The Game -- Michigan vs Ohio State -- and other B1G Week #14 Talk

The time has arrived, we are back with the 121st meeting between Ohio State and Michigan in what is simply known as "The Game".

There is no bigger game in college football annually, and once again, we have conference title and postseason implications on the line.

This series dates back to 1897. Michigan leads the all-time series 62-51-6. There has always been an ebb and flow to this series, and the current trend this decade is Michigan wins. This author likes that. You can say in my true fandom lifetime that I have seen the bookends. I started watching this series in the late 1980s and watched quite the run by the Wolverines with a 10-2-1 run during the John Cooper years. The start of this century was all Buckeyes, though, as they won 16 out of 18. The tide has turned, though in the 2020's and that begs the question...

Is Ryan Day their new John Cooper?

Perhaps. Cooper had some great teams and frankly should have won a National Championship in the 1990s. But, he didn't. Day was able to rebound from last year's upset and win a playoff. That was a nice consolation prize (yes, I am kidding) for losing the biggest game of the year. Once again, all the pressure is on Ryan Day and his Buckeyes!

Last season was wild, even to the most diehard Michigan fans. Losing so many seniors from the 3-time Big Ten Championship teams, plus a big amount of the staff to the NFL, led to a pretty substandard season. They did come into that game with some momentum in November, but with a pretty average at best QB, no one saw them scoring enough to win, including me. Ohio State had a 20-million-dollar roster, a great set of receivers, and two future NFL RBs. Add in a damn good defense. Michigan also had multiple draft picks on defense, and that is why they stayed in the game.

Coach Moore said all week and afterwards that he simply wanted to get to the 4th quarter with a reasonable score and win from there. That had honestly become the mantra during the winning streak. Let's get into the final stanza with a chance to win. Reliable defense, a great running game, and good kickers go a long way. We saw @Frank Costanza mention this in the week #14 discussion thread. The longer Michigan stays in this one, the more the pressure mounts, especially on the road. I'll tell ya what, thanks goodness for that playoff last year, or this might be a hot seat game for Day.

So, let's start talking about the '25 edition of Mich-OSU!

There are the basic stats and schedules so far for each team.

My issue with Ohio State, for capping, is that they have been basically playing exhibitions for 3 months now. That isn't their fault. We expected the November game vs Penn State to be a top 5-6 matchup. Things happen. They also don't have Indiana, USC, or Oregon on their schedules this year. I can edit this and say the win at Washington is quite quality. That was very nice, early on with a young QB on the road. That Texas game seems so long ago. Frankly, Texas was pretty bad on offense at that point, too.

So, I have been saying this for weeks, but capping OSU for this game, Indiana next week, and then the playoffs isn't as clear cut as some might think it is. They are a helluva team, and we'll see in the next 6 weeks whether this is their best defense in years. So far, they are tracking that way. Let's look at a few numbers, though...

Taking a look at the OSU Schedule -- Here is the ranking of the opposing RUSH Offenses --

Texas #110
Ohio U #15
Washington #57
Minnesota #126
Illinois #94
Wisconsin #113
Penn State #63
Purdue #93
UCLA #84
Rutgers #89

Michigan sits at #10 nationally -- but there are 3 injuries back there we will discuss in a bit --

Only one team ran for over 100 on the Bucks -- Texas with 166

If I remember correctly, Penn State had some early success on the edges.

With any good team, we have to realize that the opponent plays catch-up and might run less --

In my opinion, their front is good, but it's their LBs that make this front 7 so damn good.

The Buckeyes in 2025 are built quite a bit differently than the first 5-6 years of the Day era. Those teams wanted to score, score, and score some more. Their skill position recruiting was incredible (and still is), but they didn't focus on the trenches, maybe as much as they should have. We've seen Michigan punch them in the mouth for years now. The 2023 team was much 'tougher' but came up a bit short. Last year was a combination of many things. This team this year may not be the most flashy, but they get the job done.

I've mentioned quite a bit the last 5-6 weeks, my concern for their running game. They started to show out vs UCLA and Rutgers, but everyone is beating up on the Scarlet Knights. Maybe that was the start of something, though.

Remember, the biggest stat key in The Game is whoever wins the rushing battle usually wins the game.

So, let's talk about that Michigan run game and all these injuries...

Simply put, the Michigan OL keeps getting better and better in the run game. They REALLY shine in 4th quarters when it's time to close out wins. The RB stable started with a lot of Justice Haynes and some Jordan Marshall for the first 6-7 weeks. Haynes was low-key a Heisman candidate until the injury. Such a bummer, as he was going to run for 1600-1800 yards and really have a memorable one year in Ann Arbor. Oh, what could have been? Great kid though, and good luck in the NFL. Marshall struggled at times early on as Haynes was so damn good! This made the workload shift from sharing to single-digit carries at times for Jordan. Here's the thing with #23, he is so much better when he receives bulk carries. He was also forcing runs early on, trying to show he could make big plays. Now, he is being himself and is performing at an all-league level...

So, of course, Marshall suffers an injury at Wrigley Field. I thought it was a season-ender. Moore says he could have played last week. Coach speak? We'll see. So, during that wild game at Northwestern, they turned to walk-on Bryson Kuzdzal. This kid just runs HARD! He got the start in College Park and ran for 100 yards and 3 TDs. He never gives up on a run. Love him!

Also suffering an injury at Maryland is the heart and soul of the offense, FB Bredeson. A Senior Captain. If you don't remember him, he's the one who laid out Caleb Downs in the Rose Bowl. He's a champion and the heart of the offense. He did say today he plans on playing. I am guessing 99% of others in his situation do not play here. The thing is, he's so vital to every part of this offense. We'll see early on how much he can contribute.

As for the rest of the UM offense, Andrew Marsh has exploded in Big Ten play and been one of the best freshmen in America. The beauty of that is that it slides McCulley to the #2 spot, and he's playing much better in that role. Meanwhile. 18-year-old Bryce Underwood has shown flashes of brilliance and also made freshman mistakes the last month. Overall, he has been pretty good with turnovers, but games vs Purdue and NW were not good in that department. All that being said, his passing has been exquisite since the bye week. He hit the frosh wall and needed that break + teaching moments. Learning and perfecting the RPO is all part of the process. I cannot wait to see the next two years with this guy.

On defense, Michigan has been pretty damn good aside from the USC game. In that game, they were hit in the mouth and seemed to learn a lot. The run defense is excellent. The linebackers have been banged up, but they are a very good unit. The secondary has plenty of talent, but they have some lapses, and this is a scary game for that -- with all the WR talent back there. Wink Martindale can either be very good or very bad in the fans' eyes. How he calls this game will be critical. How aggressive will he be?

The biggest problem for Michigan this year is special teams. I told you all before the season that this would lose them a game or two. The punter sucks. The place-kicker was an all-American last year but has regressed a bit this year. Thankfully, they finally pulled the plug on Morgan returning kicks. He's AWFUL. Dom won the game last year for Michigan and he simply cannot be missing kicks this week.

So, I'll wrap this up for now with some Michigan quick hitters....

-This is the youngest team in the Big Ten
-They have 3 freshmen on the OL
-Injuries to the starting RB and starting FB
-QB1 is 18 years old
-The defense has been committing dumb penalties all month, a lot of offsides

Someone did a comparison of each Michigan team this decade(stats). The defense is pretty darn close. The offense is close as well, in yards, but is quite a bit behind in points. They have not been efficient in the red zone.

Can Michigan win as a DD underdog at home? Absolutely.

How can they do that?

Win the running game, win the turnover battle, and be rock solid on special teams. From there, I hope you can move the ball a bit on this defense. On the other end, stop the run and make Sayin's life uncomfortable.

Any surprises? I think there are a few Underwood-designed runs we haven't seen yet.

My fear? Marshall and Bredeson are still banged up. That means the running game is doing very little. At that point, the game falls on the young QB, and a few turnovers build up. The thing about Bryce is that he struggles for a series or two after a turnover. That is part of the learning process.

I will say, the biggest issue I see for Michigan in this game is pass protection. As good as the OL run blocks, their pass protection is average at best. Now, if they give him some clean pockets, this could be a lot of fun.

Again, get this game into the 4th quarter and let the opposing coach feel the pressure. That plan has been working for several years now. We'll see..

As far as a prediction? I do feel this is a learning game. The Bredeson injury is so big. Don't ask me why, but I keep having this 2005 vision in my head. I am not sure why. Maybe it was the girl I was banging then ;)

Go Blue.

The FB injury is interesting, I wasn't aware of it. I can't remember a year when Ohio State clearly had the better defense as they do this year (maybe a few Tressel teams.) Ohio State needs to choke for this to be a good game in my opinion. But it's fair to say that the longer Michigan stays in the game, the more Day is gonna grip.
This rivalry rarely gives you the game that you think you're going to get so I'm not counting Michigan out. I made it 14ish so see value with OSU from a gambling point of view.

Holy shit. That's amazing.

I'm no fan of ohio but I certainly am of this game, the Iron Bowl, the Egg Bowl, etc. They're the differentiators, an intricate part of the sport's fabric and one of the primary things that separate the college game from the pro game. I would laugh at my Texas friends who were glad that the Horns no longer played A&M. Was such a crock. These are the games that make the sport.

And again, while no fan of ohio, I always give credit to Woody for one of the single best coach quotes of all time. Up 6 touchdowns on UM, he goes for two. Why? Because "I couldn't go for three."

Ah, the hate. Embrace it. As it's so fantastic.

The Mich defense is pretty darn good BUT this is potentially the best OSU defense in 15+ years.

From a capping view, I just wish they had the opportunity to play a few good offenses so we could accurately cap the playoffs. The next two weeks at least shows us something.

Next week vs Indiana (provided they win) is a very fun matchup. The Indiana trenches are for real.

Huge injury.

I think middle of the 2nd quarter on what seemed like an innocent play be left the game. Street clothes after half and the team said it 'wasn't good '. He's warrior though. He'll play but let's see how effective he is. He's the main reason this run game has been so damn good.

Great post.

That picture cracks me up because it's the special teams nerds after last year's victory. Symbolic of some dorks just having the day of their lives in an iconic rivalry.

Why were Texas fans happy to lose the rivalry? I don't get that.

As far as the Woody quote. Respect on that. Why? That spurred on the greatest game in the rivalry that started the 10 year war.

Tate and Smith injury updates? Day hasn't said too much
Looks like ole Ryan is trying to be coy on injuries.

Fair enough.

Smith seems to be a go.

From what I read they are being very quiet on Tate.

I'll let the OSU guys tell us more.

That Styles kid suffered a shoulder last week too, I believe.

Nut up and play week. Michigan has injuries galore. Next man up. Make this your moment.

That's just epic. I (somewhat) thoughtt when the two cars stopped that Woody was going to jump behind the wheel and plow over Schembechler.

I'm there in '27. Has to be in Ann Arbor. Seen enough of Columbus to know how much I hate it.

These weather apps crack me up.

I'm not sure if everyone is a weather nerd like I am. Having grown up on a boating family and we spent a lot of time on the Great lakes back in the 1990s, we learned weather at an early age. Both parents were stingy on that.

So, nowadays we seen how sensationalized weather is. I swear everything I see is doom and gloom just to generate clicks and further narratives.

Anyways, today into Turkey Day we have our first true bad cold front coming through.

High winds, and mix of precipitation for the travel days.

Saturday in A2 will be around 28-32 degrees during the game. Very light snow will be present. There was a dusting in 2021, so maybe akin to that. I wouldn't factor that to much into the capping. Maybe the QBs throwing a slippery ball here and there? Winds are 10-15 mph forecasted.

30 degrees between Noon and 4pm Sunday with chance of snow flurries?

Can Bryce keep that defense honest and stretch them a bit?

tOSU a great team but their schedule OMG. I don't want to hear about Arch in Game One either.

I would LOVE to see tOSU play Indiana or Georgia on a neutral.

I would pick IU and Jawja to win those.

tOSU has not been punched in the mouth yet.

I want to see their reaction when they are.

Think 1991 UNLV undefeated until the final 4 when they played Duke in the semis and lost.

Smith said on a podcast the other day "I should be good to play Saturday." Tate warmed up at Purdue and looked fine but then didn't play in that game or vs Butgers. Rumors have been flying about both of them all week in CBUS. The latest one I heard was Tate was out; Smith was in.
If they can play, they will play in AA. I see a zero percent chance of Ryan Day resting them considering his Cooper-ian record.

Do it!

I'll see ya down there ;).

So, I've never went to this "Game".

Years back Hunt and myself talked about heading down to C Bus. We never did and luckily don't have any scars. That's just a rough place to watch a game for opposing fans. Not the nicest people (not all, many ads phenomenal) at an event.

So, I was told last weekend there was a 50/50 shot my buddy had tickets coming in. Primo seats too.

That did fall through today.

I was content either way. Sure, I want to be there once and really take it in. With that being said, it's going to be colder than shit and getting out of A2 after a game is BRUTAL. So many good games Saturday that I'm happy enough to be home with some chilli and cornbread enjoying the day!

And yes, I'm a bitch lol. Since I caught the "C" three years ago, cold weather feels 5x colder to me. Ghost hands yo lol.

See ya in '27 Frank.

No doubt in my mind about Smith.

No doubt he does better than 35 yards this year.

And yeah, Day isn't coaching for his life today. The playoff format kinda saved that with a strong finish last year. But, a loss here is not good. This will be the easiest of the next 3 years to play UM. Time to put up or shut up.

It's gonna be a huge polar vortex with lake effect atmospheric rivers!!!!

Need a pick for Iowa/Neb 6.5 and Indiana/Purdue 28.5 for a pool.

Leaning Nub after that awful Iowa performance v MSU…

Awesome write up BAR!!! Quick question: I know Rolder has been banged up a bit and I heard Housman also was maybe questionable? Do you know anything about the status of those two?

Hey bud, happy Thanksgiving...

Hausman is an interesting situation...

I'm not sure exactly what happened in his life and frankly any mods/insiders on the team sites are being very sensitive staying information...

But I believe he'll play. He's been back practicing this week. Last week he had some interesting posts on SM. He was having an awakening of some sort? He did not travel to College Park..

Speaking of Jimmy Rolder, he indicated to the press on Tuesday that Ernest was practicing this week.

As far as Jimmy... He played 35 snaps last week. He should be a good factor.

Rolder is such a great example of a player growing. He was sent into this game on a whim back in 2023. Ohio State suddenly spotted him and attacked with the TE down the middle for a huge play to set up a score. A sobering moment but also a learning/teaching moment.

I hope that helps.

I'll grab more Hausman updates tomorrow night into Friday.

Rolder definitely was banged up before the bye but seemingly is solid now.

Sorry, when I made the 1st post in this thread I just kept typing and yada yada and realized it was near 3:30 am and never discussed these other games.

I'll get into these tomorrow night after we get back from Mom's. I'll look at the Friday games first.

Big game Saturday out in the Pacific Northwest!

This is fantastic! Wow, can't wait to dig into this some more this evening. Bravo, good sir!
Thank you.

I honestly wanted to do this a little bit better but I have a pretty solid effort. I think.

There is nothing quite like this rivalry in sports. Despite the constantly changing landscape of sports this is a constant.

Now l, has it changed? Sure. This used to be (more times than not) a game that decided who was heading to Pasadena. That was more last century but those were special times.

I think one of my favorite parts of this rivalry is the Ohio kids that come to Michigan and how they perform in these games. From Heisman winners Howard/Woodson sealing games in the 1990s with punt returns to Rod Moore calling "Game" with his interception in 2023... Special moments that mean more to these guys...

Maybe this year is Jordan Marshall's year to enter his name into that category of Ohio born n bred making the big moments happen in " The Game "...

That does go the other way as well -- never forget National Champ QB in 2003 Krenzel was from Metro Detroit.

Maybe so, maybe not, but I'm an OSU alum and a pretty big fan, and so far as I'm concerned, the national title was nice but no season that involves losing to UM is a true success so far as many players and alums are concerned and frankly I agree and think that's the way it should be. That's why it's the biggest and best rivalry in sports. Great writeup, B.A.R. - appreciate the time and heart that went into it. 48 hours and 54 minutes til the most important 4 hours of the year. I of course cannot say BOL so I'll say health and point out that neither program is what it is without the other. The game of college football is at its best when both programs are up and The Game means this much. Can't wait.

One thing I'm looking forward to seeing is how OSU handles their first possession on O. I have a sneaky suspicion that they will try to go up tempo on Saturday to break tendency (they of course have been the slowest-paced team in CFB this season). I think that might be a natural way to try to catch UM off-balance and break out of the rut of the ultra-conservative approach that has contributed to their downfall the past few years (esp in 2024). UM has been super aggressive and physical, and I think this OSU team is better equipped to handle the physical part (and UM of course doesn't have some of the game-wreckers on the DL from recent meetings), but if CRD turtles up again, they are vulnerable. He has to stay aggressive the way he has been since the Tennessee game last December, but that's not what he's done at all the past 4 meetings.

Totally agree with the comments (from Sherrone Moore to @Frank Costanza) that they just need to be close in the 4th quarter then expect OSU to start doubting themselves and gripping just when UM's physical style of play starts to pay dividends in the trenches. Best way to combat that of course is to get a lead and play from ahead then way ahead, but that's so much easier said than done when Sunday will be 6 years to the day since OSU last won The Game. I think that will be even more important if Tate is out or even limited. I'm not overly worried about Jeremiah Smith - I'm convinced he was created in a lab and probably just had to go in for a software update.

I think up tempo would work pretty well.

I don't care what era, two things I hate for Michigan defenses are running QBs and random up tempo offenses. I can already see the 12 men on the field or a corner being out of place!

Michigan definitely doesn't have the Hutch, Ojabo's, Mason Graham (shout-out Cleveland Browns) or Kenneth Grants. But, they still have some damn good ones. Time to show out.

OSU has slowly gotten to the point of being as physical as they should be for this game. Man, I remember when Michigan tried to go with fast receivers and more passing to counter OSU for a bit. That wasn't it. The trenches is where it's at! And they got back to basics. That's what won in '21 and '22. The 2023 game (which basically was the national championship game), showed a much more physical Buckeyes interior. Still, that year they were just a step behind. Just barely.

Last year? So many things. We kinda undervalued our defense because the switch to Wink was not without some issues the first month. Much like this year, the whole team started gelling after the late season bye. I think as fans, we saw our QB and WRs and didn't think we could score anything to challenge last year. Well, the defense took the challenge on. Turnovers and some key runs sparked a huge upset.

Still, that playoff run potentially doesn't happen in totality. I'm not saying they didn't deserve it, but that bracket worked out nicely and they played damn good when it counted. No game showed that more than the Rose Bowl.

So, back to your post -- Coach Day will be one we need to watch closely on Saturday. Let's see how he's reacting. When we have that first big decision, what does he do? Does he be aggressive at midfield or punt? For instance.

Okay, going to get moving on other games.... BRB...

Friday we have Nebraska and Iowa to start...

No clue what to think about the Hawkeyes after last week. Sparty played very well though. I have very little betting interest here to be honest.

Indiana beat Purdue 66-0 last year. So, yeah lol. Huge rivalry game here and a win cashes my Indiana UNDEFEATED bet. So, happy to grab a unit.

The biggest thing for Indiana here to think about is the Big Ten Champ game next week. Stay healthy and get ready. The Boilers have to be happy to end the season. I'll track this for a potential live opportunity.

33 hours away...

I may have missed with this on Tuesday night...

There isn't a Michigan player on roster that has lost to Ohio State.

There isn't a player on the Ohio State Roster that has beaten Michigan.

(I believe this is true, unless it's a random transfer -- Klatt stated this on his show).

No one in that Ohio State lockerroom has gold pants.

54 players on the Buckeyes Roster are from Ohio.

24 players on the Wolverines Roster are from Michigan

8 players on that roster are from Ohio.

What am I looking at? The guys from these areas understand the rivalry just a bit more than guys from say Texas.

Also, randomly, Ohio State is flying into Mich instead of bussing. This is a attempt to make this feel like a normal game.

That sums it up really well. Obviously, I pay a lot more attention to OSU players (interview, SM, etc.) than UM players, but I don't think I've heard gold pants mentioned so much in a short period of time, ever. I'm positive that, in OSU players' minds, this is their super bowl (and I know it's huge for UM players). Question is, is that ideal for OSU. Sure, it being important is essential, but sometimes, that can lead to holding on too tight/gripping at critical moments. We shall see.

I think flying is wise, esp with the weather. Heading back to OH from visiting family in the south for T'giving and I know we're heading into some weather. I'm just glad I'm out of SC and into an area where I can book plays other than with offshore outs.

25 hours, 19 minutes...

So, back to your post -- Coach Day will be one we need to watch closely on Saturday. Let's see how he's reacting. When we have that first big decision, what does he do? Does he be aggressive at midfield or punt? For instance.
This is exactly it. I think that CRD probably has work-shopped all sorts of situations in his head and feels he's done the homework so that he has a plan staked out for whatever arises during the game. Thing is, reality (and esp The Game) have a way of presenting you with situations you never envisioned. That's the beauty of it. Huge moments for CRD coming up and we'll all be watching.

Injury news...

Both the OSU guys seems good to go?

There was a chance Haynes was gonna go but smarter heads prevailed.

LB Hausman is back to OUT. Weird turn of events.

Hausman gotta be non injury related? And, I believe he deleted his Twitter (x) account.

Marshall in, sounds like Bredeson will give it a go. The way it should be. Hope everyone on both sides plays and leaves healthy to give us the best Game possible.

Health to all the UM fans on the board. GO BUCKS!

After consideration I had to put a unit on the Wolvs today. I think this will be a really fun game to watch.

Yeah Bredeson looks okay.

He definitely shouldn't be playing but he's the type of guy that defines this rivalry.

No pregame bets at all.

Gun to head I would take the points but that's only because I'd be forced.

1 turnover or less and win the Rushing battle for Mich -- that happens we'll have a 4th quarter game.

Nice one. Bryce looked scared to me today. Loss isn't on him, just would have liked to see him let it rip.

I actually thought opposite on him.

There was two pass plays in the 2h where he needed to go to next progression and those are 20-30 yard completion. Checking down quickly with short passes is about the only time I wasn't happy with him today.

I've seen him more scared and wild.

I was impressed he didn't force much today.

They knew between the bad pass protection we've had all year + their great secondary that passing would be very tough. At least down field.

The plan was to ride Marshall and I'm guessing designed runs.

That worked early, until the injury was re-aggravated. Once Jordan went down, that was it.

They could have unleashed him right then but that would have been a disaster waiting to happen.

Anyways, back to your point... I think Underwood stayed within himself today. Part of growing is being consistent in progressions. That was his downfall in the 3rd. Excited to see him with the news receivers next year + a healthy backfield.

Add in Hiter coming into the fold, exciting times for this offense.

Nice win guys.

I wish Mich had their full team but that's life.

Should be a helluva atmosphere next week.
