Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports that Shelby Miller will return to the Diamondbacks’ starting rotation on Wednesday to start against the Giants at AT&T Field.
Miller had an abysmal first half of the season, which included a stint on the disabled list with a finger injury caused by his follow-through. In 14 starts with the D-Backs this season, Miller put up a 7.14 ERA with a 50/34 K/BB ratio in 69 1/3 innings.
Miller was demoted to Triple-A Reno and made his first start shortly after the All-Star break. In eight starts in the minors, Miller compiled a much-improved 3.91 ERA with a 55/10 K/BB ratio in 50 2/3 innings.
The Diamondbacks acquired Miller along with minor leaguer Gabe Speier from the Braves this past winter in a heavily-criticized trade that sent Ender Inciarte, Aaron Blair, and 2015 No. 1 overall pick Dansby Swanson to Atlanta.

Is there any stats out there on guys throwing 130+ the game before? Moore went all out in the last game and I know in the past others who've been in similar spots haven't fared well. Wanted to validate my instinct with some actual data though. My lean is Miller F5 because of that AZ pen.

I think a knuckler's first preference is to pitch in a dome with no wind at all, but if they had to choose playing outdoors they would rather throw into the wind then have it at their back. Theory being the breeze from behind makes the ball spin.

Yea, after digging deeper I'm not touching it. Nothing too compelling regarding players immediate performances after throwing 130+ pitches in the prior outing....many did become good fade material over the rest of the season. I'm likely just going to bet the over 11.5 in Colorado for game 2...None of those LA / COL starters (for either game) should go deep and 18 innings in that park is a task for those pitching staffs.

Esch will make an emergency spot start for the Marlins on Wednesday night against the Mets with David Phelps (oblique) hitting the disabled list. Thanks Tim, appreciate the input, always wonder about the knucklers, sat behind home plate a fenway once back in the day and watched wakefield throw, it was hard to believe anyone could actually hit the ball dancing around like it did that day

Rich Hill (blister) has been scratched from his scheduled start Wednesday night against the Rockies.
Bud Norris will take the mound instead as part of a bullpen game for Los Angeles. Hill threw 40 warmup tosses before Tuesday's game at Coors Field was postponed due to rain and Dodgers manager Dave Roberts was concerned about aggravating the blister that recently cost the veteran left-hander five weeks. Hill went six scoreless innings in his Dodgers debut last Wednesday versus the Giants. It was his first start since July 17. Aug 31 - 6:18 PM

Kind of like Atlanta in the early game before all the football festivities start at night. Folty is in his ideal home/day splits, home ERA of 3.69 and day ERA of 1.38. The Padres have some guys with decent numbers against him, but I think being in a comfortable environment/setting serves Folty well here. Cosart was once considered a pretty high prospect, and he still may end up a good pitcher, but it just hasn't happened yet. When he got traded from Houston to Miami I thought the Marlins got a steal, it didn't turn out that way. Cosart is in his worst away/day splits here and coming off perhaps an "emotional" game where he just pitched at Miami against the team that traded him away, and wound up losing 7-6 with a no decision despite pitching decent. The entire month of August I don't think he received a decision, think he may get one today.

Rickenbach MLB Game #953 - Free Pick - Miami Marlins Run Line +1.5 runs -125 @ New York Mets @ 7:10 ET Thursday - The Mets gave Jacob deGrom some extra rest after his last start hoping that will help him to "sort things out" before this start. I don't expect any dramatic turnaround for him though after getting rocked for 13 earned runs on 25 hits in less than 10 innings of work spanning his last two starts. DeGrom also has been hit hard by the Marlins in recent starts against them as he has given up 13 earned runs on 26 hits in less than 16 innings spanning his last 3 starts against Miami. The Marlins will have Jose Urena on the mound and he has allowed a total of just 3 earned runs in his last two starts. Also, in his lone start against the Mets he held them to 1 earned run on just 4 hits in 6 innings of work. The Mets are only 9-11 in deGrom's last 20 starts and 4 of those 9 wins came by just a single run. That means if you had played the Mets at -1.5 runs on the run line in each of deGrom's last 20 starts you'd have a 5-15 record. I'll gladly take 75% odds in my favor while only having to lay -125 odds to get the 1.5 runs here with the Marlins. Play MIAMI on the Run Line at +1.5 runs as my Free Pick for Thursday. Kind of like the expensive Cubs in the early game here. Lester at home where his splits are better than away. Suarez starting in place of Cain. His away ERA is 5.34 compared to his home ERA of 3.34. His overall ERA has continued to climb every month, with August being his worst month yet. He's faced the Cubs once earlier as a reliever for a few innings, so basically a bunch of the Cubs players have seen him for one AB and nobody got a hit off him. Did he use up his "first time seeing" advantage and maybe get exposed here a bit the 2nd time around?
