im gonna keep going with SD
possible bet on run scored in 1st inning or SD 1st run scored for the hell of it, and I think their might be some good value. Moyers #s at home are much worse than they are on the road, also his lifetime #'s in his 1st 15 pitches, ERA 6.16. Even if thats the case and they dont get on the board early, Pads rested a couple guys Sunday Eckstein and some of the pen, theyre also 5-1 vs LHP on the year (1-1 on the road).

washington blows another one today, and now they have to face lowe who has pitched well against them. It's zimmerman's first start, and he's supposed to be real tough. He tore through the minors, so he might put out a good showing tomorrow. Washington has won their last 6 at home against Atlanta. MIght play under 1h in that one, as i'm scared of the bull pens blowing up. Only concern is zimmerman getting roughed up.

depends on if you think the Bravos broke out of their slump after Sundays game. Like the idea though because of the pens... hope zimmermann is the real deal because i have him stashed away on my CTG fantasy team

Ya, they could have broke out of their slump, but I wouldn't make too much out of it as Duke was pitching today. I'm taking his hot start as a fluke, and he's been awful pitching in day games.... an ERA around 6.00

Not playing it, still looking... just some thoughts...

might as well say it

marlins -110
- miller (LHP) vs pirates, pirates were 14-28 vs LHP last year (10-11 @ home), miller making his 2nd start of the year so should settle down a bit.
- ohlendorf i know very little about so wont even bother, hes pitching vs the fish and thats enough for me

FYI - I think a lot of these will be cancelled tomorrow, bad weather on the East Coast.
Good spot for a day off for me.

Was looking for a slightly cheaper price on the Stros.

Everywhere Ohlendorf has pitched, he has given up a lot of hits.

Would like to see a better number to even consider backing the Nats, although I think the only possible way to do it would be in the first 5 innings. There is no way my money touches that bullpen. Chipper was back but McCann and Escobar were still out of Sundays lineup. Lowe has very good numbers against Nats.

Balt is down 0-3 in the series and they really havent played that poorly . A clutch play in each game would make those 2 run and 1 run losses. Surely thats the difference ibn results for many teams and which makes teams poor or good (look at Wash perfect example) . Masterson was solid last season but hard to see why I would lay -200/-220 for Boston here . LH's have fared okay to date vs Boston but of the course the Green Monster can make it a liong day for any LH. Hendrickson has terrible career numbers vs Boston but they are not that recent from what I can gather but if you break it down its actually good. Lineup is just 16/74 with 4doubles and 1 HR vs him..drew , pedroia and Ellsbury have never seen him..Youk is 3/11 with a HR , Baldelli , Ortiz , Varitek , Bay , Lowell have...so leaning Balt ML or something like that (1st 5 ML or _+1.5 RL)

Its hard to back Yanks in series opener but Pettitte has been very solid so far nd 3 of his 4 starts vs Oak since returning have been excellent . LH when in a groove have given Oak headaches ...Bedard , Tallet , Romero today ....Yanks weaker vs LHP so an under looks good on paper and its the 1st night game which should help out. Think we saw less carry on the ball today as it was cooler and looked that way late in the Sat game to me . Problem is both guys are not good WHIP pitchers and its going to be about pitching out of jams most likely ....

SD is clearly playing well at the moment . They are getting key hits with MOB in close games and the pen has been exceelent for the most part. Today they had no choice but to rest Gregorson (steal of the year so far) , Suanchez , Bell because they have been out there nearly every day . Moyer struggles more at home for obvious reasons ....ball carries to LF and a small park in general with a guy throwing 84 MPHs is not a good fit ...however having Barry behind the dish may be helpful , much more so to him then Correia who doesnt exactly pound the strike zone( well Moyer doesnt pound anything but you get the jist)...more inclined to take Philly rather then SD but hard to justify ........

Really dont see Fla playing well at all this past weekend . Probably would have been swept rather sweep Wash had the Nats pen done their job . Still dont like the fact that the Marlins are not favored . Ohlendorf has thrown well and has a slow start vs Houston when they were trying to sweep. Never a good spot to pitch for a medicore starter ask Zach Duke ......Pitts vs LH will be about Craig Monroe . He had a good spring to make the team after a terrible 2008 . He wanted to prove he wasnt done and has always hit LH pretty well back in his DET days. He had 2 Hrs and was the offense on Saturday .....interested in Pitt especially if the price get sbetter........both teams have gone 4-0 in Series opener .......I actually trust Ohlendorf at this point ....

probably look at under in Wash . Lowe was so-so when he started vs Wash before the reain ended his night and then struggled next time out. However he has been good vs them in the past . Zimmerman is an unknown and Garrett and Chipper are back but Escobar's absence can hurt vs LH and MCann has the vision issues...the whole thing is how does Wash bounce back after these losses ? So far they have but with each one its get tougher the next day ....

have to look at Hampton here and would lean under if it wasnt 8 ...just 2 low with these bullpens. Reds struggling vs quality LHs especially on the road for awhile now and when Arroyo has been healthy seems to be okay vs Houston . Which is probably thanks to the fact Houston just has so many RHbs....

Marquis has looked good so far and DMoney called Garland looking shitty which he then got smoked by STL....he has been very solid in the past @ Arizona and with the DBacks getting 1 hit today scoring just 2 runs in the top of the 9th ion Sat the entire series cant really have much faith in them .

I'm willing to be a sucker and back Florida cheap against Ohlendork, even if Miller has been awful.

Also, getting NYY -1.5 at even money is a bargain. Eveland will get bombed by good hitting, just look at what the Red Sox did against him. He'll be putting guys on base and if one long fly ball blows over the fence, look out...

Only problem with Yanks -1.5 is the offense . Yanks have not done much vs LHP at all . Nady to the DL is killer as Swisher had that great stretch but cooled (think 2-14 CLE series). We didnt hit the 1st game vs CLE , we had like 8 hits the 2nd game but 5 were HRs , yesterday didnt hit a lick and Tex got a Yankee Stadium Hr , today we didnt hit Pavano then got a Posada HR that made it out by 6 inches and a lost fly ball in the sun to clear the bases.....just hard to expect offense vs LHs but the UNDER at home vs LHP has been very good . If not for the open meltdown when it was CC vs Lee it would have stayed under.....:shake:

vs LH ramirez @ KC, Lee and Kaz @ TB we didnt hit much . Last 4 wins 2 were by 1 run and the others were 1 run games which Yanks widened in their last at bat ...TB 9th at TB when Jeter hit the 3run Hr with 2outs and today a bases clearing out...er double that scored 3.....

Well I will just say that I will be POUNDING the under in Washington...I pray that somehow they play...I watched Jordan live throughout college, know him well, so you could say I have the 'scoop' on him...The most important thing for Zimmy tomorrow will be the first inning. But in summary the U5 in the first 5 could be one of my biggest plays of the year (weather will help if they play)

Looking to fade Marquis on the road with a good price for the Dbacks

A's and Yanks don't bring up enough offense to warrant a 10 o/u, no matter how much that wind is helping in Yankee stadium

Boston will bounce Hendrickson by the 3rd

The Red Sox are 65-48 all-time on
Patriots Day, including 26 doubleheaders
between 1903 and 1966…Boston has won 5
straight and 7 of the last 8 Patriots Day
contests beginning in 2001.
The Sox have been scheduled to play at
home on Patriots Day every year since
1959…Boston is 3-1 all-time against the
Orioles on the holiday, winning the last such

meeting, 4-2, on April 21, 1997.

like SD again, no surprise. Today was the first day I haven't backed them in a week.

Thats why they choked and the fact there whole pen was unavailable ....I needed them to finish two parlays so I was damn happy ......hard for me to figure this game but at the moment think Correria will put to many MOB and being a 5-6 inn SP the pen will again be called upon albeit rested some now but pitching over its head imo ..

GL if you back SD but give us the heads u to stay away..

Very good chance I lay 2.5 with Boston as well as Boston first half. Will talk about this tomorrow morning.

Cinci was batting .208 as a team coming into Sunday's action and they didn't exactly right the ship going 7 for 31 as a team today. They have been able to keep themselves in games w/ their pitching and D. Their average gets worse against Lefties 19-113 for a robust .168 avg. Jay Bruce won't be back till Tuesday in Chi-town so expect to see Darnell McDonald in the lineup. Dusty may rest Votto or a couple of the regulars as they have had 1 day off in the last 8 days and don't have another off day scheduled till April 30th. They win 2 of the first 3 and have another important series starting Tuesday w/ the Cubs. I watched Arroyo's last start against Milwaukee who isn't hitting at all but he was dominant and able to keep them off balance all night long. Think some of the pitchers are still getting accustomed to Ramon Hernandez calling pitches but he is a veteran guy and it shouldn't take too much longer for them to get on the same page. Arroyo really dominates right handers but he will give up a long ball or two and looking to potentially get involved somehow in this game. Like what Hampton has done thus far and w/ Hamptons success last time out and the Reds not hitting really thinking about taking Houston parlayed to Under 8

I see no reason to jump ship on the Marlins esp at a near pk em as they just continue to get production outside of the heart of their order and even w/ the top of their lineup not producing over the last few they just find ways to win games.
Fla -110

Agree with Zimmerman and the 1st 5 under . Only natural to have the jitters in your debut .

Agree also on the Yanks total and the one thing about the new stadium is every games has been unseasonable warm and a day game . Actually the Cub series the wind was blowing out the 1st game. Cooler air which we will have should definetly slow down the HRs if the pitchers keep the ball down like Pavano and Carmona did the past 2 days ...Yanks are incredibly strong under team with a LHSP opposing them . Whenever Lee faced them I broke it down it down in that thread...

As much as I agree Hendrickson is a worse pitcher then basketball player , player by player he hasnt been to bad vs Boston , despite some past issues back in his early days ...

Just hard to lay -220 when the RSox arent playing all that well also had them in some fashion in every game so far . Maybe I just feel like I have had enough good fortune with them....

While Marquis is a local product and someone who makes it hard for you to cheer for him he has pitched well in 2 starts so far . Zona is going to be bad this year as the pen is not the same and the SP is not anywhere near duplicating what it did last season outside of Davis. Haren has been solid but not lights out and Webbs injury is crucial to this team( any team obviously)....

Anyway marquis has pitched well @ Zona in the past probably due to their RH lineup . past 10 starts vs them he has 8 very solid outings and the two poor ones think the big inning got him both times. Odd schedule going back to Zona for a 2nd series bewteen the two. In 12 games Zona has scored 2 runs or less 8 times but granted 5 of those were started by LHSP which they are hitting about .130 off after todays 1 hit performance....

Garland with 5 bbs to zero K's speaks either about how terrible his stuff was last outing or he was getting squeezed . Dont recall him being squeezed though....

just food for thought ..

While I like Fla as a team in general , guess I just them as very fortunate in every way, dont think they found ways to win as they just played a team with a terrible bullpen who couldnt close 3 straight wins out . Which they happened to own 3 wins vs them to start the season . Have another two 1-run wins vs the Mets who are not playing well and one was thanks to a dropped flyball . Then vs ATL they didnt see Chipper and Garrett much if at all while McCann had his vision issues. Still they again needed to see some good fortune to escape. There is no penalty for winning but considering how they won and who they played alot of it just circumstance .

Not advocating backing Pitt but once the momentum stops for FLA they are going to struggle for abit IMO . :shake:

Mr. Baseball - where are you from in Wisconsin if you watched Zimmerman in college?I watched him also and I am from where he went to college. Granted, he was dominate in college, but that was D-3. I know he blew throught the minors but was that because the Nats minor leagues stink, or was he that good? Proabably a little of both. He did great in spring training also. Don't get me wrong, I hope he does great, but this ain't no UW Stout anymore. Gluck potlicker

He did blow through D3, but at the same time the WIAC is annually one of if not the best D3 conference in the nation...plus he was dominant in the World Series..

I agree that he made it up so early because of the weak system, but that's how it goes!

He has been dominant and been working on pitches to support his fastball and slider. THe thing I love about him is his great makeup/composure. He also had a dominant spring training.

Tell you what though if the game does go over, the Braves will almost certainly be in the winning end of that, as I might put some on the RL

there seems to be a good handful of teams that cant hit right now, arizona, sf, cinc, colorado, a's, seattle...

Pee Lover as my daddy would say. Agree with everything you say, I certainly hope he does well, as he seems to be a good kid. Unfortunately, he plays for the worst team in baseball. Someday a Brewer?????

He would like to be a Brewer, but from talking to him last fall he is just happy to be there.

Although he is working hard now, let's just say his work ethic after his signing bonus was less than stellar though...

Heard that about him working out - too much time down on the Square!!! Had a few extra bucks to spend. Must be good if he can still move up that fast. Take care.

6 teams in the NL below 254 coming into today and 8 at 254 or below ...

nothing is comparable to the DBacks vs LHSP ...... 19 /132 14bb 31Ks after today ....

The Bullpen Gets Blown Up

After today's loss, Manny Acta came into the manager's interview room. He was seething. He sat down and said, "I think it's embarrassing. I think it's unacceptable. I think our fans have every right to be mad, like we are right now. And it's not going to be tolerated. We're going to have a brand new bullpen tomorrow, and if those guys that come in don't get it done, we're going to continue getting guys out of here. Because I think all of us deserve better... The fact is, you have to throw strikes. This is the big leagues, and they're big league pitchers, and you win with pitching. We had a chance to win three games in a row, we couldn't do it, and it's not going to be tolerated. So starting tomorrow we're going to have a brand new bullpen. Plenty of moves, and more to come."

The moves came a few minutes later.

Once Acta returned to his office, he and Acting GM Mike Rizzo called the players in one-by-one. First Steven Shell. Then Wil Ledezma. Then Saul Rivera.

Yup, overnight, three-sevenths of the bullpen is sent down. Counting the long-anticipated roster move -- C Josh Bard, gone; P Jordan Zimmermann, up -- this team is turning over almost a fifth of its roster.

Here are the moves:

GOING DOWN:
* RHP Saul Rivera, optioned to Class AAA Syracuse
* LHP Wil Ledezma, designated for assignment
* RHP Steven Shell, designated for assignment
* C Josh Bard, optioned to Class AAA Syracuse

COMING UP:
* RHP Garrett Mock
* RHP Jason Bergmann
* RHP Kip Wells
* RHP Jordan Zimmermann
(Zimmermann and Wells will both be added to the 40-man roster, which loses Shell and Ledezma.)

Acting GM Mike Rizzo elaborates...

Q: You have said Garrett Mock was being groomed as a closer. Will he be the new closer here?

I think that's to be determined. He's going to come in and be a member of the bullpen. I'm not sure where the bullpen will kind of all map out right now. It's a brand new bullpen, really. We've got some unanswered questions.

Q: This is almost a fifth of your roster turning over. How tough is it to be put into this situation?

Well, it's unacceptable to perform the way the bullpen has performed. It shows the incredible strain that it has put on the whole ballclub, and like I said since spring training, here it's all about doing the job and executing pitches and making it work. And it was clear that the people we had in there just weren't doing the job.

Q: Was today the final straw?

Yeah, the incompetence of the bullpen was drawn to a head today and it got to the point where it just wasn't fair for the fans, it wasn't fair for the rest of the teammates and the starting pitchers to go status quo. We're going to change things up. Mock and Bergmann had good spring trainings. They had options, so they got sent down. That was the rationale at the time. We're going with the guys that we feel give us the best chance to win games.

Q: And Wells?

Wells has been outstanding, probably as good a stuff and as good a performance as anybody. He's been a starter down there. He's had two starts, has a two-plus ERA down there. He's got power stuff, and we need power arms that throw strikes... He's got some experience, and he's earned the promotion to pitch in the big leagues.

Q: You've obviously seen Saul in better times. What on earth has happened with him?

Well he's a guy who pounded the strike zone, and we're going to send him back to Syracuse. We just had a talk with him, and that's one of the things he has to go back and get back into, is being the Saul that can hit his spots. You know, when you walk the fastest guy in baseball to lead off the ninth inning it just shows that you don't have the command of your stuff.

Q: Not to sound pessimistic, but if these moves don't work out, where do you go from here?

Well, we're going to run what we feel is the best 25 guys on the club, and we're going to just keep finding ways to acquire players and acquire talent until we find somebody who performs for us. I'm optimistic about this group. Like I said, Mock and Bergmann, as far as what their spring trainings were, deserved to be on the big league club... We gave the guys a chance to perform, and they didn't perform.

and that's why they're -220. no value unless you play a parlay

oh, now they're going to actually have on the team who they thought were their best pitchers? Way to wait until you're 10 under to do it, you dumb fucks. GM should be fired for being a dumbfuck. Say you're deciding on the last roster spot. OK, that's a time when you might want to look at who has options left. Say you're deciding on half the bullpen. Maybe you want the guys who are the best pitchers then, you stupid, stupid fucks.

Sorry for the rant, but I see day in and day out people who are paid hundreds of thousands of dollars to make basic decisions and they can't fucking do it. They're only job is to know about baseball and they somehow find a way to fuck it up.

You do know that the Nationals GM (Jim Bowden) resigned a week before the regular season started for skimming contract money from Latin American players on the Nationals?

"'My resignation is based upon my realization that my ability to properly represent the Washington Nationals has been compromised because of false allegations contained in the press. I am disappointed by the media reports regarding investigations into any of my professional activities. There have been no charges made, and there has been no indication that parties have found any wrongdoing on my part...'"

that might have something to do with this idiotic team. Having incompeten owner's doesn't help. They seem to be following the Detroit Lions model.

lean to Oakland but want to see who is behind the plate. If Pettitte is going to get all kinds of bullshit calls like he did in KC, i have no interest in going against him.

yep, it's disgusting. If you're an MLB team, then fucking act like it. There are so many talented people out there that know a shitload about baseball and they hire this dumb fuck to run the Nats into the ground before the season is 2 weeks old.

I don't think +140 is good enough on SD. Going to wait and hope this one moves up in the +145/150 range before I bite.

Don't like much else other than possibly Oakland.

I need some help here. In the past I could go to First Inning and see the last 10 starts of a pitcher in the majors or the minors. This year all they show for Masterson are 6 innings of work with Boston this season. This game is certainly going to be at least a large bet for me and possibly much more than that but more information would be very helpful in deciding how much I am betting here.

Masterson has only pitched out of the pen this year...

Its actually something of a fantasy where true odds mean nothing and 200 means DANGER SCARY AVOID AVOID. If something is priced at minus 200 and true odds are minus 400 or more than laying the 200 is a excellent play. If you have no confidence in your ability to evaluate those situations well--.

masterson looked very good in his long relief outing against Oakland. Dice K went one inning and Masterson went 4 very good innings. Had all of his pitches working.

I need some help here. In the past I could go to First Inning and see the last 10 starts of a pitcher in the majors or the minors. This year all they show for Masterson are 6 innings of work with Boston this season. This game is certainly going to be at least a large bet for me and possibly much more than that but more information would be very helpful in deciding how much I am betting here.

yahoo has game logs for every player for this year and past years.

Thanks, have seen those innings at First Inning and have baseball-reference and First Inning in favorites. Have seen his 2.30 spring era. Thing is I am very comfortable rocking along on 1 unit bets. This is likely to be a much larger bet based on true odds. Its true many of the players that walked on Hendrickson are gone but at this point we are really talking about conditioned responses. For the last 2 years Baltimore has been the worst team in baseball in day games. This season Baltimore in last game of series
lose 2-11 to the Yankees
Lose 3-11 to Tampa Bay
Lose 6-19 at Texas
And now they have are going with an over the hill hack with a day era last year of 7.71 playing at a place and against a team he has been a rag doll to giving up 5 or more runs to 10 consecutive times on a date that is very meaningful to Boston when the next day Baltimore starts at home against the WS with a potential young star at home and I am supposed to believe that minus 200 is a fair price here!
Has anyone even looked at Demuth the homeplate umpires 8 consecutive wins with Boston usually by large numbers. Or the fact that Boston has the day off Tuesday after this special occasion so there is nothing stopping them from using their full bull pen in this game.
No I guess not minus 200 is very scary even though Boston is 15-5 last 20 against Baltimore and has won 6 straight and 10 of the last 11. I guess the thing to do is make a politicly correct dog play on Baltimore even though Boston does have a home batting average against lefthanders of .324 and are only 8-3 last 11 at home against lefties losing twice to Kazmir and once to Saunders of the Angels.
Obvious no value bet.

Only problem with looking at how Balt ended series is not talking about how they started them. Those 3 series you mentioned Balt was 6-0 in games 1 and 2 so while they lost , it was also the opponent avoiding the sweep, where as today they stand at 0-3 in this series....

Boston is definetly getting on track here and I felt that way before the series started . Boston is also more methodical then say the Yankees will bury teams when it can. Still just dont like how they are playing in general . Though I would agree with playing Boston -2.5 RL as an option . This wont be close either Balt wins SU Or Boston has a nice comfortable win ....
