The early Derby favorite in the early betting pools has been Verrazano, off two impressive victories in Gulfstream. Pletcher ships him across the state for his first time against stakes company and first time around 2 turns. The ML 4-5 favorite figures to be forwardly placed and fighting for the early lead with Falling Sky, who took the G3 Sam F. Davis here in Tampa on Feb. 2. A couple of other pretty good horses (Acclaim and Gunderman) battled Verrazano early before falling away down the stretch and I expect the same thing for Falling Sky in this race. Honorable Dillon, winner of the G2 Hutchenson at Gulfstram, figures to be sitting a couple lengths behind the leaders and should be able to get first run on the leaders. I'll be looking for Dynamic Sky, second to Falling Sky in the Sam F. Davis, to be passing horses in the lane and possibly catching Verrazano near the wire. Park City and Java's War could also be up for a minor price passing tiring horses if the pace falls apart.

San Felipe is another race where we should see an honest pace as the Baffert trained winner of the G2 robert B. Lewis, Flashback likes to be on the lead and will be pressed by the G3 Sham winner, Goldencents. The morning work tabs for both horses have been impressive leading up to this race and both look primed for this one. The main benefactor from the dueling going on early may be Hear the Ghost. The Ghostzapper gelding will be stretching out for the first time but Hollendorfer did work him a couple of times at 7F and everything indicates the distance should not be a factor. Flashback and Goldencents could battle it down to the wire but I'm gonna look for Hear the Ghost and possibly Omega Star to catch the 2 frontrunners.

Race 6: #2 Rattlesnake Bridge is obviously the class of the field, but hasn't been on the track since the 2011 Breeders Cup Classic and I think he wants to run at distances over the one turn mile, will include in exotics. #6 Hello Prince should get the lead over the #1 Black Diamond Cat, Hello Prince finally got a surface he liked this year and was just short of winning at 27-1 in his last, I think he will leave Black Diamond Cat and will hold on against a late moving #4 St. Moose and #3 Isutalkintome.
