It's time to break these traditional conference bowl affiliations. I haven't seen all of the bowls but just speaking from a Utah fan perspective Utah vs Nebraska is 🤮. I was hoping for Utah Iowa.

My thought..... since everyone from 12 to 16 is bitching about not getting in to the CFP, why not have 13 vs 14, 15 vs 16 on down?

It would make for much better bowl games and I think the teams would actually have more incentive to show up. There would also be less prima Donna players skipping bowls. After 25 who gives a shit, let whoever play whoever.

The NCAA is obviously too stupid to integrate this but I think it would make for some really good bowl matchups.

He still hasn't announced but I'm 95% certain that it is. Scalley is ready to be HC and he thought it was his this year before Whit came back. He could really mess things up if he causes Scalley to walk.
 
The Bowl season has been destroyed. I’m someone who used to watch every single game. Im asking myself if I’ll watch any of them outside the playoffs until late December. Might as well open up the playoffs to 16 teams and be done with Bowl season.

I don't blame any top tier team kids not wanting to play in a meaningless bowl game. Making CFP is everything. They all make good money now and want a break and to go on vacation (I wont say study for finals as thatcis obsolete now too). Football is a brutal sport on the body. One game could ruin your career injury wise. ND, Texas, Vandy, etc. Like it or not it's a business now more than ever. Bowl games are obsolete for teams fighting to get into CFP.

That's called life. We all have things not go our way but we still have to go to work, provide for our family, etc.

Not to mention alienating the fanbase? If you lose the fans you lose your collegiate gravy train. I don't think skipping bowl games teaches these young men anything of value.

So why not opt out of the season once a player realizes their team is eliminated from postseason? It’s called opportunity and obligation. The opportunity to play in a Bowl game to showcase your skills to the NFL. Now that they’re getting paid, where’s the obligation to fulfill their commitment to the season?
I’ve never seen a sport so ass backwards. I see a sport that is jeopardizing a major collapse if they don’t get this system fixed.
College football has become an absolute embarrassment with this way of doing business.
 
If I was an NFL GM, I would def speak out publicly about this.

I want players who see through their commitments and don't put business decisions ahead of their team or their fans. I wouldn't want a player like that in my org.

And why does it matter if half the team isn't going to be there next season? Big 12 fined ISU and KSU $500k each and said done with it. With the new windows, ISU might not be able to field a team next season if the sole focus the next month isn't on retaining and recruiting. Pretty simple.

Sport's great for the teams consistently fighting for playoffs. Terrible for us middling teams that are very excited for a season and now won't play for the 4th 9-win season in school history. Not really the desire to go back for regular season games now, at least bowls were a way to meet up with old friends but the way it's set up now, I'm sure no one wanted to go back to Memphis for the 3rd time in 7 years or whatever. Rather have a team that won't lose 10 games next season.
 
I get the whole committed thing. I hate nil and revenue share making 18 year old kids millionaires. But it's reality and never going back. The NFL wants talent period. They have tape on regular season games. Joey Bosa sat out early and didn't impact him at all. And Ohio state survived. Personally I think nil contracts should restrict transferring and require bowl participation (or the kid gives back all or some %) but im assuming those restrictions aren't done cause they're illegal. CF has come down to the P4 being the NFL minor leagues with the kids, coaches etc making big $. Besides making money all they care about is making the CFP. And with football players always 1 play from career ending injury bowl games are becoming obsolete. And if im a fan of a top tier school do I care about non cfb bowls? Do ND fans really want to see them play BYU in a meaningless game? I know i can care less but maybe they do. But the kids don't want to risk their $ on injury and i don't blame them. It's all a business now and all the parties are going to protect their financial interest first. $$ first then maybe loyalty etc.

Curious how it would be illegal to have certain stipulations in a contract?

Again, this is the wild West still and until we have our final product we're going to have frustration on many levels.

I would like to see a one time transfer stipulation at some point. Or, something similar to that. That allows for coaching changes, family issues and simply playing time issues.

We just saw a fun NIL concept out in Vegas for the CBB tournament.

Maybe devise something similar for the second tier bowls?
 
Bowls are a struggle for schools already who have to guarantee selling tickets. Usually a losing proposition for most but ISU have been fortunate to sell allotments. Not the case for many. Can't imagine what that would do for multiple games. Football IS NOT basketball. Wish the comparisons would stop there.

Every bowl game awarding NIL money to the institutions would be the incentives, not the athletes.
 
Every school that played in the Vegas tournament had to sell an allotment of tickets that required sessions, like March Madness (so including another game you might or might not be interested in). That works for a 3-4 day trip to Vegas.

We can't do a damn thing

Practicality is why teams will continue to choose to not go to bowl games. The extra practices will only matter if your team will still be part of the team the next season and as the transfer portal goes, that's very unlikely. Now throw in this early signing date and no Spring portal, it's a really bad idea to waste the month of December in flux.

I think BAR's idea is the one that works to save bowls. The sponsors will need to include NIL money with a larger portion of it going to the winner. The institutions can do what they need to do to retain their rosters by splitting it however they see fit. I could see this going in that direction.

this is exactly what I was telling a friend. the bowls have become the NIT. For G5 that don't make huge NIL and mostly dont aspire to the CFP bowls are probably the goal.

I'm just assuming they have been advised legally against doing it since none appear to be doing it. If up to me, kids getting NIL would have to sign a legal agreement saying they can't transfer unless they pay back all their NIL (unless coach leaves). I would also limit kids to 1 transfer but again not sure you can do any of this legally. It is wild west but 100% in favor of players right now - trial lawyers and agents saw to that. NCAA went from all powerful and corrupt to impotent.
 
Definitely structure NIL deals where money comes back if you sit out a bowl game or transfer before your contract is up. It's not like these deals are only good for the season. I'm guessing they are 1 full year for the most part.

I think it stems from the fact that NIL can't be "pay for play." If some Chevy dealership in Green Bay pays a WR to be a spokesperson, then that WR goes to Detroit as a FA, he doesn't have to pay back the $ he made from doing the commercials. I'm not sure if revenue share $ can be tied to playing and being on the team

exactly what I was thinking - somehow pay them but isn't bowl revenue part of the revenue share piece already?? Also, the CBB LV tourney totally gutted the Maui tourney. Pretty sad really. Kids should get paid but gone way too far in their favor imo.

Bowl season for me is now NBA regular season. Just done with it all. Seems pointless and miserable.

problem is it's still hugely popular, growing and getting great ratings. So the people in power dont see it as being ruined like we do. for example, there should only be one ranking by committee at end of season (like CBB) but ESPN makes a ton showing the weekly rankings. so we have them. Only $ matter.

Yeah, the sport was better when everyone was just mean giving kids full rides to elite colleges while they buy time for the pros.

The portal has ruined both football and basketball. Off season capping was fun and it's absolutely pointless now.

The portal system has done far more to harm the sport than NIL or revenue sharing, though those have been their own problem with no real governance until lately. The sooner the players have to sign contracts, the better it will be

I can agree with this. I'm not opposed to kids making money. But who would watch any professional sport if every off season everyone just changed teams? That's how college feels now.
 
If you have a 1 year Nil deal...it should be distributed similar to how paychecks are. So much for every game played with the bulk distributed after your bowl game.

This, at achools outside the cfp, would allow schools and fans to count on all the playera being there until the final regular season game is over. And also, if the players are demanding that a bowl be played so they can get the rest of theie bag...then that helps potentially save the lower tier bowls from having to choose losing record schools to fill slots.

It should have been dealt with way sooner in a much better manner. Revenue sharing paid out to the players in accounts after their eligibility is up. Just like 401k matching from your employer, it vests at a higher percentage for each year you're at the school. Would have been so fucking easy.
