I don't think Boston goes undefeated at home against Detroit. I think the Stons steal at least one on the road. Should be a great series. Should be low scoring too like this past series with Clev.

I wouldn't be surprised if the series ends up being a pick 'em. Lots of money lining up on detroit hoping that hey will be viewed as sharp money - DET is the square play of this round...

i like detroit for the series. their bench is much better than the celtics. prince should hold pierce and give him problems. guards for detroit are much larger and billups will eat rondo alive.

To be fair, Slug, Doc has kinda taken Boston's bench out of a rythym entirely...although getting House back has helped.

Boston will need real Ray to stand up against the Stones. They got away in 7 in both series w/o him, now it might not be enough. Fatigue also may catch up on Boston after 14 playoff games already at this stage of post season..

we arguably had the best bench in the regular season. Agreed Doc has f'd it up in the playoffs, but the last 3 games has been much better. House is getting time. The only real diff now is that powe and davis aren't getting as many minutes. If PJ can play the rest of the way like he did today, we are in good shape. Need to get Ray going again somehow. You can tell its really gotten to his head

Boston is goneburger.

Aside from the fact no NBA champion has failed to record less than 3 road victories on their way to a title, I'm guessing no NBA Champ has ever had to go through 2 x 7 gamers prior to a conference finals.

I'm a broken record for stating the opinion the Celts road woes are the first sign of the Big-3's overuse from the reg. season (Allen is the first obvious member of this trio that's gone awol). Remember, this team had a phenomenal reg. season road record: only 5 teams had better home records than the Celts road record. So why haven't they paid the price at home that they're paying on the road for that overuse? strength of opposition - the 2 teams they've played had worse records than the West's lowest seed (Denver, who themselves got swept).

I think Detroit can win in 5, and it wouldnt suprise me if they exited Boston 2-0 up. Of course Billups health is key to what they ultimately do.

Unless Allen can get his game turned around, BC is right, Detroit could and should make pretty quick work of the Celtics in the EC Finals. Pierce against Prince is the only matchup advantage I can really single out for the Celtics, meanwhile Billups has a large edge on Rondo and Hamilton has an edge on Allen (unless he turns his game around). 'Sheed and Garnett more or less cancel each other out IMO.

KG needs to work inside more, but doubtful that he will start doing that going against sheed/dice/maxiell/ratliff.

everyone already mentioned ray allen, we'll see if he can find his touch.

kendrick perkins needs to play smarter. feed him inside and the ball is not coming back out. he has to pick his spots better.

rondo has to outrun and outhustle billups to avoid being exploited.

boston shows a lot of intensity today, but they can't let up and give up easy baskets to let their opponent get back into the game like they did today a couple times. lucky for them, detroit is the master of letting teams back into games after building leads.

should be an interesting series, I don't really know what to expect

Although I would like to see the Celtics in there, I don't think they can win the series. They haven't proven anything on the road, the Pistons are more physical, and Billups is the key difference in all matchups that are otherwise fairly even. I can't wait to see that series line. I hope it's plus something because I think it will only go down as more people start betting on it.

series line has been out since the game ended. Its det +130

This is why I think Pistons should be considered at least small favorites (I am not saying Detroit will win the series for sure, I am saying Detroit should be considered favorites) :

Peaking too early
This is what Celtics are feeling now. They're going through this classic regular season swan thing, and were ready to die in the playoffs. Two reasons why they didn't:

 • phenomenal home crowd in Boston carried them to 8 wins, most of them were convincing.
 • opposition. Atlanta, THE worst team to have made the playoffs this season, hands down. Props for the energy and "a bad matchup" for Boston but these guys have had 37 regular season wins and are a bunch of young athletic guys playing together. They have Mike Bibby running the point. Come on.

The Cavs? These guys have a horrible coach, LeBron James who was shooting bricks throughout the series and what, 3 trade deadline guys who almost stole the show? Delonte West and Wally Szczerbiak. I mean I don't want to underestimate anyone, but you had troubles beating this team, and I see some Celtics fans here being optimistic about facing the Pistons?

Seriously, wake up. This is what your team did in the regular season, amongst other things.

66-16 overall record.
31-10 on the road.

including:

Mon, Mar 17 @ San Antonio W 93-91 53-13 P. Pierce 22 P. Pierce 8
K. Garnett 8 P. Pierce 5
Tue, Mar 18 @ Houston W 94-74 54-13 K. Garnett 22 K. Garnett 11 P. Pierce 5
Thu, Mar 20 @ Dallas W 94-90 55-13 P. Pierce 22 P. Pierce 13
K. Garnett 13 S. Cassell 6

the Texas triangle sweep. First since Sacramento 2001.

This is not the same team any more. They are going through motions right now, this is a team that needs to learn from this, that needs to be coached better, that needs Rajon Rondo to have one more season with this guys to step up on the road the way he does (very well) in the Garden.

This is the team that is 8-6 SU in the playoffs:

8-0 SU at home
5-3 ATS

A team that is:

0-6 SU on the road
0-6 ATS on the road

A team that had Atlanta on the ropes twice.

number one.

number two.

32-17
and
24-18 respectively, 4th Q.

A team that showed no spine on the road. ZERO road wins going into a killer series is not a good omen. One comeback win (they had SIX losses to show for in the playoffs, would have been seven had they failed to come back in game 5 against Cleveland when the Cavs were 43-29 up).

I know this year's playoffs has been full of 'home cookin' so I know what home officiating has done to teams, but 17-2? This is the run the Cavs finished 1st half of game 6 on.

On a seventeen to two run. LeBron beat the Pistons last season scoring 29 out of 30 points in the 4th, with some phenomenal shooting, these guys played him hard, contested him, he was still knocking down shots.

Boston contested him as well. Very well. His shooting was horrendous. But there was always one Delonte West or Wally Szczerbiak or Boobie Gibson to nail the trey.

If you want to weigh the situation, let me put it this way. Boston was rather clueless on the road, Atlanta came back to win the game twice. Rivers made ZERO game breaking decisions.

It took him thirteen and a half games to realize that Rondo should be playing and not Cassell. He's talking about having to save KG and dose his minutes. OK, but you're losing games Doc. Not losing series though, not yet.

Philadelphia and Orlando. Give me those two over Atlanta and Cleveland (actually with the Cavs, it's a toss up). I like what the Cavs have done this season given the circumstances, but the Sixers played Detroit hard. Orlando is a jump shooting team with Howard in the inside but they were solid throughout the regular season. A classic regular season team here, you can't win big games in the playoffs with no D and with Hedo shooting contested treys with your team down by 11 with 4 minutes to go.

The Pistons had some bumps on the road, but they dismantled the Sixers after a few of those shockers, then did the same to the Magic, even though they had their arguably top player out for a couple of games.

They stepped up. On the road.

Boston will need hell of a lot to win this series. First of, they have to start making big plays and big shots. Analyzing Celtics wins, there is a conclusion to be made how they won mostly when they were up by DD in the 1st or 2nd quarter.

One come back win, that's it. Two times the other team came from behind to take the W, both times it was in Atlanta and Boston were 8.5 and 9.0 point favs.

The big three. These guys are tired, it's showing how they're not used to be this far, they don't have that "routine" manner in them, they lack that killer instinct, the X factor that wins big games.

playing 14 games in the playoffs won't help for sure.

Coaching? Never thought I'd say this, but give me Flip over Doc. Doc is almost as bad as Mike Brown. I thought Flip wasn't a playoff coach but he's getting there. Doc isn't. Not yet.

The Pistons will match up well against the Celts. They have bodies to throw in side, BAR or one of the SEMCON boys can throw in the number of playoff games these guys have together, more or less the same team:

Rip
Chillups
Sheed
Prince

give me Pistons bench over Celtics bench ANY DAY or ANY night.

That certainly sounds funny considering they've scored a total of FOUR points against Orlando in the last game, but seriously, give me:

Dyess (or Maxiell, whichever way you want to look at it)
Hayes
Ratliff
Stuckey
---
Amir Johnson
Afflalo (even though he hasn't played that well in the playoffs as far as production goes)
Hunter

over

Big baby
Powe
Cassell
PJ Brown
House
Posey

It's not so much about the names either, it's their game. Celtics' bench didn't play well on the road. Davis was very good in game 5 against Cleveland then played awfully in the next game.

KG has had some athletic guys guard him in the postseason but he hasn't met the experience of one Rasheed Wallace and Antonio McDyess, even Ratliff. He will need to have monster games in order to keep it up.

Jesus and Pierce, sure, had some solid games, but had some MIA games as well. That cannot happen here. Pistons will exploit that, they can disrupt their tempo by running and slowing the game since they have the backcourt to do that, plus there's no free passes for Rondo this time. This isn't Bibby or Delonte. The Pistons will step up on the road for AT LEAST one game.

I am not sure whether it will be game 1, but they will step up. Can Boston do the same in Detroit?

We'll see. All I'm saying right now, the Pistons are the team to beat, and the Celtics look like they need to step up big time to make an NBA finals appearance.

It'll be game 1.

Boston came closest to losing (& should have lost) to Cleveland in Game 1 which was obviously off their game 7 vs Atlanta, which wasnt even a close contest - simply being in a game 7 facing a round 1 exit drained them.

Now they're off a close game 7, and 14 total games, facing a rested Detroit team off a 5 game series and 11 total games. Cleveland was off a 6 game series having had half as much rest (as the Pistons) for the above mentioned Game 1.

The rest thing might be a little overrated if only because this is the NBA. I'm sure the Finals don't even start until July. I'd imagine Boston & Detroit still get a good two weeks off before they start their series.

Minor correction:

The Cavs? These guys have no coach,

very close to truth unfortunately. If one's offensive strategy comes down to "give-the-ball-to-LeBron-I'm-fine-with-whatever-he-comes-up-with", editions (1), (2) and (3)...

one shouldn't be considered a top coach. Or even any coach.

Now the Celts have to play a team that has a system, that can repeatedly beat them with experience (not overall NBA experience but playoff experience) and are tactically superior to them.

Again, I think it was Slug (pardon me if I'm wrong) who said the price will be -250/+200.

I'm not here to bash or anything, but: how. On. Earth.

Eh? the NBA finals or the ECF finals? I'm not following.

Eh? the NBA finals or the ECF finals? I'm not following.

I'm joking. But the NBA playoffs do take something like three months to complete, it's an utter joke.

What I'm not kidding about is Mike Brown. That guy might have the easiest job in the world. I'm sure he has some basketball savvy, I mean, I'm sure he has to play the part in practice, running drills or whatever. But on game day he might as well have a box of popcorn.

good points everyone. i'm also favoring the pistons over the celtics in this series. boston was lucky they escaped with the series win over the cavs. i think it was simply a case of lebron not getting his shots early in the series that gave boston the win.

not taking anything away from boston. they played enough good basketball to win against cleveland. however, how they performed against the cavs won't be good enough to defeat a more disciplined team such a sthe pistons.

also agree on the coaching situation in cleveland. the team is running without a coach.

I have to believe that Detroit takes this series...Boston has shown nothing against Atlanta and Cleveland to make me believe they can beat Detroit. If they can't win @ Atlanta or @ Cleveland, no reason to think they can win @ Detroit. While Boston plays well at home, they still have had a few really close games at home and think Detroit steals at least one game in Boston.

the pistons LY in playoffs didnt play lebron anywhere near the way boston played him this series.

the pistons LY in playoffs didnt play lebron anywhere near the way boston played him this series.

The only time James scored 40+ vs DET was in double OT - he did that in regulation vs Boston. That's aside from the fact the Cavs blew up their team and got worse this season, making Boston's task easier than Detroit's was.

That's also not mentioning the fact that the Cavs had dealt with just 10 playoff games before that ECFs last season, vs Boston's 14 games this time round (on top of the Big 3's overuse in the reg. season). Or the fact Detroit got rid of some deadwood (Chris Webber, anyone?) and is better than last season.

The Cavs were a 1 headed monster, and Boston's defense at home was enough for them to overcome that monster. Detroit has many more heads than 1, and Boston's gas tank is running awfully low.

btw, nice to see a lot of kids at blankets are still sold on the Celts, totally unmoved about what the results so far have written on the wall.

yeah, boston probably did peak too early. the pistons have learned to pace themselves, just like the spurs. the celtics went all out too early and seem to be paying for it. KG doesn't look as good as he did in the first 10-15 games of the season, and now ray allen looks out of it

First of all, Boston got the best bench in the league? I hope it was a joke! Detroit and Lakers got the best bench in the league, hands down. Spurs, Cleveland, Boston and Utah are even more or less.
I see only one chance for Boston to do something, Allen to give a good series finally and that is possible, because shooter needs only one good game to get the confidence back. The second thing is that Garnett needs to show up. One of the reason this guy always frustrated me is that he can do things that no other PF in the league can't and he can do it with ease, but he does it so rarely. He just can't be the go to guy the whole game no matter how much the teams needs him or how good have it worked so far.
I hope and believe that Detroit should win this one, but they must win one of the two first games. I find it really hard to believe that Boston will finish the playoff with 0 - 9 road record and if they win a game, Pistons will need to win two on the road, something that they capable to do, but they must win one of the first two games in Boston.
I totally agree with Satyr and his points, so don't have anything else to add to his write up.

I'm backing boston, and to go against a couple statements made:

1) lotta people saying boston had to squeak out and come from behind in a couple games at boston, but ignore that cavs had a game or two just the same. I mean, when Boston gives away a game its said that they choked cuz of lack of experience (which can be true) and even when they pull away with a tight one its said that they got lucky. I know many people have the urge to cheer against the celts cuz they are a public darling and the amateur fan knows about them, and I know that its true- to 'fade the public'. but truth is, celts aren't even the favorites to win despite home court- listen to all of the 'professionals' that rip on the celts

2) Celts just beat the same Cavs team that knocked Detroit out last yr. I wouldn't say it was luck, as the games were played, and Boston won, plain and simple. The Cavs are arguably better this yr than last yr (the staff thought so when making the trade)

3) One argument is that Ray Allen is fading. However, we are talking about Ray Allen- arguably the best shooter of this era- perenial all-star. potential hall of famer. Being benched in the 4th should be motivation. Essentially, Boston has won 2 series of the playoffs without one of its all-stars. Not many teams can say that, if any. I fully expect Allen to bounce back from this slump and be the savior for the Detroit series, simply because of matchups.

1) Billups does have strenght/size advantage over Rondo, although he hasn't especially shined over Rondo in the reg season series. He could be saving it, but this might not be a 100% PG forced to guard one of the speediest player sleft in the playoffs. Billups def still has an edge. Caseel may come in and I do not think Billups will be able to abuse Cassel
2) every1 knows Pierce has issues with taller defenders: IE Deng/Prince. Although game 7 may have gotten him his stroke.
3) KG and Sheed should be interesting. I say edge goes to Boston, although Sheed certainly can hold his own. Sheed does not have an edge on KG as he does on pretty much any1 else in the league.
4) Perk/Brown vs Mcdyss/Maxiell- ehh. similiar very close to cancelling out.

comes down to Ray vs Hamilton imo. Hamilton been tearing it up, but ima if Ray Allen can say match Hamilton, not necessarily point wise (since hamilton is a more crucial part of detroit offense than ray is) then Boston wins with HCA.

another legit case ppl make is detroit's rest saying itll especially come in on game 1? Id imagine Detroit rust would be a bigger issue than Boston rest.

Motivation goes to Boston imo as well.

I agree with many of your thoughts as well, but first of all, all the reasons are why Boston can be equal to Detroit, not better than them, so still, I believe that Detroit has the upper hand, since Boston needs Allen in form (and he isn't) to be equal and Detroit just needs the things to go as they been going so far to go through. But two things about what you arote. Allen is HOF? Why? I don't see even one reason for him to be such. I like the guy back to UConn days, but he isn't hall of famer.
Secondly, why Billups wouldn't abuse Cassel? Cassel is a terrible defender and he isn't even trying anymore (not that when he tried he was any good)? Billups, if he is healthy is a huge advantage on any Celtics PG, maybe House of all PG's in Boston is the best match up...

I find it really hard to believe that Boston will finish the playoff with 0 - 9 road record

Don't struggle to believe it.

Playoff intensity + consequences of Big-3 reg. season overuse = shitty form at venues where they get no energy from the crowd. This is not the reg. season, do not refer to their regular season results to support any belief about them "surely not going winless on the road" in the playoffs.

In the reg. season they beat ATL in ATL by 10 pts.
In the post season they lost to ATL in ATL by 9, 5 & 3 pts.

In the reg. season they lost to CLE in CLE by 5 pts & 1 pt.
In the post season they lost to CLE in CLE by 24, 11 & 5 pts.

The ATL results reveal 19, 15 & 13 pt point swings.
The CLE results reveal 23-19, 10-6 & 4-0 pt point swings.

Technically, they have failed everytime to replicate a reg. season road result in the post season vs the same opponent, since when they lost by 5 pts to CLE in the reg. season it was only after having forced the game into OT (something they obviously didnt manage in the equivalent playoff game).
The average point swing away from their reg. season results is 12.1 pts.
They beat Detroit by 7 in Detroit in the reg. season: a 12.1 pt swing away from that result is a Detroit win by 5.1 pts on average (which isn't factoring in the reality that the Celts will have had to play 16 p.s. games before they play their first game in Detroit, a fact that acts as even further inertia regarding their Big-3 (which by now should really be referred to as the Big-2 since Ray A. is already Raywol) putting in big performances).

Detroit got stung by Philly and showed what happens when they get in the zone and turn it on. 3 straight wins by 17, 23 & 18 pts, bookended by a road win of 9 pts (after being down at the half significantly) and a home win by 7 points (showing the signs of a come down off the heights of the 4 prior results). I haven't seen any other team put in 5 straight efforts of that calibre this post season.
The injury to Billups halted their momentum, but that was 10 days ago now, and he's still got a further 6 more days before game 3 in Detroit....

May 17, 2008
Chauncey Billups is still expected to play in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals, according to the Detroit Free Press. He is nursing a hamstring ailment, but went full speed during Friday's practice, and Coach Flip Saunders remarked, "He's actually worked harder today than he's worked even when he's real healthy."

...Boston won't be having the luxury of an injured Billups to help their road woes out.

I think it's highly likely Boston exit the post season without a road win, unless Detroit goes up 2-0 after the first 2 games (which I think in the realms of possibility, if Billups hits the floor ready to go from the 1st minute), and get lax (as is their want) in 1 of their subsequent 2 home games

I really don't think this is an overuse issue. Ray Allen, Paul Pierce, and Kevin Garnett ALL averaged career lows in minutes/game. And they all got more than enough rest down the stretch. People assume they were overused because they won so many games, but the numbers do not support that statement.

You can't go just by the regular season. They were getting overused in pre-season.

Great thread btw everyone.

in 7 preseason games KG averaged 23 minutes, Ray Allen averaged 27, and Paul Pierce 23. That might be a bit above average (i have no idea) but that can't possibly be enough to explain fatigue right now. I just think the overused theory is not the problem.

People are acting like the Celtics have already lost. I have no idea how they went 7 with Atlanta, but BEATING Cleveland in a series isn't an easy task (ask Detroit).

This may be wishful thinking, but i think Ray finds his stroke this series. People keep saying "oh wally was covering him, he should score easily blah blah", but if you really watched the series, the cavs were doubling him A LOT. Ray didn't get doubled too much in the regular season, but he just kept passing out of it like he should this series. He only averaged 9 fg a game down from 14 in the regular season. I think he felt like he had to do SOME scoring so he ended up forcing some bad shots. I don't think Detroit will attack Ray like the Cavs did.

should be a good series, will likely go all 7 again.

I agree w/ slug...I don't think it's necessarily overuse..

It's seemed to me to be a combination of inconsistency (Allen/Rondo/Posey) , complacency (KG/The Truth), and inexperience (Rondo/Doc) on the road in the playoffs that's hurt them..

Slug, not saying they were used huge in preseason but much more than most teams stars.

This has been a subject all year, about how they could tire by the playoffs.

The blessing in the Boston season was KG getting hurt.

there was an article mid season about how if Jesus had stayed in Seattle the doctors were going keep him out of the second game of back to backs to rest his ankles since they couldn't handle the stress. but once he came to boston, it kinda fell off the table.

just googled it, came up with this:

http://www.celticsblog.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=2319&Itemid=254

Nearly 10 months after undergoing double-ankle surgery to remove bone spurs and scar tissue last April - and seven months after proclaiming the ankles "perfect" following his draft night trade from Seattle to Boston - Allen revealed that the road back to full health has been a lot longer and more painful than the 32-year-old ever admitted.
"When I left (Seattle) the doctor there told me that he didn't want me to go to training camp and he didn't want me to play back-to-back (nights) starting the season off," Allen said. "The team had a relationship with the trainers, and the doctor, so they knew what the prognosis was - that I would have to ease into it.
"But then when I was traded, with all the excitement and everything that I was doing, I just came here getting ready to play a season. There was no way I was going to come in and say, 'I can't play. I am not going to training camp.' And then, 'I'm not playing back-to-backs.' I was just going to take it day-by-day and see how I felt."
For the most part, Allen felt reasonably well - at least, well enough to keep practicing and playing. But watching one of the more prolific scorers in NBA history struggle with his shot virtually all season, there was lingering concern that it was more than just a prolonged slump.
Allen was well aware of the cause.
"I just didn't want to talk about it," he said. "I knew it was going to be an issue, so I didn't want to bring it up."

I wouldn't be surprised if the series ends up being a pick 'em. Lots of money lining up on detroit hoping that hey will be viewed as sharp money - DET is the square play of this round...

Just based on the way the first three meetings went I'm thinking home court is worth less in this matchup than any other matchup so far in the playoffs. Won't be surprised at all with 2 of the first 4 games going to the road team.

2) Celts just beat the same Cavs team that knocked Detroit out last yr. I wouldn't say it was luck, as the games were played, and Boston won, plain and simple. The Cavs are arguably better this yr than last yr (the staff thought so when making the trade)

2. no

3. Ray Allen aint shit when guarded by either Rip or Tay

4. Regular season aint shit. and to even say that Rondo has any chance of playing better than Billups is laughable.

5. Detroit rust? how bout well needed rest in order to play 100% in the hopes of stealing 1 of 2 in Boston. You can't seriously use the fact that Boston played 2 7 game series as an advantage to stay "un-rusted".

to me it seems that Detroit is the only team that's been to the ECF 6 years in a row. Boston isnt' ready for what Dtown is bringing to the floor and it will show in the series.

Exactly.

I really don't see how Celtics fans just ignore the fact that their team was 31-10 on the road in the regular season, and is now 0-6 ATS and SU on the road after 6 games.

Note the opposition is Atlanta and Cleveland. Ok a lot of teams are holding their own but two game 7s needed to advance over Atlanta and Cleveland?

if they win I'll be here to shake your hands. But I just don't see it.

Its not being ignored. Its not good they haven't won on the road. Don't ignore the fact that no one has beat Boston at Home and they have home court advantage. Becuase they haven't won on the road doesn't mean they aren't gonna win on the road. They are very capable of winning at detroit.

You say the regular season doesn't mean shit. If you watched those games between Det and Bos in the regular season, you'd have seen it was a playoff type atmosphere in all 3 games and boston prevailed although they did get 2 home games.

i think boston takes em in 7...detroit will have no answer for Pierce and celtics will outrebound stons almost every game...detroit will lose at least 1 game at home...its a given.

hope im wrong

As much as it hurts me to write this--mainly because these bums have cost me sooooo much money this year--detroit in 6...

Ick...

sorry man but every angle you use you're stretching it so it looks better for Boston, than it really is.

By no means am I saying the Pistons will "surely advance". I'm not. What I am saying is, your team has regressed big time since regular season has ended. They are going through motions, they needed adjustments, they needed guys stepping up big only to get here.

You're saying like 8-0 at home over Atlanta and Cleveland is something to be really proud of. Yeah great, they did it, they can beat Detroit in Motown but to me, Boston didn't leave a good impression. Not just because both series needed 7 games.

Their game wasn't there on the road, in most cases. Honestly, I don't see a team from the remaining four with a less impressive path to the CF.

But you know what, they can step up now and shut all our mouths right here.

We'll see. :shake:
