Championship Week What Have We Learned

Not sure how impressive Georgia or Texas Tech truly was given the overall quality (BYU) or current form (Bama) of their opponent.

I never thought we were a championship caliber team (next year is our year I think), but as beat up as we are, I’m not sure we can win a game in the playoffs if our training staff doesn’t perform some magic. And Ty’s injury can’t really explain all of his regression. I was excited when we hired Grubb, but I’m pretty underwhelmed looking back. I know he inherited some issues, but you gotta figure it out by game 13, injuries or not

- Bill Snyder (justifiably) gets credit for the best coaching / program turnaround in CFB history. But if he is 1A then Cignetti is 1B. When he inherited the program IU had the most all-time losses in college football history. Prior to last night it had lost to OSU 29 times in a row. Ronald Reagan was the president. When we used to say "Indiana Football" we used to say "Guessing IU can't wait until basketball season." Not anymore. Cignetti is making, what, $10MM / year. You could pay him $25MM and not blink in saying it made sense. Think about what a doormat that thing was a couple years ago. Think about what it's doing now.
- The IU win last night wasn't a facade. It was more physical and simply outplayed OSU. Put a Michigan or Texas or other helmet on that team and we're easily talking about it being the best team in the sport this season Yeah, it's still tough to say that IU is that. But it's really damn good.
- OSU threw two deep balls last night. One was to Jeremiah Smith and he was open by 10 yards and it went for 52. Still wondering Hartline didn't try stretching the field more often. Damn sure wouldn't have hurt to try.
- Defensive linemen, quit liining up in the neutral zone. It's the dumbest penalty in football.
- Offensive linemen, all of you, learn to react and draw a penalty for a guy that jumps into the neutral zone. It's a simple 5 yards.
- Regardless of what the criteria is, we can't have James Madison in the tournament. That's a joke.

How is James Madison being in a joke? They beat Liberty and Troy!

Agree that cignetti is very good. Just remember he brought the entire JMU team (undefeated) to Indiana. He did indeed build the JMU squad, but he did not rebuild the Indiana team. Not slightning him in the least. Just giving context.

I learned that if I had the futures bets on Virginia that so many of you in here did, I'd still be curled up in a ball on the floor this morning. I'm crushed for you guys and VC. Beyond brutal.
Part of me thinks we sold our soul for that college basketball natty lol but if that were true then Bostonians would each have 20 souls and be missing 14 of them. The reality is that we weren't such a good team -- so many crazy close wins and a schedule that dodged Miami, Pitt, Clemson, and got the Noles at home (FSU sucked on the road). Still a great show of progress for this program. Duke had a high ceiling -- they beat the NC State and Wake teams, by combined 29 points, that beat us and played much looser that night like a team that had nothing to lose.

Fair point, indeed.

How did he assemble such a talented roster at JMU?
