not sure why ajjohnson is on there a bunch of times?

I don't think there is as much seperation between these two teams as most people think. SMU has played much better down the stretch (beating Tulsa to become bowl eligible), and has played a much tougher overall schedule IMO. While Fresno has a decisive advantage at the skill positions, I think SMU is better in the trenches on both sides of the ball. I also can't bet against June Jones on the island playing in a bowl game he has owned. Despite my best efforts I have not been able to find out who is officiating this game, but I would not be shocked if SMU gets a lot of favorable calls in this game.

SMU +12

The game in which Smu beat Tulsa was a horrible spot for Tulsa, after playing Ucf and before conference championship, again vs Ucf. Smu had a big lead and Tulsa was coming back at the end, treating that game like it never happened.

My question for you..is do u think SMU can slow Fresno down tho..they seem to be hot and hitting their stride at the right time...i'm just worried Fresno puts up another 40 points and with that being said..i'm not sure that SMU can score enough points or am i overlooking SMU's D?

9-10 wins teams favored in bowl games against 6 wins teams were upset every time since 2008 and they are 0-11 ATS in last 11 games.
Can SMU upset Fresno ? I say yes.

6 wins dogs of 7 points or more in bowl games covered 9 of last 11 games, winning outright 7 times.
6 wins teams always want to prove that they belong to the postseason.

Teams with 11 ATS wins during regular season lost 3 of 4 bowl games and went 1-3 ATS.
Not surprising, as lines in Bowl games are inflated on those money teams during the regular season.

Bowl game dogs of 5 or more points and less than 15 points covered all 10 games if they won their final regular season game as underdogs and their opponent won its final game as well.

SMU was underdog in two of their last three bowl games and did very well in that role. 28-6 upset win against Pittsburgh last year and 45-10 dog win against Nevada three years back. Fresno 0-6 ATS as bowl favorites since 1991, losing every one of those games outright. The history is on the SMU side.

The Tulsa game was a combination of spot and match up. SMU good defending run compared to pass and Tulsa has Cody Green at "QB" and prefers to run.

Chance of showers in Hawaii but not sure if they are the mist type that they get there or a real rain. Will be more second half than first by forecast.

Obviously some motivation for Jones personally.

One of the two biggest stats of the game is turnovers. That will go a long way in SMU being able to compete or not

In the SMU six wins they were +7 ( 10 ), +2 (3), +7 (9), +1 (2), +2 (2), +3 (3). That is plus 22 turnovers and 29 turnoves forced in those six games.

Read a lot of Fresno quotes, almost everything the players had to say about their season was in the past tense. Basically the best possible sign for smu backers.

let me just point out that we all know what Fresno's capable of on offense: 40.3 ponits per game, Carr 36 TD's/5 INT's but they are not just offense, they rank #19 in total defense and #4 vs pass.

and tough to knock Fresno's schedule when on 2nd game of season loss @ Ore 42-25, 4th game of season loss @ Tulsa (team im very high on) 27-26 and loss @ Boise St 20-10. Not that these are world beaters but wins over bowl teams: Sd St, Air Force and Nevada.

I think Play hit this one on the head. It is not just the fact that SMU is a 6-6 squad but rather that they are a 6-6 squad in C-USA this year. Stilling from VK what would you make Fresno State vs. ULL and ECU vs. SMU?

The 10-14 points is about right for this game and don't forget that Fresno State's past issues in bowl season were under Pat Hill not DeRuyter. Fresno State is going to run the ball at will with Rouse and Carr should throw for 250+. Smu will need 3 TO's to keep this contest from being 14+.

I like FSU and it was at 11.5 this morning, just got home and see that it's now 12.5. I was expecting it to go the other way with all of the SMU talk. May wait until half to get involved but I also like FSU TT O 35.5.

Not exaggerating when I say that 90% of the plays I've seen are on Fresno today. In absolutely no way whatsoever is smu a popular play today, whichever way you wanna slice it.

I didn't base that off of seeing any plays, sorry I should have been more clear. Seems as though there is a fair amount of SMU love here though which I would expect. Agree with wolfpack that there will be some scoring.

My question for you..is do u think SMU can slow Fresno down tho..they seem to be hot and hitting their stride at the right time...i'm just worried Fresno puts up another 40 points and with that being said..i'm not sure that SMU can score enough points or am i overlooking SMU's D?

I absolutely think it's possibile for Fresno to score 40+ points tonight. If they do, they probably win & cover, becasue I don't think SMU can score that much. Although I think Fresno can, I don't think they will. They have not shown that type offensive prowess against the stronger teams they have faced this season. I know this sounds really cliche, but I think turnovers will be particularly huge in this game. Fresno has really feasted off the turnovers. In the 5-game stretch run that everyone is raving about, the defense got a pick 6 against Wyoming and New Mexico, forced 3 turnovers against Hawaii, score 3 touchdowns against Nevada, and force 3 more turnovers against Air Force. If SMU does what these 5 teams did, Fresno will most likely win and cover. But if SMU protects the football - and Gilbert has been doing a great job of that lately - and doesn't lose the turnover battle, this will be a close game. In fact I'll go out on a limb here and say if SMU wins the battle of turnover margin, they'll win this game outright.

I think you may be overlooking SMU's strength at the point of attack. That has been the strength of this team all season. I think SMU will win in the trenches on both sides of the ball.

I wanted to play SMU all week, but, when it finally came time to make the play I went with the Overs for both Halfs and laying the points...sigh, not a fav bettor, but, ive personally seen FSU and I don't foresee many stops by SMU.

besides to's, 3rd downs and special teams very important in these bowl games, statistically Fresno has edge in all 3. That being said does not mean they cover 12.5 automatically, i see Fresno by 14+ but have them teased at -5.5 and also played tt over. GL and Happy Holidays.

Can say that Fresno didn't score as much against competition but where does smu sit as far as quality?

Smu +12 TO's
Fresno St +17 TO's

Smu #23 KO's
Fresno St #62 KO's

Smu #112 vs KO's
Fresno St #61 vs KO's

Smu #80 converting 3rd downs
Fresno St #55 converting 3rd downs

Smu #75 defending 3rd downs
Fresno St #20 defending 3rd downs

Carr 17 TD/1 INT last 5 games

Another thing that is eating me about this game is the officiating crew. I have tried to find out what conference is officiating the game, but have been unable to locate that info. Hawaii is well known for their corrupt officiating, and something in the back of my head keeps telling me that June Jones is going to get all the calls tonight.

Anyone know of the ATS record for 1st year coaches in bowl games? I've been told its not very good.

for anyone live betting this could be useful: Over the past two-plus seasons, SMU is 14-0 when scoring first, but 0-14 when the opponent scores first.

I can't find the link, but I saw the stat earlier this morning about fifty articles ago, and it was not good. But for what it's worth, DeRuyter has been to an earlier Hawaii Bowl as an assistant coach.
