This thing about the big games is what convinced my local handicapping friend (who went to SMU with Chip Brown and has been speaking with Chip regularly about SMU and UT) that Clemson would probably win in Charlotte. But is the "big game" thing really true anymore? We have six players on the roster who were on the last playoff team in 2020, including one (the punter) who was on the team in 2019. Two of these six actually played in the 2020 playoff. The six include starting safety RJ Mickens, starting DT Damonte Capehart, 2nd-string DT Tre Williams (played in 2020 playoff), OL Trent Howard (one of the top 7 OL this year but now injured and OFS), 2nd-string safety Tyler Venables (played in 2020 playoff), and starting punter Aidan Swanson.
Among the coaches, Dabo obviously has been through all of Clemson's big games in the playoff era. CB coach Mike Reed joined the staff in 2013, safety coach Mickey Conn joined in 2017, and the OL coach (Matt Luke) went through the playoffs to a championship with UGA in 2021. DE coach Chris Rumph was DL coach at Alabama for the 2011 and 2012 championship seasons.
