CFP Who Gets In Discussion

I used to be a lot more sympathetic toward fans of schools who argue that their team was excluded from the CFP because it‘s not a big enough “name” or “brand,” or whatever. We‘re hearing this especially with BYU now.

Then this happened:

Now I think that a team like BYU, who got blown out by Texas Tech btw, wouldn‘t even be in the playoff conversation if they were an SEC school and had a schedule like Georgia‘s.

So, Roll Tide. Go Irish.

What's funny is BYU is one of the biggest brand names in college athletics and STILL has their own channel even if not for exclusive sporting rights.

Gotta have the Irish in because they beat Miami head-to-head. I mean, that's why you play the games?? It's so obvious and undeniable that they earned it over Miami on the football field!

I wish the CFP would adopt a basketball-esque rating system like NET so we could have Quad 1-4 type ratings instead of a pretty arbitrary top 25. I didn't watch, but I heard that Vanderbilt hurt their resume by beating Tennessee so bad that the Vols fell out of the rankings. What are we even doing here? Now, I get that maybe Tenn was overranked, but the thought that by winning a game you hurt your own resume is stupid. Same for them giving Notre Dame more credit for a "good" loss against Miami, than the Canes get for actually beating ND.

Also, if you're the committee, just do the right thing first so you don't have to correct it and then make up some BS answer as to why. Alabama should have never been behind Notre Dame. Saying it was because of a lack of a run game was dumb, but then saying Alabama moved ahead because they went for it on 4th down is just as dumb. Just say you either misranked them to begin with, or just say that the regular season champion of the SEC should be ahead.

Sure but they got dominated by Florida. If we’re splitting hairs I think a bad loss to a corpse has to count.
I don't mind bad losses being a big part of a resume, but I think good wins should count more. If you have no good wins, but no bad losses, is that better than a team that has a great win or two, but one bad loss? I don't know, but this committee sure talks about bad losses way more than good wins

Texas is dropping the Ohio State game for next year and going to schedule a chump team like Wisconsin, East Carolina. Florida State or Chattanooga instead. Why risk the loss and then have to be near perfect in the SEC?

Every conference champ should get in. I have no problem with Tulane or North Texas getting in over Texas.

Committee has OU ahead of Bama with identical records but Miami behind ND.

Miami's sin? They beat ND the first game of the season.

OU's luck? beat Bama late in the season or they would be behind them, too!

So then you don’t think Bama should get in?
Great question. If the loss to FSU is not considered a corpse loss then what is?

Is Bama one of the 12 best teams in the country? without a doubt.

But if we are splitting hairs we should look at both wins and losses.

Bama's win at Georgia more than makes up for the bad loss to FSU.

And Texas's wins over OU and A&M more than make up for the Florida loss.

And the only reason a team like Texas is ranked as high as they are is because they started at #1. Had they started at #20 they never sniff anywhere near here. The game is still rigged in the preseason to a degree.
VK I love that you are a tex-ass I mean TEXAS fan but you are very fair and objective.

I try to be the same about OU.

If we play the way we did vs LSU, we are out in the first round.

In fairness, Texas was completely out of the rankings at one point, but yes, starting position generally artificially inflates a team's later ranking

Fair point, however I give more leniency to a week 1 loss. I don’t dock Texas at all for their loss at tOSU.
If Texas were a two-loss school, I think committee members would find it radically easier to include them. They're going to make teams not want to schedule teams like Ohio State now

Bro I don't feel like texas got dominated in the swamp. That's a tough place to play and they have good players, better than their record imo. Texas lost by 8. The same florida squad only lost to Georgia by 4 in Jacksonville and by 10 in Oxford to an excellent Ole miss edition.

Texas's struggles at miss st and Kentucky concerned me more.

I'm so glad I haven't watched any of these shows on Tuesday.

This is an issue until we see schedules that are similar across the board.

Example

9 conference games
2 vs power 4 schools
1 vs non power 4.

100% Kyle.

Please, no rankings to start the year.

This would help A LOT.

I haven't either, I'm just going by what I see on our message boards and Twitter, so I may be misquoting them. But probably not. They are idiots and their idiot useful mouthpiece Heather Dinich is even worse

Stupid idea. Apparently they reached out to Utah. Kind of hard to prep for an away game on a few days notice. Vandy sounds like a bunch of whiny bitches right now.

Dunno in what world they think they have any damn case when ya would think they have to be behind Texas but I suppose Irish/canes disproves H2H mattering. Irish kinda disprove lot of things like maybe quality wins mattering, but guess they do prove brand is everything.

H2H matters if recent. OU over Bama.

Miami over ND happened week 1.

Great. Tank week 1 to create a narrative of great improvement
I am not saying they should risk it, Mate..........but Bama lost to FSU week one and the Noles turned out terrible but at least ND lost a close game at what is appearing to be a pretty sold Canes squad?

Yup. Head to head matters any time
It should but we know it doesn't.

1993 ND beat FSU early in the season but then ND lost to BC in November.

FSU went to the Orange Bowl to play Nebraska for the de facto Natty.

The argument was that FSU's lost was at ND, a highly ranked team, while ND lost at home to BC, an average team and I believe it may have been right after the ND win over FSU.

I'm just saying that the earlier the loss, the better it is for the team.

See tOSU circa 2014 i think vs VaTech at home? or maybe 2016? then they ran the table?

True but Miami still won.
I am with you, Bud.

I am just saying that there are plenty of examples in history where one school beat another H2H and both finished with identical records but the winner of the H2H was ranked lower.

It has been an argument in CFB for at least the 40 years I have been following (1986 till now)

Without a doubt the earlier the loss the better but when head to head comes into it whoever won should get the nod.

What if the winner of the H2H had a much weaker SOS and SOR than the team they beat?

Should we not also look at where the game was played and which team had the better wins when the season ended?

I'm personally not a big H2H guy if the win/loss came at home. If you win on the road, and take, it that's huge.
