Luka to the Lakers (WTF) + Trade Deadline

Not sure why Cuban is being raised in this discussion. He used to drive everything but for the last 15 months or so he's been a fan and that's about it. Was probably on his treadmill when Charania broke the news.

Doncic is obviously a transcendent talent but basketball and good times are 50 / 50 with him. Always have been. Always will be. Ask any bar manager on Greenville Avenue. He's been able to get away with it but that eventually catches up to you at some point. It is. Pretty young dude by league standards but the flags are there - the calves, knee, who knows what's next with an overweight person playing the most demanding sport in the world. Mavericks looked at a $350MM investment in a tire losing some of its tread by the day. What's it going to be like in another 30,000 miles? Who knows.

Not justifying or supporting but there's a lot going into the mix. Nico Harrison's track record thus far has been pretty stellar. Easy to shit on him but I guess we need to see how it plays out. Now, it looks like an unbridled clusterfuck. As with anything else in these seismic moves, it's best we wait two or three years and then bump this thread and revisit.

All fair enough.

And, he targeted AD specifically.

This is champ or bust this year and next with this team for him.

I still don't understand why he didn't get back more from even the Lakers?

Agree with everything…except none of that explains why they wouldn’t have even shopped him around to get the best return if that was their thought process on Luka. They could have easily received a king’s ransom for Luka…and they ended up with the oft-injured AD and a 1st round pick 4 years from now.

I would have demanded that top young prospect Bronny something or whatever.

Yes, very valid point. Gets back to the closeness of the Pelinka and Harrison relationship. Not always best to simply and do business with the person you know best. There's comfort. But there's also value.

My fault for a Cuban coming up. I don’t follow the NBA that closely…

Are you just trying to be contrarian in this thread? When these two teams played a month ago, Kyrie and Luka were both out and the Mavs lost the game by 12. Today, they were down 50-19 after a quarter.
Not at all i just don't think you have done your research or maybe don't know too much about the NBA. Dallas was also without Lively and PJ Washington on Jan 3rd. In the last game between the two you're speaking of Dallas had just 2 of the same starters as they started today. They were also 13 players deep in their last game, today 10. Also a team just lost their franchise player.

Yeah you’d think this deal would involve the 2 stars swapping and getting back maybe 2-3 firsts and multiple pick swaps

It's tough spot to negotiate, if you want both to get rid of Luka and the only guy you want in return is AD. It's pretty bad starting point. If this really was the case and Pelinka managed to read that, I'm surprised Lakers and not Mavs gave up a first round draft pick ;)
I respect his position and we will see how it plays out. Harrison put his job on the line no doubt.

Bob's take.... remember he worked for the Mavs for a bit...

Because I don't know where Luka gets his bad rep. It's not Dwight Howard that smiled all game because he didn't care and didn't have that killer instinct. Luka is a killer. Even as 16 years old starter, playing with and against guys that are 35+ years old, more than twice his age, he always had that.
I think players like him and Jokic, that not pushing up the ball, but rather slow play it, age nicely and I'm sure Luka will treat his body right at some point.
I always liked his attitude and approach to the game, but yes, starting playing such big minutes on such big stages at such young age, takes something from you - but he will find his balance.

The fans are going to force Dallas ownership into firing this GM. I really doubt this guy realizes how hated he is by the fans there.

You are the expert on hating front office personnel, so I believe you completely. I also see posts from Dallas fans saying that they renounce their fandom, want to boycott the team, etc. The shock and sense of betrayal are intense

I think the players feel it too. Giving up 90+ points in a half is crazy. They’re upset. I wonder how that feeds into how they treat AD as their teammate. He‘s the guy who is replacing their franchise player who just took them to the Finals

As one that has just recently boycotted a team I totally get it.

The crazy thing about this deal is the GM only offered Luka to the Lakers and no one else. If they were hellbent on trading him why not auction him off instead of deciding Anthony Davis was the only player worth receiving in return.

His focus was AD, reportedly.

Yeah but thats a stupid way of doing business. When you have a coveted asset and decide to move on you auction that asset and get the best return possible.
No, to his defense - he wanted AD - for him this was the best possible return. Could he got more from Lakers or some third team? I have no idea, but if Pelinka read his hand and knew that AD is the goal - no way he should have even given the draft pick...

You don't accept a lesser player that is 7 years older for one of the best players in the league. There is just no excusing Dallas for making this deal and its going to cause the GM his job because the fans are not going to get over it.
