i don't follow NHL much, but do follow the hometown Bruins and was surprised at how great they were at coming back from big deficits to tie games up (and then eventually lose). I assume there must be live betting and stuff between periods, but BOS doesn't seem to be the team that needs to win games 2-1 this year so maybe there is hope for them to make a run as it's been a while since they've been doing anything late in the season...

Also odd to see them -180 to an OTT team that has owned them this year, but I've read that people in the know are not so high on OTT and oddly enough saw them in person getting smoked by NJ last winter when they gave up five in the first period. It's awesome news that Rask will play every meaningful minute because the backups seemingly lost every game they played this year, but if he gets hurt then BOS should start thinking about the golf course

No value in Wash-Tor. Too many holes and too little experience for the Leafs this year.

Nashville is going to be a pest for Chicago. Better special teams, better possession numbers, better defensive scoring, more overall scoring depth (12 players with 10 or more goals vs 7 for Chicago). Chicago has the experience, the better top end guys and the mystique. I'm taking Nashville to win game 1 and then probably hitting a series bet before game 2.

Hard to love the Flames and their awful history at Anaheim. Ducks actually fairly cheap, I have to think they take this series better than 2 out of 3 times, especially with the momentum they had down the stretch. Could see a play on them at -170.

Rangers-Habs pretty evenly matched, slight edge to Habs but not worth a play.

Pens get Malkin back, should give them enough of a boost to get past the Jackets, whose play has been so-so since January. If you think it comes down to Wash-Pens winner to get out of the East then Pens +420 is a pretty square price.

Lean to Wild in their series with the Blues, better depth, better blueline, better possession. Would play them in series if they lose game 1.

Love Edmonton and McGreatOne to stay red hot and swarm over the Sharks. -140 series line is a bargain IMO. That +750 for WC also worth a look if you like Nashville to spring the upset over the Blackhawks.

Ottawa getting no love despite being 4-0 vs Bruins this year? Line smells, staying away for now. Boston does have huge edge in special teams and possession, so I can see them being favored, but 2nd biggest fave and without home ice is a bit much.

Bruins back up goalie Khudobin had won 6 in a row prior to losing to Washington in a game the Bruins looked overmatched.

I'm stunned by that OTT/BOS series line. Krug is out, Carlo is out & Acciari is out for at least game one. Gandolf the B's are actually 0-6 this season against them, slightly worse than your stat.

I can't touch it as a B's fan but I will likely be on some under action throughout this series.

Boston is a top 4 team in the league, I think that price is fair, but the injuries hurt a lot to where Ottawa has some value. Ill be taking them game 1 and/or 2, I dont see them going down 0-2

Krug especially, McAvoy probably plays game 1, great prospect and playoffs are full of young guys with no experience stepping up

they have basically been the opposite of Washington in terms of luck, they crushed possession all year but just recently started getting goals from it

I said it in a thread after Julien got fired they would go on a run, it has nothing to do with the new coach, that team was just due

Ottawa needs Karlsson to take over, that's their chance IMO, he's the best player on that side of the bracket so it is possible

but I think Boston takes over in to the series as they get healthy and take it in 6 most likely

Washington is a very good squad, but having said that they have been incredibly lucky this year with the percentages, they are probably the best team in the league, but they have also been really lucky, they also have the mentality of a choker.

If for example the Pens, or the Hawks, or SJ etc. go down 2-0 I dont think they sweat it. if Washington goes down their is some implosion potential

they got lucky the Leafs blew their spot sunday, because I think Boston beats them, but Toronto doesnt have the depth. They can match them 6 forwards and 2 d deep, but after that the Caps have too much depth. I think the leafs 3rd/4th lines are hemmed in their own zone constantly.

Lumbus has been a PP driven squad all year, it was pointed out they faded since January and it had to do completely with the PP. They went from 9.5 goals per 60 minutes of PP time, to scoring 2.3 goals per 60 minutes post January 22nd. I think the Pens are too deep, the LeTang injury hurts but they picked up extra D at the deadline. they are too good

Montreal is too deep for NY IMO, plus with Henrik taking a step back and Price being head and shoulders above everyone else I think they win this one in 5. The Rangers are a counter team, they score the most goals in the league off the rush, and againt a slower squad I think they have a chance, but Montreal skates so well too.

Nashville has dissapointed me all season, I think they are finally built well. Their D is legit. They have 2 of the top 10 guys in the league back there, they finally have some offensive weapons in Forsberg and Ryjo (arvidsson is good too)

But they just haven't put it together. Chicago is not as good as they used to be, to me they are too top heavy to win the cup. they should win but Nashville has value

Calgary has a ton of value, they have been so hot the last few months. Elliot has been great. the 3M line has been the best line in hockey, if Gaudreau and Monahan can produce I think they win the series.

I see everyone so hot on Edmonton in other places and I dont see it, McDavid is the best player in the world at this point, so he's a matchup issue. But SJ is a faster version of last years squad, their defense could be an issue, if Burns or Vlasic arent out against McDavid he will crush them. But I think SJ has too much experience and depth.

I expect Minnesota to roll st.louis in 4 or 5, not much to really add, big matchup problems all up and down the lineup

I took Mon, Ana, Ott and StL

Can't wait to get started tonight. Pens are in for a tough series , but think they will prevail. Just not willing to bet on it.

I love Minnesota to beat Blues, my favorite series/price to take.

Teeds right about Calgary, they've been quietly so good I feel, I think I was high on them this year, and was getting crushed earlier in the season, but they really turned it on.

I wish San Jose/Edmonton were split up... I like both of those teams, and going to sit back and watch that one

surprised to read nobody likes NYR. I may have been looking at the wrong things, but I feel like i've watched them play BOS a bunch and the Bruins never really had a chance to beat them as NYR is just so much better. Maybe it's a matchups thing, which I won't pretend to know what that means in the NHL, but Henrik is forever going to be a goalie i want to back until he retires. Agree that Price is great as well, so maybe some unders are worth a look in that series. I remember playing one a few years ago between those two teams in the playoffs and i had to dodge an empty-netter for about 4 minutes and pretty much decided life is too short for unders

Bruins back up goalie Khudobin had won 6 in a row prior to losing to Washington in a game the Bruins looked overmatched.

thought he had done better, but very surprised to read this. Could argue he was due because they seemed to lose every time Rask didn't start and especially when he was hurt early in the year

Henrik has taken a big step back this year, Rangers were outscoring his problems

from the athletic preview on the series, which is behind a paywall so ill paste it

From 2011-16, the Rangers led the NHL in 5v5 save percentage. This year, they finished 18th, with, uh, Henrik Lundqvist actually being the issue for the Rangers. Lundqvist has never posted a worse 5v5 SV% in the period for which data is available than this year’s .918. New York’s plan is, presumably, to start him in every game of the playoffs.New York wasn’t a particularly great 5-on-5 team this year despite finishing third in the NHL in shooting percentage at 8.9 per cent, which carried them over their goaltending problems to a 101.2 PDO. They’re a lousy possession team – no playoff team was worse than their 47.9 per cent Corsi% and the percentages will only carry you so high when that happens – the Rangers’ 52.2 per cent GF% was 12th in the NHL.

As you can see from the graphs of the Rangers’ possession of their 12 most common forwards and six most common defencemen, New York is basically a black hole for shot attempts purposes. Basically every combination of forward/defenceman on their roster does worse possession-wise than the same combination (i.e. second most used forward/third most used defenceman or whatever) around the league. Their third pair seems decent but beyond that, bloodbath.....

Montreal is almost certainly going to out-shoot the Rangers handily at 5-on-5. Watching the goals that the Rangers score off the rush, there are a lot of bad pinches by defencemen who don’t have a forward in position to cover for them if it goes wrong. It goes wrong, odd-man rush, Rangers score. If Montreal takes that away from New York, it’s going to be a real uphill grind for the Rangers at 5-on-5.

the graph it talks about is this, it shows how the Rangers fare, red bad/green good

athletic15.plot1_.png

the Rangers win if Henrik really outplays Price or they get a ton of rush chances

I dont see the latter happening, Julien is a good coach and will know to take that away

the former, against another team maybe Henrik can go in the wayback machine to a few years ago and outplay the other goalie, but Price has been the best goalie in the world since he got the starting job for Canada at the olympics

Montreal isn't going to lose to a team that doesn't badly outchance them (which Boston, Pitt, Washington etc. will do IMO) but I dont see the Rangers doing much

Rangers against most squads will have a coaching advantage too with AV, but Julien negates that as well

just a bad matchup

against Toronto or Ottawa where they would get a ton of chances on the rush and counter I could definitely see them winning

First round...Ottawa at what I'm seeing at +180 for the series has some solid value...they've swept them this year and Anderson has only let 6 get by him in the 4 games they played this year. Think I'm going to bite on that one for sure at that price.

After 2 games in each series

Leafs are playing the caps even. That's a justfied split. I don't know if it's just caps choking again, Trotz is getting outcoached. He's moving Ovechkin off the Kadri matchup which I know AO and other star players hate.

I think this goes 6 or 7 but if the leafs win game 3, game 4 will tell you everything you need to know about the caps. Both goalies been nails. Matthews is due for a game soon

Boston and Montreal are outplaying Ottawa and the Rangers but not by a huge margin. I would expect both to win but if Henrik keeps playing well I think the Rangers have a better chance to upset

Montreal top forwards came alive at end of game 2 if they can bring that to game 3 it will help a lot.

Game today in Ottawa had a bunch of dumb mistakes and weird goals. I'd expect both to tighten up, under in game 3 I like

Pittsburgh is probably up too much already, expecting that much skill to lose 4 of 5 is a lot. Having said that Columbus has played them even this series, the difference is just in high end skill.

Jackets are a borderline great team, phenomenal d led by werenski and Seth Jones, but remind me of Nashville of a few years ago. At this level you can outplay someone but without top level finishers you have a ceiling. I'll be playing them at home though, don't think this is a sweep

San Jose and Edmonton has been great. I think sj is hurting a lot more than anyone thought. Couture basically said at intermission he's gutting through it. If Thornton can come back that will help, but I think they might just be too tired and hurt. They had no answer for Kassian running around like a wrecking ball.

First 10 minutes tomorrow will be a big test. Gun to my head i still lean SJ but it's gonna be close

I think Anaheim too physical and savvy for Calgary, they got some lucky bounces tonight but the flames are taking a bunch of undisciplined penalties. Don't think this is over yet but Calgary needs to sweep at home imo. Game 3 they are live I expect that building to be rocking.

Minnesota has absolutely dominated St Louis but Allen has been unreal, I expect them to get back in this as they are a much better team that just hasn't been finishing. They have outshot them 78 to 46 and doubled them in scoring chances. If he blues do hold on and get 2 more wins here it's a huge boost for the winner of the other central series....

Which is looking very likely to be Nashville, they look to finally be playing at their potential. Today was them dominating in every zone

Having pk and Josi on the ice for 50 minutes of every game is such a huge advantage and its showing off. If they can continue this they are a darkhorse cup winner. They really would wanting to be the blues but even against the wild they like their chances, they are big, fast, physical, and skilled. Their weakness is Rinne, suros is better and should be playing, which is why it's not over yet because Chicago has a ton of finishers and could put up goals in bunches

The preds have really been focusing on being physical with Kane and Keith, that has to continue, those two drive the bus for chicago

The Hawks have been down 2-0 a few times and gone late in to and win series. Nashville has to keep their game plan the same, play urgent, if they give Chicago even a big period it can swing the momentum, like I said earlier Chicago is top heavy and so far that's been neutralized but doing it twice Moreno's easier said than done. I think they try and open it up in game 3 and especially if a 5 around even is there I'll be on the over

I seriously agree with everything teed, spot on!

The Flames taking penalties is who they are this year, led the league, anaheim is just right behind them.

Capitals powerplay has been ferocious(which is what we expect) but faceoff wins in Game 2 played a big part to toronto holding on to win that game. Did miss half of it though.

I think the bluejackets are done. Obviously today is important to start off strong, I dont see it.

Pens to win the East is down to +200, now the favorites.

Oilers to win the West is down to +450, better than the Hawks.

If you still believe in Towes, Kane and Co. now is the time to buy, +1400 to win the Cup, +650 to win the West.

Why are Caps -145 in G4 and only -110 adjusted series price? Question 2 does Trotts need a lobotomy?

I presume it's because the odds of Washington going down 3-1 seem highly unlikely but the series is now a pick em in the eyes of the oddsmakers? Makes sense, I suppose, considering all 3 games have gone to OT.

On a side note, I'm trying to think of another team in any other sport that consistently underachieves like the Caps. Most teams that blaze through the regular season at least get to the finals every once in a while. Off the top of my head, I'm not even sure they've ever even made it to the ECF during the Ovechkin era.

Didnt they make it to the ECF last year vs. the Pens?

They have not.

I believe that was the 2nd round. It was TB/Pitt from what I remember in the ECF.

Yup, completely blanked on that one. But now that you bring it up I remember just how beat up Bishop was in that series. They're a very odd team, Washington. Seems very mental...they've got star power and offensive efficiency plus a goalie who has the ability to stand on his head...think playing a team of kids who don't know how to do anything other than play their asses off and not worry about anything else is a big factor (and makes this a tough matchup) for the Caps.

Ovechkin and Holtby are about the only two who perform in elimination games for them

They are crushing tonight, but if they lose in round 1 or 2 this year I wonder if they move someone like Backstrom or Kuznetsov to shake up the chemistry, maybe get a bit younger

I'd never trade Backstrom but the return would be massive

I don't follow much anymore, but don't they have a tonne of UFA's and RFA's this summer like Oshie, Shattenkirk and 2 or 3 more D-Men (Alzner, I think)?

Ya they showed a quote from the gm before last year's playoffs during today's game where he said it's a 2 year window for us then we will look at changes

Those are the main 3, so change his coming

Shattenkirk is for sure gone, most think new york, I think the leafs make him a huge offer

Adjusted series price after G4 from BM

i'd say Gonzaga until this year when they drew 16-8-4-11-7, but college and the league they play in probably kill that comparison

...been a great playoffs so far, but i think BOS is done

I thought they were done before the series started. I couldn't believe that series price.

Almost have to take a shot with Tor. Having a lot of fun watching and cheering for them anyways.

I'm confused, why are we already confirmed playing the Rangers in the 2nd round? Assuming Washington wins out, the bottom two seeds (even if you reseed by points) play one another, and the marquee matchup goes in the 2nd round?

Whoever came up with this new playoff seeding needs to be fired...

NHL gave up on reseeding a few years ago, trying to promote division rivalries.
Don't get me wrong, this actually benefits us greatly as I just assumed we'd get killed by the Penguins. Still, makes no sense that in both conferences, the two higher seeds are going to end up meeting each other in the 2nd round. Kind of renders regular season positioning a bit pointless...

Guess it shows I haven't been following much as of late...

I like it

It worked out weird this year with the Atlantic being stacked

But I want more teams that have a great rivalry

Those real ones don't come until you play a team a few times in the playoffs

I don't think the NHL has had a great one since Canucks/Hawks from 2008-2013

Seems kinda fucked up to me. The only sport where 1 & 2 meet in the second round. Not sure how Washington/Pittsburgh is any more of a "rivalry" than Wash/NYR would be, all three teams are in the Metro.

I do like the NYR/Ott matchup in terms of some unders though. I envision a few 2-1 games here.

Round 2 thoughts:

Heavyweight matchup renewed in Pens (+125) vs Caps (-145). Caps have a significant edge in PP/PK numbers, Shooting %/Save % numbers, Shot differential, and goal scoring depth. Pens are competitive in blue line offense even without Letang and obviously top end talent. Naturally Pens have the psychological edge knowing they've beaten the Caps before. Caps struggled a bit against the Leafs but in Game 6 I thought their breakouts were excellent and they controlled a lot of the play. Think they can do the same here. Line has been moving steadily in Caps favor. This is Caps do or die and they've got an edge to press with Murray and Letang both out. If they can't win this........Caps and some Tums.

Rangers (-150) riding a lot of Metro division respect to be solid favorite over Ottawa (+130). I give Rags the edge in special teams and overall talent level. Neither team is great at puck possession. Karlsson might be the best skater in the series but he's at less than 100%. Rangers should win this, but I'd wait to see if Sens grab Game 1 to get some value.

Nashville (-125) as predicted gave the Hawks more than they could handle, while the Blues (-105) were a little surprising in how swiftly they dispatched the Wild, but they were at least hotter going into that series. Blues have a solid edge in special team production, but the Preds are quite deep, their blue line is exquisite and they own a nice shot differential edge. I think they're a pretty decent bargain at the current price.

Oilers (+105) and Ducks (-125) are very similar stats-wise, Oilers a little better with shot differential, but most other numbers net out pretty close. Ducks biggest assets are home ice and their experience. Oil have the McGreat One. 2nd round was the stopping point in Lemieux's first playoff season. Gretzky and Messier didn't get this far, neither did Crosby or Ovechkin. That's some serious history working against #97. Corey Perry was a killer when these two met during the season. Will nibble a little on Oilers Game 1 and see how it looks from there.
