with that-- you think if Dusty, sent phillips, Bruce, Votto (do they have any other decent players, can't think of any) home on a flight before last game of roadtrip he, wouldn't catch shit? Ya, he would... Pop handled it poorly and did it because he thinks , well, he can... Stern reacted like I would have reacted, and I sorta agree..... If you want to rest your players, lots of ways to do it, sending them home a day early is not one...

Day later ..........I think both guys made their point but Pop did it better. First off , we know Pop does this routinely but I feel he clearly picked the NBA's most important night and prestigious team (champs + star player) to PROTEST the schedule. I dont think he feels it just the Spurs but its ridiculous for SA to play memphis after a 6 g in 9day trip on 1 days rest. This would also be something like SA 3rd road game since miami last played. Also Miami played twice at home since SA started this trip so Spurs were on plane trip # 6 while miami has been home for 10 days and played twice. Sitting Danny Green was his fuck you...

People are talking about the schedule now........where they before? nope......look at the thanksgiving NFL game with the stupid Lion penalty and lousy Texans TD>>>> who knew it happened in TB 4 days earlier ?

Next is still imo SA earned the right to do this by being 5-0!!

I disagree with TEE somewhat in that a baseball team would catch shit for doing the same and yes baseball is different. However no baseball team flies 7 times in 10 days like SA will have.Plus Votto could change a game in 1 at bat after all day off, most nba guys cant ride the pine for 45 minutes and suddenly make a difference.........it wouldnt be a day off if you might play in the nba imo......baseball teams send SP home a day early routinely and they are on 4 days rest and at worst in 3 cities on trip.......Tee is right not a good comparision but mlb teams throw at skeleton lineups often......

Not a Stern fan and he should have kept this behind close doors but he has to say something o ask why? The NBA is a pure business and he is the CEO. The Nba has built up and billed Thursday nights and TNT pays a ton of money for the rights and you assume with a thin lineup no one is going to tune into TnT now.......its a PR disaster because of what Thur nights mean to the nba and what TV money means to all sports.........Sports cannot exist today w/o TV contracts. His error is talking sanctions imo. Fans were slighted but at least they got a game down to the wire and soewhat got their moneys worth......

Stern has to save face and do damage control for the nba........He came off like an ass though............No matter what you think Stern needs to address it somehow when tv money fuels the league and you porposely schedule 2-3 games every thursday so they are not just games but events

this is nothing short of an outrage. i ranted on twitter about it, let me post some of the questions i asked:

1. What if Pops said those players missed a team meeting and are suspended 1 game?

2. What if he said they have flu like symptoms?

3. What if Pops says with a straight face that he thought the guys he played gave his team the best chance to win based on matchups? Obviously that would be moronic, but isnt that his right, as coach, to decide that?

4. What kind of precedent does this send? What if a team decides in April to bench an aging but well known veteran for a rookie

In two weeks the Jets play on MNF. Can Goodell say to the Jets that they could be find if they don't start Tebow because of all the viewers that would bring?

Just an absolute joke of a decision. Can Stern legally do this? Im not even kidding I bet a lawyer could win the case for the Spurs if they challenged this fine. A coach is allowed to make coaching decisions as he seems fit.

Ummmm..

You're all missing the point.

A) Pop has done this forever w/o a single warning from Stern. (some of you mentioned he's been doing this forever I realize)
B) He broke no rule to strategically sit his players....there is no rule that says he cant do that. A coach can play whoever he chooses, give me a break.
C) The fans were treated to a competitive hometown last minute win against a very basketball savvy squad.
D) Sanctions are an incredible over reaction, but to threaten them w/o any warning for Pop knowing that he does this about 4 times a season? Give me a fucking break. He's making sure his team wins the most games and competes at the highest level. He's putting his championship contending team in the best position to compete for a championship by keeping a very aged team fresh and healthy.

Go To Hell Stern, this will never hold up on appeal.

The only point this proves is that the NBA schedule makers are fucking morons. They have 7 months to schedule games for 30 teams, there is no need to have that many games in so few nights for any team, let alone the amount of teams who've had to endure it.

In the playoffs, they drag each series out over weeks, taking multiple days (like 3 or 4 in some cases) off between games. There's no excuse for that, just like there's no excuse for 4 games in 5 or 6 nights in the regular season. It's the year 2012, with the computers and technology out there today, scheduling shouldn't be such an issue. Or, it could be that dictator Stern is being so greedy and trying to squeeze every single dollar he possibly can out of fans, teams, etc, the schedule fuck ups are nothing more than the league wanting it that way. He's a disgrace, how he lasted as long as he did, I'll never understand.

Well....

But if it's not going to be the same punishment regardless of which night or network the game is on, then it's clearly complete horseshit to punish SA in the first place. That doesn't even make rational, logical sense, which apparently is why it's something Stern is doing.

Who was the idiot on here a few months ago that argued with me that stern may be the best commissioner ever. Ha ha ha
