5 Lefties take the mound today

Moore-Rays
Duffy-Royals
Rodriguez-Red Sox
Sabathia-Yankees
Lamb-Reds

Rodriguez vs Sabathia

Eduardo Rodriguez's break from the big leagues lasted a little bit longer than the four days the rest of his Red Sox teammates took earlier this week.Rodriguez will be making his first big league start since June 27 when he and the Red Sox take on CC Sabathia and the Yankees in the Bronx on Saturday. Rodriguez, who is 1-3 with an 8.59 ERA in six MLB starts this season, is back up after making two starts at Triple-A Pawtucket in early July.Over those two starts, Rodriguez allowed two runs, five hits and struck out seven in 10 innings. Saturday will be Rodriguez's fifth time facing the Yankees. The 23-year-old tossed 24 1/3 innings over four starts versus the Yanks last year, allowing seven runs (six earned) with 16 strikeouts and seven walks.

When Sabathia takes the mound Saturday, it will be his 100th career start at the new Yankee Stadium. He enters the milestone day with a 5-6 record and a 3.77 ERA this season, with his stats inflated after a rough stretch over his last four starts. After holding a 2.20 ERA on June 16, Sabathia has allowed 21 earned runs on 30 hits over his last 23 innings.Sabathia hasn't had the happiest time facing the Red Sox in his career. The veteran lefty is 12-12 with a 4.47 ERA in 32 starts versus the Sox. His 4.47 ERA is his highest mark against any American League East rival by almost a full point. With a single in the third inning Friday, Mookie Betts extended his hitting streak to 12 games. He is one of six Red Sox players to have a double-digit hitting streak this season.

Duffy

He has struck out 7 or more in 4 straight outings and hasn't given up more than 3 runs in his last 8 starts.
Duffy, on the other hand, has been a solid piece in the Kansas City rotation since making the move from the Royals' bullpen in mid-May. He has a 3.11 ERA in 11 starts since making the move.
Duffy was one out away from his first career complete game earlier this month when he allowed two runs over 8 2/3 innings in a win against the Phillies.

Moore

Moore has pitched well lately thanks to better command and extra velocity on his fastball. He is 5-2 with a 3.57 ERA in 11 starts at Tropicana Field in '16. He is 0-2 with a 5.27 ERA in two starts vs. the O's despite them hitting just .196 vs. him

7 Lefties going to the mound today

Hamels-Rangers
Price-Red Sox
Conley-Marlins
Happ-Blue Jays
Hill-A's
Montgomery-Mariners
Ray-D'Backs

Hamels

The Texas Rangers left-hander (9-2, 3.21 ERA) makes his first Wrigley Field appearance since pitching a no-hitter against the Chicago Cubs on July 25, 2015.
Hamels struck out 13 and walked two in the Phillies' 5-0 victory.
"Things line up every once in a while in a season and in your career and I just happened to do it at that time," Hamels said before Sunday's 19th start of the season. "It's obviously a memory that everybody on that field and in the dugout will remember. Quite a few Cub fans were applauding, just a fun ordeal."
The no-hitter ended up being Hamels' last appearances with a Phillies organization he spent nearly 10 seasons with.

Price

A little over two months ago, Price allowed six runs, was unable to get through the fifth inning and departed his seventh start with the Boston Red Sox with an unsightly 6.75 ERA.
Since then, things have gone better for Price and he hopes to continue that trend Sunday night when the Red Sox conclude a three-game series with the New York Yankees.
Since struggling in New York two months ago, Price is 4-5 but has a 3.12 ERA in his last 12 starts. In his last three starts he has a 2.82 ERA and 30 strikeouts over his last 22 1/3 innings.
Price went into the All-Star break by pitching eight outstanding innings in a 4-0 win over Tampa Bay last Sunday.
Price has 36 career games of double-digit strikeouts, but the only one against the Yankees came Aug. 5, 2014 with Detroit.
It was one of the 33 times he has faced the Yankees. In those games, Price is 14-8 with a 4.34 ERA and has a 8-3 record with a 3.64 ERA in New York.
Boston hasn't completed a three-game sweep of the Yankees in New York since June 7-9, 2011.
The Red Sox also can get their first-three game sweep in New York in a series played after the All-Star break since Sept. 10-11, 1999, a weekend highlighted by Martinez's 17-strikeout game

Happ vs Hill

Happ is 12-3 with a 3.36 ERA in 18 starts this season in his second stint with the Blue Jays. Hill is 9-3 with a 2.25 ERA in 16 starts in his first season with the A's.
Hill was initially scheduled to pitch Friday night against Toronto, but his start was pushed back two days because of two blisters on the middle finger of his left hand. Hill said a blister developed late in his final start before the All-Star break against Houston and that another one appeared after he had a long throwing session on flat ground three days later on July 10.
"It's fine now," Hill said Saturday. "There's no issues. It feels good. .... I think it was more of a precautionary thing than anything, to make sure it was 100 percent healed. And we had the time to do that."
Happ has been on a roll since being traded by Seattle to Pittsburgh on July 31 last season. He went 7-2 with a 1.85 ERA in 11 starts for the Pirates then stayed hot after re-signing with the Blue Jays, with whom he played for from 2012-2014.
"That was the plan, that was the goal definitely," Happ said of picking up where he left off in Pittsburgh. "I think just trying to be consistent. I always say that's the hardest thing in this game, but I do feel I'm in a better place mentally for sure. And with my mechanics I feel like I'm able to make adjustments. Just trying to stay there."
Happ has gone 6-0 in his past six starts with an ERA of 2.95, 41 strikeouts and eight walks. He earned his 12th win, matching his career single-season high, on July 8, blanking Detroit over 5 2/3 innings. Happ struck out nine and walked one.
Happ went 12-4 with Philadelphia in 2009 when he made 35 appearances, including 23 starts.
Hill signed a one-year, $6 million contract as a free agent with the A's during the offseason. Now he's drawing considerable interest from teams throughout baseball as the Aug. 1 non-waiver trade deadline approaches.

Conley

Sunday when Miami (48-42) marches lefty Adam Conley (6-5, 3.62) to the mound. Conley is coming off a 4-2 win July 9 over the Cincinnati Reds, and averages nearly a strikeout an inning, although he also issues nearly four walks per nine innings.
This will be the first time Conley has faced St. Louis in a regular season game, although he's probably seen it at least once in exhibition games as the teams share a spring training complex in Jupiter, Fla.
The same goes for Cardinals right hander Michael Wacha (5-7, 4.36), who hasn't pitched since going 6 2/3 innings in a no-decision on July 8 in Milwaukee. Wacha departed that game after being struck with a comebacker in the right heel, but wasn't seriously injured.
Even though the calendar says July 17 and the teams will have 71 games remaining after this one, there is some importance to this one. The Marlins enter tied with the New York Mets for the National League's second wild-card spot, while St. Louis (47-43) is a game back.
Saturday night's 5-0 setback snapped a four-game winning streak for Miami, but it didn't spend much time dwelling on that result against a hot pitcher who's allowed only one run over his last 23 innings.

A nice weekend finally, let's see if it holds up this week

9 Lefties go to the mound tonight

Sale-White Sox
Lester-Cubs
Smyly-Rays
Anderson-Rockies
LeBlanc-Mariners
Boyd-Tigers
Matz-Mets
Finnegan-Reds
Friedrich-Padres

Lester vs Matz

The Cubs have something to prove after being swept by the Mets in four games in New York between June 30 and July 3. Chicago was also eliminated by New York in four games in the 2015 National League Championship Series.
Chicago has lost eight straight to New York after taking seven straight regular-season games during 2015.
Lester (9-4, 3.01 ERA) faces left-hander Steve Matz (7-5, 3.38 ERA) on Monday and looks to right himself after allowing 12 earned runs in his last two starts. He had given up just 24 runs total in his first 16 starts.
Lester gave up a season-high eight runs in a career-low 1 1/2 innings in his outing on July 3 at Citi Field.
Chicago appears to be shaking off a pre-All Star game slump in which it lost 15 of 20 games.
The Cubs (55-36) then won three straight, including a 6-5 victory over Pittsburgh, just before the break. The Rangers broke that winning streak with Sunday's 4-1 victory but the Cubs still took two of three from the American League West leaders.
The Mets (49-42) had also been struggling to gain traction prior to the break, dropping four of their last six and losing ground to first-place Washington in the National League East.
But on Sunday, New York claimed a 5-0 victory over the Phillies thanks to Jacob deGrom's dominant, complete-game, one-hit shutout. The Mets took two of three in the post-All Star Game series.
Matz, who started the season at 7-1, gets first crack at Chicago.
He took the loss in the Mets' 3-2 loss to Washington on July 10 after working seven innings and allowing three runs on six hits. He is 4-2 on the road this season in seven road starts.

Smyly vs Anderson

Left-hander Drew Smyly will start for the Rays Monday. He is 2-10 with a 5.47 ERA and tied his career high with his 10th loss July 6 against the Angels in his last start. He began the season 1-3 with a 2.72 ERA in his first six starts and allowed five homers in 39 1/3 innings. But in his past 11 starts, Smyly is 1-7 with a 7.27 ERA and yielded 15 homers in 60 2/3 innings.
A 1-0 loss Sunday at Atlanta prevented the Rockies from sweeping a three-game series with the Braves. Still, they won the series and now need to cash in on a seven-game homestand that will conclude with four games with the Braves following the series with the Rays. The Rockies are 20-22 at home.
Left-hander Tyler Anderson, who is 1-3 with a 3.03 in six career starts, will take the mound for the Rockies. In his last start July 9 against the Phillies, Anderson recorded his first win, first hit and first home run of his career. He has pitched six innings in each of his past three starts and has gone at least that distance in four of his six starts while issuing just six walks with 32 strikeouts in 35 2/3 innings.

Sale vs LeBlanc

After a nine-day break, White Sox ace Chris Sale returns to the mound Monday night at Safeco Field to begin a three-game series against the Mariners. That break actually wasn't quite as long as it seems. Sale allowed a season-high eight runs on July 8 at home against the Braves, and then started the All-Star Game for the American League on Tuesday in San Diego. Despite throwing nine pitches in that one inning of work, the White Sox decided to give Sale an extra day.The five-time All-Star holds the Major League lead with 14 victories. He also ranks in the Top 5 in the AL in strikeouts (123), WHIP (1.04) and average against (.225). Sale stands 4-0 with a 2.66 ERA lifetime against the Mariners, fanning 54 in 40 2/3 innings.Wade LeBlanc makes his fourth start for the Mariners since being acquired from the Blue Jays as a midseason fill-in. He pitched well in his first two games, and then gave up six hits and five runs (four earned) in 3 1/3 innings his last outing in Houston.

GREAT work Lefty :tiphat:

a few thoughts for what they are worth...down on myself pretty big rightnnow.....
Hard to believe that Leblanc can go pitch for pitch with Sale but it is a very unenviable task and a lot to ask of a young pitcher as Sale has been lights out once again and should be considered a contender for another Cy Young award.

Anderson is coming off his first major league win in his last start, which came against the Phillies July 9. He threw six innings, allowing two runs on nine hits with no walks and six strikeouts. Gotta believe that the Rocks can hit Smyly the way he has struggled on the hill this season.

Cubs hit lefties well and the Mets don’t give Matz much run support, scoring three runs or less in seven out of his last ten starts, plus they are on the road so I think the Cubs take this one at home.

BOL my friend

Mr Hound I thank you for your kind words & insight. Hopefully your health is doing better. I need to keep my head down & pay attention to the details.
Let's both have a big week

9 Lefties going to the hill today

Keuchel-Astros
Snell-Rays
Quintana-White Sox
Miley-Mariners
Overton-A's
Flynn-Royals
Milone-Twins
Reed-Reds
Kazmir-Dodgers

Keuchel

Keuchel faced Oakland on July 10 and delivered a strong punctuation to an otherwise lacking first half, allowing one run and striking out five over seven innings in a 2-1 win. The reigning American League Cy Young winner is 6-9 with a 4.80 ERA in 19 starts, but he was 3-0 with a 2.78 ERA in five starts prior to the All-Star break.
Keuchel's struggled on the road this year, going 4-6 with a 5.50 ERA in 11 road starts, and he's never won at the Coliseum despite posting a 3.03 ERA in five career appearances.

Overton

A's will counter with their own lefty, rookie Dillon Overton, whom they will recall from Triple-A Nashville for a spot start, taking Sean Manaea's scheduled turn in the rotation after Manaea threw five innings of emergency relief Sunday.
Overton's 1-1 with an 11.42 ERA in two starts with Oakland, and Tuesday marks his second stint in the Majors. He lasted just three innings in his most recent start June 30 against the Giants, giving up eight runs on eight hits. He's 10-4 with a 2.98 ERA in 16 games (15 starts) in Triple-A, and A's manager Bob Melvin said Overton's been on the team's radar all year.

Quintana vs Miley

Mariners will hand the ball to Wade Miley. The southpaw is looking to snap his four-game losing streak, which is tied with the longest of his career. Three of those starts came after missing two starts with a left shoulder impingement.

Miley allowed four earned runs on 10 hits in his last start against the Astros on July 9.

Jose Quintana will start for the White Sox. The lefty has had plenty of rest since pitching in the All-Star Game last Tuesday. He threw a scoreless fifth inning for the American League. Quintanta has a 3.21 ERA over 18 games this season.

Chicago's Melky Cabrera and Brett Lawrie have had success against Miley in the past. In nine at-bats against Miley, Cabrera is batting .556 with two doubles and two RBIs. In eight, Lawrie is batting .571 with a home run and three RBIs.In the three games he has pitched against the White Sox, Miley is 1-2 with a 6.52 ERA.Quintana has faced the Mariners in six games and in started five of those. He is 0-1 with a 4.50 ERA against Seattle in his career.

9 Lefties go to the hill today

Pomeranz-Red Sox
Gonzalez-Nats
Locke-Pirates
Chen-Marlins
Garcia-Cardinals
Perez-Rangers
Santiago-Angels
De LaRosa-Rockies
Corbin-D'Backs

Pomeranz

Pomeranz faces a familiar foe in his Red Sox debut, a Giants team he's already faced three times this season and was scheduled to start against last Sunday before the trade.
Boston (52-39) earned a 4-0 victory over the league-leading Giants (57-37), which has never won in four tries at Fenway Park since moving to San Francisco in 1958.
The Giants suffered a three-game sweep at Fenway in 2007.
Pomeranz, a first-time All-Star, is 0-2 with a 2.60 ERA in three starts against San Francisco this season and 1-4 with a 4.54 ERA over nine appearances (seven starts) lifetime.
Buster Posey is 6-for-13 (.462) with two homers and three RBIs against Pomeranz. The only Giants player who has hit Pomeranz harder is Hunter Pence (4-for-14, four homers, eight RBIs).

Gonzalez

Nationals are slated to start veteran left-hander and former Oakland pitcher Gio Gonzalez, who had pitched better of late after a bad patch in June. He has a 1.73 ERA in four career starts against the Dodgers.
Gonzalez will try to right the ship after rookie Reynaldo Lopez was hit hard in his big league debut on Tuesday against the Dodgers.
The Nationals are without starter Joe Ross, who has been on the disabled list since July 3 with right shoulder inflammation. Ross did throw before Tuesday's game and could make a minor league rehab appearance later this week.
"He looked very good today. He threw 35 consecutive pitches today. He had good velocity, good slider. Barring setbacks, he may go out and pitch somewhere this weekend," Nationals manager Dusty Baker said Tuesday.
Gonzalez last pitched July 10 in New York against the Mets and picked up the win in a 3-2 game.
Chase Utley is hitting .150 in 20 at-bats against Gonzalez and Justin Turner is batting .154 in 13 trips to the plate against the Miami-area native.

Locke

Jeff Locke (8-5) tries to add a bit of clarification on Wednesday night as he takes on another struggling starter, right-hander Chase Anderson (4-10), in the second game of a three-game series against the Milwaukee Brewers.
The Pirates come in with two straight wins and 11 in their 15 games. The Brewers have dropped five of six.
Locke's record looks OK - he is 3-0 in his last four starts and 7-2 in his last 10 -- but he has a 5.26 ERA and yielded a troubling 27 earned runs in 31 1/3 innings. And despite being a left-hander who has shown he can win consistently in the majors, he hears rumors nearly every time he starts that he's on the trading block.

Perez vs Santiago

Angels left-hander Hector Santiago looks to continue his strong stretch Wednesday as he opposes fellow southpaw Martin Perez in the series finale against the Rangers, with the Angels going for the sweep.Perez is 1-5 with a 5.49 ERA in 10 starts on the road this season, the ninth-highest road ERA in club history among qualified starters. It's currently the sixth-highest road ERA in the American League. He is one of 36 pitchers to make 10 road starts this season, and one of just three with one or fewer wins. Angels right-hander Jhoulys Chacin has one and right-hander Kevin Gausman of the Orioles has zero.Perez plans to keep things simple as he looks to improve his mark in opposing ballparks."Just compete," Perez said. "Throw my pitches where I want [them] and find a way to win. I need to stay with my plan, throw my sinker for strikes and get ground balls and get quick outs. I know these guys like to swing the bat so I need to throw the ball where I want it."Santiago has battled inconsistency for most of this season, but appears to be in a groove over his last few starts. He became just the third pitcher in franchise history to record three consecutive starts with no earned runs allowed, after he tossed seven shutout innings against the White Sox on Friday. He has four quality starts in his last five outings. His performance has thrust him into some trade conversations, but the odds seem low after right-hander Nick Tropeano was diagnosed Tuesday with a medium- to high-grade tear of the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow.Perez has had success against the Angels in the past, going 2-2 with a 2.25 ERA in seven career appearances (six starts). Santiago has been a mixed bag against Texas, going 1-2 with a 4.75 ERA in eight appearances (seven starts) against them at Angel Stadium.

Santiago is the first left-handed starter the Rangers have faced since the All-Star break. A pair of hitters toward the top of the order have thrived off lefties, with Ian Desmond hitting an American League-best .394 against them this season. Elvis Andrus ranks third in the AL, hitting .378 against lefties.Angels third baseman Yunel Escobar is also proficient against left-handers this season, as his .359 batting average ranks seventh-best in the AL.The middle of the Rangers' order has wreaked havoc on Santiago in the past. Third baseman Adrian Beltre and designated hitter Prince Fielder have faced Santiago more than any opponent has, with each going 9-for-36 against him lifetime. Beltre has three home runs against him -- tied for the second-most of any opponent.

4 Lefties take the mound today

Sabathia-Yankees
Liriano-Pirates
Moore-Rays
Urias-Dodgers

Urias

Stephen Strasburg (13-0, 2.51 ERA) will start for the Nationals against 19-year-old Dodgers lefty Julio Urias (1-2, 4.95).
In the series opener Tuesday night, it was the Nationals who started a rookie, as right-hander Reynaldo Lopez made his big league debut and was tagged with the loss after he gave up 10 hits and fanned nine in 4 2/3 innings.
Dodgers veteran Scott Kazmir threw seven innings of one-run ball that night, leading Los Angeles to an 8-4 victory. The Dodgers bounced back to beat the Nationals 8-1 Wednesday.
Urias will be summoned from Triple-A for the start on Thursday -- just as Lopez was on Tuesday.

will be the third stint with the Dodgers this year for Urias and his ninth start. He made his last big league start on July 4 at home against the Baltimore Orioles and gave up five runs on six hits in 3 1/3 innings.
He has struck out 44 and walked 17 in 36 1/3 this season at the big league level. With Triple-A Oklahoma City, he is 4-1 with a 1.07 ERA in nine games (seven starts), logging 45 strikeouts and just eight walks in 42 innings.
Urias faced the Nationals on June 22 in Los Angeles, and he gave up two runs on six hits in five innings. He did not figure in the decision as the Dodgers won 4-3 while sweeping a three-game series.
In that game, Urias struck out six and walked one while throwing 94 pitches.
The Dodgers need Urias to step up to assist an ailing rotation. Ace left-hander Clayton Kershaw is on the disabled list due to a herniated back disk, and the timetable for his return is uncertain. Meanwhile, left-hander Alex Wood underwent an arthroscopic debridement on his left elbow Wednesday in New York City, and he is expected to miss eight weeks.

Liriano

The Pittsburgh Pirates, never one to throw money around, are paying left-hander Francisco Liriano $13 million to be their staff ace this season. They've been rewarded with only five victories, and just one in his last nine starts dating to May 24.
Liriano's struggles are more pronounced because he has been in the Pirates' rotation all season, making 19 starts. But he's lasted at least six innings only once since June 11 -- during a 5-1 loss in Washington on Friday.
And the problems he developed early in the season with his mechanics, and with throwing strikes, aren't going away.
Once the protege of Pirates pitching coach Ray Searage, Liriano and Searage haven't seemed to be on the same page as Liriano's uneven first half of the season has carried over into the second half. And with the Pirates searching for a reliable starting rotation down the stretch -- they'd probably like to add a starter -- it becomes even more important for them to get Liriano untracked.
"I'm more focused on throwing strikes right now, not thinking about the hitters and whether they can put the ball in play or not," Liriano said after the Nationals loss, in which he walked at least three for the ninth time in 10 starts. "I'm just making sure I'm executing pitches and throwing everything down in the zone."

Sabathia

CC Sabathia will be seeking his 20th career win against the Orioles and his 15th with the Yankees. More important, he will be looking to reverse some of his recent struggles.
Since June 22, he is 0-3 with a 7.94 ERA and during those starts he has allowed 39 hits and walked 10 in 28 1/3 innings.
Before lowering his ERA to 3.94 during the recent stretch, Sabathia had a 0.82 ERA in a span of seven starts and was the first Yankee to allow four earned runs or less in a span of seven starts since Phil Niekro did it in 1984 at age 45.
The latest subpar outing for Sabathia was Saturday's 5-2 loss to the Boston Red Sox when he allowed five runs and nine hits in 5 1/3 innings.
Sabathia faced the Orioles twice when the teams met in Baltimore. On May 4, he allowed six hits in seven innings during a 7-0 victory while suffering a groin injury. On June 5, he allowed two hits but walked six in five innings and the Yankees eventually lost 3-1.

6 Lefties go to the mound today

Bumgarner-Giants
Duffy-Royals
Conley-Marlins
Paxton-Mariners
Rodriguez-Red Sox
Manaea-A's

Bumgarner

The Giants hope Bumgarner will resemble the pitcher who struck out 14 in a one-hitter against Arizona on July 10 and not the pitcher who allowed four runs and seven hits during six innings in last Friday's loss at San Diego.
"We've got Bum on the mound, right?" Giants right fielder Mac Williamson told reporters. "I think we're always confident when he's out there."
Bumgarner will face the Yankees for the first time but has matched up with a few of their hitters. New York's switch hitters and right-handed bats have done well against him, but its left-handed bats have not.
Starlin Castro is 11-for-26 against Bumgarner while switch-hitters Carlos Beltran and Chase Headley are 2-for-6 and 10-for-33, respectively. Left-handed hitters Brian McCann and Didi Gregorius are 1-for-9 and 1-for-8, respectively.
The Yankees had a four-game winning streak stopped with Thursday's 4-1 loss to the Baltimore Orioles. New York had four hits and dropped to 4-3 on its 10-game homestand.

Duffy

Left-hander Danny Duffy will start for the Royals. Duffy, who began the season in the bullpen, is 5-1 with a 3.27 ERA and leads the club with 101 strikeouts. Since June 1, his 67 strikeouts top the AL.
Duffy is 0-1 with a 7.24 ERA in his three previous appearances against the Rangers.

Rodriguez
Eduardo Rodriguez (2-3, 7.18 ERA) hopes to keep the good times rolling after a stellar return against the Yankees in New York last Saturday following a stint in the minors.
The 23-year-old southpaw turned in his best performance of the season, holding the Yankees to one run on four hits and two walks with a strikeout in a seven-inning victory.
Rodriguez was optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket on June 28 to work on mechanical issues after claims he was tipping pitches. He made two starts with the PawSox, going 0-1 with a 1.80 ERA.
He is 1-0 with a 3.86 ERA in two career starts against the Twins, with Brian Dozier going 2-for-4 with a solo home run and two walks against him.

7 Lefties take the mound today

Sale-White Sox
Price-Red Sox
Hamels-Rangers
Smyly-Rays
Boyd-Tigers
Anderson-Tigers
Ray-D'Backs

Sale vs Boyd

Left-hander Chris Sale, who could yield a bevy of prospects from a desperate contender. Expect plenty of "buyers" to be watching as Sale takes the mound Saturday against the Detroit Tigers.
In all likelihood, the 27-year-old southpaw will stay in Chicago for at least the remainder of the season. At 14-3 with a 3.18 ERA, he is a top candidate for the American League Cy Young Award.
Left-hander Matt Boyd (1-2, 4.91 ERA) will make his eighth start Saturday for Detroit. The 25-year-old is coming off his first win of the season after pitching six scoreless innings against Minnesota. Boyd allowed six runs in 4 1/3 innings in his first appearance against the White Sox on June 13.
Detroit is 5-3 since the All-Star break and trails Cleveland by six games in the division.
Sale is no stranger to Detroit's hitters. He is 8-6 with a 3.20 ERA in his career against the Tigers, including a 5-3 mark with a 2.97 ERA in 16 outings (nine starts) at U.S. Cellular Field. Sale earned the victory against Detroit on June 15 after limiting the Tigers to three runs in seven innings.
Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said he would not be surprised if his team stood pat at the deadline. Detroit could receive a boost soon as right-hander Jordan Zimmermann (right neck strain) and outfielder J.D. Martinez (right elbow) approach their returns.
"Sometimes, the best move is to do nothing," Ausmus said.

Hamels

The Rangers will counter with All-Star left-hander Cole Hamels. This will be first time to appear in a regular-season game at Kauffman Stadium. He did throw a perfect inning there in the 2012 All-Star Game, retiring Billy Butler, Matt Wieters and Adam Jones. He worked a scoreless inning in this year's All-Star game in San Diego.
The Rangers are 14-5 in Hamels' starts this season, including winning seven of his past eight. He struck out the first six Chicago Cubs he faced in his Sunday start, a 4-1 victory, allowing four hits and one unearned run in eight innings.

Price

Price (9-7, 4.36 ERA) has been durable, if nothing else, in his recent starts at Fenway Park.
The high-priced southpaw is 6-3 with a 4.06 ERA at home this season, but has gone eight innings in four straight Fenway starts.
Price finished an out shy of a quality start Sunday against the Yankees in New York, allowing three runs on 11 hits and a walk -- but with just one strikeout -- in a 5 2/3-inning loss.
"I couldn't execute whatever pitch I was throwing to get an out," Price said. "That's tough."
It was the second time this year Price recorded one strikeout in a start. He also totaled one in his June 24 start at Texas, something he hadn't done in 40 prior turns.
"You guys are tired of hearing it, and I'm tired of saying it: I've got to execute," Price said.
Price is 9-3 with a 2.12 ERA in 15 starts career against Minnesota. Brian Dozier is 6-for-31 lifetime against Price, but has two home runs, four RBIs and two walks.

Cubs offense is not spectacular right now and Davies has pitched well of this year at home with a 3.79 ERA and a 1.11 WHIP so far, plus he has allowed more than three ERs just once over his last nine starts.Lackey has struggled some of late and on the road. I hate to miss out on a winner seeing how stroungly U feel about this play
