Friday 02/08/13 NBA discussion thread

Locked in Suns plus 4 first quarter. Very high number for this team. Think push and win seriously more likely than loss.

Real slow start today. So many contadictions. Like Hornets but on a terrible road record matched by Atlanta really playing well and looking at a real chance to move up in standings.

Detroit almost makes it as a play. Almost. It is very rare for this team to fail ATS 3 in a row. Spurs have 2 games ahead they want more I think. Problem is they still want this one and Detroit is playing with major revenge away tomorrow. Just pass

  • The Lakers are just23-27 heading into tonight’s game against Charlotte. This is only the 3rd time since the ABA-NBA merger that the Lakers are below .500 through 50 games. The Lakers are 8-8 all-time against the Bobcats. Charlotte is just one of three teams that the Lakers don’t have a winning record against. The other two teams are the Boston Celtics and San Antonio Spurs.

  • The Bobcats will have Michael Kidd-Gilchrist (concussion) back in the lineup tonight. He needed to be cleared by one more doctor before receiving final clearance. Kidd-Gilchrist participated in Charlotte’s shootaround this morning and will be in the team’s starting lineup per coach Mike Dunlap. “He’s ready to roll,” Dunlap said, “and we’re excited about that. We’ll see how crisp he is and how he moves around the floor.”

  • Charlotte forward Byron Mullens will also return to the starting lineup. Mullens returned to the floor during Charlotte’s five-game roadtrip, but hasn’t started until Friday. “That’s what we’ve been moving towards and tonight we’ll see how many minutes he can play,” Dunlap said.

  • Lakers center Dwight Howard will be in the starting lineup against Charlotte. Howard had just nine rebounds and nine points in the Lakers loss at Boston Thursday night. Howard has missed the previous four games with a torn right labrum. “It’s tough for anybody when you’re not physically well all the time,” Los Angeles coach Mike D’Antoni said, “You’v got a got a lot of pressure. You’ve target on your backs. It’s like LeBron (James) going to Miami but not physically feeling good, so it makes it tougher. He’s got to work through it and we’ve got to make the playoffs and turn this season into something positive.”

  • Chris Broussard of ESPN is reporting that league sources indicate the Bobcats and New Jersey Nets are discussing a deal with would send Ben Gordon to the Nets in exchange for Kris Humphries. Both players make approximately $12 million dollars so the trade could work from a salary cap perspective. The Bobcats were interested in Humphries over the summer during free agency. Gordon is averaging 13.1 points per game on the season and connecting on almost 42 percent from the three-point line.

  • Brooklyn Nets coach P.J. Carlesimo says that G Deron Williams is eager to play against Washington Wizards G John Wall. “His position–there’s pretty much not a night where you get a night off,” Carlesimo said. “Deron certainly rises to the occasion when he’s playing against the elite point guards of the lead.”
  • Nets F/G Jerry Stackhouse should be ready to play after missing two games with a stiff neck.
  • Wizards G Bradley Beal should be ready to play after missing five games with a sore right wrist.
  • Washington G Jordan Crawford is now in coach Randy Wittman’s doghouse. The team’s second leading scorer has only played 11 minutes in the last two games. “We’re playing at a good level right now with people we’re playing,” Wittman said. “It’s not like any of the other players who go through ups and downs through the course of the year.”

[h=2]RAPTORS at PACERS, 7 P.M. ET[/h] February 8, 2013 · 6:17PM

  • Coming off a sweep of the only three-game, three-night set in the NBA this season – winning all by double figures – Indiana Coach Frank Vogel gave his players extended rest with no practice Thursday and no shootaround Friday morning. “This is still our fourth game in five nights and there is still an element of fatigue,” he said. “We have to make sure we bring great energy and great focus even in spite of any fatigue we might feel.”

  • Paul George was an iron-man in the back-to-back-to-back set, playing 123½ of a possible 144 minutes – an average of 41.2 per game. He produced averages of 21.7 points, 7.1 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 1.67 steals and hit .471 from the 3-point line. He also attempted 25 free throws, 8.3 per game, more than double his season average of 3.2.

  • Rudy Yag didn’t have much luck against George while with Memphis. In two meetings this season, Yag totaled 25 points on 10 of 39 shooting (.256), but Vogel said those numbers aren’t relevant to tonight’s matchup because Yag is playing much differently with the Raptors. “He was more of a system guy (in Memphis),” Vogel said. “Coming in now, he’s thirsty for shots, looking to be that scorer, that main go-to guy, 21 field goal attempts per game, shooting the 3-ball now. We’ve got a big, big challenge in guarding him.”

  • Toronto has dropped two of three since acquiring Yag but he has not disappointed, leading the team in scoring in each while averaging 24.7 points, 6.3 rebounds and 2.67 steals. He has struggled to find the range on his 3-point shot, hitting 5 of 18 (.267).

  • Indiana has won five in a row overall, its longest streak of the season and 15 straight at home, its longest since the franchise-record 25-game streak in the 1999-00 season the team’s first in Bankers Life Fieldhouse (it was then known as Conseco Fieldhouse).

  • Sam Young (flu) will miss tonight’s game for Indiana, with Gerald Green picking up his minutes. The Raptors are without Landry Fields (back spasms) and Linas Kleiza (sore right knee).

[h=2]MAGIC AT CAVALIERS, 7:30 P.M. ET[/h] February 8, 2013 · 6:30PM
TV: League Pass

  • The Magic will have 11 players in uniform as shooting guard Arron Afflalo (left calf strain) is active and will start in his first action since Jan. 27 against Detroit. Afflalo missed Orlando’s last six games; four with the calf injury and two because of personal reasons. “Arron is 100 percent healthy and good to go,” Magic coach Jacque Vaughn said. “It’s up to me to make sure I use him in the right way tonight.”
  • Out for Orlando are shooting guard J.J. Redick (right shoulder soreness), small forward Hedo Turkoglu (flu), power forward Glen “Big Baby” Davis (left foot fracture), and small forward Al Harrington (right knee surgery). Redick worked out before the game, but was ruled out for the third straight contest, while Turkoglu will miss his second game in a row.
  • The Magic has lost a season-high 11 straight games, last winning on Jan. 16 against Indiana. Orlando’s starters are point guard Jameer Nelson, Afflalo, small forward Maurice Harkless, power forward Andrew Nicholson, and center Nikola Vucevic.
  • Orlando has won 10 straight games over the Cavaliers, including four in a row at Quicken Loans Arena. Cleveland’s last victory in the series came on Feb. 11, 2010, which was LeBron James’ final season with the franchise.
  • The Cavaliers’ inactives are center Anderson Varejao (season-ending right knee surgery) and point guard Josh Selby (NBA D-League assignment with Canton Charge).
  • Incoming NBA commissioner Adam Silver spoke with select Cavaliers season ticket holders before the game, but did not meet with the media.

Very small first quarter bet on Cleveland minus 2. Very hard game for me to understand. Orlando gets some players back tonight. They have been really bad away in first quarters and could see them much more interested in Portland at home with this being nothing much to them. Cleveland coming off major blowout of Bobcats is suspect espcially with Denver coming in tomorrow on a major run. Game is just too hard. Just trying to steal a little on a small bet here with some edges.
Hoping for Washington but Washington vs team that beat them in Washington tend has been spread to the world. Somewhat interested in Bulls.

ive been saying to my friends for a while that Kris Humphries can be a very good role player but this front court is too crowded for him to have the minutes available to be productive... its best for the nets to trade him away

Andre Drummond has been diagnosed with a fractured tailbone and will miss the next 4-6 weeks.

The official medical term is a stress fracture in the fifth lumbar vertebrae. Drummond will not need surgery, but the Pistons are sure to exercise caution with their highly-talented rookie. If he missed the full six weeks, Drummond will return for the final 13 games of the season. Most fantasy owners need to move to a healthier option right now.

Already made small play on bulls and smaller play bulls ML

Small lean to Nets but will likely lay off. Way too much Washington love and it took a terrible shooting effort by NJ and a wonderful 4q display from Kobe for the Lakers to be the 1st "losing" team to defeat the Nets. It's just not a smart angle win or lose to fade a team that thrives in beating up on lower competition.

Hippo post apparently did not go through.

ATS: 119-85-6 (+38.0)
OU: 65-57-2 (+1.0)
ML dogs: 4-8 (+2.05)

Grizzlies

Teams that beat another team twice already in the same season are 50-11 SU (-11 ppg) and 38-21-2 ATS in a rematch game after a road loss, when they are playing as a home favorite since the 1995 season. Teams coming off of two games where they lost by double digits ATS are 16-66 SU (-8.5 ppg) and 34-47-1 ATS when playing on the road as a dog in a conference game since the 2009 season. Teams playing at home after a double digit ATS loss are 16-8 SU and ATS when playing against an opponent off a double digit ATS loss this season (this trend is also active on Charlotte tonight). If you add in that the home team is favored, they are 15-2 SU (+8.2 ppg) and 13-4 ATS this season.

Teams playing on the road as a dog of 6 or less (average line +3.7) are 1-10 SU (-8.5 ppg) and ATS this season when both they and their opponent are coming off double digit ATS losses. This season, teams coming off two double digit ATS losses are 16-4 SU (+8.2 ppg) and 14-6 ATS when playing as a home favorite.

The Grizzlies have won the last eight meetings between these teams. The Grizzlies are 9-2 SU (+7.8) and 8-3 ATS in their last eleven as a home favorite coming off a double digit loss. As a home favorite of 5 or less (average line -3.3), the Grizzlies are 12-2 SU and 11-3 ATS since last season.

"It seemed like we didn't have no emotion in the game," Grizzlies guard Tony Allen said. "There was not grittiness to it. Once they made plays, we put our heads down. We didn't have that mindset to seek and destroy. … I don't know why we're not fighting. But it all starts on the defensive end."

The Warriors are coming off two run and gun games, with some travel issues in the middle. They admitted being exhausted after the Thunder game. Although they had a day off, teams playing their third in four days this season are 18-28 ATS and 16-29-1 O/U. The Grizzlies are 3-11 O/U as a home favorite facing a team that gave up over 100 points in their last two games.

Bulls

Teams playing in their fifth road game against a non-conference opponent on no rest when their next game is at home are 13-11 SU (0.6) and 16-8 ATS when playing as a dog of 7 or less (average line +4.1) since the 2005 season. As a dog of any number, these teams are 38-23-1 ATS since the 2005 season.

The Bulls are 11-4 SU and 13-2 ATS in their last 15 after a game in which they allowed their opponent to score 15+ more than expected. As a dog in this situation, they are 3-2 SU and 5-0 ATS. The Jazz are 3-9 ATS in their last twelve as a home favorite after a home win in which they covered the spread.

Against the Nuggets last night, the Bulls allowed the most points under Tom Thibodeau and suffered the largest margin of defeat in his tenure.

"I don't think Coach is the only one who's hot right now," Noah said. "Everybody's hot. It's an embarrassing loss.”

I expect the Bulls will give their best effort tonight in Utah, and their best effort should be better than what the Jazz have to give. Against a team that is not good at guarding the paint, hopefully Boozer and Noah can regain their rhythm tonight. In their last nine, the Bulls are 5-4 SU and 7-2 ATS after two road losses where they failed to cover the spread when playing as a road dog. Under Thibodeau, the Bulls are 11-9 SU as a road dog after a game in which they failed to cover the spread.

Grizzlies -3
Bulls +4
Bulls ML +155
Bobcats +6.5
Bulls-Jazz UNDER 185
Hornets-Hawks UNDER 194
Warriors-Grizzlies UNDER 191

Good luck...

Glad I laid off the Nets. That team is toast. Congrats at putting together a 1 and done playoff bottom feeder for the next 5 years Russian playboy.

The hornets are destroying any chance Rivers has to succeed by putting him out there when he's clearly not ready. Probably the worst +/- in the league. I am guessing they would be much closer to .500 if they just never played him... and he is not improving.

Yup. Refs just wanted to keep the game close. Can't have two blowouts on national television. It's bad for business. Obviously.

Amazing how the clippers have everyone back and still lose to an undermanned Miami team. I'm shocked. Not really.
