I Went To The Canadian Grand Prix 2023

I booked this trip in November 2022 for Montreal last week. I went with Montreal because it was somewhere I wanted to go, it was reasonably close, and it was far cheaper than anything in the states.

We landed Saturday afternoon for the Sunday race.

We booked a holiday inn by the airport for $250 a night. Airport is about 30 minutes out from downtown. Most hotels in the city were at least 5-600 a night. The week before our hotel was $900 a night.

We got tickets for $300 a piece at grandstand 34 in the center of the hairpin turn which is on the opposite side from the finish line.

More to come later…I’ll have a few lessons learned and what I would change. I will say, it was awesome, even for the roommate

Awesome, can't wait for the rundown. Getting to the point F1 is bigger than a prize fight in boxing.

Guessing you like anyone else has gotten priced out of Vegas, crazy to think Thanksgiving weekend was always one of the cheapest weekends of the year in LV until now.

Came in late Saturday afternoon and we went straight downtown. Despite the drizzle all through the night there was a ton of people everywhere and their different blocks that were shut down with pop up stores. Even with all the people, the city is big enough that we didnt have to wait long to get dinner at a pub.

We stumbled upon the Ritz Carlton, where at the very least both Sainz and Leclerc were staying and there was a ton of people waiting for them to walk through the front door. Saw them both, security stopped them from getting mobbed. Got a couple pictures, but nothing where you can tell them apart from anybody else.

Good time - and theres a ton of people in Ferraris and Lambo's everywhere.

Race Day : Not having any idea what was going - our ticket said 9 AM so we made plans to get their at 9 AM. We took a taxi to a subway station and took the subway to the Jean Drapeau park which is compromised of two islands on the St. Lawrence river.

We walked around the track and there was a bunch ofevents...a simulator, a Monster event had some free drinks, a tire changing competition. What seemed like a few hundred food trucks where at the event - tried my first poutine with duck there. Did some more walking around - got some cool souvenirs. Snuck into a section by the start line during the drivers parade, saw all the drivers and that was cool.

Race starts - its a little hectic and a tight squeeze in the bleachers but the atmosphere is great (sun came out just as the race was starting too). As I mentioned, I was on the hairpin and this part of the track is where you see the cars the most (reason I landed on these seats). Seeing these cars in person and seeing the speed they were moving at was just a little bit unreal. Hard to describe, but really awesome seeing the cars in person. We did seeing some passing too, which of course was a highlight.

Race ends - Verstappen wins by 9 seconds. I'd seen this with other races but I didnt expect it in Canada for some reason but suddenly everyone is jumping the fence and running on the track. It's like a tidal wave, and everyone is running. We are literally at the opposite end of the track - so we realize if we run, maybe we make the podium. With out huge ass bags we run what I would guess was 3/4 of a mile. We make it just in time to see Verstappen get the first-place trophy.

Walked around the track for a bit and there happens to be a casino on the island next to the track - pretty nice but lost a couple hundred.

Came back out, went to the Heineken beer garden and there is an enormous party going. Awesome - had a bunch of drunks, had a great time, met some people no complaints. Went back downtown - more festivities going on - no problem finding some dinner. Went back to the hotel

What I would do over again:

I would probably come for the whole weekend, at the very least for the full Saturday and Sunday and come in on Friday night. It was really impressive how you could feel the city was completely taken over by F1. I felt like we were in the center of the world.

Price permitting, I would pay more for tickets and try to sit by the start/finish line. While seeing some passing at the hairpin was awesome, I truthfully didnt have a clue what was going on in the actual race by Lap 20. There is a screen where you can watch the race from your seats, but it is way too small. From what I saw tickets were probably around 6-700 at the line - thats far from cheap but I think you are getting a better/fuller experience by spending a bit more.

Not sure if this Montreal centric but I would likely not come at 9 AM (for a 2 PM start time) the next time. It was cool walk around, but lines were long and not worth it to do certain things. If I were to go to Montreal again, I'd probably come around 11 AM.

Everything being said it was a great experience and I'm not sure if it will be Montreal, but we will go again one day. Montreal was really quite organized as well - not sure if thats the case everywhere though (im sure its not). Aside from the race, we loved Montreal/Quebec City. It was one of your best food trips in my opinion. Awesome clothing shops. awesome vibe.

I didnt realize this until fairly recently but its actually the weekend before Thanksgiving. I think I saw recently Circus Circus was $500 a night that weekend and I knew I was out. I think as a whole it's unlikely we ever go to F1 in the states (Austin is the only possibility). They are pricing people out but I think the sport wants to be exclusive so this will not really stop. Side note I've never seen so much Gucci in my life.

Great stuff! Thanks for the info

Guessing those cities who have hosted have it down to a science now which means Vegas will be a clusterfuck

Think Montreal or Austin would be my start point if I ever go

Funny, I just looked it up and the DJ performing at the the enormous party I mentioned we went too was Martin Garrix

Oh wow it is the week before, it's been pitched as Thanksgiving weekend all along

9:55pm Pacific on a Saturday night, the 19th of November

Will be something close to Armageddon

Yeah I am pretty curious how this will go. I don’t know of a time where Vegas has been shutdown city wide for a whole weekend
