Yeah I don't really know how either of them could accomplish any of this on a torn ACL which means they could be destined for a reconnection in a few years
Gunner sent me something about a sports doc who said as much as her ACL has been torn it's possible not giving much resistance at this point which I guess could be a thing (or something along those lines). I'm not really sure how you could actually research that without having a world class skier to perform that study on though. Downhill is crazy enough, imagine doing Super G now too

Crazy she crashed yet US won gold
Breezy Johnson crashed out on this course in 2022 on the WC circuit and missed the Olympics but took gold today for redemption
Crazy how sport works, she's only the 2nd American to ever win gold in women's downhill other than Lindsey obviously

It was her real chance though. Downhill really is the event that puts the least amount of effort on your lateral movement. She was gonna do Super G and any type of slalom sounds insane to me even without any knee injuries at 41 ys old

Winter Olympics needs to have multiple stars created before they happen in the US, just how it is and they didn't do that. Pretty poor planning to not do behind the scenes work to swap out the SB for a different year than an Olympic year too.
Now the Savannah thing, NBC is all over the place for the wrong reasons
I'm not even sure if NBCSports is still a channel on cable anywhere. USA absorbed it here and obviously Peacock has taken over most of that...just an odd year for them without the human drama going on created by having the Super Bowl and the Winter Olympics at the same time.

I think it was dumb. Don't coaches have the authority anymore? Her fame caused this inability to say no to her. Someone should have. You can't win an Olympic downhill with a torn acl. She's lucky she didn't break her neck trying to ski 70mph downhill on 1 leg. There's being a competitor and then just insane stupid. I like her alot. She's had success. So there was no reason for this at all imo. Just TV ratings.
I agree. Big difference between being dumb and realistic. Someone else should have gotten her place. I don't feel sorry for her at all.
her training runs had her at speeds where she could have medaled. As Tahoe mentioned - anyone doing downhill is completely insane as it is. That is not something most humans are capable of doing at a mental level, let alone a physical one.

Except I don’t like her at all…I think she’s a shallow and arrogant egomaniac who loves to get attention, positive or negative.
So fucking dumb to try the shit she did today, she’s lucky she’s alive.
Hope she heals up and then goes TF away. Maybe she can go back to being one of Tiger’s bitches…at least that will keep her in the limelight she craves so badly

I admire her courage, but when she decided to race with the injury, memories came back.
My second wife blew her knee while we were playing co-ed softball.
Her knee was lockd. No bendy.
When the doc gave us the news after surgery, she blew her ACL.
Being a teaching moment, the doc gave us the VHS(blast fromt he past).
He said in the vid, "she came to me with a locked knee."
He then pulled the ACL with a probe(?) and showed the ligament flop over into the joint.
Assessing that must have been how it locked.
He then had someone call his wife to tell her he'd be late and ordered pizza for the OR.

I see why people disagree with Vonn's decision to race. From an objective standpoint it makes no sense. But any person who dedicates their life to being an athlete and trying to master a sport doesn't see it from an objective standpoint. That's why every NFL retired player, no matter how badly they are beat up, says they would do it again if they had a chance.
You have to be obsessed to master a sport and even then you may never make it. There's an excellent documentary about Vonn shot years ago when she was on top. Her workout routine is so hard only an obsessed person could stick with it. She gets up at 4 am and does an intense indoor workout, and that's the easy part. She then goes out while it's still dark, in freezing weather, so cold the snow is crunching as she walks on it, and is on the top of the mountain before the sun comes out. Getting up in the dark is bad enough, but doing it and then going out in freezing winter while it's still dark is a nightmare to me. But I understand why anyone who went through that for decades insisted on racing and why she says she doesn't regret it.
That's a bad, bad injury though. It has to be a spiral fracture to require multiple operations and those are murder to go through. She's still bedridden and will be for some time. She has more operations to go through when she gets back to the USA. And that space-age brace or cast she's wearing is something only car wreck victims usually require.
The only way you get a spiral fracture is if your bindings fail to release and bindings have been so well engineered over they years they almost NEVER fail to release. Makes me wonder if she set the bindings so tight they wouldn't come off to try and compensate for the knee and it wound up costing her big time.
