Brewers at Mets

The Mets will hope Pill can provide some steadiness out of the fifth spot in the rotation when the right-hander takes the mound in the second game of a four-game series against the Milwaukee Brewers at Citi Field. New York won the opener 4-2 on Monday.
Pill (0-1, 13.50 ERA) will oppose Brewers right-hander Zach Davies (5-3, 5.33 ERA).
It will be the second career appearance for Pill, who took the loss in his big league debut on Saturday. He entered in the 10th inning and allowed a run while recording two outs as the Mets fell 5-4 to the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Pill, who turned 27 on Monday, said getting his feet wet on Saturday night should diminish any nerves he will feel on Tuesday. The Brewers, who were limited to just five hits -- including two in the ninth inning -- by a trio of Mets pitchers on Monday, won't be an easy assignment for Pill. The quiet performance was an aberration for Milwaukee (27-24), the sixth-highest-scoring team in the majors.
Pill, who produced a 1.96 ERA in six starts for Triple-A Las Vegas in the Pacific Coast League (where the average ERA is 4.66), is looking forward to the challenge.
It won't take much for Pill to be compared favorably to the other pitchers the Mets (22-27) have employed in place of Noah Syndergaard since the ace right-hander sustained a torn right lat on April 30. Left-hander Tommy Milone and right-hander Rafael Montero have combined to allow a whopping 22 runs in just 18 2/3 innings in five starts this month.
Pill likely will make two starts for the Mets, who will again need a fifth starter on Sunday. New York has two off days in a span of four days next week, after which two injured starters -- right-hander Seth Lugo and left-hander Steven Matz -- are expected to be activated from the disabled list and re-instated to the rotation.
Davies had a seven-start unbeaten streak snapped in his most recent outing last Thursday, when he gave up three runs over six innings as the Brewers fell 4-0 to the Arizona Diamondbacks. He is 2-0 with a 4.41 ERA in three career starts against the Mets.
Davies beat the Mets on May 13 despite allowing four runs on seven hits over five innings of an 11-4 Milwaukee win.

Mariners at Rockies

Left handed Angel Miranda will start for the Mariners against left-hander Tyler Anderson (3-4, 5.40 ERA).Anderson has never faced Seattle. In his past four starts, Anderson is 2-1 with a 2.55 ERA, allowing 21 hits and seven walks in 24 2/3 innings with 32 strikeouts.
He was not involved in the decision in his last start at Philadelphia on Thursday, when he pitched a season-high seven innings and allowed one run on six hits. He walked two and struck out seven in a game the Rockies lost 2-1.In three interleague starts, all at Coors Field, Anderson is 1-1 with a 3.26 ERA.Miranda won his most recent start, Thursday at Washington, allowing three hits and two runs in five innings with three walks and four strikeouts in the Mariners' 4-2 victory. He will be facing the Rockies for the first time.He is 2-0 with a 5.57 ERA in four career interleague starts.
Miranda will be facing an improving Trevor Story. The Rockies shortstop went 1-for-4 and hit his eighth homer of the season Monday. Since being reinstated after missing 13 games due to a strained left shoulder, Story has gone 5-for-19 (.263) with two homers and five RBIs and five strikeouts. At the time of his injury, Story was hitting .180 (20-for-111) with 48 strikeouts.
The Mariners, whom the Rockies had not played since 2015, pose an interesting challenge for a young hitter such as Story. He faced three pitchers -- Gaviglio, left-hander James Pazos and closer Edwin Diaz -- for the first time Monday.

Tigers at Royals

Verlander will start the middle game of a three-game series Tuesday at Kauffman Stadium.
In four starts this season in Detroit, Verlander is 2-0 with a 1.61 ERA. He has held opponents to a .162 batting average with one home run, six extra-base hits with no stolen bases at Comerica Park.
On the road, Verlander is 2-3 with a 7.64 ERA in six starts. Opposing hitters are batting .299 off him in away games with eight home runs and eight doubles. They have also swiped six bases. He allowed six runs on nine hits and three walks in his most recent start, a no-decision at Houston on Thursday.
Verlander will be facing the Royals for the first time this year, but for the 42nd time of his career. He is 22-9 with a 3.23 ERA against Kansas City. He went 2-1 with a 3.43 ERA last season versus the Royals.
He is 13-5 with a 2.98 ERA in 22 career starts at Kansas City.
Royals catcher Salvador Perez does not mind facing Verlander. He is 23-for-52 (.442) with two home runs and 14 RBIs against the right-hander. Mike Moustakas is 10-for-57 (.175( off Verlander with one home run, while Alex Gordon is 18-for-86 (.209) with three home runs.
While most of the Royals' veterans have faced Verlander several times, few of the Tigers have seen Eric Skoglund, the Royals starter, a 6-foot-7 left-hander. And if they have faced him, it was in the minors, for this will be his major league debut.
Skoglund was 2-3 with a 4.53 ERA in eight starts with Triple-A Omaha. With starters Danny Duffy and Nathan Karns on the disabled list, the Royals are looking for rotation candidates.
Yost has yet to see Skoglund pitch. The 24-year-old Florida native was a non-roster invitee to spring training but was injured in March and did not appear in an exhibition game.

Reds at Blue Jays

The Blue Jays could not complete the sweep Sunday against the Rangers. They will send out Mike Bolsinger (0-2, 5.75 ERA) on Wednesday to try to complete the job against the Reds.
Toronto put itself in position for the sweep by following a 17-2 win on Monday with a 6-4 win Tuesday on a two-run homer in the eighth by Kendrys Morales.
The Reds will send out Tim Adleman (3-2, 4.95 ERA) in hopes of salvaging a win and finishing a seven-game road trip with a winning record. They are 3-3 on the trip with one postponement. The Blue Jays (25-27) are beginning to feel good about themselves as players return from the disabled list.
Shortstop Troy Tulowitzki, who hit a grand slam Monday, returned Friday, as did third baseman Josh Donaldson, who on Tuesday became the ninth Blue Jay to hit a homer into the 500 level at the Rogers Centre.
J.A. Happ returned from the DL on Tuesday and pitched an encouraging four innings. Francisco Liriano is scheduled to return Friday to start against the New York Yankees. He also gave credit to the players who were filling in for those who were injured.
The Reds (24-27) hope things change when Adleman opposes the Blue Jays for the first time in his career.
He allowed one hit and two walks over eight scoreless innings Friday when he got the win over the Philadelphia Phillies. He retired 21 of his final 23 batters in the game. He is 3-1 with a 5.11 ERA in May.
Bolsinger could be making his final start for the Blue Jays in a while. He has been filling in as injuries depleted Toronto's rotation, but with Happ returning and Liriano about to return, Bolsinger may not be needed in a starting role.
He has allowed 15 walks in 20 1/3 innings in his four starts, which has hurt him. In his last start, Bolsinger yielded six hits, four walks and three runs (two earned) in 4 2/3 innings in a no-decision against Texas on Friday. He is 1-0 with a 3.18 ERA in one career start against Cincinnati.

Astros at Twins

Paulino will be making his first appearance for Houston this season. The right-hander, considered one of the organization's top pitching prospects, was 0-1 with a 5.14 ERA in three major league appearances last season, making one start. He has never faced Minnesota.
The Twins will have left-hander Hector Santiago (4-4, 4.31 ERA) on the mound. Santiago is 1-3 with a 4.01 ERA in 11 career appearances (nine starts) against the Astros. He took a loss in his last outing against Houston, allowing five runs (four earned) in 5 1/3 innings on Aug. 9, 2016.
Minnesota will be looking to Santiago to stem the slide at home. The Twins have lost four of the five games on their homestand and are 12-17 at Target Field.
They also are looking for some momentum after a tough 15-inning loss Sunday, which was followed by losses in the first two games of the series against the Astros. Houston used an 11-run eighth inning to win Monday's game, then rolled to a 7-2 win Tuesday.
The Astros hope their starters stay healthy now. Keuchel recently returned from the DL, but Charlie Morton went on the DL last weekend because of a right lat strain.
Musgrove is expected to miss only one start.Meanwhile, the Astros' offense keeps clicking along. A day after the big inning spurred an epic comeback, Houston put up 10 hits Tuesday.
Jose Altuve had four hits Tuesday, giving him seven in the series. Alex Bregman, hitting ninth, homered Tuesday for the second consecutive game.
With an offense led by the likes of Jose Altuve and Carlos Correa, the Houston Astros lead the American League in runs scored this season. Their shutdown bullpen shortens games, and they have two top-line starters in Dallas Keuchel

A's at Indians

Right-hander Danny Salazar will be on call for relief work for the first time since being pulled out of the Indians' rotation. Salazar, who struggled badly in 10 starts this season, has been moved to the bullpen in hopes of getting him straightened out and back pitching as he did last year, when he was selected to the American League All-Star team.
The move was made after Salazar went 3-5 with a 5.50 ERA while averaging almost five walks per nine innings in his 10 starts. The Indians used the same tactic a couple of years ago with Carlos Carrasco, who went to the bullpen as a struggling starter, was able to reboot, and eventually returned to the rotation as a dependable, productive starter. Team officials hope the same thing happens with Salazar.
Oakland, meanwhile, is trying to get its season turned around. The A's have a run differential of minus-51, and Bob Melvin has used a different lineup in each of the team's past 45 games, but to little effect.
The A's continue to be plagued by strikeouts. In the first two games of the Cleveland series, Oakland hitters struck out 29 times, including 19 K's in their 9-4 loss Tuesday. At one point in the Tuesday game, Cleveland's Trevor Bauer struck out 10 of 12 batters.
The pitching matchup Wednesday will be Oakland's Sean Manaea (3-3, 4.35 ERA) against Cleveland's Mike Clevinger (2-1, 2.82).
Manaea has a streak of 14 consecutive games in which he has allowed five hits or fewer while pitching two or more innings. That is the longest such streak by an American League pitcher since at least 1913.
Manaea is coming off a strong start in his last outing, a 4-1 victory over the New York Yankees on Friday in which he pitched seven scoreless innings of four-hit ball. He struck out eight and walked one. In his only career appearance against the Indians on Aug. 23, 2016, Manaea was the winning pitcher in a 9-1 A's victory. In that game, Manaea pitched seven innings, allowing one run on three hits with eight strikeouts and two walks.
Clevinger was recalled from Triple-A Columbus on May 7 when Corey Kluber was placed on the disabled list. Clevinger's last start was the worst of his five starts replacing Kluber. In a 6-4 loss to Kansas City on Friday, he pitched five innings, giving up four runs on eight hits, two of them home runs.
In his first four starts replacing Kluber, Clevinger was 2-1 with a 1.56 ERA and held opposing batters to a .111 batting average.
Clevinger will be starting against Oakland for the first time in his career. He pitched an inning of relief in the game Manaea started against Cleveland last summer, and he gave up three runs on four hits.

Yankees at O's

The Yankees are displaying power this season, led by rookie right fielder Aaron Judge, who has 17 home runs and a team-high 37 RBIs. On Tuesday, Brett Gardner and Matt Holliday each hit a pair of solo homers, which took the pressure off starter Luis Severino.
Girardi appreciates that type of production from his hitters, especially against Baltimore, which has a high-powered offense of its own.
Baltimore manager Buck Showalter has also been impressed with the Yankees this season. The Orioles' pitchers will need to do a much better job containing New York's lineup to avoid losing a home series for just the second time this season.
"They're a really good club," Showalter said. "They're going to be really hard to beat."
The Yankees' Masahiro Tanaka (5-4, 5.86 ERA) appears to be getting back on track. The right-hander allowed just one run and had a career-high 13 strikeouts in his last outing against the Oakland A's, but he still endured his third consecutive loss. In his previous two starts, Tanaka allowed a total of 14 runs on 16 hits over just 4 2/3 innings, which put added pressure on the bullpen.
Tanaka is 1-1 with a 2.74 ERA in six career starts against Baltimore. He got a no-decision at Camden Yards on April 8, when he pitched five innings of three-run ball.
The Orioles will counter with right-hander Kevin Gausman, who has also pitched better after some early struggles. He has thrown consecutive quality starts and has shown better command recently.
In his last outing, Friday against the Houston Astros, Gausman (2-4, 6.17 ERA) allowed two runs on a pair of solo homers over 6 2/3 innings. The Orioles, however, could not muster any offense in a 2-0 loss.
Gausman has enjoyed some success against the Yankees over his career, going 6-3 with a 2.59 ERA in 19 appearances (13 starts).

Brewers at Mets

The Brewers dropped the first two games before earning a 7-1 victory Wednesday night.
Milwaukee (28-25) goes for the split behind right-handed pitcher Chase Anderson (3-1, 3.72 ERA). New York (23-28) counters with right-hander Zack Wheeler (3-2, 3.83).
Anderson is coming off one of his best starts of his major league career Saturday, when he earned the win after allowing one hit over seven shutout innings in the Brewers' 6-1 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks. The 29-year-old carried a no-hitter into the eighth inning and was lifted after allowing a leadoff single to Diamondbacks shortstop Nick Ahmed on his career-high 114th pitch.Wheeler capped a strong May on Saturday, when he didn't factor into the decision after giving up three runs over six innings as the Mets fell to the Pittsburgh Pirates, 5-4, in 10 innings. He left in line for the win before closer Addison Reed blew a one-run lead in the ninth inning.
Wheeler, who missed the previous two seasons recovering from Tommy John surgery, went 2-0 with a 2.74 ERA in four May starts as he emerged as the Mets' second-most reliable pitcher behind ace right-hander Jacob deGrom.
Anderson is 0-2 with a 4.80 ERA in three career starts against the Mets. Wheeler is 1-0 with a 1.54 ERA in two career starts against the Brewers.
Milwaukee hopes the top of its lineup continues to produce after Eric Sogard and Eric Thames had big games in Wednesday's 7-1 victory. They went a combined 3-for-5 with five walks in 10 plate appearances with Thames driving in Sogard with his 14th home run of the season.
The teams conclude the regular season series Thursday. The Brewers swept the Mets in a three-game series at Miller Park from May 12-14.

D'Backs at Marlins

The surprising Arizona Diamondbacks (33-22), one of only top six teams in the major leagues playing at least .600 ball this season, are set to invade Marlins Park on Thursday night to play the Miami Marlins (21-30).This game appears to be a mismatch seeing as Miami is in the bottom six, but look again. The Marlins have won a season-high four consecutive games and are coming off their first series sweep since last August. Miami has also won two straight series for the first time all season.
Things are looking so positive for the Marlins -- at least compared to the dour outlet of a week ago -- that Miami first baseman Justin Bour was able to make fun of himself Wednesday after a clumsy defensive play.
Bour failed to dig out a low throw by shortstop JT Riddle. When Bour went to retrieve the ball in foul territory, he nearly fell backward into the stands along the first base line.Yes, the good times -- and lines -- are rolling for the Marlins, who are 6-2 in their past eight games, a streak that started when manager Don Mattingly moved cleanup hitter Giancarlo Stanton to the No. 2 hole in the batting order.
Stanton is hitting .414 with three homers since being moved up in the order. However, Stanton missed the Wednesday game because of what was called a cramp in his left hamstring.
The Marlins did just fine without Stanton, slugging three home runs and beating the Philadelphia Phillies 10-2.
Stanton, Mattingly said, is likely to play Thursday. But Marlins second baseman Dee Gordon, who is hitting .386 in his past 15 games and has 16 steals this season, may be rested Thursday because of an undisclosed injury to his right leg.
Thursday's pitching matchup favors the Diamondbacks, who will throw veteran right-hander Zack Greinke (6-3, 3.24 ERA) against Miami left-hander Jeff Locke, who will make his Marlins and 2017 debut.
Greinke, 33, has won five of his past six decisions. The only loss during that stretch was a 6-1 defeat at Milwaukee on Saturday.
"Our whole team played pretty terrible, including me," Greinke said after that effort. "I didn't do my best."
Usually, though, Greinke does pretty close to his best, which is why he is fifth in the National League with an average of 10.5 strikeouts per nine innings.
But Greinke, who is 5-0 with a 2.49 ERA in seven home starts, is 1-3 with a 4.62 ERA in four road outings. He is almost equally tough on left-handed batters (.227 average) as he is versus righties (.210).
Greinke has allowed 11 homers, which is alarming. His home run per nine innings ratio of 1.4 is his worst since his rookie year of 2004. And the Marlins have three batters -- Bour, Stanton and Marcell Ozuna -- with at least 14 homers.
The Marlins, though, have always been Greinke's comfort team. He is 4-0 with a 2.96 ERA in eight career outings against Miami. The Marlins are the only opponent in the majors that has yet to defeat Greinke.
Locke, 29, was an All-Star in 2013 with the Pittsburgh Pirates. He signed a one-year contract with Miami in the offseason but had arm issues in spring training.
Locke is 35-38 with a 4.41 ERA over his career, including 1-2 with a 6.57 ERA in five appearances (four starts) versus Arizona.
The Marlins, though, could have a significant advantage on Thursday because the Diamondbacks were traveling Wednesday night from Pittsburgh, where Arizona won 6-5 in 14 innings.
Arizona had to go to its bullpen for eight innings. So aside from being travel-weary, the Diamondbacks may be a bit short on relievers.
Following a three-game losing streak, Arizona captured the last two games against the Pirates.

Rockies at Marlins

Pitching Thursday afternoon will be left-hander Kyle Freeland (5-3, 3.43 ERA) and Seattle right-hander Yovani Gallardo (2-5, 5.76). Freeland has allowed five homers in his first 10 starts, and Gallardo has given up seven in the same span.
Gallardo will be making his 12th career appearance, and 11th start, against the Rockies, against whom he is 0-5 with a 5.70 ERA.
Freeland has yet to face the Mariners in his rookie season. He has been strong on the road, going 3-0 with a 2.89 ERA away from Coors Field.
The Mariners will be looking to sweep the home-and-home set after beating the Rockies for the third day in a row Wednesday, when James Paxton and three relievers combined on a four-hitter in a 5-0 victory.

Astros at Rangers

Some of the drama normally associated in a series between the Texas Rangers and Houston Astros will be missing when the teams begin a three-game set Friday at Globe Life Park. The Astros have taken care of that with a blistering start that has them 12 games up on the Rangers in the American League West two months into the season. Houston is clicking on all cylinders heading into the opener and has its ace on the mound in left-hander Dallas Keuchel (8-0, 1.81 ERA).Texas, which has lost eight of its last 11 games, will counter with its ace in right-hander Yu Darvish (5-3, 2.97 ERA) as the Rangers try to get something going against the team with the best record in baseball.Darvish has had some success against Houston, going 4-4 with a 3.51 ERA in 12 career starts. Darvish hasn't faced the Astros yet this year and was winless in three starts against Houston in 2016.
Having Keuchel on the mound will help Houston, too. This will be the third Darvish vs. Keuchel matchup. Darvish hasn't won either game and Keuchel has one victory.
Keuchel has helped propel Houston to the best 54-game start in team history. He's unbeaten in his 10 starts and his eight-game winning streak is the longest by a Houston pitcher in a season since Roger Clemens had a nine-game streak in 2004. Dating back to last season, Keuchel has won 10 straight decisions, which is the fifth-longest streak in franchise history.
The Rangers have been tough on Keuchel. He's 5-7 with a 4.24 ERA in 18 career starts. But the last time he faced Texas, in 2016, he tossed a complete-game shutout.
Keuchel's unbeaten start is just one of the reasons the Astros are playing so well heading into the series against Texas.
The Astros lead the majors in batting average, runs scored and on-base percentage. They trail only the Washington Nationals in OPS and slugging.
Those are the kind of stats that have the Astros on the brink of another impressive number. A win Friday will move them 23 games over .500 for the first time since 2005, which just happens to be the only time the Astros have been to the World Series.

Cards at Cubs

The Cubs (25-27) are two games under .500 for the first time in manager Joe Maddon's tenure as they open a three-game series with the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday, part of a 10-game homestand.
Chicago returns following a West Coast road trip in which a 3-3 split might have been a reasonable outcome. Instead, the Cubs dropped all six -- three to the National League West co-leading Los Angeles Dodgers and three to the last-place San Diego Padres. The Cubs are struggling at the plate with a team .235 average with starters such as Kyle Schwarber (.165), Addison Russell (.216) and Anthony Rizzo (.227) all lagging. Chicago is also having troubles with runners in scoring position, batting just .211.
Yet Chicago remains in third place in the NL Central, just three games behind the first-place Milwaukee Brewers. Moreover, the Cubs are 14-11 at Wrigley Field, including a 7-2 mark in their last homestand.
Chicago sends right-hander John Lackey (4-5, 5.18 ERA) against Cardinals righty Lance Lynn (4-3, 2.93 ERA) on Friday.
Lackey has lost his past two starts. On Saturday against the Dodgers, he gave up five runs on six hits in a five-inning outing as the Cubs were blanked 5-0.
Lackey is 2-1 with a 2.48 ERA in five career appearances -- all quality starts -- against the Cardinals, his former club. He allowed three earned runs in six innings on April 6, his last start against St. Louis.
The Cardinals (26-25) are second in the NL Central, 1 1/2 behind the Brewers after two straight wins over the Dodgers. On Thursday, they scored a 2-0 victory at Busch Stadium as Jedd Gyorko had his team-leading sixth three-hit game.
Lynn is set for his first start against Chicago this year. He currently ranks fourth among NL pitchers in opponents' average (.199), fifth in ERA (2.36) and sixth in WHIP (1.06). His .139 average against right-handers is tops in baseball.
Lynn, who missed the 2016 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery, has a 6-6 record and 4.11 ERA against the Cubs in 16 career appearances (15 starts). At Wrigley Field, Lynn is 2-3 with a 4.76 ERA and has lost three of his last five starts there.
He allowed four runs on six hits in his last outing, a 8-4 loss to the Colorado Rockies on Sunday.

Braves at Reds

The Braves open a series at Great American Ball Park,on Friday, Atlanta plans to activate third baseman Adonis Garcia and left-handed reliever Eric O'Flaherty from the 10-day disabled list, according to Braves manager Brian Snitker. O'Flaherty has been out since May 20 with a lower back strain, while Garcia has been sidelined since May 16 due to Achilles tendinitis.
Phillips was traded to Atlanta on the eve of spring training in exchange for a pair of pitching prospects.
Right-hander Bronson Arroyo, Phillips' teammate in Cincinnati for eight seasons, will take the mound for the Reds on Friday. Arroyo, 40, has experienced plenty of ups and downs during his comeback after missing more than two seasons because of multiple surgeries.
Arroyo is set to make his 11th start of the season and his 276th start in a Reds uniform. He will be facing Atlanta for the 19th time, 18th as a starter. In those appearances, Arroyo is 7-4 with a 5.14 ERA.
Arroyo (3-4, 6.62 ERA) has pitched at least five innings in each of his past four starts but is 0-2 in those outings. He allowed three home runs in his last start, a 4-3 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies.
The Braves will counter with right-hander Mike Foltynewicz (3-5, 4.44 ERA). He is 1-0 with a 3.09 ERA versus Cincinnati in two career starts. He did not face the Reds last season.
Cincinnati is 32-20 all-time against the Braves at Great American Ball Park. The Reds will play in Atlanta's newly opened SunTrust Park in August.
Both teams are scuffling coming into the series. Cincinnati (24-28) has lost four of five, while Atlanta (22-29) has dropped six of eight.

Nats at A's

Ross has had mixed results in two starts since being recalled from Triple-A Syracuse. On May 23, he allowed one run and five hits in eight innings in a 10-1 win over Seattle with six strikeouts and no walks. Then on Sunday against San Diego, Ross gave up five runs and 12 hits in four innings of a 5-3 loss. He's 2-1 with a 6.18 ERA.
The Nationals opened the three-game interleague series with a 13-3 win over the A's, pounding out 20 hits with five homers. All that despite being without slugging right fielder Bryce Harper, who served the second game of a three-game suspension for fighting Giants reliever Hunter Strickland on Monday after being hit by a Strickland fastball.
Harper will serve the final game of his suspension Saturday and return to the lineup on Sunday against Oakland.
A's right-hander Daniel Mengden will try to bounce back after a rough outing against Cleveland in his 2017 major-league debut on Monday after being recalled from Triple-A Nashville. Mengden gave up five runs and seven hits in 3 1/3 innings of a 5-3 loss. He opened the season on the disabled list after undergoing surgery on his right foot during the offseason.
Mengden said he had been bothered by turf toe or plantar fasciitis since his college career but continued pitching through pain. During a conditioning workout in the offseason, he broke a bone in his foot and opted for surgery.
Mengden will face the Nationals for the first time in his career. He's 0-7 in eight career starts at the Coliseum and 0-7 in seven career starts during the day.

White Sox at Tigers

Zimmermann (4-4, 6.47 ERA) has made five starts of six innings, four lasting between five and 5 2/3 innings and one of 4 2/3 innings. But he's given up 16 home runs among 70 hits in 55 2/3 innings.
He faced the White Sox in Chicago last Sunday and gave up seven runs on eight hits in five innings in taking the loss. Zimmermann is making his eighth start against the White Sox and is 4-2 with a 5.63 ERA.Right-hander Miguel Gonzalez (3-5, 6.99 ERA) will start for the White Sox, having halted a five-game losing streak in his last start, a win over Detroit in Chicago in which he retired the first 18 batters. Andrew Romine reached base on a single to begin the seventh, a ball that originally was ruled an error.
Gonzalez has a 3-5 career record against Detroit over 12 appearances but his ERA is 7.02. Ten of those 12 games have been starts. He was tagged for six runs in six innings earlier this season at Comerica Park. The White Sox may have to make a bullpen change prior to Saturday's game. Right-hander Michael Ynoa had to come out of Friday night's game with a sore right quad.

Astros at Rangers

The Texas Rangers have little chance of catching the first-place Houston Astros in the American League West as they trail by 14 games in the American League West. That doesn't mean Sunday's start for left-hander Martin Perez (2-5, 4.19 ERA) isn't important. Perez knows that if the Rangers are going to be a postseason contender, they have to beat teams such as Houston. He's hoping that starts Sunday when the Rangers try to snap a three-game losing streak and end Houston's nine-game winning streak. The Astros have scored 13 times against the Rangers in the first two games of the series and handed losses to starters Yu Darvish and Andrew Cashner. At least Perez has some history on his side against a red-hot Houston team.Perez has been dominant in his career against the Astros, going 5-3 with a 2.49 ERA in nine starts. Seven of those starts have been quality outings, but he hasn't faced the Astros this season. While Perez said the Astros are more aggressive at the plate than they have been in years past, he doesn't plan on changing how he approaches the start.Perez has pitched well recently, logging quality starts in four of his last five outings. The lone clunker was his last start, as he allowed a season high in runs (five) and hits (nine) in a 10-8 loss to Tampa Bay.
The white-hot Astros will turn to right-hander Brad Peacock (2-0, 2.13 ERA) in their bid to run their winning streak to 10. He's not a bad option, either. Peacock was dominant as a reliever to start the season before moving to the rotation.
Sunday's start will be his third straight since joining the rotation. He's had eight strikeouts in each of his first two starts, but hasn't won a game as a starter in the majors since 2014. He's faced the Rangers seven times in his career, including five as a starter. He's had solid numbers, too. While his record in the seven outings is 1-3, he sports a 3.41 ERA in those games.
The way the Astros are going, his chances Sunday are pretty good.
Despite the success the Astros have had overall and against the Rangers, winning five of six this year, Houston manager A.J. Hinch isn't overlooking Texas.

Red Sox at O's

Chris Sale will try and extend his personal winning streak to six games as the Boston Red Sox look to earn a split of their four-game series with the Baltimore Orioles on Sunday.Sale (6-2, 2.77) has tied a career best with his five straight victories. He has been a strikeout machine this year, although slowing a bit in his last two starts. The left-hander has fanned 110 in 78 innings so far this season. Sale struck out nine in his last start, beating his former teammates from the White Sox despite allowing six runs on 10 hits in five innings.Sale is 3-2 with a 3.19 career ERA versus Baltimore. The Orioles will start right-hander Chris Tillman (1-2, 5.87). He is trying to become consistent after missing the first five weeks due to shoulder bursitis issues.Tillman has found more success versus the Red Sox than any other team in his career. The right-hander has a 10-3 record with a 2.95 ERA, the most wins he's recorded versus another team.
This will be his sixth start this season but Tillman has battled that inconsistency so far. He lasted just 2 2/3 innings in his last start, giving up five runs on seven hits in a loss versus the Yankees.
The Baltimore starting rotation has pitched well in the past week, and it will need more help from Tillman, who the team considered its No. 1 starter before the season.
Manager Buck Showalter said since the bullpen is deeper now, and the starters are going longer, that's been a big reason the Orioles have won four of their last six games, including two of the first three in this series.
The Orioles will be deciding whether to send catcher Welington Castillo (testicular injury) on rehab work before bringing him back. They are hoping he'll be ready when his disabled list time ends later in the week.
Boston second baseman Dustin Pedroia also is making steps toward coming back when his 10-day disabled list stint is up. He was placed there May 30 with a left wrist sprain.
Manager John Farrell said Pedroia took some practice swings Saturday and felt good. He could be taking batting practice when the team plays in New York versus the Yankees starting Tuesday.
Josh Rutledge has filled in for Pedroia and was in the original lineup for the Saturday game but became a late scratch due to dehydration issues. Deven Marrero replaced him.
Craig Kimbrel earned the save for Boston by posting the final four outs in Saturday's 5-2 victory. However, he gave up a hit to Mark Trumbo, the first time this season that a right-handed hitter got a base hit versus Kimbrel.
Right-handers were 0-for-47 before that hit, and the Orioles have a lineup loaded with right-handed batters. Kimbrel has struck out 48 batters in 25 1/3 innings so far this season.

Cards at Cubs
Chicago's Kyle Hendricks and St. Louis' Michael Wacha are looking to bounce back from rough starts when their teams play the series finale Sunday. The defending World Series champion Cubs are aiming for a three-game sweep.
Hendricks (4-3, 3.75 ERA) allowed five runs in five innings against the San Diego Padres for the most runs he has given up since Aug. 14, 2015, ending a streak of 48 starts allowing no more than four runs, the longest streak in team history.Despite the rough outing, the right-hander is 3-2 with a 2.81 ERA in his last seven starts after he went 1-1 with a 6.19 ERA in his first three starts of the season.
Hendricks is 1-2 with a 3.56 ERA in seven career starts against St. Louis. In his last start against the Cardinals at Wrigley, he matched a career high with 12 strikeouts.
In Wacha's last start, he gave up four runs (three earned) in three innings against the Los Angeles Dodgers. The right-hander (2-3, 3.99) has pitched a combined seven innings in his last two starts after throwing six quality starts.
Wacha is 4-4 with a 5.90 ERA in 12 career games, including 10 starts, against the Cubs. He limited Chicago to two runs in 6 2/3 innings in their last meeting.
The Cubs are planning to bat left fielder Kyle Schwarber ninth again Sunday. After Schwarber went 0-for-2 with two strikeouts in the seventh spot on Friday, manager Joe Maddon moved Schwarber to the bottom of the lineup. He responded with his first career grand slam and raised his average to .166.
The Cubs have won two straight after dropping six in a row.

Giants at Brewers

When the 2017 season began, most observers figured the San Francisco Giants would be battling for a postseason berth while the Milwaukee Brewers would be way back behind the defending World Series champion Chicago Cubs as they continue their complete rebuild. Two months into the season, though, the two teams' fortunes are reversed. The surprising Brewers narrowly hold first place in the National League Central, while the Giants are trying to figure out how to climb out of a tie for last place in the NL West. The teams open a three-game series on Monday at Miller Park. Milwaukee right-hander Junior Guerra (1-0, 1.84 ERA) will oppose San Francisco right-hander Jeff Samardzija (1-7, 4.63 ERA).
Brewers closer Corey Knebel admitted Sunday that he regularly checks the standings.Guerra, who has never faced the Giants in his brief major league career, will try to continue a recent stretch of strong efforts from Milwaukee's starters, who have combined for a 1.32 ERA over the past 10 games. The group is 5-1 during that stretch with 61 strikeouts and just 19 walks.
San Francisco arrives in Milwaukee after dropping two of three in Philadelphia, nine of the past 12 overall. The Giants are 12 1/2 games behind the front-running Colorado Dodgers in the West.
The Giants should get a boost from the return of Hunter Pence, who was activated from the disabled list but didn't start Sunday in Philly. Pence, who had been out since May 13 due to a strained left hamstring, entered as a sub and went 0-for-1.
To make room for Pence to come back, the Giants returned their top prospect, infielder Christian Arroyo, to Triple-A Sacramento.
Samardzija will look to bounce back from rough Tuesday outing at Washington, where he allowed three runs on nine hits in four innings during a 6-3 loss.
The veteran right-hander has faced Milwaukee 24 times (10 starts) in his 10-year career. He is 2-6 with a 4.82 against the Brewers with an 0-3 record and 6.15 ERA in 14 appearances (seven starts) at Miller Park.

White Sox at Rays

The Rays are 29-30 while the White Sox (24-31) are tied for last place in the AL Central, struggling to get out of their own downward spiral.
Chicago will try to get back on track with left-hander Jose Quintana, who is 2-7 with one of the highest ERAs in the AL at 5.60. He has been a .500 pitcher in the previous two seasons but has struggled to find any consistency on the mound in 2017.
Quintana has much better numbers in his career against the Rays with a 2.49 ERA since the start of 2014, including a 2.03 ERA at Tropicana Field. He'll go up against Rays right-hander Chris Archer (4-3, 3.74 ERA).
Archer has a career 3-0 record against the White Sox with a 4.11 ERA. Last year, as he sought to avoid the infamy of a 20-loss season, he won his final start of the campaign against the White Sox, scattering three runs in 6 2/3 innings.
Archer hasn't returned to the All-Star form he had in 2014-15 -- he had a combined 17 starts allowing three hits or less in those two seasons. Last year, he had just three such starts, and this year he has yet to give up less than four hits in 12 starts.
The Rays have had bright spots -- Corey Dickerson is a potential All-Star with a team-best .336 average, but that's a full 70 points higher than his next closest teammate. Logan Morrison is among the AL leaders with 16 home runs, but the team's biggest stars, Evan Longoria and Kevin Kiermaier, haven't been as sharp.
Coming off an off day could reset the Rays, and Cash will be hopeful to move away from all-around poor play in the series against the Mariners.

Nats at Dodgers

Nationals right-hander Stephen Strasburg (7-1, 2.91 ERA) will oppose Dodgers left-hander Clayton Kershaw (7-2, 2.28). It will be the first time the two stars have met head-to-head.
Last season, the two were slated to square off on June 20 at Dodger Stadium, but Strasburg was a late scratch due to a strained upper back.
Nationals manager Dusty Baker believes his hitters should embrace the challenge again of competing again against Kershaw. The Nationals haven't fared well against Kershaw, who is 10-2 with a 2.02 ERA in 14 career games against Washington.
Kershaw allowed a run on six hits with eight strikeouts and no walks in seven innings in a 4-1 Los Angeles victory in the June 2016 contest at Dodger Stadium.
In his last start, Kershaw struck out a season-high 14 batters with one walk and limited the Milwaukee Brewers to a run on two hits in seven innings on Friday. Kershaw did not factor into the decision, but the Dodgers earned a 2-1 win.
Strasburg has won his last four outings, and he has gone at least six innings in all but one of his 11 starts this season. Strasburg fanned seven and walked three, allowing two runs on four hits in seven innings of a 13-3 romp over the Oakland A's on Friday.
Strasburg hasn't lost a start since April 29 in a 5-3 setback to the New York Mets.
Against the Dodgers, Strasburg is 1-1 with a 3.06 ERA in five career starts. The last time he faced the Dodgers, Strasburg struck out 10 but yielded six runs on seven hits in a 6-3 defeat on July 21, 2016. Los Angeles third baseman Justin Turner tagged Strasburg for a pair of homers.
Despite the star power of Wednesday's series finale, it still will be hard to top Tuesday's contest, a 2-1 decision won by the Nationals behind 14 strikeouts in seven innings by Max Scherzer.
Sacrifice flies by Bryce Harper in the first and Daniel Murphy in the fourth inning were the difference for the Nationals, who are 7-1 on their nine-game road trip.
Adrian Gonzalez drove in the lone run for the Dodgers, who have dropped three in a row. Brandon McCarthy (5-3) took the loss despite a solid performance, giving up two runs and three hits in seven innings.
The teams had just four hits apiece.

Nats at Mets

The Nationals will look to continue burying the Mets in the division race on Saturday afternoon, when the two rivals meet again at Citi Field.
Washington's Stephen Strasburg (7-2, 3.27 ERA) is scheduled to face New York's Seth Lugo (1-0, 1.29 ERA) in a battle of right-handers.
The Nationals cruised to their second straight win Friday, when ace right-hander Max Scherzer struck out 10 over eight innings in a 7-2 victory.Washington (41-26) has outscored the Mets (30-36) 15-5 in the first two games of the series.
The fast start against the Mets comes immediately after the Nationals went 2-5 on a week-long homestand, during which they were outscored 46-34 by the Baltimore Orioles, Texas Rangers and Atlanta Braves.
"I think we hit a little funk there at home just for whatever reason, we just didn't play good as a team," Scherzer said Friday night.
But maybe getting on the road was all the Nationals needed. Washington (23-12 away from Nationals Park) is virtually tied with the Colorado Rockies (25-13) for the best road record in the NL.
"We've played really good ball on the road, we've been some road warriors," Scherzer said. "Off to a good start here, taking two from a division rival."
With the back-to-back wins, the Nationals increased their NL East lead over the now third-place Mets to 10 1/2 games.
New York, which won five of its previous six games heading into Thursday, now needs to figure out how to turn things around Washington, which has won all five games between the teams this season at Citi Field.
"We're playing a division team, the first-place team, and we want to beat these guys," said Mets left-hander Steven Matz, who took the loss Friday night. "It's never fun losing, especially to guys in your division."
Strasburg didn't factor into the decision in his most recent start last Sunday, when he gave up a season-high six runs over a season-low five innings in the Nationals; 11-10 loss to the Braves. Despite the subpar numbers, Strasburg was in line for the win until the Washington bullpen allowed five runs over the final two innings.
This will be the second start of the season for Lugo, who missed the first 60 games due to a partially torn right UCL. He earned the win in his debut last Sunday after allowing one run over seven innings as the Mets beat the Atlanta Braves, 2-1.
Strasburg is 7-4 with a 2.64 ERA in 13 career starts against the Mets. Lugo is 1-0 with a 1.00 ERA in two games (one start) against the Nationals.

Padres at Brewers

The Brewers won't need to produce too much offense to help starter Chase Anderson. He's allowed just one earned run in his last four starts, spanning 27 2/3 innings (0.33 ERA), to drop his season ERA to 2.83 -- the fifth-best mark in the National League.
"It's just been a little bit of an evolution for Chase," Counsell said. "His curveball is a bigger weapon. A little bit of velocity increase. Then you combine that with some more confidence because of that. He's a four-pitch pitcher right now. He's up to 95 mph.
"You start to use those adjectives, that's a pretty good pitcher."
Anderson took a no-decision when he faced the Padres on May 15 at Petco Park and is 3-1 with a 4.02 ERA in seven career starts against San Diego.
Rookie right-hander Dinelson Lamet gets the start for the Padres, who are trying to bounce back after their three-game winning streak was snapped Friday night.
Lamet is limiting right handers to a .138 average this season (4-for-29) while lefties have batted .333 against him. He's worked five innings or more in three of his five starts but has allowed seven runs in each of his last two outings.
"Command is the big concern," Padres manager Andy Green said. "You have to command the fastball. I think inside of him is the ability to do that; he's shown that. That's two (games) in a row now. It's time for him to bounce back and really attack the zone with the fastball. The real fastball -- not the held-back, controlled fastball. He's not a control, command pitcher.
"He's a stuff guy, and he has to come at you with that stuff."
The Padres' offense had been hot before arriving in Milwaukee. They collected 34 hits in a three-game sweep at Cincinnati but were held to just four Friday night -- three of which were home runs by Wil Myers, Hunter Renfroe and Yangervis Solarte.

D'Backs at Phillies

Godley will be making his first career start against the Phillies, though he's faced them once before, throwing a scoreless inning in relief last June before briefly moving into the Diamondbacks' rotation the following month. After going back to the bullpen last August and September, he's established himself firmly as a starter this year -- at least it would seem.
After limiting the Milwaukee Brewers to two runs in 6 2/3 innings last Saturday, Godley improved his record to 2-1 with a 2.44 ERA since his call-up; that ERA
Godley will be opposed by Phillies right-hander Jerad Eickhoff, who takes the mound gainst the Diamondbacks (42-26) still looking for his first win of the season in his 14th start.
Eickhoff (0-7, 5.09 ERA) managed to avoid a loss his last time out when he gave up four runs (three earned) on seven hits in six innings at Boston on Monday, though that was the ninth straight start in which he's allowed up at least three runs; he's got a 6.46 ERA over that span.
In two career games against the Diamondbacks (both starts), Eickhoff is 0-1 with a 4.22 ERA. He's pitching in front of an offense that's trying to find itself, which was evident on Friday night in a 5-4 Arizona win that was decided on a two-run homer by Gregor Blanco.
Two of the club's talented but struggling young hitters, center fielder Odubel Herrera and third baseman Maikel Franco, both came through with clutch hits for the Phillies (22-44). Herrera, who's hitting .344 this month with 14 extra-base hits, had a triple and scored two runs on Friday. Franco, whose average has been hovering between .200 and .220 most of the season, had a two-run double which briefly put his team up 4-2 in the sixth inning.

Padres at Brewers

Milwaukee's rotation has combined to go 9-4 with a 2.95 ERA over its last 23 games, striking out 111 while walking just 42. But the relief corps has struggled during that same stretch and leads the National League with 19 losses and 13 blown saves.
With the exception of right-hander Neftali Feliz, who was designated for assignment last week after a season-long struggle with command, few Brewers relievers have struggled more than Carlos Torres, who served up a two-run home run to Yangervis Solarte in the 10th inning Saturday in a 7-5 loss to the Padres. Torres was a stalwart of Milwaukee's pen a year ago, going 3-3 with a 2.73 ERA in 72 appearances. Things haven't gone so well this year, though; through 36 appearances, he's 3-4 with a 4.95 mark and has had a hard time keeping the ball in the ballpark (seven home runs).
"For him, the stuff isn't different, it's just more of the plate," said Brewers manager Craig Counsell, who suggested that Torres' track record gives him a longer leash. "He's struggling with more balls over the middle of the plate and that's what's costing him. The cutter is his pitch. It's his bread and butter, it's what he's relied on his entire career. He's been finding too much of the plate with it sometimes.
"We've got choices in our bullpen, Carlos is a member of our bullpen and he needs to pitch effective innings for us."
Right-hander Jimmy Nelson will try to keep the rotation on its upswing. He comes into the game looking to tighten up after giving up seven runs on 16 hits over 11 2/3 innings in his last two outings, against the Giants and Cardinals.
He went 2-1 with a 2.28 ERA in five May starts and despite the recent hiccups, is 1-0 with a 3.20 mark in three June outings.
Nelson is 2-3 with a 3.64 ERA in five career starts against the Padres. In a 6-2 victory this season on May 16 at San Diego, Nelson allowed two runs on seven hits and struck out eight in six innings of work.
San Diego counters with Luis Perdomo (1-3, 5.16 ERA) who struck out nine against the Brewers earlier this season in one of his team-leading seven quality starts.
The Padres' offense has been riding a power surge since arriving in Milwaukee, crushing eight home runs in two games and 18 in their last eight overall. Four of those have come from Solarte, who has hit three in Milwaukee after homering in the second and 10th innings Saturday.
Wil Myers has one in each of his last two games as he gets back on track following a May swoon.
"My swing is starting to feel pretty good over the last couple of days," Myers said. "I know I'm close. It's just one of those things that sometimes it lasts longer than you want, but you just keep showing up."
Milwaukee leads the season series with San Diego, 4-2.

Mariners at Rangers

Darvish (6-4, 3.03 ERA) struck out eight in that outing, but lasted just five innings and threw 104 pitches. He knew something had to change and it has over his last two starts.
Since that start, Darvish has pitched at least seven innings in back-to-back starts and allowed a total of four earned runs. He'll be looking to add to that stretch on Sunday when the Rangers (34-33) square off against the Seattle Mariners (33-37) and right-hander Christian Bergman (3-4, 5.75).
The Rangers will be looking for a sweep after scoring 20 runs in the first two contests of the series. They also have a chance to move two games over .500 for the first time since May 23.Darvish will be putting that video to use versus Seattle, against which he's 5-3 with a 4.13 ERA lifetime. In Arlington, he's never lost to the Mariners as he's 5-0 with a 3.30 ERA in seven starts.
Darvish has faced the Mariners once this year, receiving a no-decision after allowing one run in seven innings.
While his recent numbers are good, Darvish knows he has more work to do.
"It's only two games so I am not sure if I am going in the right direction," he said. "I need a bigger sample size to determine the effect it has."
Bergman is hoping his recent sample size isn't an indicator of what's to come for him. He was terrible in his June 13 start against Minnesota, getting tagged for nine runs on 10 hits in 2 2/3 innings.
"I just need to be a little bit better with command," Bergman said. "Stay out of the middle of the plate. That was the biggest thing. When you catch the big part of the plate, things don't go right. Just get back to doing what makes me successful, throwing strikes and staying out of the middle of the plate."
Bergman pitched against the Rangers earlier this year, giving up one run in 3 2/3 innings in relief. That's the only time he's faced the Rangers in his career. He's going to have to buck a rough road trend for him Sunday, too. In his four road starts for the Mariners this year, Bergman is 1-3 with a 10.61 ERA.
He isn't too concerned about that, though.D
"I think it's too small of a sample size," Bergman said. "It's not something you really think about. There's not a lot of difference between pitching in Seattle and coming to a place like this."

D'Backs at Phillies

After handing the Phillies (22-45) their 10th loss in 11 games, the Arizona Diamondbacks (43-26) will send Robbie Ray to the mound with a sweep on their minds Sunday.
Ray (7-3, 2.62 ERA) has been lights out in his last five starts, compiling a perfect 5-0 record while allowing one run in 37 innings. Ray entered play Saturday tied for the fourth-most strikeouts (107) in baseball and he owns a 1.07 WHIP, which placed him seventh among National League hurlers.derail him in any way. They have five of the 28 qualified hitters in baseball with sub-.300 on-base percentages.
Ray faced the Phillies twice -- his only two times -- in a span of 10 days last year, once at home and once on the road. In 12 innings he posted a 4.50 ERA and a 1-1 record.
In the start at Philadelphia, Ray allowed two runs on seven hits in six innings in a 10-2 Arizona win on June 17, 2016. He struck out seven and walked one.
Rookie Ben Lively, who the Phillies hope is providing youthful energy to a group that needs a boost, is starting Sunday. The right-hander is 1-1 with a 3.00 ERA in three starts and in 21 innings he has five strikeouts and seven walks.
Phillies manager Pete Mackanin has been impressed so far with his ability to get hitters out by attacking the zone.
"If I was a pitcher on this team and saw Lively pitch, it has to make an impression and it should on the other pitchers to attack the strike zone," Mackanin said, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.
He's also faced some stiff competition, too.
In Lively's first three starts he was opposed by David Price, R.A. Dickey and Johnny Cueto, who account for two Cy Young awards and a combined eight All-Star appearances.
Fittingly, he'll face off against one of baseball's best pitchers thus far in 2017.
Like many of his colleagues, Lively will be lucky to get run support these days, no matter against Ray or whoever. Mackanin has shuffled the club's lineup many times throughout the last few weeks, trying anything to spark success.
Nothing has worked.
Since starting 11-9 in their first 20 games, the Phillies have lost 36 of 47.
Arizona, meanwhile, continues to look more and more like a team that has staying power in 2017. With good starting pitching and one of the best run-producing teams in the league, the Diamondbacks will likely find themselves in a long race out west.
Lovullo wouldn't bite Saturday when asked to comment on Dodgers manager Dave Roberts calling his team the best. He's letting the play on the field do the talking.
"We're really focused on what we do day-by-day, we're very proud of what we're accomplishing day-by-day," Lovullo said earlier in the week. "We've got a lot of baseball to go. We've put ourselves in a good position and it's time to continue moving in the right direction."
A sweep on Sunday will help.
