The next coach of LSU will be... ?

Latest Rumors as of 11/26:

- A private plane was chartered from Baton Rouge to Nebraska --> Husker nation is interested in Bo Pelini (I am not surprised)

- A private plane chartered from Auburn to Baton Rouge --> not for Tuberville, but for a possible grand return of Will Muschamp to Baton Rouge?

Also, here are some names I have heard thrown around and my thoughts:

- Les Miles --> general consensus around Baton Rouge is that he is unwanted... Mishitgan fans, have at him!

- John Gruden --> starting to turn things around in Tampa, so I'm doubtful.

- Jack del Rio --> same story as Gruden, so I'm doubtful. However, del Rio was considered to be one of the top candidates to replace Saban a few years back and word around campus and Baton Rouge social circles at that time was that Skip Bertman was too much of a cheap-ass, impatient AD to wait on del Rio, so he signed Miles.

- Spurrier --> if I remember ETG and I's conversation months back correctly, Skummy told me something about the structure of Spurrier's contract makes it very difficult for him to leave before the contract's end date. Green, inform me on that again...

- Butch Davis --> doing a decent job at UNC, and had expressed interest in the LSU position when Saban left. The problem: Davis wanted to take that season off because of a heart condition I believe and to spend time w/ family, and, as I said above, Bertman is impatient, so, of course, he didn't wait for Davis.

- Mike Leach --> why not? I saw it somewhere on ESPN.com earlier today (although he just entered a new contract, see below for details)

- Paul Johnson --> I consider him to be one of the best collegiate football minds. My only question to those that remember, was he successful recruiting when at Georgia Southern? I think he obviously has the mental capacity to fulfill the job successfully, but I am oblivious to his recruiting capabilities. However, if he can recruit, he would have my vote to replace Miles.

I want to hear the forum's thoughts...
Have I left anyone off of the list?
Add your thoughts, everyone...

I hope Mike Leach gets serious consideration. I have always wondered what he could do if he gets a serious defense with that system he has

regarding Leach:

In August of 2006, Leach signed a five-year contract with Texas Tech that will pay him at least $10 million if he stays in place through 2010. Leach's guaranteed compensation will be $1.6 million in 2006, $1.65 million in 2007, $1.75 million in 2008, $1.85 million in 2009 and $2.15 million in 2010.

what about boise st head coach? anybody else see him pulling an urban meyer?

I've heard his name thrown around but not with any gravity or consistency... here is an ESPN article...

Boise St.'s Petersen wants to stay, but keeping options open
Updated: November 26, 2007, 8:25 PM ET

<!-- end page tools --><!-- begin story body --><!-- template inline -->BOISE, Idaho -- Chris Petersen says there could be another head coaching job appealing enough to make him consider leaving Boise State. But the coach of the Broncos (No. 25 BCS, No. 24 AP) insists he doesn't know where that job might be right now.
Petersen, who has compiled a 23-2 record in two seasons, is among a handful of candidates being linked to coaching vacancies across the college football landscape, including Georgia Tech, Nebraska and Baylor.
On Monday, Petersen, said he had not been contacted about any opening. He reaffirmed his commitment to Boise State, but left the door ajar when asked if he would consider other opportunities.
"It just would probably depend on the situation," he said. "And the only reason I say that is you never say 'never.' Is there a school out there that I'm kind of going ... 'if they called?' No, there's not.
"This is a great place and I'm completely happy here and hope we can stay here a long time," Petersen said.
Speculation about the long-term tenure of Bronco football coaches is a familiar pastime around southwest Idaho this time of year.
Two years ago, then-head coach Dan Hawkins, coming off a fourth consecutive Western Athletic Conference title, was lured away to Colorado and the prestige of competing in the Big 12 conference. Hawkins led the Broncos after Dirk Koetter, who led the Broncos for three seasons, left for Arizona State and the Pac-10 in 2001.
In a bid to keep Petersen and blunt the appeal of salaries paid to upper echelon coaches, Boise State administrators sweetened Petersen's contract at the end of last season. With his base salary and incentives, Petersen could earn more than $1 million this season.
Part of his bigger payday is tied to the team's performance this year.
The Broncos (10-2, 7-1) lost to Hawaii (No. 12 BCS, No. 11 AP) on Friday, snapping a nine-game winning streak and a run of five consecutive conference titles.
But the Broncos boasted the WAC's second-most potent offense, averaging 42.8 points and 475.7 yards per game. On defense, Boise State gave up the fewest points, 20 per game, and allowed a league-low 326.5 yards per game.
Still, the Broncos failed to get by Hawaii and make a case that last year's darling deserved a second straight invitation to a Bowl Championship Series game.
In Petersen's first year, he guided the Broncos to a perfect 13-0 record, capped by their thrilling overtime win over Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl.
Petersen denied that playing in the Hawaii Bowl or at home in the Humanitarian Bowl -- the best bowl bets for the WAC's top two teams -- would be a letdown after playing for bigger stakes nearly a year ago.
"You've got to earn that," Petersen said. "Those are special bowl games and you've got to be a special team to get that done. We're obviously just not there quite yet. We're still a bit young and inexperienced in some places to be in that position."
Petersen said the players will have the week off to recover from a long season before bowl preparations begin next week. He also said offensive lineman Tad Miller will miss the postseason after tearing two ligaments against Hawaii. Petersen said return specialist Rashuan Scott also injured a knee and his status for the bowl game is uncertain, while cornerback Orlando Scandrick should be cleared to play despite dislocating a thumb Friday.

Thats crazy Blue. Would Spurrier really leave SC already. Where is this coming from

Of course, everything is speculation as of now. Hell, Miles is denying Pelini interviewed or was contacted by Nebraska.

What I've been thinking about though is the buyout clauses in Spurrier and Miles's contracts. I'm sure Spurrier's is more, but there is a clause in Miles's contract about leaving for Michigan prematurely and the extra monetary value that UM would need to pay out. So LSU could take that extra stipend from UM and put it toward Spurrier's buyout at SC. LSU is set for coaching in baseball, but John Brady will be departing LSU basketball once Bertman resigns from the AD position, so LSU may be going on a spending spree soon!

I'm sure the rumours are like wildfire down there right now.

I would love to see tedford coach at a school that actually cares about football; I think he'd be great for their program though I'm not sure he has any ties to the region, which might hurt him recruiting wise.

I know he has to be getting sick of some of the shit at Berkeley.

Yeah, I have not even heard Tedford mentioned, which I find almost odd. You'd think his name would at least be mentioned even if he was not seriously considered.

Breaking News First reported by Pigskin Football GuysNovember 27, 2007 03:17 by Pigskin_WebbTake a look at this information I received from an unnamed source close to LSU's situation:
1. Bo Pelini - hired as Nebraska's new football coach and will be announced either this afternoon or tomorrow. Will not coach in the SEC Championship game.
2. Jon Tenuta, GA Tech's D Coordinator will be hired as LSU's new Defensive Coordinator making somewhere around $600,000 a year.
3. Les Miles - Has accepted the Michigan head coaching job and will announce this sometime Sunday or Monday after the SEC Championship game.
4. LSU is in talks with Steve Spurrier about their upcoming head coaching vacancy

thats some crazy stuff. hope it pans out, that wouldnt be bad at all.

and I can't wait for brady to go, just because he does well one year he gets some bs extension.

and he did well because of the pure physical talent of tyrus thomas and big baby, and the leadership of mitchell... it had nothing to do with his coaching

rofl. i remember all too clearly when bama fans were screaming spurrier. I tried to talk my idiot buddy out of betting on him on bodog. can LSU offer more $$ than bama could have? do you think spurrier has decided he wants more than a non pressured all hands off program where his family is happy? maybe he's decided he needs another quick Nat. Championship? personally, i have no clue, but i'd still be surprised if he moved to BR

ETG give me 5 dimes on that

Spurrier put an offer in on a house in Baton Rouge today!

Ok that is the latest rumor.

this sounds like bama last yr..

he put a offer on a house before or after he met with the 3 recruits today?

before sherman got the TAMU job, their fans were whilin' out saying he was going to TAMU.

Seems like every major BCS opening and Spurrier is an option.

The bottom line folks is ego, he won't leave SC because of that.

This looks like an update to that previous email alert.

1- Pellini is taking the Nebraska job. It was done in the last 2 days but has been worked on for a few weeks. They did not know about Arkansas meeting with Pellini.
2- Something happened this weekend at LSU. Miles stepped up efforts for the Michigan job and has people rallying others for support. The feeling is mutual with a few big time donors and skip. Both parties are wanting to go seperate ways. LSU knows it cannot fire him so they hope he takes the job to Michigan. It is a mutual feeling of hope for seperation. BTW, Bertman didn't know about the Pellini interview and blew a gasket internally. It was ugly.
3- My sources have spoken with agents and as of a few days ago, Spurrier was not interested in the LSU job. Now, that can change and change quickly. Right now, Spurrier is not interested no matter what you read. That comes from the agents.
4- Brace yourself and do not shoot the messenger. There are 3 big time donors at LSU and some BOS who want 1 person back at LSU. I have said it and said it. Here is the deal, 3 million per year for 10 years with a 10 million+ buyout. For a man that doesn't do buyouts, that is huge. They verified the wife wanted her house back and they verified the powers that be feel a shock will be felt but a few wins will replace the shock. I will not type his name because some may throw their computer. BTW, this goes with what was posted earlier about money and contracts and my sources have never heard of the lair.
5- Tommy Tubberville wants the Arkansas job. He secretly put feelers out to return to Ole Miss. I kid you not. He wants out of Auburn bad. There is a secret deal at Auburn between Bobby Lowder and Bobby Petrino and Tubberville will not have to pay the buyout if he leaves. The question is does Arkansas want him. He wants the LSU job but doesn't think he can get it. Jimmy is pushing Saban. Stay tuned for this one.
6- Back to Miles. I saved the best for last. If Michigan does not have a coach by Friday, Les Miles will be named their new HC next week. Ferentz is in the picture but it is to help leverage a better long term deal and facility upgrade at Iowa. There are some people at Michigan who are old friends helping him get more out of Iowa. It appears Miles will be the man at Michigan and skip is aware of Mac and Miles stepping up efforts for the job but again, the feelings are mutual.
Now, take this for what it's worth. My 2 sources do not know each other and both confirmed all 6 issues including Tubberville and Ole Miss. They know what is going on behind close doors. Now, I am a messenger here. Out of the 90k that sits in Death Valley, we make up a small % on this board. The powers that be and make the decisions don't really care about us and will do what they want. The feeling is 90% or higher only care about winning and all will be okay with a MNC. With that said, post away.

It looks like we are slowly eliminating scenarios... here's the latest from my side:

Everything still points to Pelini at Nebraska. While tempted to name him as head coach this week, it will have to wait until next week if everything we know right now is correct.

Michigan and Kirk Ferentz is not likely to happen as he likes it at Iowa and makes in the neighborhood of three million a year. Every muckity muck in the Michigan community wants Miles. Carr, his cronies and his staff are hoping Ferentz changes his mind. Supposedly athletics director Bill Martin is indifferent and is just a gatherer of information.

The feeling is that after the SEC Championship game that things could go in two directions with Miles depending on whether LSU wins or not. He wins and he is more apt to stay, he loses and he might decide that it's best he goes to Michigan if offered the job.

If the job is open at LSU, Jack Del Rio wants the job.

Adding to that, I want Jack Del Rio's daughter at LSU.

Seeing that UM wants Miles so bad is puzzling. The guy has more talent on his sidelines than every team in the country (cept 1), his defense is littered with NFL prospects and his offense is far from short on talent. This marks 2 straight years Miles has had a more talented team than everyone in the SEC, yet he finds himself with 2 losses again in conference play. I don't give a shit if they happened in the 100th OT, he lost 2 games to 2 less talented teams

i think del rio would be great as a college coach right now. he'd be who i was going after if i was an LSU booster. get ready to fork out the $$ though.

nick the short prick can't leave bama unless another school has 30mil in cash to hand over.

I live in Baton Rouge and the word here is that Miles declined a 3 year extension with increase in pay yesterday and it looks like hes heading to Michigan definately but heres the kicker...none other than Nick Saban has been in talks with LSU about the position. Apparently, when he structured that deal with Alabama last year, there was no buyout penalty. Saban has always regretted leaving LSU and I think he would love to return and actually stay at LSU for the rest of his career.

bold is true. i just meant bama guaranteed him 30 mil in cash, no matter what. so i would assume he would not be looking to take a pay cut. maybe all big programs, including lsu will be willing to pay some coach that way. i thought only bama would do that, because of the history, old $$, and desperation.

Where is my conspiracy theory thread? Where is it? I called this like three weeks ago.

<HR style="COLOR: #d1d1e1" SIZE=1><!-- / icon and title --><!-- message -->How funny would it be if Miles left LSU and they went back after Saban?

I'm sure they wouldn't because of how much money he got, but to see him bolt Alabama would be as disgusting as it would be hilarious.

Is Michigan bowl eligible?
