Official New Orleans Saints Thread 2009-2010

Saints signed FS Darren Sharper, formerly of the Vikings.

Free safety has been a trouble area in New Orleans since Sean Payton took over as coach. It's just hard to imagine Sharper being the answer. There's a reason nobody else gave the 33-year-old a serious look and he's no longer a playmaker. Sharper brings some leadership, but coordinator Gregg Williams will have to generate more pass rush for this defense to truly improve. Mar. 18 - 6:32 pm et

Anything is better than Kaesvirharn...

Saints released CB Mike McKenzie.

The 33-year-old is recovering from a fractured kneecap after spending last offseason rehabbing a torn ACL. The move was expected after the signing of Jabari Greer and saves the Saints $4.575 million in cap room. Greer and last year's second-rounder Tracy Porter are the likely starters at corner with Randall Yag in the nickel role. Mar. 19 - 6:24 pm et

New Orleans Saints agree to deal with veteran safety Pierson Prioleau

The Saints have agreed to a one-year deal with veteran free agent safety Pierson Prioleau, who will likely compete for a job as a backup and special teams contributor.

Prioleau, 31, is clearly a favorite of new Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams. He has spent a total of seven seasons playing under Williams - last year with the Jacksonville Jaguars, with the Washington Redskins from 2005-2007, and with the Buffalo Bills from 2001-2003.

Prioleau played in all 16 games last year in Jacksonville with one start, recording 26 tackles and one pass defense. The 5-11, 188-pounder began his career in San Francisco in 1999, where he emerged as a part-time starter. He had his most productive season in Buffalo in 2002, starting all 16 games and recording 89 tackles.
The Saints needed depth at the safety position to join Darren Sharper, Roman Harper, Kevin Kaesviharn and Chris Reis. They'd still like to get younger in the draft, though, and Coach Sean Payton said Wednesday that the free safety spot is still the Saints' greatest area of need.

Usama Young also could move from CB to FS. either way I dont know what we are doing for the draft

and surprise surprise Sean Payton is talking RBs in the draft, Beanie Wells and Knowshon...

yea saw that.

what I dont get is why every mock draft says were gonna draft Malcom Jenkins and move him to Safety. Guess in the future... idk whatever. I want a LB. Thats it

I'm personally hoping that we can trade down and pick up another draft pick or two. But would there be any takers there?? It would be nice to get one of those picks back that we gave away for Shockey. But if we do stay put, then I believe Jenkins has to be our pick.

Lance Moore, Jahri Evans signed their tenders with New Orleans Saints

Saints wide receiver Lance Moore and guard Jahri Evans have signed their tendered one-year contract offers, General Manager Mickey Loomis said Friday.
Evans agreed to a one-year, $2.792 million contract and Moore a one-year deal worth $1.545 million. Both were restricted free agents.
Two other former restricted free agents - guard Zach Strief and cornerback Leigh Torrence - have not signed their tendered one-year offers of $1.542 million and $1.01 million, respectively.
In other developments, Saints free safety Darren Sharper finally has claimed a jersey number. He will wear No. 42, a number that originally belonged to cornerback Jason David.
David will now wear No. 29. Sharper wore No. 42 for the Minnesota Vikings.
Saints fans can read what they want into David's jersey change.

New Orleans Saints Coach Sean Payton discusses Day 2 draft picks

It's hard to keep track with so many new defensive backs in New Orleans, but Saints Coach Sean Payton just laid out the early plan:

First-round pick Malcolm Jenkins will start out at cornerback, fourth-round pick Chip Vaughn will start out at free safety, and third-year veteran Usama Young will be moved to free safety.

So the depth chart now looks like this, with a lot of wiggle room in the pecking order:

CB - Tracy Porter, Jabari Greer, Randall Yag, Malcolm Jenkins, Leigh Torrence, Jason David
FS - Darren Sharper, Pierson Prioleau, Chip Vaughn, Usama Young
SS - Roman Harper, Chris Reis

Wow. That's drastically different from a year ago. That unit has undergone quite a makeover. Throw in new defensive coordinator Gregg Williams and second-year secondary coach Dennis Allen, and you can see that the
Saints have placed a huge emphasis on shoring up their biggest weakness.

Among other topics Payton just addressed:
Fellow fourth-round pick Stanley Arnoux will start out at weakside linebacker in New Orleans, with the versatility to move inside if necessary.

He said no one on the Saints' staff had real close personal ties to Wake Forest, but he said it's an impressive up-and-coming program that was special to watch on tape, especially on defense.

He said the Saints didn't strongly consider trading up into Round 3, and they weren't tempted to target a running back. He said these two guys were graded higher than any tailbacks on the draft board. At this stage of the draft, Payton said, you're looking for the best available player -- like a Carl Nicks last year.

"I've mentioned before, we'd like a big back. But I don't want to try to manufacture a pick. That's where you get yourself in trouble," Payton said.

WHY???

New Orleans Saints pick punter Thomas Morstead in

the fifth round of the NFL draft

The; New Orleans Saints traded up into the fifth round to pick Thomas Morstead, a punter from Southern Methodist.
The trade was this year's seventh round pick and a fifth round pick in 2010 for Philadelphia's fifth round pick this year.

Jenkins too big not agile enough to be effective CB in sunday league.

I wanted to draft "I've shot up so many roids call my ass a pin" cushing to provide some competition to Shanle.

Greer = jason david

Another 8-8 year IMO

I hope your wrong. I think we will be solid bro. But you never know. I think we go 11-5 imo but i am a homer.

It really depends what GW can do with the defense. Offensively we will be fine.

Saints get fill of undrafted free agents

New Orleans gets tailbacks Donaldson, Hill into the fold
Tuesday, April 28, 2009 By Mike Triplett
Staff writer for The Times-Picayune

The Saints finally have a choice among some power-running tailbacks. According to published reports, they agreed to deals with undrafted free agents Herb Donaldson from Western Illinois and P.J. Hill from Wisconsin.
Although they remain long shots to make the Saints' roster, they fit the profile. Donaldson (5 foot 10, 222 pounds) pounder was described by NFLDraftScout.com as a "bowling ball" of a running back, and he led all Division I-AA runners in both rushing (162.2 yards per game) and scoring (12.0 points per game).
Hill, 5-10, 222-pounds, ranked third on the Badgers' career rushing list with 3,802 yards, even though he left school a year early to declare for the draft. Two DUI citations, the latest on March 16, may have hurt his draft stock.

Donaldson's 1,784 rushing yards and 21 touchdowns last year ranked second in school history behind none other than longtime Saints tailback Aaron Stecker. Stecker is currently a free agent who could potentially re-sign with New Orleans before the season.
Donaldson ran for more than 1,400 yards in three consecutive years, finishing his career with 4,746 rushing yards and 50 rushing touchdowns. Among his most impressive performances was last year's season opener at Arkansas, in which he ran for 157 yards and scored two touchdowns.
The knocks on both backs are against their speed and versatility.
To earn a spot on the Saints' roster, they'll have to compete with two other young power backs who also began their careers as undrafted free agents. Mike Bell started out with the Denver Broncos in 2006 after going undrafted out of Arizona. Hamilton signed with the Saints last year after the draft and spent the season on New Orleans' practice squad.
Starting tailback Pierre Thomas also was "discovered" by the Saints as an undrafted free agent out of Illinois in 2007.
Saints Coach Sean Payton said the team has high hopes for Bell and Hamilton, which is the main reason why the Saints didn't target any other tailbacks in the draft after they failed to trade up for Ohio State's Chris "Beanie" Wells in the first round.
Now, however, it looks like those guys have some competition.

The Saints haven't released any names of undrafted free agents who have agreed to deals, but the following players also have been confirmed through league sources and published reports:
-- UCLA quarterback Patrick Cowan (6-4, 218) served as an undergraduate assistant with the Bruins last year after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee during spring practices.
He also was limited to five games as a junior in 2007 due to injuries. He threw for 15 touchdowns and 11 interceptions in his abbreviated career, making 12 starts.

-- Wisconsin outside linebacker Jonathan Casillas (6-1, 228) had a fourth- to fifth-round grade on NFLDraftScout.com.
He suffered a knee injury during fall camp last year that left him limited all season, but he still appeared in 10 games with 62 tackles. Another fast athlete, he played weakside linebacker in college, where he'll likely line up in New Orleans. Scouts believe he also could make the move to strong safety.
-- Stanford center Alex Fletcher (6-2, 297) was the 12th-rated center in the draft according to NFLDraftScout. A four-year starter in college, he impressed scouts at the NFL combine by benching the third most reps of 225 pounds (30).
-- Kent State offensive tackle Augustus Parrish (6-4, 303) was rated as a top-20 offensive tackle by many draft analysts because of his athleticism and potential.
A three-year starter at left tackle, he helped the Golden Flashes rank 11th in the nation in rushing last year (230.6 yards per game). He didn't get the most out of his potential in college but had an impressive showing during the week of the East-West Shrine Game.
-- Texas guard Cedric Dockery (6-3, 314) is the younger brother of current NFL standout Derrick Dockery.
Scouts believe he was inconsistent in college, but he was a second-team all-conference selection by The Associated Press and has an enticing combination of power and athleticism.
-- Texas A&M cornerback Danny Gorrer (6-0, 185) suffered a torn ACL during his junior season in 2007 and played sparingly in 2008.
But impressive workouts and fast 40-yard dash times put him back on the radar leading into the draft.
-- Portland State cornerback Reggie Jones (6-0, 193) impressed scouts with a 40-yard dash time of 4.43 seconds, but his playing career is spotty.
He had four interceptions and 28 tackles last season after transferring from Idaho State, where he was dismissed for violating team rules. His early years were cut short by a detached retina and ankle injury.
-- Louisville receiver Chris Vaughn (6-3, 224) doesn't have much of a track record either, due partly to injuries.

Saints shopping for backfield help?

Upon the release of Edgerrin James earlier this week, the New Orleans Saints were mentioned as a possible destination, given the Saints current backfield situation: somewhat untested Pierre Thomas looking to build on his 129-carry 2008 season, and electrifying yet injury-prone Reggie Bush as the X factor. There's another option if the Saints don't land James, that being a trade. In his Diner Morning News column today, Michael Lombardi of the National Football Post throws out the possibility that the Saints could be calling teams around the league to assess the availability of some superfluous runners. In particular, Lombardi mentions the Denver Broncos - who have a veritable army of backs on the roster after a free agency bonanza and drafting of Knowshon Moreno - the Dallas Cowboys - a team that will begin 2009 with a three-headed monster in the backfield if no changes are made - and the New York Jets - who have yet to appease Thomas Jones with a new deal.
Of those three, the most likely deal would be made with the Broncos. The new management duo of coach Josh McDaniels and Brian Xanders has proven they don't let emotional ties get in the way of improving the team, as franchise quarterback Jay Cutler was first denigrated in the media and then traded away to the Chicago Bears. To this end, it wouldn't be surprising to see the Broncos trade away some other holdovers from the previous administration, and either Peyton Hillis, Ryan Torain or Selvin Young could be had on the cheap.
The Saints don't have much to spend under the salary cap - some estimates have them about $2 million under the cap number after signing their rookie class - but that could be enough room to sign Edge to an incentive-laden deal. Failing that, a trade would seem quite likely.

I like the Hill pickup, although I think Foster was the best undrafted RB. Offensive will be fine, nawlins, as it has been the past 3 yrs, but not since the Rams of early 2000 has a one sided team succeeded (ravens had a great running game to go with that defense in 2002). reNew, even if we stay healthy, I think the harder schedule keeps us around the same win total.

i'll say one thing, go ahead and mark the patriots game as a loss and we have just 15 games left to sweat. also, expecting 8-8 rather than 11-5 (nawlins) I can be "pleasantly" surprised when we go 9-7 :)

one of our 4th round picks LB Stanely Arnoux for the year, tore his achilles. Looks likes Scott Shanle's all but solidified his starting spot once again...
