No, Kansas State isn’t a junior college; it only seems that way.

After a stunning down-the-stretch collapse losing five of their final six games to blow a nice 4-2 start, highlighted by a win over Texas, the Wildcats had to do something drastic to try to be in the Big 12 title mix. Mission accomplished.

It’s not like the expectations are the same in Manhattan as they are in Lincoln or Austin, but for a program that grew into a power under Bill Snyder, only to fall flat during the end of his reign, just getting back among the top teams in the North is the goal. If bringing in the ready-made talent doesn’t work, it might be back to square one. The future has been mortgaged to win now.

Eight starters are back on offense, and while only five are back on defense, there's plenty of all-around experience coming back to form a nice base to work around. Added to the mix are a slew of JUCO transfers in this year's recruiting class that completely changed the face of the team.

If you want to change the face of a team, the Wildcats have done it as it's loaded with new ready-made players ready to challenge for starting jobs, like receivers Attrail Snipes and Aubrey Quarles. In all, 19 JUCO transfers were brought in making KSU the biggest wild-card in the crazy Big 12 North.

Combine the influx of young talent with the experience of head coach Ron Prince, who now has two years under his belt and should be far more prepared to keep the team steady. Young coaches almost always make mistakes as they try to learn the ins and outs, especially in a league like the Big 12 with so many veteran coaches. More than anything else, he'll need to use his experience to get his defense to come around.

The numbers were staggering down the stretch. Oklahoma State ran for 329 yards and cranked out 510 yards of total offense. Nebraska threw for 519 yards and seven touchdowns. Missouri put up 427 yards of offense and six touchdowns. Fresno State went for 549 yards and six scores. Nothing was working.

Now there will be major changes after the 3-4 scheme didn't work. Prince has closed off practices, pass rushing terror Ian Campbell will be an end again, instead of a hybrid linebacker/end, and, of course, the JUCO guys will help immensely.

It still might take one more year to fully come together and for the mix of old and new players to blend, but this will be a very, very dangerous team to watch out for.
What to look for on offense: The JUCO transfers, part one. Last year, the offense needed the JUCO players to help boost the line. This season, the new guys will provide more weapons for QB Josh Freeman to work with. Receivers Aubrey Quarles, Brandon Banks, Adrian Hilburn and Attrail Snipes are very fast, very good producers who could instantly take over starting spots. Keithen Valentine was a walk-on this spring who grabbed a second-string running back spot going into the fall. The line gets help from Wade Weibert, a starting left guard, and Edward Prince will work at tackle.

What to look for on defense: The JUCO transfers, part two. The switch back to a 4-3 is the biggest key, at least more of a rotation between the 3-4 and the 4-3, as it should allow Campbell be the Campbell who dominated the Big 12 in 2006, but the big help to improve the dying D will come from the new guys. The new star isn't from the JUCO ranks, but from Virginia. Olu Hall was a big-time recruit for the Cavaliers who should now grow into a major NFL prospect. Hansen Sekona and Ulia Pomele will be major factors at linebacker, Daniel Calvin is a run-clogging tackle, and Dustin Bell is a ball-hawking defensive back.

This team will be much better if … it can keep teams under 250 yards passing. The Wildcats held Auburn to 229 yards through the air and almost pulled off the upset. They were 5-1 in the other games when they held the opponent under 250, and was 1-4 when allowing more.
The Schedule: The team should be better, and it should show right away with a decent start. Playing North Texas, Montana State (which would've been Fresno State if the Wildcats didn't wuss out of the date) and UL Lafayette in September will do that, but there's also a mid-week, nationally televised game at Louisville. The big problem overall is the timing of the open dates. There's one on September 13th, and then it's ten games in ten weeks with a brutal stretch of four road games in a five-week span. The home date in the midst of the road run? Oklahoma, followed up by road trips to Kansas and Missouri. On the plus side, the final two games are at home against Nebraska and Iowa State.
Best Offensive Player: Junior QB Josh Freeman. Thrown to the wolves as a true freshman, he wasn't bad, but he threw too many picks. Last year he grew into the job, and when he had to bomb away to keep up in shootouts, he did. He threw for 200 yards or more in every game but the win over Texas, and he was over 250 yards nine eight times including a 404-yard, three touchdown performance in the loss to Oklahoma State.
Best Defensive Player: Senior DE Ian Campbell. The Big 12's new superstars after an 11.5 sack 2006 season, and then he was moved into a linebacker/end in the 3-4 scheme. While he had more space to move, it also allowed more blockers to get to him and prevent him from getting into the backfield on a regular basis. Now he'll be back with his hand on the ground where he'll be too quick off the ball for most tackles.
Key player to a successful season: Junior RB Leon Patton ... if he's on the team. He was convicted of misdemeanor theft after swiping two video games. There are options if Patton isn't back, but assuming he is, he needs to be the star of the running game that last 1,106-yard, 12-touchdown back James Johnson. In a perfect world, the Wildcats have more offensive balance, but at 5-7 and 187 pounds, he might not be a workhorse. He's a speed back who makes things happen when he gets the ball in space, and if he can crank out at least 15 quality touches per game, the offense will be far better.
The season will be a success if ... the Wildcats get to a bowl game ... and winning it. That might not seem like a major goal, but considering how strong the Big 12 is, and with Texas Tech and Oklahoma to play from the South, getting to the post-season would be a good bounce-back year. Winning the game will be vital, too, considering the Cats lost their last two post-season games and haven't won one since 2002. The team has won 18 games against D-I/FBS teams over the past four years and have had one winning season in the last four. Getting above .500 is a must.

When Bobby Petrino left Louisville following the 2006 campaign, he apparently took more than his family and his personal belongings to Atlanta. He also took off with the Cardinals’ momentum and national image.

Louisville flopped in 2007, Steve Kragthorpe’s first year on the job, going from defending Big East champ to a 6-6 record and a bowl-less postseason for the first time in a decade. The blame for the debacle fell squarely on the coaching staff, some of whom are no longer with the program. For Kragthorpe, a darling of athletic directors just one year ago, the honeymoon is already over.
If Kragthorpe is going to restore the order at Louisville and stabilize his own job security, he’ll have to do so with new troops everywhere. Gone from a year ago are star QB Brian Brohm, leading rusher Anthony Allen, the top four receivers, and all three starting linebackers. DE Peanut Whitehead, one of the most heralded recruits to ever attend the school, suffered a career-ending spinal injury in November. Starting CB Rod Council was booted from the team after being charged with armed robbery in February. And that’s just from the player personnel files.

The defensive staff also got whacked in response to last year’s collapse, hiring four new assistants, including former Michigan coach Ron English to coordinate the defense. All English is being asked to do is energize a depleted group that couldn’t tackle or get to the quarterback, and was miserable against teams like Middle Tennessee and Syracuse. There’s a feeling that Louisville will always find a way to score, no matter who’s at the controls, but if the defense doesn’t improve by leaps and bounds, it’ll be another also ran year.

Now the question is whether or not the Cardinals have gotten as low as they can go, or if thing can get worse in an improved Big East. With wholesale changes impacting every area of the program, the Cardinals are capable of another clunker. Winning the Big East and the Orange Bowl just two years ago raised the bar a few notches, and now the pressure is on Kragthorpe to stop the bleeding now before it becomes a hemorrhage.
What to watch for on offense: Sophomore RB Bilal Powell. The veteran line can run block. The backfield has been depleted by transfers, suspensions, and relocations. In other words, Powell is about to see a dramatic spike in his production. Sure, he’ll share touches with Brock Bolen, but there’ll be enough work to keep everyone happy. When the season was spinning out of control last November, Powell provided an unexpected spark, running with intensity and a blend of speed and power that gave a glimmer of hope about the future. The future is now for one of Louisville’s most exciting offensive weapons.

What to watch for on defense: The linebackers. On a defense filled with concerns, this is Kragthorpe’s biggest heading into the season. Not only have last year’s three starters left the program, but many of this year’s key replacements spent the spring sidelined with an injury. A lot will be expected from senior James Bryant, a hard-hitting import from Miami, and Chris Campa, a junior college transfer who’s trying to get right after undergoing surgery on a torn labrum in his shoulder.

The team will be far better if… new coordinator Ron English can get the defense to overachieve. Louisville has never wanted for quality athletes, but it’ll be up to English and his rookie assistants to get this group to play with better overall fundamentals. There were too many blown assignments and missed tackles last season, which will be unacceptable on a unit that has so many holes to fill at linebacker and in the secondary. Players, such as CB Woodny Turenne and LB James Bryant, a Miami transfer, have upside. English’s objective is to be sure they reach it.

The Schedule: You want a bounce-back season Cardinal fans? You have the schedule to do it. There are only four road games and two are against Memphis and Syracuse. The other two will be tough, but playing at Pitt and Rutgers isn't like going to West Virginia or South Florida. Non-conference games against Kentucky and Kansas State might be tough, but those both come at home. If things weren't easy enough, there's a week off at the end of November before facing the Scarlet Knights. It would've been nice to get the break before facing West Virginia, but there's an extra day off before facing the Mountaineers.Best offensive player: Senior C Eric Wood. Now that all of the skill position talent is seeking jobs in the NFL, Wood may actually start getting more of the national recognition he deserves. The reigning First Team All-Big East center has started 37 consecutive games dating back to his freshman year and is the leader of the Cardinal offensive line. Lightning quick on the snap and strong enough to move defensive tackles off the ball, he’ll be on the Rimington Trophy short list for the third straight year.
Best defensive player: Senior DT Earl Heyman. It would be easy to lump every Cardinal into last year’s defensive mess, but that would do a disservice to Heyman, a tackle with next-level skills. At 6-3 and 285 pounds, he has got the quickness of an end, a major concern for most guards and centers. Heyman laid the foundation for a breakthrough senior year notching 40 tackles, seven tackles for loss, four sacks, and three fumble recoveries.
Key player to a successful season: Senior QB Hunter Cantwell. While the defense won’t be transformed overnight, the offense still has a chance to keep Louisville competitive in most games. Cantwell has been well hidden in Brian Brohm’s shadow, but he’s a 6-5, 236-pound veteran with a rocket arm and 18 games of experience. If the senior is able to keep his own defense off the field while elevating the play of the young kids around him, the Cardinals won’t be out of many games.
The season will be a success if ... Louisville wins seven games. Although the Cards might appear shockingly far from being back in the Big East title hunt, they schedule is conducive to a winning season. Eight games are at Papa John’s, and the first troubling road trip doesn’t happen until a Nov. 8 visit to Pittsburgh. The keys for Kragthorpe are to get beyond last season and create something positive early on. Seven wins and a December bowl game will accomplish both

Game is circled (or has to be) for KSU as their non-conf statement prior to Big XII. I mean, c'mon, North Texas, Montana St, ULL, and....L-ville.

Their big non-conf. Only BCS team in the non-conf.

KSU is currently third in the nation in RYPG behind Navy and AFA. That's impressive. Average will go down against L-ville, but by how much (they are averaging over 200 RYPG).

K State seems like a sleeping beast to me this year... but haven't looked at this game much.

Weather looks to be perfect... no rain, clear and low winds

Love K-State here. First midweek game since 1994 and they have to be pumped about that. Also K-State does well off of a bye, 12-4 straight up since 1991. They have the advantage all around almost imo, Cantwell should be good for 2 picks at least.

It's hard not to like K-State early, but what the fuck do I know...I loved Rutgers the other night

Defensive shake-up
Defense is good, but Prince wants it to be great

Kansas State’s Gary Chandler makes a tackle on a Montana State running back last Saturday at Bill Snyder Family Stadium. Wildcats’ head coach Ron Prince said the defense is good, but he wants great. The Wildcats return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Louisville.</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>
The running game is iffy on offense, the linebacker play, coach Ron Prince says, needs to be better on defense.
Those are the two areas of concern as Kansas State prepares for Wednesday's 7 p.m. game at Louisville.
Prince says that it's not a ghastly situation on defense, but, "It is just that this is a linebacker-driven defense. It is intended to be very disciplined, but also have it create some opportunities."

At Monday's weekly press conference, Prince was asked if there might be lineup changes?
He answered, "If we need to move people, we will, but it's not something we are set on right now."
That was on Monday.
When the depth chart for the Louisville game was released Thursday, there was indeed a shuffling to the depth chart at linebacker and defensive end.
Olu Hall and Antwon Moore remain fixtures outside, and Ulla Pomele at one inside spot, but replacing Reggie Walker at the second inside starting spot will be junior Hanson Sekona, a 6-foot, 230-pound transfer from College of San Mateo.
Through two starts, Sekona has yet to register a tackle on defense, but Prince has praised his special team efforts.
Moving behind Sekona is 5-11, 230-pound redshirt-freshman Alex Hrebec, while Walker has been moved from inside to outside linebacker behind Moore.
In yet another change, true-freshman Brandon Harold will now start opposite Ian Campbell at defensive end. Eric Childs, who started the first two games, is now listed behind Campbell, while Raphael Guidry is playing behind Harold.
In the Montana State game, the massive 6-6, 264-pound Harold was second in tackles with six, which included three for negative yards.
"I could tell when he came in, that he was going to be able to contribute," said Campbell of Harold, a native of East St. Louis, Ill. "He has the size, the speed and has the overall frame to be a defensive end."
But more than that, Campbell is impressed with Harold's attitude.
"I think he has come in and sponged everything. He writes things down. He asks me why I gave myself a zero on a play when all I did wrong was footwork," Campbell said. "He thinks that through. It's not about just being in the right gap, it's about footwork, right leverage and trying to get to the ball every play."
While somewhat satisfied that K-State has given up only two touchdowns and 16 total points in the Wildcats' 2-0 start against North Texas and Montana State, film study has also defined other areas where better play is possible.
* There have been 10 plays where K-State stuffed the play for zero yards.
"With a little better focus, those could have all been tackles for minus yards," Prince said.
* There have been five plays where the Wildcats allowed one yard.
"With a little more attention to detail, those could have been tackles for a loss," Prince said.
He added, "We know that the game is literally a game of inches, so if we face a really confirmed offensive line and running attack, we could be in really big trouble. We need to make sure we are tightening down all the details."
Through two starts, K-State has allowed 94 rushing yards per game. Teams are averaging only three yards per carry, and have yet to score a rushing touchdown.
Through the air, passes are being completed at a 52 percent clip for 104 yards per game. Teams are averaging just 3.5 yards per completion, well below the desired eight-plus yards per attempt.
All are numbers that say the defense is sound, but to Prince, not perfect.
"What we are finding is that we are in position to make some plays. We just need to be as aggressive towards making those plays as we can," Prince said. "This is not an issue of not being in position to make the play, we just need to make them. Hitting on the runs, being precise and making tackles is what we are looking for."
The message has been sent, and heard.
As Campbell said, "Guys are there and they are ready to make the plays. They just need to wrap up, not let go of the ball carrier, and drive them to the ground. With all the fundamentals we work on all the time, it's a matter of a collected group of individuals doing what they are told. Right now, it is not being done by enough people."

Freeman's efficiency is vastly improved this season

Mark Janssen
Senior Sports Writer
In 1998, Kansas State quarterback Michael Bishop had a school-record passing efficiency rating of 159.6.
Two games into the 2008 season, admittedly against teams nowhere close to Big 12-like, Josh Freeman's QB rating is 209.3.
For the year, Freeman's pass-and-catch numbers are 34-of-45 for 520 yards, five touchdowns and no interceptions.

Email.gif

How, you ask, does one come up with 209.3 out of those basic two-game numbers?
Grab a pencil jot this stuff down.
A pass-efficiency rating comes by: multiply a passer's yards per attempt by 8.4; add the number obtained by multiplying pass completions per attempt by 100; add the number obtained by multiplying touchdowns per attempt by 330; and subtract the number obtained by multiplying interceptions per attempt by 200.
Seriously. That's it.
A year ago, Freeman's rating was 127.26 to rank 68th in the nation. As a true-freshman, his rating was 103.45. In each year, interceptions — 15 in 2006 and 11 in 2007 — kept his efficiency rating down.
Through two games, Freeman says, "I'm just trying to be efficient. With that being the goal, we're doing a good job of throwing and catching it."
He would add, "We're doing what it takes to win."
Two other numbers not specifically mentioned in Freeman's game are a 75 percent completion rate and an 11.5-yard per passing attempt average.
Quarterback coach Warren Ruggiero says he'd be satisfied with 65 percent accuracy and 8.5 yards per attempt.
Head coach Ron Prince adds, "I think anytime you have a quarterback in the 70-percent range, you are dealing with a terrific quarterback and system."
Prince credits Freeman's snaps within the system as being the primary reason for the growth.
As a true-freshman who plays, Prince said that the competition, going to class, and "other functions" of a college freshman are already a full plate for an 18-year-old.
"If a player sits for a couple years, then he could have a couple of those things ready when he plays, but those who come and perform and have to win for you right now, the last thing you want them to do is thinking too much on the field," Prince said. "You want them to just go out there and play as fast as they can."
Prince went on to praise Freeman's "... aptitude for the game, and he's obviously got a terrific body and lots of tools. Now, we want him to use every single one of them that he as."
The latest of those are his feet as Freeman has 10 rushes to his credit for 58 yards and four touchdowns. While Freeman's rushes in the past have been scrambles, this year's totes have been by design.
"It's been cool scoring touchdowns, but I just want to win," Freeman said of the new dimension to his game. "This is stuff that's been in the playbook all along, but just hasn't been used. Now it's being called."
Prince said he didn't know whether his QB's handful of runs per game would enhance his 6-foot-5, 250-pounder's draft value, but he did say, "This is a player who has worked very hard to make his game versatile. I think he will help us win games in that manner."
As good of a job that Freeman has been doing, that — "help us win games" — is where the now 20-year-old signal caller says he needs to improve. He was 4-4 as a freshman starter, and 5-7 last year. Added to this year's 2-0 mark and Freeman has only an 11-11 record.
"There are plays in games at key times, whether that's on third down or in the red zone, that I need to make for us to win," Freeman said.
Freeman was talking of the 10-plus games to come, because so far the Wildcats have a 56 percent completion rate on third-down plays, and have scored on 15 of 16 possessions he has quarterbacked.
As for leadership, Prince compared Freeman's style to that of Jordy Nelson last year.
"Chewing someone's butt is not his style, but he pulls someone aside and explains what needs to be done," Prince said. "That builds a better chemistry."
While leadership isn't figured into the "passing efficiency formula," it does have a line in Prince's "quarterback efficiency formula."
With satisfaction, Prince said of Freeman's game, "He is a young man that has really progressed. No one has done it under a microscope like he has."

I don't think they'll hold back on abandoning the run meaning KSu and we all know Louisville struggles to run the ball with no emerging back.

Wildcats lack effective ground game

Kansas State’s Logan Dold carries the ball for a touchdown against Montana State on Saturday at Bill Snyder Family Stadium.</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>
Ron Prince said he didn't want to sound negative.
But simply stated, the Kansas State coach said, "We're not running the football like I would like. There's a higher standard to be held to."
True, Kansas State gained 165 rushing yards against North Texas in the opener, and another 177 in Saturday's 69-10 victory over Montana State. But, "It was the second game in, and we looked like it," Prince said. "I expect to be better than this, and we'll work hard to make it happen."

In the opener, K-State rushed for 126 yards with the majority of starters on the field for two-plus quarters.
Saturday, the Wildcats rushed for 117 yards through three quarters before adding another 60 in the mop-up fourth quarter. Of those first 117 yards, 44 came on a reverse by wide receiver Deon Murphy, leaving the rest of the team netting 73 yards on 28 carries.
Prince hinted to some "technique problems," with the Wildcat players adding little to that.
"We need to do better, and we expect to," said starting running back Keithen Valentine, who rushed for 65 yards in the opener, but only 39 on 12 carries Saturday. "It's all fixable."
In fact, going into the fourth quarter against the Bobcats, KSU's leading rushers were Murphy on his reverse, and quarterback Josh Freeman running five times for 35 yards.
"It wasn't a great performance," Prince said of the rush game. "We're not going to kid ourselves."
Of his new role as a runner, Freeman, who has rushed for four TDs, said, "I just want to score and win."
Prince said it was the next step his junior's game.
"It takes time for a quarterback to develop, and he's had to learn in games," Prince said, referring to Freeman starting as a true-freshman and second-year sophomore. "We feel like he's a pretty fully developed quarterback and can do different things from a mental and physical standpoint. I think he's excited to contribute in every way he can."
What Prince said he was looking for was more consistency on offense, and a demonstration that Kansas State can produce on "... play, after play, after play, after play. That's what really good teams do."
Overall, Prince said, "I'm not ready to anoint any part of our team. We're fighting and scratching to improve."
Freeman added, "It's great to be 2-0, but we have work to do."

Herndon named
National Player of the Week
K-State defensive back Courtney Herndon has been named the Walter Camp Football Foundation National Defensive Player of the Week after his stellar performance against Montana State.
Herndon, a Dallas, Texas, native, returned a fumble 43 yards for a touchdown, blocked a punt that was recovered for another touchdown, intercepted a pass and returned it 26 yards to set up another K-State TD and recorded four total tackles, one of which went for a loss.

Not looking forward to the film
Deon Murphy looked to be off to the races on a long-distant touchdown Saturday, but was tackled at the 15-yard-line after a 70-yard reception from Freeman.
A bit disgusted with himself, Murphy said, "I set myself up to get caught on that one. I should have kept running, but I set myself up for the tackle when I tried to stutter step him. It'll look crazy on film, but hey, we got the win."

great stuff! leaning towards Kansas State at the moment, they seem to have a stiff defense that could hold Louisville weak front to FG's

I think the line is also perfect for 50/50 plays on both sides! I hope KState goes down to 3

Freeman has the tools but is not a top notch QB just yet. Prince has to win this game as the folks in Manhatten were questioning his hire.

He poured it on against two outmatched foes so far. He will do it again if he can to save his butt. He knoiws the rest of the Big XII is gonna be tough to catch a win.

Can KSU pour it on Lewivull on the road?

Yes.

^sportsbook.com shows 90/10 on kstate on both spread and moneylines...may not be as reliable because of sample size, but it usually coincides pretty closely with insights...

When I posted this play I had no idea how many were going to like K State. I actually thought I was going to be in the minority. This is disturbing.

the ville. they are always tough at papa johns and k state has not been tested this year as far as i'm concerned. i also like the man against man matchups on the o and d lines. k state is 0 - 7 last 7 as a road favorite for trend people. if cantwell and the can find consistency they have a shot at a win imo.

Stud C Eric Wood for Ville listed as doubtful

O-State, did this just happen today? Link? I'm not finding it at any of my sites.

Head Coach Ron Prince
Opening Statement...
“They (Louisville) are still really good and we are not really sure if we are. Their offensive line, the more you watch them, the more impressive they get. I think they have two of the better offensive linemen in college football. Their center is a really good player. He and Jeff Byers, the center from USC, are some of the best out there. He has had 37 starts and you don’t see anything on the tape that makes you think anything different. We thought he was good in 2006 and he still is – he has been there for a long time. The left tackle is a good player.
“These guys play the game the way it is supposed to be played. They are big and strong, they know what they are doing and they are committed to running the football. They have a good complement with their fullbacks and tight ends. Their running back, No. 20 (Victory Anderson), isn’t always noted as the starter, but is their feature back. I think he is really dynamic and will be a very dangerous player. I have asked around and people tell me this quarterback is very highly regarded out side the college football world. He has an unbelievable release and he can put the ball down the field. If the release looks a little bit different to people, all you have to do is look at Philip Rivers. That’s who he reminds me of, a quarterback that I have played against in my past who can throw the ball like him. They are very much set on how they want to attack you on defense with their offense.
“Defensively, nothing has really changed. The more tape I look at, the more impressed I am with their defensive attack. No. 94 (Adrian Grady) is a really good player no matter what league he is playing in. He doesn’t have some of the household appeal that some of the other guys have because he had some injuries last season. They have a lot of veteran guys in the secondary. I think that one of the biggest x-factors in the game is their returner and wide receiver, No. 3 (Trent Guy). He had a touchdown as a returner a year ago against Kentucky. He has really been a game-changer and has been able to affect momentum at times.”
On K-State...
“I felt like we have accomplished some things in our practices, particularly on defense. In the kicking game, we have focused on some things that have been giving us some issues – none of them are because people are playing poorly, but we just felt that the guys were competing for playing time and we want to promote as much of that as we can.”
On Louisville’s rush defense...
“When you’re not allowing people to run the football in the interior at all because of those two (defensive linemen), the secondary – particularly the safeties, corners and outside linebackers – understand that the game is coming to them. They are very coordinated to do a good job on the edge with how they want to defend the run. Most people look at the running game and realize you have to be able to run the ball inside at some point. No matter what games you look at, you don’t really see that. I think the bulk of many teams’ yards so far have come from trying to attack the interior and then moving outside, and I don’t think that is the case because of their two big defensive tackles.”
On improvements on the running game...
“The reality is we won’t know until we get there if we have improved in that area or not. I think the game will be a great test for us in that aspect and I think we will find out a lot of things about our team after the game. But, we will find out about the running game when we get there. I think it will be a great test for us.”
On running the ball...
“I think in all games you have to be able to run to win. I think there comes a time and place in every single game that you have to be able to run the ball and when you do it you have to be able to run effectively. If you go out there and have a poor rushing performance that confirms to the other team how they might want to play. You have to have something positive occur and have it happen early if you can. They are very committed to their running game and that’s why they have had very good passing numbers, particularly last year, because so much of what they do comes off of play action. If you can’t establish any kind of running game at all, then that eliminates a good portion of your play action game.”

I grabbed o55 when it first came out.

Simply put, KSU will throw early and oftern causing this game to play longer (more plays) than normal. Also, I am not sold on KSU's defense. They struggled to end the year last year and I'm haven't seen much progress even though it is hard to evaluate versus the competition they've played. Everything I read out of KSU talks about poor tackling.

In my opinion there are 2 keys to the game: Louisville's ability to force TO's and KSU's ability to tackle/limit YAC.

When these 2 teams met in 2006 both defenses were solid. Louisville yielded just 16.3 pts/gm and KSU 23.8.

In 2007 Louisville jumped to 31.4 pts/gm and even more staggering is the rushing yrds/gm jumped from 105 to 165. They return just 5 defensive starters.

In 2007 KSU jumped to 30.8 pts/gm. Rushing yds/gm stayed relatively flat but passing yds/gm jumped from 197 to 259. KSU also returns 5 starters.

I am no totals expert so we shall see how this plays out. GL to all.

Been leaning Lousiville since i saw the line open . Kansas State just always one of those teams who never plays up to par on the road unless its a big dog vs a good opponent . So I looked it up and Kansas State is 3-15 away last 3 seasons and 0-5 laying points ..with 1 each year ...2 pt win @ Marshall , win @ Colorado as a FG dog and then last year the flukish win @ Texas....

Just dont see what has changed to expect something from Kansas State off its home field ...

I can't pick a side. THere are pros and cons about each team and each situation, but the fact of the matter is that we don't really know anything about either team.

K-St manhandled TREMENDOUSLY shitty teams, but both scores are misleading as they have D and ST touchdowns in both. Is that a testament to coaching? Or just luck against really shitty players? K-St hasn't played on the road OR TV and this will be their first opportunity for both. They are ready to make a statement. Will they come out tight and trying to force a win?

Louisville has looked terrible. Kentucky isn't a good team, but handled them farily well. Then the Cards roll Tenn Tech, but they AREN'T good, so what do we believe? Those scores seem to be deceptive as well.

In the end, there are a lot of question marks around both teams. Kansas State isn't nearly as good as they have looked. Louisivlle isn't nearly as bad as they have looked. I think the teams are even in talent and coaching (I think Prince is a terrible coach, honestly, and Krag has gone downhill at Lou).

One underlying factor: Kragthorpe is safe. Unless Louisville doesn't win a game, he's got some time to work with. Prince, on the other hands, wants the FUCK outta Manhattan, so he's playing for a job offer at the end of the season.

Great post Mort. The unknown of each team is why I took a shot on the Louisville ML. I figure a home dog in a situation where we don't know anything about either team is worth taking the chance on the increased juice. Good luck if you make a play...on Louisville. Dominate it this weekend bud

Man...I just seem to be picking the two biggest question mark games of the week...FresnoSt -7 and KSU -4 so far this week.

For those of you backing LVille...aren't you at all concerned that they lost their top 4 receivers? If KSU loads the box and says beat us through the air, can LVille do it? In years past, I'd say yes w/out hesitation.

They weren't too tough when they lost 27-2 at home to Kentucky as a 3 pt fave.

Has everyone forgotten this game played just a couple of weeks ago @ Papa John's? Da 'Ville is a program in "transition", to put it kindly, and the Papa John's mystic is DEAD.

IMO, KSU is an improving program that is better than UK (y'all did see UK needed a 10-0 4th Q to slide by MTSU @ home, right?).

Gotta side with the program "on the rise" led by an underrated 3rd year QB...I think many of us are over analyzing this play...:shake:

Mully

Good Points Mull. Freeman will be breaking every KSU passing record this year and the coach/team have confidence in him

What Ive been saying from the get go is that if Freeman is on track early and that can open up the running game this thing has KSU written all over it.

Cats are like 12-0 off the BYE week and play well on national TV.

The ksu receivers speed and athleticism will be the difference as long as Freeman has time in the pocket. Cats by 10-14.

12-4 off a bye since '91 but who's counting. :shake:

And to add what I put in the other thread for this game....

I don't think Papa John's has much of a homefield advantage. Steele rates it a -5, and I just laugh at that. Its so open and airy, and only holds 42k, blah.

They squeaked by MTSU last season, who's o-line was so depleted they were on the 6th string center(not joking), and brought the holder in to play LT.

They lost to Cuse as a 37.5 fav.

They lost the next game to Utah.

Didn't cover against Pitt and the Stache.

Covered by .5 in the finale against Rutgers.

And that was all with "the best QB" going into the season.

If Cantwell continues his Jennie Finch style windup, I can't see how that will fair against a Big 12 D. Sure, it worked against a lower 30 1-AA program in Tennessee Tech, but it'll be a whole other ball game tonight.
