Two ways the first game could go IMO

Brazil wins 1-0

Brazil win 4-0

I have a feeling Croatia will sit back, pray to get a point out of it or at least not get crushed on goal differential.

If Mexico plays Brazil straight up they will get crushed. Mexico's defense is awful

Brazil, Croatia, Cameroon, Mexico

where does the Mexican optimism come from?

. I think they are talented offensively, and if the coach can get them to play together they can get out of here. Books have them right with Croatia

I think Cameroon is better then the books are giving them credit for, I could see them getting 2nd tbh

somebody said it, I think it was Ghilbilly. Brazil is going want to put on a show these group games. They won't let up, and could smoke everyone

I think Croatia are 2nd easily, and if the tournament wasn't in Brazil I would really like their odds for 1st

Guess just put squad announcements in group threads.

Portuguese authorities have revealed Brazil coach Luiz Felipe Scolari is the subject of a criminal investigation.
Officials have refused to confirm what the investigation relates to, with the matter falling under the country's judicial secrecy law.
Reports in Brazil and the Netherlands have claimed Scolari is suspected of tax evasion but he has denied any wrongdoing.
"I have correctly filed all my tax returns in all the countries where I have worked and I have always declared my income," he said.
"If anything is wrong, it is not my fault. I hope justice gets to the bottom of the facts."
Scolari was head coach of Portugal from 2003-2008 and guided his native Brazil to World Cup glory in the Far East over Germany at the 2002 tournament.
The 65-year-old began his second spell in the role in 2012 and will lead Brazil when they host this year's World Cup.
Brazil play Croatia in the opening match of the tournament in Sao Paulo on 12 June.

On Saturday, Mexico midfielder Luis Montes was stretchered off of El Tri’s friendly with Ecuador at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, after fracturing his right tibia and fibula, according to Univision. The 28-year-old Leon player has been ruled out of the World Cup.

Can't say I know much about him, but from what I have read he is considered to be Mexico's best two -way midfielder

yes, his goal today was a real nice piece of work. I watch these guys play all the time and have been down on them since the middle of last year. That said, they have looked a bit sharper in the two games this week than I was expecting. I still think they will be mincemeat for the Brazilians in the second group stage match but the efforts this week has me less convinced that they've got no chance to get out of the group, even though i still fancy Cameroon and Croatia a bit more.

they have some good offensive talent, and good speed. THey are awful defensively IMO and that will probably be their undoing but that being said I don't think there is a whole lot that separates Croatia, Mexico, and Cameroon

how do you suspect Mexico will play in this tourney tatically?. Obviously they will sit back against Brazil, but they will probably attack against the other two. Wondering if they may be a team to look at for overs

I made 7 limit bets in my Pinnacle account when the draw came out in December and the lines were virgin, and the one I regret and/or would get out of the most at this point is OVER 2.25 +102 in their opening match against Cameroon.

I have probably watched this team play more than anyone I know and (unfortunately) have been subjected to their scrutiny from the TV talking heads more than you guys as well (ESPN Deportes, TDN). The federation did the right thing in hiring a club coach and sending him out against an overmatched New Zealand team for 180 minutes (yes, i watched both matches, wagered on both too I think, including a 3 am jobber back here that was in Wellington last November). But that type of guy isn't going to get you far in a World Cup, especially if you don't utilize your European talent properly. They're not going to advance if hopes hinge on the Club America and Leon guys - they need help from their real talents.

That said, the offense has been suspect and especially at forward. Meanwhile, the defense has been cohesive. This game in Chicago on Tuesday against a clearly (in my mind) superior team will be a good test. If they can keep BIH from scoring more than 1 or so, then I know I am in real trouble when it comes to that first total, even though Cameroon will be more attack-oriented and less defensive. Goal differential should/could matter here, so neither team will probably be interested in a draw. That helps my over. Both teams seem good enough defensively to thwart the other, which will hurt me. I will learn more this week.

:shake:

you nailed it, neither will be interested in a draw i think we should start to look at how the teams who were considered the outsiders of a group faired in their opening matches.

Croatia's short (been a FIFA/UEFA recognized country in 1993) but storied (third place in 1998 France behind a golden boot from Davor Suker) history shows them not qualifying last time for South Africa after three straight WC appearances. The Blazers feature one of the best central midfielders in the world in Real Madrid's Luca Modric, who can do just about anything. Add Ivan Rakitic, Mateo Kovacic and Niko Kranjcar and there's certainly no shortage of creative playmakers. However, a lack of wingers will hurt them. That lack of width in the midfield will cause them tactical issues in this group, despite them being having better outfield talent than anyone except Brazil. Still, Cameroon's weaknesses and Mexico's limitations means I still fancy this side to progress out of the group, even after falling behind the 8-ball in the opener without the suspended Mario Mandzukic.

Cameroon veteran striker Mohammadou Idrissou was left out of the 23. He currently plays for Maccabi Haifi. He was the lone (somewhat-) notable absence.

Niko is injured which hurts their wing options, he's not a burner and he plays at a pace Berbatov thinks is a bit too slow but he knows how to cut in from the left

they will likely just play 3 strikers with 2 out wide, maybe Kovacic, especially against Brazil where they will want Vukojevic to protect in front of the back four

Olic and Eduardo aren't great wide players, but against teams where Croatia can control the ball, and with Luka and Rakitic they should against everyone except the the top few teams, their 3 up top around the box should lead to scoring chances

If this truly is the starting lineup , after tonight's game I'm not sure how he could justify Hernandez not starting, unless he isn't fit to start. He is better than Dos Santos
