Before I post my picks I want to post this article. I think it's interesting for you guys to read.

Behind the Bets

When the playoffs roll in, the linesmakers turn to you for help.

<H7>by Chad Millman

Four road favorites to open the Wild Card round of the NFL playoffs? It's historic! It's unfathomable! It's the British laying points to beat the Colonies!

But you know what makes this moment even more special? The postseason is the one time in the NFL calendar when bookmakers care about you, John Q. Public, much more than they care about the wiseguys.

It never works this way. Bookmakers—whether they're running a shop in Vegas, a web-site based in Antigua, or a corner in Brooklyn—always keep an eye on the $10 and $20 bets coming in from the squares, but what they really sweat are the nickel and dime bets made by wiseguys. One nickel ($500) on the favorite from a well-respected pro will move a line from seven to seven-and-a-half a lot faster than five dimes ($5,000) from nobodies.
But strategies, be it for bookmaker or wiseguy, always change come playoff time. With fewer teams to study, linemakers construct even smarter spreads than the freakishly accurate numbers they hang during the season (in Week 17, Packers-Lions and Skins-Niners both finished within a half-point of the opening number). That means pro bettors, who make their money on the tiny differences between their power ratings and the spreads posted by bookmakers, find slim pickings. "The more data you get the more accurate the predictions, so lines are pure in the playoffs; it's tough to find an edge," says Baker, a wiseguy who goes by his last name (seriously, that's how everyone in Vegas knows him). "I might find one game I want to bet on."
"The more data you get the more accurate the predictions, so lines are pure in the playoffs; it's tough to find an edge," says Baker. "I might find one game I want to bet on."
In other words, betting in the postseason is so tricky even the wiseguys don't bother. So, without much pro money coming in—or to protect themselves—bookmakers start channeling Oprah. What do you want, John Q? Who do you like? How do you feel? They're almost entirely focused on the public's betting hopes and desires. Suckers.

That's what makes all the fuss about this weekend so interesting. You may be shocked that the roadies are getting so much love, but you shouldn't be. Deep down, it's how you really feel.

Consider these factors that you, no doubt a very sophisticated bettor, are thinking about right now whether you know it or not: Three of the four home teams (the Chargers, Dolphins and Vikings) didn't wrap up their division titles until the last day. That doesn't inspire betting confidence. Meanwhile three of the road teams (the Colts, Falcons and Ravens) locked up playoff spots weeks ago. Bettors like that. And your subconscious probably hasn't forgotten that the past three Super Bowl winners (the Giants, Colts and Steelers) had to pack their bags during the playoffs.

John Avello, who runs the book at the Wynn in Las Vegas, understands all this. He left Poughkeepsie for Vegas 30 years ago, started as a dealer in the black jack pits and has worked as a bookmaker for the past 25 years. There's very little in the gaming industry he hasn't experienced. Except for, you know, making all four home playoff teams dogs. "Never seen it, never done it," he says.
Now, a lot went into his linemaking strategy for this weekend, he says, such as:
Falcons minus-1.5 over the Cards: "Atlanta doesn't have a lot of experience but scores a lot of points. And the Cards haven't played with much intensity since they locked it up."
Eagles minus-3 over the Vikes: "Philly is on a roll."
Colts minus-1.5 over the Bolts: "Everyone has seen this Chargers offense the past few weeks, but the Colts aren't afraid of anyone."
Ravens minus-3 over the Fins: "Baltimore is 6-2 on the road against the spread. Miami is 2-6 at home against the spread."
But really, more than anything else, John says he and every other bookmaker based this week's numbers on you. Really. It is, in his words, "What we believe the public is thinking about right now."
And what you're thinking is that the Cards lolligagged into the playoffs while the Falcons are a year away from winning it all; that the gimmick-heavy Fins offense is no match for a Ravens team that has never been so well balanced; that the Vikes barely beat the Giants second-stringers in Week 17 while the Iggles D could shut out the 1999 Rams right now; and that in a Colts-Chargers game of evenly matched talents, Tony Dungy will find a way to gut it out (or, just as likely, Norv Turner will find a way to muck it up.)
You're thinking there's no way these road teams don't payoff.
Funny, everyone who had the British routing George Washington's men thought the same thing.

Ok, here are my picks:

1/3/09

Atlanta - 2 1/2 @ Arizona.....X-Factor = Kurt Warner

Indianapolis PK @ San Diego...I'll take Dungy with Manning in a big game any day. Look out for the Manning 2 minute drill and the end of the game (if needed) haha.

1/4/09

Baltimore @ Miami + 3 1/2(5Dimes)
Miami ML +168
I think the fairytale ending continues. I think we will see a different Flacco in a BIG game in a hostile environment. Flacco folds. The Fins leave it on the field Sunday. Expect an amazing performance by the Miami "D" , and from Ricky Williams, Brown, and Pennington.
Tail at your own risk, this could be a Homer Play ;)

Philly @ Minnesota +3....Philly shot their load in that Dallas game.

Guys, I wish you the best of luck anyway you play it. Lets finish the year with a bang!

:cheers::cheers::cheers::cheers:

thanks for the article. good read.
with you on 3 of 4, but like the eagles d to focus on ap and the run and make TJ beat them. He has played better lately but just can't see putting money on him.
good luck this weekend
:shake:

I hate the Unicorns this weekend as they're a team that's way overdue to running into a team at the wrong time and I don't see them winning this game but I like the rest of your picks. GL shark.

Thanks guys. I'm keeping my eyes open on that Atlanta/Zona game. It appears that Line opened at 3, it's down to 2 1/2 but 85% of the money is still coming in on Atlanta. This is starting to look like a reverse line movement. If more money comes in on Atlanta and the line drops any further, Hammer Arizona.

Was going to sit out the playoffs but i have a feeling about the Cards....Going to look that one over ...Hope your Fins come thru, hate for my steelers to face them Ravens again

shark,
if you don't mind me asking where do get your numbers bet on each side? i see the line has dropped but was wondering where you found 85% bet on atl.?
thanks

The line on IND / SD must be a Joke or I may say : INSULTING ! Colts by 2TD !

FREE MONEY ( LOL... I know nothing is FREE ) from LVSC !

Yes JoJo. I think it should be insulting to the Colts organization. The only player I truly fear in that SD team is LT. The guy is a beast but Colts have a plan for him, I'm sure. I dont think much of Rivers. Colts D should stop him and Manning should have a field day. Dungy will outcoach Turner :smiley_acbe:

My Lord, almost all the money is coming in on the favorites and the books havent changed the lines !! This is looking more and more like a doggie kind of week-end. I'm starting to get nervous on that Atlanta pick. Gonna wait till last minute and watch the line moves. Same holds true for Indy although I believe the public is right on this one at a PK.

gl spanish - gonna be on AZ, like Indy

intially thought philly was the play, but I just can't trust that team especially on the road - might play a little Vikes ML

Happy new year Shark.

I can't bring my self to play any of the home doggies, I can't make a strong case for any of them.

Tito, Streakin, Yanks.....Thanks alot guy, I hope you all cash

Wikey....Be careful. So far almost all the money is coming in on the favorites and the books have not adjusted the lines, except the Ravens line that has adjusted 1/2 a point. I dont think the books take a bloodbath in the playoffs. Know what I mean? I'm even having second thoughts about the play I made on Atlanta but it will be a last minute thing if I reverse it or not. I'm sticking with them for now. You know, sometimes Vegas throws us a bone just to keep us biting. Lots of games left. :shake:

Thanks for the warning, I'm very wary of the favs too.

Having looked further into it, I can make a case for the Cards, playing at home with Boldin back, but so far not the other three dogs.

Hey Shark,

What do you think about the over in the ATL/ARI game (51)? I think it might be a stronger play than picking a side (ATL also if I had to pick)....

bol shark...i like all of them except atl...i just cant bet on a rookie qb during the playoffs

I had a total of 54 but I have a gut feeling it goes under. Don't follow me on that cause thats why I didn't play it. :shake:

Thanks Measy. I just rather play on a rookie than play on Kurt Warner. He's burned me so many times it's pathetic. Lets make some cash today

Shark, great job so far here in 2009! How is the line movement looking for the Atlanta game, I see the line is down to 1 in some spots right now?

Atlanta has gone to +2 and it is as it should be with all the money takenb in on Atlanta. The books want even money on both sides. No alarm for me. I really would have been concerned if the line didnt move. I'm making another play on Atlanta in a minute.

Huh?, according to your logic the line should have moved opposite.

Guys, the play is Arizona......I fucked up, brain warp. I'm screwed because I just emptied that account for this week-end after betting some more on Atlanta. This is definitely sfishy and I would play on Arizona now. Fuck me twice. :hang::hang:

Cool it Shark, according to my experience this kind of exaggerated line movement from -2,5 to +2 is just a sign that nobody knows the fuck about what they are doing. Let the lemmings copulate...

Damn it.....is it an Omen? How could I do that? I've been saying this all week then I do the opposite??? I'm not right. I was warned by JoJo too and I totally had a brain fart.

glad to see you on vikes shark! had a huge lean on the ATL but with that line movement its just to much to go wit the falcons! playin zona! BOL BRO

You still have time to call CUSTOMER SERVICE and cancel your wagered ! You have 45 mins left

I'm afraid to do it now JoJo. Call it superstition. Someone wants me to keep my Atlanta bet. Fuck it. :shake:

So do you want me to say :Atlantic Casinos Slogan in the 90' ? LOL...

BET WITH YOUR HEAD , NOT OVER IT ...

If I hadn't taken out all that cash I would have reversed it again. I saved some in there just for that if it came down to it and instead I threw it all on Atlanta!! I will either be very pissed by the end of the game or I'll be a very happy man. Either way, I'll make up for it.

Hope you guys cashed cause I crashed. I need to get the next one.

Looked good at half, but the Falcons pretty much bungled the game away.

Good luck going forward.

NFL Season 55% 98-80 on sides and totals (Full games only)
Play-Off Record 0-3

Totally shit the bed yesterday losing my college play and both NFL although the Arizona game was my own cluster F**K after I warned myself about that line move from the very begining if you read this thread. I appologize to anyone who tailed that game.

If everything repeats itself like yesterday, then we have a great shot with the home dogs today. I have 3 plays today.

Miami + 3 1/2
Miami ML +168
Minnesota +3

These lines were locked in on 12/30/2008

Good luck to everyone and I hope we cash today.
