Well the sign crowd showed up, even though Mizzou didnt ! I had a HUGE bet on Texas-4, so I was Happy. NOT happy? Besides MIzzou,LOL, I dont see the Wazzu flag…guess that guy had go witness the cougs get waxed by USC 69-0. TWO weeks to go before the election, and no signs about McCain, or the big eared guy , and this was TEXAS ! no Erin Andrews either..guess she did get married…

College Gameday: Missouri at Texas

from Tv Tan Line by scotty

Gameday, the University, whomever made a great decision to place the Gameday setup infront of the tower on the 6-pack. Better yet there was some strong to quite-strong signage from the South Mall today.

Best (non-ticket) Sign seen:

* 2 chases 1 Cup

1310 The Ticket Signs:
When Gameday comes to Texas the Ticket P1s are sure to show up. Basically these are inside jokes from P1s to P1s.

* "I \m/ Corso's Merkin"

* "Fat Joe Left Atlantic"

* "Where's Greggo?"

* Another "Fat Joe Left Atlantic"

Scenes and signs from 'GameDay'

from Bevo Beat

A couple thousand people filled UT’s South Mall this morning for ESPN’s two-hour pregame show, “College GameDay.” Much to the delight of the mostly burnt-orange crowd, analyst Lee Corso ended the show by donning an oversized Bevo head as he picked Texas to beat Missouri tonight.

As always for a ‘GameDay’ stop, one of the high points was seeing all the clever signs. Among the ones we saw:
Pro-Longhorn signs
THE ONLY GOOD TIGER PLAYS GOLF
OSACKPO
SERVIN’ ‘EM MISSERY SINCE 1896
OKLAHOMA STATE … REALLY?
McCOY IS THE NEXT JESUS (we don’t think Colt would appreciate that one)
GOD HATES MISSOURI (accompanied by a Tiger on a crucifix. We didn’t say these were tasteful.)
Pro-Will Muschamp signs (there were a bunch):
MUSCHAMP FOR SECRETARY OF DEFENSE
MUSCHAMP FOR PRES.
CHUCK NORRIS CHECKS HIS CLOSET FOR WILL MUSCHAMP BEFORE HE GOES TO BED
SORRY CLEMSON, MUSCHAMP BLEEDS ORANGE (sign writer might want to check out Clemson’s school colors).
Pro-Missouri signs
BEVO. IT’S WHAT’S FOR DINNER
WARREN BUFFETT ASKS CHASE DANIEL FOR FINANCIAL ADVICE
Anti-ESPN signs
KIRK DRINKS APPLETINIS
LEE’S WIFE ALSO SAYS NOT SO FAST
GET BIG & RICH OUT OF MY CI-TAAAY

They won't be at Okie Lite/Texas, although it will be BCS #1 vs. #5.

My best bet is that they will be at UGA v. LSU.

The first BCS rankings are released, and to no one's surprise, Colt McCoy and Texas are No. 1. Not only do they have the top spot, but it's unanimous across the board. Check out the real top 25 rankings.

Game Official Takes Down South Carolina Quarterback Stephen Garcia

We give him a seven on the artistic score, but an ugly five on technical merit. That tackle was way too high, go for the legs man! Pretty self explanatory stuff here, but yet so bafflingly weird. For reasons unknown, an official in last night's incredibly tense and tight game between South Carolina and LSU appeared to strike South Carolina quarterback Stephen Garcia.

Garcia was scrambling from the pocket and the official had turned to watch him, then went into some sort of strange stance before lunging into him with his right arm, knocking Garcia down and ending the play. Both actors appeared to shrug the moment off, but honestly what was that official thinking?

Video after the jump.

Perhaps he's a former player and simply had one of those flashbacks we always hear about with war veterans and relived an old football moment? Or maybe Stephen Garcia simply offends him. Lord knows Garcia's had a few run-ins with other authorities in his brief college career.

Most South Carolina fans seem to be avoiding conspiracy talk, but one did note the official's potential as a linebacker recruit.

The ref is a 3 star. 6'1" 210 lbs. A little slow but he has us in his top five right now. Too bad we are full a LB this year!

Well played.

At a wedding last night and Austin and we laughed at the possibility of GameDay in Lubbock. Laughing that it will be the biggest thing to hit Lubbock ever, that they may have to sleep in the bus because there's not enough hotel rooms, and laughing that it may be the drunkest crowd they've ever seen...even at 9 am.

You’ve been there.
The ref misses a blatant pass interference. Even after 8-9 beers you know a penalty.
If only you had your very own flag to throw.
Enter Boston College student (and possibly this YouTube user) responsible for this moment Saturday night against Virginia Tech.
The videographer report:
A fan takes matters into his own hands when the referee decides not to call pass interference. Guess who it was?
Flag was made from a cut up superfan shirt, wieghted with pennies and tied with a thin strip of duct tape.
The announcers proceed to talk about it for over two minutes, on national TV.

Very funny. What happens with that flag hits player in the face taking out one of his eyes? Orlando Brown, anyone.
We cannot condone such behavior even though Bob Davie seems to.

PSU Review: Michigan

from The Nittany Line by Galen
TNL said: 42-10 (PSU)
Actual Score: 46-17 (PSU)
So it turned out close to what I thought but I never thought Michigan would put up more than 10 points but Penn State's defense had a hard time stopping the ground game. I have to be honest, I didn't watch from the end of the first quarter till about half way through the third because I couldn't take it. I could not sit there and watch Penn State lose to a team as horrible as Michigan. I could not sit there and watch Michigan (a team that came in worst in the nation in turnover ratio) bring their fucking 'A' game against Penn State… AGAIN. I walked away from the tailgate and basically just walked around. If you were in the parking lot during the game and saw a very perturbed, irritated person walking around aimlessly and mumbling to himself it was probably me. Let me just say this, if they play like that at Ohio State next Saturday they will get their asses handed to them on a plate. If you thought stopping Brandon Minor (125 yards) and Steven Threet (62 yards) from running the ball was tough wait till they have to stop someone good like say…. Terrelle Pryor and Beanie Wells.

Offense

Two words: Evan Royster. Royster ran for 176 yards on 18 carries for an eye-popping 9.7 yards per carry. He broke tackles all day and his 44 yard touchdown run in the first stopped the bleeding as Michigan jumped out to a 10-0 lead. Daryll Clark had an average day only throwing for 171 yards but he didn't get sacked and he didn't throw any Int's so we'll take it. Michigan's D couldn't contain Deon Butler, he had a great day catching 8 for 105 yards.

Defense

Looking at the stats, one would think that the defense had a great day; they held Michigan to 89 yards passing and to 291 total yards but this was a horrible effort. They gave up 202 yards on the ground and Michigan exposed Penn State by going with a no-huddle which seemed to confuse them. I don't know why it took PSU so long to make adjustments but by the time they started taking control of the game Michigan had 17 points. Like I said, this is Michigan, one of the worst offenses in the Big Ten; if Penn State played Ohio State Saturday they would have been down by 4 or 5 scores. Penn State will have to do a much better job if they want to win in Columbus.

Special Teams

Kevin Kelly was 3 of 4 but his lone miss was at the most inopportune time. It was a 45 yarder with 6:00 to go in the second that would have given Penn State some momentum. Jeremy Boone actually outkicked Zoltan Mesko averaging 44.7 yards per punt with one inside the 20. Chaz Powell had a 43 yard kickoff return and the coverage team did their part although Michigan doesn't really scare anybody in the return department.

Overall

It was a 29 point win but it was ugly at the start. If Penn State wants to be in the discussion for a MNC they will have to play much better than they did Saturday. Now they get the toughest game on their schedule when they travel to Columbus to take on an Ohio State team that just got done dismantling a very good Michigan State team. If they play sloppy defense like they did against Michigan the OSU game will be over before halftime. I'm officially in the 'scared as Hell' department.

Tommy Bowden to be next coach at Texas A&M?

from Fanblogs.com by Kevin Donahue
Here's a delicious rumor for you....
Word out of Dallas says a small but potentially vocal booster block is pushing for Texas A&M to fire Mike Sherman as head coach of the Aggies.
Sherman, who was expected to have a strong & talented coaching staff, has been a disappointment in his first season in College Station. Just 2-5 on the season (0-3 Big XII), there is a legitimate question as to if he can even tie Coach Fran's worst season (4-8) at Texas A&M.
Jerome Soloman of the Houston Chronicle rattles off the state of the Texas A&M football under Sherman.
After Saturday’s 43-25 loss to Texas Tech, Jeff Sagarin’s computer has A&M’s résumé rated 110th in the country. According to Sagarin’s calculations, the Aggies have performed better than only two BCS-conference schools — No. 117 Washington and No. 120 Syracuse — and been outperformed by a host of lower-level Division I schools and even 12 Football Championship Subdivision (formerly I-AA) squads. To break it down a little further: Not only is A&M ranked below Southern Cal, it is behind Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo. Ranking below Louisiana State is acceptable; being behind Louisiana-Lafayette is not. Trailing Florida State is OK, but looking up to Florida International is pathetic. Let’s not even get into the embarrassment of being rated behind William and Mary.
Breaking down the Aggies on both sides of the ball reveals a poor team that is playing nowhere near the Big XII pre-season number five expectations set for it.
Overall, the Aggies rank #101 nationwide in total defense and #76 in total offense through their first six games (that's without the pitiful performance against Texas Tech - where the Aggies gave up 561 yards on defense and managed just 6 of 14 third down conversions with three turnovers on offense).
WIthout the Texas Tech debacle factored in, the Aggies are the worst (or one of the worst) in nearly every statistical category in the Big XII:
#12 of 12 in Turnover Margin
#10 of 12 in Total Offense
#11 of 12 in Scoring Offense
#10 of 12 in Rushing Offense
#10 of 12 in Total Defense
#12 of 12 in Scoring Defense
#12 of 12 in Rushing Defense
#9 of 12 in Net Punting
#10 of 12 in Punt Returns
#11 of 12 in Kickoff Returns

It appears certain that Texas A&M will lose five games at Kyle Field this season for the first time... ever, and it has the boosters talking.

And who is this small booster block discussing? Former Clemson Tigers head coach Tommy Bowden.
Despite his mid-season resignation at Clemson, there's no disputing Bowden's record as head coach at Tulane and Clemson. Bowden's Green Wave went 12–0 and achieved a top-10 final ranking in both polls in 1998, before being hired as head coach at Clemson.
With the exception of a self-imposed bowl-game ban in 2004, Bowden's teams went to bowl games in every season during his tenure - eight times in nine years.
Bowden rebuilt Clemson into a consistent top-twenty team year-in and year-out, and he demonstrated a great ability to rally the booster base for fundraising. Bowden's staff was filled with strong recruiters and he consistently out-recruited SEC and ACC teams in the skill positions.
Bowden set Clemson records for the highest scoring season, second highest scoring season, third highest scoring season and fourth highest scoring season in team history.
And - perhaps most importantly - Bowden showed that he could beat Clemson's biggest rivals, going 7-1 against South Carolina and winning three straight against FSU.
At age 54, Bowden seems to have the passion and window of opportunity to lead a team for the next ten plus years. He almost left Clemson last season to take the position at Arkansas but opted to accept a contract extension that kept him at CU.
Having built a winner at the state's smaller public university with a strong military tradition, he understands the unique character that schools like Clemson and Texas A&M have to offer recruits.
Again... this appears to be just a well-placed rumor - not quite message board fodder - but a rumor nonetheless.
Tommy Bowden as head coach at Texas A&M... what say you??

UT Students ‘Bring It’ For College GameDay Visit

A week ago the people of Dallas failed to impress the blogging community with its sign making abilities.
That wasn’t an issue this weekend in Austin.
Students came to Saturday’s show prepared to make fun of a fat QB (Chase Daniel), Lee Corso’s merkin and Kirk’s Hollywood good looks.
Our man on the ground, Tree’s Trunk, was there because it’s his job and returned with these photos.
GameDay this week: Columbus, for the Penn State invasion.

See, the UT ladies can’t resist Hollywood Herbstreit.

GameDay Signs - Austin, Texas

October 19th, 2008 by cgb · 4 Comments

Is this the best sign we’ve seen all year? I think so.

Chase Daniel has a FUPA becomes a lot funnier once you know what a FUPA is.

Any reference to Lee Corso’s merkin warms me up like a nice glass of Jameson Irish Whiskey

First Fulmer is eating signs and now Chase is taking bites out of signs.

Lou Holtz still wets the bed too.

Clemson is this year’s Michigan and Chunk Daniel likes to do the truffle shuffle.

He likes them because they a tasty not because he is fairy!

Great work to everyone who made signs. The Texas signs definitely place in my top 3 of the year, although no one stepped up and answered the GameDay Challenge.

Nebraska's Newfound Offensive Identity

from Big Red Network
During Nebraska's win over Iowa State, we say how playing to the strength of the Huskers offensive personnel led Offensive coordinator to switch primarily to a spread-based attack. Doing so had major implications for all aspects of the Husker offense, not just the passing attack. The run game benefited too. While it is pretty far from the style of running many NU fans are used to seeing, it can be very effective.
Formation Matters
So, when people say the "spread offense" that doesn't just mean one particular thing. If you've watched much Big 12 football this season, you've probably noticed that many teams run many different kinds of "spread" offense. Some are heavy with the run, utilizing the zone read option game. Others are almost entirely a passing attack. What does the spread mean for Nebraska. In terms of play calls, it means balance. The Huskers personnel are such that they can both run and throw out of many spread formations.
What are the common formations? Against ISU it meant mostly one back sets and a lot more shotgun snaps. You saw a lot of 4 wide receiver sets, and occasionally 5 wide with no backs. It even includes a gimmick set where Marlon Lucky takes the direct snap (the "Joker" formation). The 4 wide sets could cover the width of the field, or they could be tight, with two wide receivers near each other on each side of the line ("Eagle" formation). That doesn't mean the tight end is going away. Nebraska would often line up with a tight end on the field. NU often will line up with two wide receivers, one on each side - spread almost to the sideline - with two tight ends and one back. In this set, it was exclusively running and play action passes, by the way. There was also a good mix weakside/strongside sets - two and three wide receivers won side, with a tight end on the other. Only twice did I see NU go "heavy" and have 2 tight ends and a fullback in front of the running back. Both times were in short yardage situations. So, as you can tell from (not all inclusive) listing of formations and personnel, NU is very multiple in how they can "spread" the field.
Play To Your Strengths
Okay, so if that is what our offensive identity is. The next question is ...why? Why does this work for the 2008 Huskers. Plain and simple, it plays to NU's strengths - a talented and physical wide receiving corps, a pass blocking line, a rather short quarterback with great ability to throw on the move, and backs suited to make one cut an play in space.
Nebraska's offense is led by its wide receivers. Strange as it sounds, it is true. From Nate Swift making so many plays Todd Peterson's very steady play, to Meno Holt's ability to make a tough grab and Niles Paul being a physical beast, the wide receivers lead the way. Going to the spread puts them in favorable 1-on-1 match ups and lets them go make a play. They are also NU's most effective blocking unit. In both the perimeter run game and the outside screen game, Nebraska has discovered a way to play "ball control" with the pass. The Husker pass catchers also hit, and it really gets in the heads of opposing defensive backs.
The Husker line is build to pass protect. I know it bothers some (myself included) to say that is who we are, but it's true. We saw a very cohesive offensive line unit on Saturday, in no small part because they put their best pass protectors, Javario Burkes and Keith Williams on the left side of the line and let them stay in there a gel with the other regular starters.
The Husker version of the spread includes a lot of quarterback movement. This is great because Joe Ganz is better able to see and make reads, and he is uncannily accurate when throwing on the move. We often saw designed quarterback movement on Saturday, with Ganz running in line with the action of his receivers and delivering a perfect strike. He can see them, and it is a nice pitch and catch. Moving Ganz also makes it easier to protect him, and allows him to only have to read one half of the field. Finally, it puts continued pressure on the perimeter of the defense.
So, What About The Running Game?
Nebraska has also found a sudden commitment to the running game. They trusted the run game when they were backed up. They ran the ball well on early down and to convert short third downs. They used the run game to kill the clock and end the game. Here's the thing...it just is not the kind of running game we are used to seeing at NU.
This isn't the triple option. Heck, it isn't even the "West Coast" offense, which often employs a fullback and multiple tight ends. The Huskers use zone read option to let their back get to the perimeter, make one cut, and get up the field. The Husker backs - Castile included - appear much more comfortable with this style of run than running between the tackles.
Using this sort of perimeter running attack lets the Husker wide receivers be their physical selves, while allowing the Husker linemen to use zone blocking rules to engage defenders at all levels. It's what NU is built to do. It should be noted that the short pass games (swing routes to backs, quick screens to wide receivers) are almost a defacto run game, too. They are short, safe throws that are designed to control the ball. In running the ball, the Huskers are still very "right handed", for good reason. Matt Slauson and Lydon Murtha are the most effective run blocking linemen, and line up on the right side.
None of these means that the Huskers are totally incapable of lining up with two tight ends and a fullback and trying to get a tough yard. They did that on Saturday, too. But, it is not their area of strength. The main Husker tight ends - Mike McNeil and Dreu Young - are versatile players but not the greatest in-line blockers yet. Frankly the Huskers don't really have a fullback right now. Blasphemy, I know. (Remember this off season concern?) Past recruiting caused the issue (Hello...Millard product Jake Behrens plays for CU!), and future recruiting is addressing it (Two scholarship FBs in this class alone). But for now tight End Hunter Teafatiller lines up at fullback when a dose of weight is needed.
While this is not the kind of running or ball control Husker fans are accustomed to, there was no denying its effectiveness on Saturday. And, as it plays to NU's strengths and gets their best players on the field - I'm all for it.
Almost the entire Big 12 is running some version of the "spread" these days. Now, NU officially is too.

Underdog Money Lines Wk 9

from underdogsofwar.com by TheGarfather
YTD: 12-21, +20.85 units
Week 8: 1-3, -1.90 units
I cannot speak either generally or specifically to what transpired yesterday as I have only seen the final scores and haven’t looked at more than a half-dozen boxers and p-b-p’s, but the results speak for themselves: 7-45, -3370 as a whole, provided you count BYU, Clemson, and FAU as dogs. Not very impressive! SMU was in the ball park, they had a large enough lead and gave it all back with a few minutes to go. No doubt, had I been watching I would have been totally irate. But its worth remembering a few things: 1) we saw a week ago that a 17-pt lead isn’t safe against Houston so I knew that going in 2) I won earlier in the year because CSU intercepted Houston in the red-zone, this time late in the RZ the Cougars scored, so those cancel out 3) SMU was out-gained by over a 100 yards and only ever had a lead because of huge mistakes by UH in terms of untimely penalties and turnovers 4) 50% of games in CUSA are decided this exact way, with a late comeback (usually by the chalk). Conclusion: tough beat, but a fair result, clearly the better team won, still a fine play at 4:1 but would have liked 5:1. Arkansas State I’m a little more peeved about. They can run the ball and play defense (two things SMU is horrible at doing) so I would like to think they could hold a lead. They were totally self-destructive for the most part. A 14-yd punt, an interception in the RZ, settling for field goals, constant stupid penalties, and a partidge in a pear tree. I actually think they beat ULL 6 or 7 out of every ten times played, but evidently not yesterday.
MiamiOH at 370 was by far the biggest casher and I was considering them, but they would have been 4th in line and so I would have only come free and clear by +70 if I had added all the losers in front of them. My next three struck out again, so even though the values are down I continue to make good reads with regards to how tight and how loose I ought to be.
Spreads were great news, you might see me add a few more as the season goes on, at least on weeks when the dog choices suck. Kansas was a bit lucky. Yes the spread was 20.5 so I had some margin for error, but when you give up 700 yards of offense, lose the TOP and turnovers battles and need a backdoor covering touchdown with less than a minute to go…yeeesh, probably didn’t deserve that one, but I’m not about to give it back. Arkansas was an easy right side winner from a spread standpoint and they were semi-typical of what happened to dogs this week - just totally melting down at the end. (Army was another great example of what happened, just like Arky they forced a critical stop but then fumbled it right back on the next play.) Illinois vs. Indiana was just too easy. As for UAB/Marshall, there is a reason I don’t do totals.
Week 9 watch list: Ohio, New Mex, NC State, Wake, Pur/Min, EMU, Duke, Rice, Utah St, SMU (but really the over), Arizona State, UCLA, Kent, UVA, OSU, UGA, B Green, Toledo, Baylor, SDSU, Hawaii (if its not Kaepernick), MTSU, and ULM.

Utah's offense explodes in victory over Colorado State

from Block U by JazzyUte
Utah's offense erupted for its best performance of the season as the Utes cruised past Colorado State 49-16 Saturday afternoon. With the victory, Utah rolled to an 8-0 start for only the fourth time in school history. It also provided Utah a chance to rise in the rankings and boost their BCS hopes.
Entering the game, all eyes were on the Ute offense, which had struggled with consistency for pretty much the entire season. That changed, however, against the hapless Rams, as the Utes racked up a season-high 549 yards of total offense, much of which came on the ground. Brian Johnson, who had been steady, but far from great, had his best performance of the season as well, going 18 of 26 through the air for 185 yards and two touchdowns. However, it was quarterback Corbin Louks who stole the show, as he ran for a game-high 109 yards and two touchdowns.
While Utah's offense had its best day, the defense was solid as always. The Rams only managed to find the end zone once, on their first drive of the game, and had to settle for three field goals the rest of the way. As I thought they would, Colorado State opted to throw the ball, as Billy Farris went 19 of 33 for 166 yards. Gartrell Johnson, the leading back for the Rams, did manage to run for 95 yards on the day, slightly above his season average. But for the most part, the Colorado State offense couldn't develop much of a game, only managing 298 yards of total offense, well below their average of 351 a game.
Now Utah enters a bye week with pretty good momentum and the hardest part of their schedule left. The biggest question, of course, is whether or not the offense can continue to improve on its performance Saturday. When they do return to play in two weeks, they will face a fairly tough test with the New Mexico Lobos and this might give us a true idea of whether or not the Utes are ready to take the next step from being a good team to that great team we are all hoping to see. Right now, though, they've improved and that's the biggest thing to take away from this victory.
Finally, Utah has yet to have a letdown. This was one of the biggest concerns heading into the season, since I think most Ute fans felt Utah was capable of being a really good team, yet it was unclear if they had the consistency and discipline to make it through these types of games. Games they should not only win, but win going away. So far, the last two weeks especially, they have done just that. Because of this, they are 8-0 and rolling toward a BCS berth. But now is not the time to get complacent and hopefully the bye week will offer Utah a chance to plan accordingly for New Mexico. They'll need it.

It's The Schedule, Stupid

By Pete Fiutak
1. Over the years I've been yelled at by the mathematician types about why six computer formals that no one knows about and no one understands should be a part of the BCS formula. More often than not I've been on the side of the computers, since they're the ones that come up with the objective, impartial looks at the season, as opposed to the human pollsters who couldn't name the starting quarterback for half of the teams they're voting for. But every year about this time I get annoyed that my beloved sport is so freakin' weird when it comes to deciding a champion

While I'd like to ditch the polls, assuming we don't have a playoff system in place, I do acknowledge the history and tradition of the game and the reason the polls are so important. I just wish Joe Six Pack could understand who to root for on a given Saturday when it comes to the BCS. Actually, I just wish I knew what to look for on a given Saturday when it comes to the BCS.

It's time to ditch the computers. I'm sorry, you can throw all the mathematical theories you want to about why having six are important, the formula, the system, and the sport would be far better if you just had one simple factor counting as 1/3rd of the equation, along with the two human polls.

Strength of schedule.

It's really not that hard. If you play a good schedule, you deserve the rewards. If you put together a great record against a garbage schedule, you should pay. If we're not going to have a playoff, it's about who deserves to be playing for it all, and strength of schedule would do that.

The subjective view is already covered by the humans with 2/3rds of the equation, the pollsters can adjust the market accordingly. You don't need six computers to tell you that Missouri has played the second toughest schedule in America and that Ball State has faced the nation's sixth easiest slate.

Penn State has faced the nation's 100th toughest schedule so far. Hmmmmmm, could that be what it has been so dominant? We'll know more this week against Ohio State, but as far as the formula, don't schedule Coastal Carolina and Temple. Penn State opponents have won 38% of their games. Compare that to Oklahoma, whose opponents have won 71% of their games.

I openly admit that this is way too simplistic, but shouldn't that be the point? Shouldn't it be just that easy for all of us to follow?

Now that I've become the champion of the good schedule, to do a 180 (or a 360, as Jason Kidd would say) and discredit everything I just wrote ...

2. Do I think Ball State is better than Florida? No.

Do I think Tulsa would go unbeaten if it played in the SEC? Of course not.

Do I think Utah deserves to be in the national title discussion? Nope.

Do I think Boise State would beat Oklahoma in a rematch of the 2007 Fiesta Bowl? No way.

Do I think Ball State, Tulsa, Utah and Boise State should all be in the BCS if they go unbeaten? Sure. It might be cool.

I’m not saying any one of those four, if unbeaten, should be playing in the national championship, but it’s time to cut the charade and let the little guys know that they’re not just afterthoughts. Remember, the BCS isn’t a playoff; it’s a high-profile exhibition.

I know, I know, we’re all still scarred from the Georgia obliteration of Hawaii in the 2008 Sugar Bowl, but Boise State earned its stripes with the win over Oklahoma two years ago, and Utah already busted the BCS in the 2005 Fiesta Bowl.

Of course, to get all four teams in, assuming they all finish unbeaten, would mean that no BCS conference would get a second team in. Obviously that would never happen in a million years, Fox would never allow it, but your beef really wouldn’t be with Tulsa getting in over, say, Ohio State, or Utah getting in over Alabama. Your problem should be with a system that will automatically put in the ACC champion over the WAC champion. Your problem is with an automatic spot going to the Big East champion this season. Considering the success the Mountain West had against the Pac 10 this season, why does USC deserve to get in over Utah or TCU? (With all this said, I believe the BCS should take the top ten ranked teams, period, but that's for another argument.)

Utah is already 11th in the BCS rankings with at New Mexico, TCU, at San Diego State and BYU to play. If the Utes win out, they’ll likely move deep into the top ten and would get the automatic BCS spot. Few would complain.

Boise State is 12th with a win at Oregon on the résumé and a defense that gave up 7, 7, 3, 7, and 7 points in the five non-Duck wins. The Broncos play at San Jose State, at New Mexico State, Utah State, at Idaho, at Nevada and Fresno State. Yeah, the schedule it stinks, but again, the Broncos have earned their way in from the last performance.

Tulsa is 19th with the nation’s leading offense averaging 625 yards and 56.6 points per game. The Golden Hurricane plays UCF, at Arkansas, at Houston, Tulane and at Marshall. This is the team you'd want to see on a big stage, even if you don't know it yet.

Ball State is 20th with no one coming closer than 13 points so far, including Navy and Indiana, with Eastern Michigan, Northern Illinois, at Miami University, at Central Michigan, and Western Michigan to go before the MAC title game.

Fine, so all four teams aren’t going to finish unbeaten, I’m guessing Boise State is the only one that’ll do it, but if you’re a fan of chaos and if you’re a fan of calling out the BCS for being a hypocritical mess, then you know who to root for.

3. Colt McCoy has been a transformational figure in college football this season, executing at a higher level than any other quarterback—or player—in the country. He has been brilliant. Vince Young-brilliant. All of the attention and accolades being heaped on the junior has been warranted, especially during the recent Texas two-step versus Oklahoma and Missouri. Of course, he hasn’t been a one-man gang. McCoy’s offensive line, a mild question mark entering the season, has been almost flawless in its ability to protect the quarterback, create space for the playmakers, and get a push in short yardage.

Yeah, receivers Jordan Shipley and Quan Cosby have been dynamic. RB Chris Ogbonnaya has started coming into his own in his senior year. FB Cody Johnson has been automatic near the goal line. However, when your singing the praises of top-rated Texas, be sure to save a tune for a front wall that’s been the catalyst for the nation’s second-highest scoring offense. Back in August, only RG Cedric Dockery was listed
on the Preseason All-Big 12 Football Team. Today, few units are performing better. Dockery is joined by RT Kyle Hix, C Chris Hall, LG Charlie Tanner, and LT Adam Ulatoski to form an outstanding and stable offensive line that’s making everyone’s jobs in Austin just a little bit easier.

McCoy has been the face of Texas’ unforeseen success in 2008. Dockery, Hix, Hall, Tanner, and Ulatoski are doing their part to make sure that face remains untouched and free from black eyes.

Fearing And Figuring Out The Turtle
By Richard Cirminiello

4.
Note to self: Stop even trying to make sense of Maryland. It’s a waste of time.

Fear the turtle? Darn right I do. I fear that I’ll never get a pulse on this program. I also fear that the Terrapins will continue giving me an inferiority complex. Check this out for schizophrenic: The week before Maryland stunned Cal, it barely showed up in a loss to Middle Tennessee State. The week after upsetting then-No. 20 Clemson, it was whitewashed, 31-0, by an average Virginia squad. And just when it looks like I’ve read the Terrapin tea leaves, they go ahead and ambush Atlantic division favorite Wake Forest, 26-0. Just how good is Maryland? Well, there’s enough talent, especially at linebacker and running back, to capture a wide-open ACC. Or enough holes to completely miss a bowl game. It’s anybody’s guess where this team will be when the 2008 rollercoaster ride finally comes to a stop.

This week, the Terps get a visit from 2-5 North Carolina State, the league’s bottom-feeder. Maryland is the superior and the hotter team. In other works, be safe and take the Pack. When it comes to Ralph Friedgen’s kids, nothing in College Park makes much sense these days.

But Texas vs. Alabama Really Would Be Interesting

By Matthew Zemek

5. So, rumor has it that the BCS standings have been disclosed for the first time this season, setting off lots of debates at the water cooler about rankings and résumés.

Here's a friendly word of advice, then, as you dissect each win and compare margins of victory, conferences, and individual opponents (etc., etc.): Just wait and allow the season to play out.

If this 139-year-old sport has taught us anything, it should be exactly that: Wait. Wait for the eleventh, twelfth, and (in the Big 12 and SEC) thirteenth games to run their course before making any firm conclusions about the two best teams in college football. In this decade, only two seasons--2002 and 2005--have provided perfect pairs of undefeated teams at the end of Autumn. Under any other scenarios, identifying the two best teams is mostly a guessing game, and any honest football writer has to be honest enough to admit as much. Twelve regular-season games, with only four non-conference tilts (three in the Pac-10), just don't allow for a sufficient number of cross-conference matchups that can determine the top two teams, barring the one and only magic scenario involving two (and only two) unbeaten squads.

Why this need to wait, you say? Yes, it's partly a matter of exposing the BCS as a system that always claims to be objective and pure, but which is just as political and flawed as the other systems that have come down the pike.

With that said, the even more important reason to plead for patience at this point in the college football season is to pound home an emphasis on winning games. That's right: winning games. It sounds strange, but college football fans (and far too many pundits and writers) seem to have lost an appreciation for merely winning.

One of the reasons so many writers and talking heads buried Ohio State with an avalanche of criticism in the first half of this season is that the Buckeyes didn't win impressively. Anyone remember a certain team in 2002? Fourteen times, that team just posted a modest-looking "W," on the road to a national championship. Somehow, the Ohio State Buckeyes just won games. A simple concept, right?

But in 2008, style points are seducing far too many otherwise intelligent people. The media, on a collective level, basically booed OSU off the national stage following the loss to USC. Instead of giving the Buckeyes points for scheduling the kind of game that many SEC schools are too spineless to consider, the press threw dirt on Ohio State's grave. And even when Tressel Ball produced ugly wins such as the 16-3 triumph over Purdue, the vultures were out in force when--if they wanted to find a real underachiever in college football--they should have been reporting on Clemson, Auburn, Illinois, or another team that's falling far short of expectations. The Buckeyes have lost only one game in 2008. In the sport's most important statistical category--wins--OSU has been getting the job done. Yet, the obsession with style points has led the critics to shout down the sages.

This Saturday, guess who will be playing for the Big Ten championship against Penn State? Yeah, the same team that's had to absorb a whole lot of acidic attacks and assaults on its quality.

Ugly wins--such as the ones recently being turned out by Ohio State and also Alabama--are still far more beautiful than the prettiest losses. Come the first weekend of December, all the talk about BCS resumes will mean very little for the teams that keep on posting "Ws," ugly though they may be. Margin of victory means something when comparing two one-loss clubs. But if a team finds the mental toughness to win every week, the other comparisons quickly become secondary, peripheral, and ultimately irrelevant.

Just win, baby, and just let this season--like every other college football odyssey--to simply run its course.

Post Game Reaction: Bleh

from Bring On The Cats by Panjandrum
I'm going to make this short because I don't want to relive this game...
First of all, I don't think you can find a silver lining from this game. Yeah, the defense was better (14 points, 353 yards), but Colorado does have the worst offense in the conference. While K-State held them under their season averages for yards and points, CU outperformed their season averages for yards, and they more than doubled their average for rushing yards (114 ypg, 247 in the game). If Colorado didn't spend the majority of the game with a true freshman under center, we probably would have seen a much more potent offensive attack as well, but that's just me postulating with the power of hindsight.
While there were certain things to be happy about from a defensive standpoint, the offense was simply awful. They were outgained by Colorado, 353-349. Even worse, they only tried running the ball twenty-three times all night. Now, if the ‘Cats had trouble running the ball, it would have been understandable, but they were averaging 4.9 yards a carry. Freeman, who only carried the ball seven times, averaged 6.0 yards a carry and this included a seventeen yard touchdown run in the third quarter. This, coincidentally, happened to be the only touchdown of the night for K-State.
If you want a stat that will really blow your mind, how about this...
After the first quarter, where KSU rushed the ball ten times, they rushed the ball thirteen times through the next three quarters.
Let that sink in. In the first quarter, when KSU rushed the ball ten times against fourteen pass plays, they accumulated 133 yards of offense, and they kicked two field goals for scores. Of course, knowing this philosophy was working, they decided to go against it because our coach wanted to confuse the other team by doing exactly the opposite of WHAT WAS WORKING. That's smart (not scared) coaching right there.
I'm not even going to comment on the fact that with over a minute left to play in the first half, Prince elected to kneel on the ball...again. Now, I want to comment on this, but better judgment is preventing me from doing so. It would make this a rated "R" forum instead of the "PG-13" we currently employ. If I could repeat the profanity laced string of insults that I hurled at my television, or the text messages I exchanged with TB, it would probably make a sailor blush.
Let's just say that I wasn't pleased and leave it at that.
So, instead of rehashing all of the gory details of yesterday's game, I think the previous Fan Shot of Jim Mora's tirade summed it up nicely.
All credit to Colorado. You put a quarterback on the field that could run the football, and you confused the Hell out of our defensive players and took advantage of their ability to ignore containment. While this strategy didn't score a ton of points, it was still effective enough to win the game. Kudos.
The next several days here at BOTC will probably be pretty interesting. I haven't had a chance to talk to TB yet about what we want to do outside of our normal content, but I think he and I are both in agreement about what we'd like to see happen with the program going forward. I haven't had a discussion with EMAW about it, but I think he's probably on board too. We'll probably have a pow-wow and figure out how we want to vent our frustrations going forward without alienating those of you that stop by. I'm definitely feeling immensely pessimistic about this team going forward, and that's never fun to read, so I may tone down my frustrations. However, I think you'll continue to see some pretty harsh criticism thrown Prince's way. Maybe Krause and Wefald's way as well. Who knows?
Okay, I'm done rambling now. I haven't been able to put a coherent thought out about KSU in the last couple of days because what we're seeing on the field is anything but coherent at this point. I'm really struggling with what to think going forward, but all I can truly say for sure is that this program (and season) is a complete mess, and how we're going to get out of it remains a complete mystery.
Well, I'm calling it a night. Hopefully, tomorrow will be a better day.

BCS Realpolitik: Unlike Michigan, the computers are not impressed by Penn State

from Dr. Saturday - NCAAF - Yahoo! Sports by Matt Hinton
ept_sports_ncaaf_experts-817418552-1224465796.jpg
In a perfect world, the Doc would be given carte blanche to publicly torch the Bowl Championship Series in effigy and institute the elaborate, double-elimination battle royale of his dreams. But we live in the world we live in, so each Sunday the Doc looks at what the new BCS numbers mean for the rest of the season. Rooting interest: chaos. Always chaos. We've got a month and a half and a lot of surprises to go, here, so the least interesting thing about the year's first Official Poll of the People is who's No. 1. Or No. 2. They're exactly the same as the human polls, anyway: Texas and Alabama. They're your pole sitters.
It's much more fascinating to judge just how wildly the computer aggregates differ at this point in the year from the sum total of puny human minds. Penn State, for example, is one of the Big Three undefeated teams at the top right now, and right on Alabama's heels for the No. 2 spot in the Harris and Coaches polls (and the AP poll, too, but the writers opted out of the BCS process, the curs, and so are dead to us). To the computers, the Lions are No. 7, behind Oklahoma State and one-loss Oklahoma, Ohio State and Georgia. Not one single Official Algorithm ranks PSU higher than fifth (Anderson & Hester), and one has the Lions as low as No. 11 (Peter Wolfe). You may be impressed by all the shiny blowouts -- Penn State is schooling people by a national-best 33 points per game -- but the computers aren't allowed to take margin of victory into account.
ept_sports_ncaaf_experts-448867161-1224465823.jpg
Instead, they see an average strength of schedule (by their published calculations) somewhere in the low 90s and a "best win" over Oregon State and spit out a number that's closer to what the flesh-and-bloods think of, say, Boise State or TCU. Both of whom the computers kind of like, by the way.
Other vast chasms between human and computer opinions: Oklahoma State, No. 8 in the human polls but No. 3 according to the machines; USC, a top five team in the human polls but tenth (behind Utah and Boise State) in the computer versions, which obviously have not seen the recruiting rankings; Florida, sixth and seventh, respectively, by the humans but No. 12 by the computers, and no higher than eighth in any of them; LSU, No. 11 by the people but tied (with Northwestern) for No. 19 by the machines; South Florida, which cracks both human polls' top 15 but is way down at No. 23 in the computer polls; and Kansas, whose offensive prowess in a loss to Oklahoma didn't even knock the Jayhawks out of the humans' top 20, but who also don't appear in five of the six computer top 25s at all.
Sitting pretty. Texas has a substantial lead in every poll, and Alabama a substantial enough lead over Penn State in the computer versions, that the Horns and Tide look like they're in win-and-in mode. Even if Penn State continues its path of destruction through the Big Ten, the Big 12 and SEC have been getting lots of slobbering kisses as the strongest conferences all season and won't yield their conference champions after "Championship Weekend," when Penn State will just be watching, anyway. Replace Texas with Oklahoma State or Texas Tech if either manages to upset UT, beat the other, beat Oklahoma and run the table.
Among the one-loss teams, Oklahoma is in a dead heat with USC in the human polls and ahead of the Trojans in every single computer poll, although but the Sooners also need Texas to lose twice to avoid the curse of "didn't even win their own division." SC is set to cruise through the rest of the Pac-10, where its toughest opponent is its own inconsistent psyche, but if OU manages to win out (which means beating Texas Tech and Oklahoma State), even without winning the Big 12, the computers will still favor the Sooners, and the humans will have to make some kind of indefensible leap in logic to move the Trojans ahead with no remaining ranked teams on their schedule.
A little help? Penn State can't catch Texas or Alabama on its schedule alone and needs one of those two to lose to move into the top two. And god bless them, Ohio State is trucking along, just waiting for the Big 12 South to shake itself out. If the Buckeyes beat Penn State Saturday, and the Florida-Georgia winner in two weeks should happen to drop another one along the way, OSU is right in the mix again.
For chaos' sake. The undefeated triumverate in the Big 12 South (Texas, Oklahoma State, Texas Tech) offers plenty of opportunities to throw the entire affair into a big morass, most obviously by beating one another in an indecipherable A > B and B > C but C > A chain. If any of those three does come out of the regular season unscathed, there's always Kansas or Missouri lurking in the conference championship -- imagine coming to Dec. 7 with Texas, Oklahoma and the Texas Tech/Oklahoma State winner all with one loss to one of the other two, and none of them as conference champion, but with Oklahoma possessing the mythical "momentum." Do you dare take the Sooners over Texas? Or do you just set the Big 12 aside in favor of USC and/or whoever upsets Alabama in the SEC title game? If Oklahoma State manages to take out Texas Saturday in Austin, it's going to be like entering the Labyrinthe, only without the muppets (David Bowie, of course, will still be there).

For those who missed it, here is the clip of a late flag on a pass interference call in the second quarter. The reason it was so late? It came from the stands.

The BC boards are divided about this little incident. Some found it funny (myself included). Others found it classless. I think it was harmless, but don't want to see it become a regular occurrence at homes games.

Urrbody in this car gettin’ tipsy. Georgia defensive tackle Brandon Wood picks up a DUI and a suspension for the LSU game, earning the charge at a 3:42 a.m. traffic stop in Athens Sunday morning. Injured left tackle Vince Vance also got ticketed for a “requiring a license” when he was pulled over by police and realized he had a suspended license. The frequency of arrests in Athens is steady and petty enough to make us wonder what the ratio of cop to student is there: 2:1? 4:1? Can one go three feet without being forced to give a breathalyzer test to a uniformed officer on the sidewalk?

Monday Headlinin': Pete Carroll is too hung up on 'results,' man

from Dr. Saturday - NCAAF - Yahoo! Sports by Matt Hinton
ept_sports_ncaaf_experts-460363658-1224509516.jpg
We do not recognize your puny mortal logic. Pete Carroll is not a computer guy. And it's hard to blame him, really, when the computers in the initial BCS standings rank USC 10th -- five spots behind the Ohio State team the Trojans routed 35-3 a month ago:
“How does that happen?” USC coach Pete Carroll said Sunday, when the standings were released. “Nice system.”
When asked whether USC’s 10th-place position in the computer rankings concerned him, Carroll said: “What would I be concerned about? Do you think I’m holding my breath over winning the national championship because of the BCS? We have no control over that thing.”
Carroll did not express rage against the machines so much as bewilderment.
“I don’t even know how it works,” he said. “It’s a computer. We’re talking about it like it’s a person.
“It’s a machine, dude. I know nothing.”
Actually, coach, people are guiding the machines -- inputs and algorithms and so forth, and a baffling, human-mandated ignorance of margin of victory -- but are you suggesting we should, like, settle this on the field or something? Carroll could have come up with his own BCS algorithm on the sideline Saturday, since he had no idea how to avoid running up the score on Washington State.
Loose lips sink pundits. The first rule of modern debate is "Keep Hitler out of it," because nothing derails an argument or scratches the record faster than invoking the Führer. Lou Holtz learned that the hard way when he dropped the H-Bomb in reference to Rich Rodriguez on Friday, setting off a minor flurry of bloggy speculation, and was forced to apologize on Saturday. Obviously, he was around all day Saturday, and nothing else is expected to happen to him. Hey -- that's just Lou!
There's not much to this, specifically -- neither the reference nor the apology is even on YouTube, if that's any barometer -- except that it's the second on-air apology Holtz has been forced to make in as many weeks. One of the signs at GameDay in Austin said "Lou Hath a Potty Mouth," which isn't exactly true, since he hasn't actually used a word on-air that you can't use on-air. It's coming, though. You know it's coming. And three strikes at the axe-happy Worldwide Leader ...
Presentable in Pink. New Mexico State, inspired by Wendy Testaburger's impassioned report on breast cancer earlier in the week, pinked it up Saturday against San Jose State as the culmination of its "Tough Enough to Wear Pink" fundraising campaign, inspired by Hal Mumme's wife, June, a breast cancer survivor:
ept_sports_ncaaf_experts-120743162-1224509542.jpg
Fluffy symbolism and more hardcore check-writing didn't help the Aggies at all against the Spartans: San Jose won, 31-14, putting a major crimp in NMSU's distant bowl ambitions.
The vigil of campus police never ends. Georgia's annual cavalcade of misdemeanor traffic arrests rolled on in classic form after the Bulldogs' win over Vanderbilt, when defensive tackle Brandon Wood was arrested for DUI and injured offensive lineman Vince Vance was booked for driving with a suspended license in separate incidents.
Athens Police must have some kind of Bat/Dawg Signal that alerts them to the tiniest vehicular infraction by UGA footballers: Vance was pulled over because he "didn't stop very well at a stop sign," according to Mark Richt, while Wood, who is 21, was "parked while waiting to pick up his girlfriend and her friend" and forgot to turn his headlights lights on when he pulled out. Raise your hand if you've been there, man. Keep it up if you were suspended for Saturday's LSU game, too, and you know exactly what the kid is going through.
Quickly ... Alabama man-mountain Terrence Cody is confident he'll be back from a bad-looking knee injury Saturday. . . . Florida was livid about some media comments before its blowout over LSU. "That's good," said Urban Meyer, adding, "Let you hate fill you ..." . . . Texas is everybody's darling, for at least a week. . . . Syracuse running back Curtis Brinkley isn't sending a Christmas card to South Florida's defense. . . . And Maryland's season, back on track? Hilarious!

Game Recap: Oregon State 34, Washington 13

from Building The Dam by Jake
After watching his little brother on ESPN for much of the 2008 season, James Rodgers got some press after he sliced through the Husky defense for 3 touchdowns- 2 on the ground and one in the air. The sophomore ended up with 216 all purpose yards.
After a 45 yard field goal by Washington's Jared Ballman, Lyle faked to Quizz and went to James, and the eldest Rodgers took the ball 52 yards down the right sideline for six, giving the Beavers the lead for good.
In the second quarter, Justin Kahut was good from 37, and James took a Lyle Moevao dump pass 33 yards for another touchdowns, making our halftime score 17-6 after another Ballman field goal for the Huskies.
Jacquizz got a taste of the end zone early in the third quarter, when some short passes and decent runs by Ryan McCants set the Beavers up in the red zone. Jacquizz scored on a first and goal play at the one- his ninth touchdown of the season.
However, James wasn't done yet. He shredded the UW defense one again on a 55 yard run, making the score 31-6 and putting the game out of reach for the Huskies. Washington running back Terrance Daily (the one who got clobbered by Al Afalava earlier in the game) did have a moment of glory, as he scampered up the middle for a 59 yard touchdown. It didn't matter, as the Beavers still enjoyed a three possession lead.
For good measure, Kahut added a 23 yard field goal in the fourth, making the final score 34-13.
Lyle Moevao played exceptional in the wake of a four-interception second quarter against the Cougars. He was 18 of 22 passing for 191 yards with no interceptions.
Jaquizz rushed for 94 yards on 20 carries. We all wish that he would have gotten to 100 or to 120, but it didn't happen. He's still the leading freshman rusher in the nation.
As mentioned, James scored three touchdowns, from 55, 52, and 33 yards. The man can fly.
Sammie Stroughter had six receptions for 57 yards, and Shane Morales had 4 catches for 61 yards.
Washington quarterback Ronnie Fouch either had a good day throwing the ball, or we have problems with our secondary, as he was 17 of 32 for 276 yards. D'Andre Goodwin was the recipient of 5 of those completions- he racked up 136 yards.
For the most part, our defense stopped the Washington running game. The Huskies had 101 yards on the ground, but 59 came on one play. Take that away, and Washington runs for under 50 yards on the ground.

Updated record but no picks until later. Off to go drinking on the boat.

Stoked hitting nearly 60% YTD and may up bet size this week by 50%.

See y'all later.

Contra Costa Times: Cal left to ponder bad turn of events

from California Golden Bear Football News by Dave
Seventeen seconds. That's all it took Saturday night for Cal's game at Arizona to turn from promising to desperate. The Bears led 27-21 midway through the third quarter but then watched the Wildcats culminate a seven-play, 77-yard drive with a 1-yard touchdown run by true freshman Keola Antolin. After receiving the ensuing kickoff, Cal quarterback Nate Longshore tried to force a pass to wide receiver Verran Tucker on the sideline and the ball was intercepted by cornerback Devin Ross, who returned it 21 yards for a score.
Suddenly, the Bears found themselves down 35-27 and ultimately dropped a 42-27 decision to the Wildcats.
"I don't know what happened," Cal center Alex Mack said. "I don't really have an answer. We're up by six, we're down by one, and then we're down by eight. We may have got a little tight instead of having faith things will come together." Needing to answer back immediately to slow Arizona's momentum after the interception return, the Bears instead went three-and-out on their next possession and the Wildcats immediately put together another scoring drive. Longshore, who threw for 172 yards and two touchdowns in the first half, was just 1-for-5 on the two possessions immediately following Ross' score and ultimately gave way to Kevin Riley.
"We bogged down a little bit and I felt like we needed a spark," Cal coach Jeff Tedford said of his decision to replace Longshore. "I'm not putting this loss on Nate by any means. We were a little stagnant offensively and I felt like we needed to get something going." Tedford said the quarterback situation will continue to be competitive this week as the Bears prepare for Saturday's home game against UCLA.
No more redshirt
Because of injuries to defensive linemen Rulon Davis and Kendrick Payne and a limited Tyson Alualu, the Bears were forced to burn the redshirt year of freshman Trevor Guyton on Saturday. Guyton got a handful of snaps along Cal's depleted defensive line. Alualu, who missed practice time last week with a leg infection, got fatigued in the second half and Guyton picked up some of his snaps. "We're a bit thin on the defensive line," Cal defensive coordinator Bob Gregory said. "(Guyton) made a couple of plays and did a nice job. Tyson got a little worn down as the game went on, so that's why you saw Trevor in there a little bit, to give Tyson a spell."
No payback
The Bears entered the game with high hopes of avenging their devastating loss at Arizona in 2006. When asked if the failure to do that made Saturday's setback even more disappointing, Mack said: "I'm sick to my stomach."
Extra points
Anthony Felder's first-quarter interception was Cal's 11th pick this season. The Bears had 10 interceptions all of last season. ...… Antolin became the first running back to rush for 100 yards against the Bears this season (149). …... Cal allowed 28 points in the third quarter, the most it's given up in one quarter since 2002.

The 10 Least Intimidating Mascots

OregonDuck.jpg

By Mad Love on 10/18 at 10:00 AM
<!--Collegiate mascots embody a school's spirit. Some are mean and intimidating, but others, as Rachel Ann Moore tells us, don't quite measure up. Sorry, Oregon, but I'm simply not threatened by this Duck of yours whatsoever.
--> By Rachel Ann Moore
Love of Sports Correspondent

In the excitement of athletic competition, most sports teams choose mascots that reflect their “fighting spirit.”
Typically, these representatives are personified by warriors or predatory creatures.
But there are those schools that pick the animals or images that represent a local or regional trait. These symbols are presumed to bring that team good luck and are commonly the cutest, fuzziest and least frightening characters they could find.
It turns out there are a lot more schools than you’d think that have chosen non-threatening mascots. Here are are the Top 10 such schools in Division I.
NCAA’s Most Non-Threatening Mascots
10. Tennessee Volunteers
The actual mascot for the school is Smokey the hound dog, but their athletic teams are mainly referred to by their nickname, the Volunteers. Now give the Vols a little credit; Tennessee became known as “The Volunteer State” in the early 19th century when Andrew Jackson assembled large armies from his home state to fight American Indians, and later the British. Still, you just don’t think “soldier” when you hear the word “volunteer.”
vols.jpg

9. Nebraska Cornhuskers
A Cornhusker is one who husks corn (removes husks and leaves). The University of Nebraska was first nicknamed the Hawkeyes, now associated with the University of Iowa. They were also nicknamed the Antelopes, the Old Golden Knights, the Bug eaters and the Man-killing Mastodons (they should’ve stopped there). When Iowa dropped the name Cornhuskers, Nebraska jumped at the opportunity to take it. Whose bright idea was that?
cornhusker.jpg

8. Virginia Tech Hokies
If you don’t know what a hokie is, don’t fret; neither does Virginia Tech. As part of a spirit-yell competition, a student (class of 1896) made up the word because it was an attention-grabber. An English professor later found that the word had existed for 50 years previous and was an exclamation like “hooray,” but somehow at the university, it translated into “turkey.” That kid lucked out. What if the word meant “loser?”
hokie.jpg

7. Minnesota Golden Gophers
Gophers are the cute, fuzzy creatures I was specifically talking about before. Dress it in a football jersey and it’s even cuter than before.
goldy.jpg

6. Oregon State Beavers
In all fairness, the school didn’t choose this cuddly creature to be the fighting spirit of its sports teams. Instead, the school adopted the name after one of the university’s leading programs: engineering. And what is a dam-building beaver but a woodland engineer?
beaver.jpg

5. Maryland Terrapins
A terrapin may not be fuzzy or adorable, but it is definitely not intimidating. If you’re ever up against one, just run - or rather, walk - away. A terrapin is a turtle. It won’t catch you.
terp.jpg

4. Oregon Ducks
The mascot costume has black evil-eyebrows sewn on its face, but if you actually think about how much harm a duck can do, it’s not as frightening as the eyebrows suggest. Ducks have neither teeth nor hands, and in Donald’s case, pants.
duck.jpg

3. Ohio State Buckeyes
If you were wondering what in the world that happy, brown football-shaped head thing is, wonder no more! A buckeye, Ohio’s state tree, is a medium-sized, deciduous that produces nut-like seeds. So, that thing you see walking on the sidelines is a nut.
brutus.jpg

2. Stanford Cardinal
While we’re on the subject of trees, have you seen the Stanford Tree costume? No doubt, that thing is scary. But take away the bug-eyes and the mouth with red lipstick and all you have is a tree. Stanford has no official mascot, so the students chose the image from the Stanford seal and athletic logo as their fighting spirit symbol.
tree.jpg

1. Syracuse Orange
You eat an orange, it doesn’t eat you. Need I say more?

It Was Good While It Lasted

from mgoblog by Brian
10/18/2008 – Michigan 17, Penn State 46 – 2-5, 1-2 Big Ten

The reader may have noted a certain fevered quality to Friday's posting, and for good reason: I was sort of fevered. Bestruck by a head cold that wanted to kill my brain, I was in something of a fever dream until Zoltan punted it away with about two minutes left in the first half and Andre Criswell decided that it would be a good idea to pop Derrick Williams.
From there, reality reasserted itself with a thud.
This is not a "well coached team," I guess. It's hard to pick through all the detritus associated with that term—usually it means "loses too much for the accuser's taste"—and pick out a real definition, but suffice it to say well coached teams can return kickoffs past the twenty and don't pick up stupid personal fouls on downed punts. They don't they lead the country in fumbles. By a lot of metrics this not only a talent-deficient team but a discipline-deficient team as well.
And, okay, if you are concerned about that I get it. I think the longer view suggests Rodriguez can assemble a successful football team that does indeed seem "well coached," and by "suggests" I mean "makes it obvious".
There's not a whole lot more to say about unsurprising 30-point losses. We're going to see what the future holds one way or the other. I advocate patience, etc., you know the drill.
BULLETS

 • No offense to a fine young man, but NICK SHERIDAN=DEATH. The decision to start him over Threet, or play him ever while Threet is physically capable of throwing the ball, will go down as the most inexplicable one of the Rodriguez era.
 • Both of Threet's elbows are torn up? WTF? This is like a single player version of the broken thumb plague of 2005.
 • Obviously Brandon Minor was the major buzz coming out of the game, as he ran with power two Sam McGuffie's couldn't muster. And he didn't fumble the ball. The fumbling and the offensive line and the Notre Dame game and Minor's run of just-nagging-enough injuries makes McGuffie's insertion understandable; I think he lost his job, though.
 • When Threet was on the field he was impressive, and you could see that QB off-tackle/sweep thing was something they'd worked on significantly in practice but couldn't use the week before because Threet was busted up.
 • In the first half when Minor was gashing them up the middle I thought to myself "we need to have something that plays off this or they're going to adapt and shut it down"; this happened. I think the difference in future years will be the ability to go to something else when (or, preferably, just before) the opposing defense catches on to the stuff you're running. You can see there's a certain monotony in the offense.
 • Commenter ShockFX is going to find his annoyance at the "Minor should play more" threads be replaced by an an entirely different one genre: "why didn't Minor play more?" Projected rage level: steady.

Football Jambalaya -- Hitler Edition

from Boiled Sports by J Money
There's so much happening right now and I have a few free minutes so I wanted to talk about lots of things... which I've already done down below... but figured I should also do a football jambalya, which, while nobody seems to appreciate them, I kind of like.

Shitler Shravesty

As you may have heard, Lou Holtz compared Rich Rodriguez to Hitler, in some weird clumsy way... nobody quite understood the senile old man, including his castmates Mark May and Rece Davis. Holtz apologized on Saturday morning and ESPN will apprarently not discipline him, despite suspending Jemele Hill a few months ago for referencing Hitler in one of her columns. Interesting. Holtz is useless, anyway, so why not suspend him? It's not like he's adding anything.

Schlabach Continues To Be of Questionable Intelligence

Mark Schlabach, who writes inane article after inane article and yet still gets paid by ESPN, has another doozy out today. While everyone who watches college football has been impressed with Texas meeting the challenges they've faced and looking at the gauntlet of a schedule that they have to get through to make a potential National Title Game, Schlabach writes an "Is Texas Good?" article. Nice. I could break this down and point out what an idiot he is, but just read it yourself. You don't need help seeing how weird his argument is.

Thanks For Stopping By For 2008, Wisconsin

Wow, I guess after Pryor ran that one in against the Badgers at home on October 4, the Wisconsin team folded the tent, huh? Two straight tough losses and then they get blown out by Penn State and then.... 38-16 against Iowa? Really, Badgers? Weren't people talking about them as a Rose Bowl or even National Title contender just a month ago? 0-4 in the Big Ten... hey, welcome to the bottom of the heap, Wisky.

Moving to the NFL, It's Fun Watching the Cowgirls Implode

There's talk here in Texas about Wade Phillips being fired. I guess if he had stepped on Tony Romo's finger and broken it, or if he maybe had billyclubbed a better offensive line's collective kneecaps, then you could fault him for the 'Boys current skid. But seriously, did people think that a line that couldn't keep Romo from getting hurt was going to suddenly and skillfully protect 40-year-old relic Brad Johnson and they Cowboys would just roll?

Either way, for a Giants fan like me, it's fun to watch. Now up two in the loss column, and a tough division path ahead of them looks a little bit more navigable.

Mike Alstott Honored at Bucs Game

The ole A-Train got a well-deserved honor at the half of the Bucs game this weekend, being presented with two framed jerseys. One was his first one, in those hideous pre-1997 Tampa Bay jerseys that were basically synonymous with losing... and his name was spelled "Alsott" on it. Good to see the former Boilermaker -- and a favorite of ours -- being given full attention like that. Mike's a guy who just went to work every day and was never about the personal, individual honors, yet he has frequently deserved them. Good for you, Mike.

Road to Game Day: Week 7, Austin

from The Sporting Blog
Words by Keith Arnold, who is touring the country with his brother Phil as they invade a different college campus each Saturday during the football season. They’ll be reporting back in this space with their various adventures. You can also keep tabs on their vagabonding over at RoadtoGameDay.com. This weekend, they were in Austin for the Missouri-Texas game.

It is a much different experience watching a football game live and in person. Even with flat screens, HD, and all the fancy flying cameras they use now, you tend to forget about some of the basics. Like how big a football field actually is. Or how far a quarterback has to throw the ball on a deep out. And just how unbelievably big and fast these guys are. While you may not get the replay angles or the yellow line in the stadium, no matter how good your sound system is at home, you just can’t feel how loud a stadium gets during a big game. And Darrel K. Royal Stadium got plenty loud.
Say what you’d like about the Dallas Cowboys (and right now, there is plenty to say), but there is no team in the state of Texas more beloved than the Longhorns. And right now, there is no Longhorn more loved than Colt McCoy. If you told me that they were making a sequel to The Program, and star-quarterback-turned-head-coach Joe Kane took the coaching job at Fake Texas University and had to battle James Caan and the ESU Timberwolves, Colt McCoy would be the name of the gun slinging Texan that Joe would recruit to lead his team. It’s actually a little disappointing that McCoy’s real life brothers are named Chance and Case, I was hoping they’d be something like Stetson or Marlboro.
Watching McCoy play in person these last two games has helped me appreciate how good he is. When a guy can calmly pick up a bouncing football, out run the pass rush and throw a strike to a crossing receiver, you know he’s feeling it. From the moment the game started, it was pretty clear that the team with the skinnier quarterback was going to roll. And with the score 35-doughnut in the 2nd quarter, Phil was pretty happy we didn’t actually buy real tickets.
These last seven weeks have taught us more about economics than anything we learned in college. It should be a graduation requirement for Econ students to buy tickets from scalpers at their school’s biggest football game. The guy or girl who pays the most for a ticket fails the class. There is no better example of supply and demand than outside a packed stadium. And with supply being the lowest we’d seen since USC, we had to resort to the black market. As we haggled between scalpers asking $300 for a pair of lower level seats, we were approached by a guy who said he could get us end zone seats for 60 bucks. It sounded shady. We jumped on it immediately.
Our ticket purchases have been adventures every week. From scrambling to find a drunk frat guy with an unused ticket 10 minutes after kickoff in Gainesville, to lucking our way into two seats at USC because an actress alum had to be on set, to accidentally purchasing two tickets to the Georgia–Central Michigan game instead of the showdown with ‘Bama, it’s been a gong show every week. Now we had a guarantee into the stadium and end zone seats for the newly negotiated cost of 60 bucks total. And he assured us we could get into the stadium with our camera bag too. Were we concerned that he wouldn’t give us the “tickets” until we were at the gate? A little. Concerned enough to walk halfway around the stadium to where a bunch of other scalpers were selling tickets for $120 a piece? Not really.
Almost every stadium we’ve been to has a couple sketchy ticket takers or ushers that let people into the games for free. They might be cousins with the scalper and split the cash, and just shuffle a couple extra people into the stadium with bum tickets. We approached the gate with our “host,” who cut us to the front of the line where his buddy was a ticket taker. They did some kind of handshake and then we just walked in the stadium. It felt like the first time you got into a college bar with your fake ID. I handed the guy the 60 bucks and he just patted me on the back. “Man, there be plenty of seats in the end zone over there. You don’t need a ticket. Just go pick a seat.” And then he left. I wasn’t sure whether to feel scammed or cheated. But I did know, that if we were going to be sitting in the wrong seats, they might as well have been good ones.
So from the 40-yard line in the lower deck, we watched the best team in the country, the pride of Texas, led by its homegrown hero beat the bag out of an overmatched Mizzou. Somewhere, I’d like to think my Econ teacher is smiling. Although he’s probably just shaking his head.

Profiles in Disillusion: Missouri's all tripped up

from Dr. Saturday - NCAAF - Yahoo! Sports by Matt Hinton
A weekly look at conquered favorites and other notables picking up the pieces of shattered ambition.

Be it ever so humble ... Missouri's still in the running for the Big 12 North title and still a top 20 team according to the polls, far from the obscurity the Tigers have toiled in for most of the last 40 years. Surely the locals can appreciate progress and refrain from jumping to harsh conclusions after one bad half, on the road, against the No. 1 team in the country. Right?
ept_sports_ncaaf_experts-435538457-1224527503.jpg
Maybe not. The levelheaded Tiger partisans at Rock M Nation are trying to keep things in perspective with Positivity Week. But, yeah, that's really not off to a very good start:
We will not be winning a national title this year. With all the seniors (and players who won't be in Tiger uniforms next year...cough Maclin cough), I know there was a bit of desperation toward this--we're Mizzou and we don't [get] many chances to win a national title. We missed out last year, and it turns out that was the closest look we were going to get. That, for lack of a better term, sucks. Hard.
Indeed, although it can't help that the mythical championship meme really died last week, with the loss to Oklahoma State, and carrying it around after that is not healthy, emotionally. It's that much more traumatic when you coddle the Hope and hold it closer to your chest for another week before you realize it's really gone, instead of just abandoning it on the side of the road and moving on with a deadened, steely resolve as Hope's cries fade into the distance. Anyway, at least Chase Daniel is getting some love -- maybe more than he wants, actually:
Classy gesture by ESPN’s Chris Fowler after the game. Between live interviews with McCoy and Texas Coach Mack Brown, Fowler ran halfway across the field during a commercial break to give Daniel a hug as the Tigers filed into the locker room. He probably needed it.
You know Fowler's motto: leave no losing quarterback un-hugged. I'm sure Kirk Herbstreit didn't make fun of him at all for this, or casually bring it up later to a gaggle of sorority sisters on Sixth Street as Fowler silently nursed his merlot. No, Herbie's got his boy's back.
Thus ends the Bielema honeymoon. As Brian Cook helpfully notes, every coach of any note whatsoever has a "FIre [Insert Coach]" site these days -- literally every coach; just Google them -- but Fire Bret Bielema is getting much busier after Wisconsin was rolled by Iowa to cement an 0-4 Big Ten start. I was very much on the Badger bandwagon before the season, but it's easy for me to just take an objective step back and say, "Whoa, these guys are actually terrible" as the losses get progressively worse; for the Badger partisans, it's time to start hacking the wagon into torches and calling for a long-overdue Bielema hunger strike:
Who exactly is at fault that we can't get into the endzone? Erin Andrews stops Bret at the goalline. It is also not his fault that he has spent the past three years shoving his egotistical piehole making his team as fat and lazy as his helium blimp big man on campus bloated persona.
[...]
All the slack has been let out of his slacks and unfortunately they can not be tailored further. He has done irreparable harm to this program. Unfortunately, it is time to buy a new pair. The next stop is the grey buffet elastic drawers while he waits in line for his unemployment check.
ept_sports_ncaaf_experts-742790306-1224527459.jpg
Actually, on the heels of Shonn Green's physical, 217-yard domination of the Badger defense, the premature (yes, they are) calls for Bielema's head and waistline only tickles a little compared to what the Hawkeyes did to the Badger defense, according to Jay Valai:
“Our manhood was took today,” the sophomore strong safety said. “As a team, we backed down.”
Well, in that case, who wouldn't? I don't think Shonn Greene is certified for that sort of thing. For officially putting a rival's agonizing season out of its misery, though, he's your guy.
Touché, sirs. Michigan State had lost under Mark Dantonio -- seven times in a year-and-a-half -- but never by more than seven points before the start-to-finish beatdown Ohio State laid on the Spartans in East Lansing. In fact, the margins of defeat in MSU's previous seven losses under Dantonio combined added up to 38 points, the exact margin of the Buckeyes' 45-7 rout Saturday. Dantonio wasn't making excuses after loss like that to his old boss: he told the Lansing State Journal, "I feel like we were physically beaten and mentally beaten and outcoached," which seems about right, according to the score. But blogger Joe Rexrode isn't missing any opportunities to remind Michiganders who the state's real loser is for a change:
Dantonio made special mention of the impressive performance by [backup quarterback] Kirk Cousins and said his No. 1 concern is getting the players to recover quickly from the first blowout loss they've experienced on his watch.
In that regard, Michigan is probably coming at a perfect time.
At least Ohio State and Michigan State can come together in their taunting hatred of the Wolverines in their Year of Pain! No, seriously, it was pretty ugly out there.
Elsewhere in Disillusion ... They're fed up with the offense in Blacksburg. ... Losing to Virginia was a sadly familiar feeling for North Carolina fans. ... And Cal blogger TwinstNHook didn't miss anything Saturday night, did he?
