FLORIDA NOTES: SCRIMMAGE

Some quick notes I've gathered from the scrimmage, and we hope to have more as the day goes on.

Feleipe Franks had one of the big plays with a deep pass to Freddie Swain for a touchdown.
The name I keep hearing about in terms of the freshman defensive backs is Shawn Davis. He had a great day in the scrimmage and picked off a pass.

Two key vets didn't scrimmage from what I'm told: Jawaan Taylor and Antonio Callaway. Not entirely sure on the reason, but Taylor met with the media Friday and seemed fine and, as we said, some vets they already felt comfortable with were going to be held out. Don't think it's anything serious.

Another defender with an interception on the day was linebacker Vosean Joseph.

Was told that Del Rio was the best quarterback in the scrimmage. Same guy said he's been the best throughout fall camp. Doesn't really jive with what I've seen at least from a physical and passing standpoint, but there's no doubt he has the best knowledge of the system.

Jordan Scarlett is clearly the best back and has another very impressive day.

The defensive line apparently had an excellent day, while the offensive line was serviceable.

The defensive ends are generating a ton of pressure and did so again in the scrimmage. Could have been in part because both Taylor and Telfort were out. Tackle depth is not good right now.

The receivers looked great overall, while the quarterbacks as a whole were shaky, from what I hear. The defensive backs can't cover the receivers. Again, that's a group expected to be among the best in the nation (receivers), so that doesn't necessarily mean the defensive backs are bad, but there's work to do.

</figure>Florida said seven players have been suspended for the Gators’ season-opening game vs. Michigan.
Included in the group is wide receiver Antonio Callaway, Florida’s leading receiver in 2016.
“We have a small group of players that have made some choices that are extremely disappointing,” Florida coach Jim McElwain said in a statement. “Action has been taken – they have missed some practice and will miss the Michigan game. We will use this as a learning opportunity and we will have some players step up as we move forward.”
The other players suspended are defensive end Keivonnis Davis, defensive tackle Richerd Desir-Jones, linebacker James Houston, linebacker Ventrell Miller, defensive lineman Jordan Smith and offensive lineman Kadeem Telfort.
Per ESPN, a school official said the seven “were suspended for using school-issued, cost-of-attendance credit cards to buy electronics from the school bookstore and then selling those items for cash. The electronics were considered impermissible items for the players to buy with their cost-of-attendance cards.”
Callaway was cited for pot possession earlier this spring. He was suspended in 2016 but reinstated to the team after a Title IX investigation regarding an accusation of sexual assault. According to the Tampa Bay Times, a second Title IX investigation by the federal government has been opened and it appears to be releated to Callaway’s case at the school.
Davis had 27 tackles and 1.5 sacks in 2016 and he and the other suspended players are projected backups for the Gators.
Callaway had 54 catches for 721 yards and three touchdowns in 2016. He was also the Gators’ primary punt returner. Without Callaway, Florida’s top receiver heading into the Sep. 2 game vs. the Wolverines at the Dallas Cowboys’ AT&T Stadium is Brandon Powell. He had 45 catches for 387 yards a year ago.

Fwiw,

I played Michigan -2 -110 for 2 units last Saturday. I honestly wasn't expecting suspensions but decided that is as low as that number will go as is. I basically will look for a middle and should have hit that brief 4.5 I saw the other day but I am waiting for now. There are still a few weeks to go before we have all the info we need for a first game. I feel pretty confident that I will not have a bad number here and will have 'options'. My main play on this game will come the week of. As of now...I think I'll get the number I want. We shall see..

Few more days and I'll get back in this thread. Busy week and the site is changing over so it is a time crunch. See ya all in here soon...season almost here!

Gophers name both QB's as starters. I guess if you have two QB's you have none. No idea what to make of this. Just pick a guy and go with it....

i like croft. accurate. best gopher qb in a while. rhoda is a stiff. naming him a co-starter has to be a team moral thing. coming from fleck it makes sense

From GatorBait...

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- With fall camp closing this weekend and the team breaking into the normal routine of fall practices just ahead of game prep, GatorBait.net stops to take a look at what the depth chart looks like coming out of fall camp.

Keep in mind, these are just our projections of the depth chart at each position after watching the open portions of several practices and tapping our sources to find out who is lining up where once the media is escorted out of practices.

With seven players indefinitely suspended from all activities, we will not list them here. Here goes.

Quarterback

Feleipe Franks
Malik Zaire
Luke Del Rio
Kyle Trask
Jake Allen

Comments:

Don't put too much stock into this listing right now; frankly nobody seems to have a firm handle on what's going on in the quarterback battle. The big question is whether Florida will opt for a veteran presence at quarterback. If they do, expect Zaire or Del Rio to trot out there against Michigan. But Franks likely has the highest long-term upside and has had a strong fall camp.

Running Back

Jordan Scarlett
Lamical Perine
Malik Davis
Mark Thompson
Adarius Lemons

Comments:
The surprise out of fall camp has been Davis, who has been electrifying throughout fall camp and supplanted Mark Thompson on the depth chart. Expect that to be the top three, with Davis getting carries here and there to spell Scarlett and Perine and provide a bit of a different look with more speed.

Wide Receiver

X Receiver

Tyrie Cleveland
Freddie Swain
James Robinson

Z Receiver

Joshua Hammond
Daquon Green

Y Receiver

Brandon Powell
Dre Massey
Kadarius Toney

Comments:

We've got Toney listed third in the slot, but note that it's only because Massey has had a few more reps with the starters. Expect Toney to play major minutes and maybe even steal some of Massey's snaps moving forward. In terms of the other receiver slots, don't get too locked into X vs. Z. Florida tends to cross-train guys and will tinker with different combos to get the most production on the field at once.

Tight End

DeAndre Goolsby
C'yontai Lewis
Moral Stephens
Kemore Gamble
Kalif Jackson

Comments:

The top two on the depth chart is set here, while all three past that have gotten relatively equal reps. Injuries have played a part in that, as Jackson was the only scholarship tight end to participate in Friday's scrimmage (Goolsby was attending a family funeral).

Offensive Line

Left Tackle

Martez Ivey
T.J. Moore
Andrew Mike

Left Guard

Brett Heggie
Nick Buchanan

Center

T.J. McCoy
Tyler Jordan

Right Guard

Fredrick Johnson
Antonio Riles
Kavaris Harkless

Right Tackle

Jawaan Taylor
Tyler Jordan
Stone Forsythe

Comments:

Florida's offensive line still really only feels six men deep right now, with Jordan as the utility guy who will step in if there are any injuries anywhere. He'd play anywhere but left tackle, with Taylor sliding to left and Jordan going in at right if Ivey was hurt. Florida still need to shore up the depth chart considerably on the line. The loss of freshman Kadeem Telfort really hurt the tackle depth.

Defensive End
Weak-Side End

CeCe Jefferson
Jachai Polite
Antonneous Clayton

Strong-Side End
Jabari Zuniga
Jordan Sherit
Zachary Carter

Comments:

The depth took a considerable hit with the suspensions of Keivonnis Davis and Jordan Smith, but there are still plenty of capable players. Jefferson and Zuniga form a solid 1-2 duo, but a healthy Sherit will get starter's snaps, even if he isn't a designated starter. Polite quietly has had a strong camp this fall and could be a difference-maker nobody is really talking about right now.

Defensive Tackle

Three-Technique

Taven Bryan
Luke Ancrum
Elijah Conliffe

Nose Tackle

Khairi Clark
Kyree Campbell
Tedarrell Slaton

Comments:

Both Campbell and Ancrum have had productive fall camps, leaving the staff a little more comfortable with the depth at the position. Neither Slaton or Conliffe has really broken through just yet, but that's to be expected for true freshmen playing their first snaps in the trenches. They could see their snaps increase as the season goes on if they avoid redshirts.

Linebacker

Weak Side
Vosean Joseph
Rayshad Jackson

Middle

David Reese
Cristian Garcia
Lacedrick Brunson

Strong Side

Jeremiah Moon
Kylan Johnson

Comments:

This is another position where the depth got a lot thinner with the suspensions of James Houston and Ventrell Miller. With Johnson missing nearly two weeks now with a hamstring injury, Florida's had basically just three guys it can count on at linebacker. Jackson has made some progress, but the Gators will still be holding their breath if any of the starters here get hurt.

Cornerback

Boundary

Duke Dawson
Brian Edwards
McArthur Burnett

Field

Joseph Putu
Christopher Henderson
Christopher McWilliams

Nickel

Marco Wilson
Donovan Stiner

Comments:

Dawson and Putu seem to be as close to locking up the starting jobs outside as you could be at this point. Putu may yet be pushed for his job by Shawn Davis' emergence at safety, which could allow Chauncey Gardner to slide back down to cornerback. In any case, the starters here appear relatively clear otherwise.

Safety
Free Safety

Nick Washington
Shawn Davis
Brad Stewart
Strong Safety
Chauncey Gardner
Jeawon Taylor
Quincy Lenton

Comments:

Washington has been held out recently in some contact work as a precautionary measure to protect his shoulder, so Davis has gotten plenty of first-team reps. Davis could end up starting, though he'd like push Gardner down to cornerback to shore up things there rather than simply replacing Washington. The depth here looks better than it did to start fall camp, despite Taylor not emerging as expected and Lenton hobbled by two different injuries.

Special Teams

Kicker

Eddy Pineiro
Jorge Powell
Daniel Justino

Punter

Johnny Townsend
Tommy Townsend
Jon Gould

Long-Snapper

Ryann Farr
Jacob Tilghman
Brett DioGuardi

Kick Returner

Brandon Powell
Dre Massey
Christopher Henderson

Punt Returner

Tyrie Cleveland
Christopher Henderson

Comments:

The three specialist jobs outside of the return game are decided and set in stone. The return jobs could flip some early in the season, but these four names are the four to focus on in that regard. It's a bit unclear who leads in the kick return battle, but Powell's experience gets him listed first here

Current totals as of 9pm on 8/21/17

OSU 50.5
Minnesota 52
Rutgers 52.5
Wisconsin 48.5
Michigan St 56.5
Penn St 63.5
Purdue 69
Nebraska 47
N'Western 54
Illinois 58
Maryland 56
Michigan 45

Ohio St was 53 and Michigan 48 last week when marquee totals were released.

Bummer on one of those, good on the other.

Interesting. I'm already on Iowa in this one, and my basis for that play was largely OL/DL matchups (and Wyoming's defense in general), but this isn't good news for Hawkeye backers regardless. If Wyoming gets down, which I expect, they are going to chuck, chuck, chuck the ball the ball and Rugamba being out makes that a bit easier. At best, it opens the back door a little wider. At worst, it allows Wyoming to get off quick routes easier, somewhat nullifying the Iowa advantage in the trenches, keeping the Cowboys in the game.

Played Florida +4 -110 for 1 unit. I'll try for the middle but keep one extra unit on Michigan for now...

Also, I see OSU up to 56 right now...Grrrr

Cichy is a great player for Badgers but isn't Chris Orr back? I've heard alot of pessimism about UW LB unit (and apparently reserve Baun out now too), but Orr coming back would somewhat offset that no? Or maybe he doesn't possess the playmaking ability of the departures?

Head Coach Jim McElwain has announced that Jordan Scarlett and Rick Wells are suspended from all team activities.

Spectrum Sports has learned that a Florida Gators player implicated running back Jordan Scarlett and wide receiver Rick Wells into an ongoing investigation of a misuse of school issued funds.

According to a source, the Gators player named both Scarlett and Wells to the University of Florida Police Department.

The source says that their involvement in the alleged misconduct is the reason both will be suspended for Saturday’s season opener against Michigan. Head coach Jim McElwain confirmed Wednesday the two players will not travel to Arlington, Texas, but did not specifically address the reason for their suspension. McElwain says he wasn’t made aware of Scarlett and Wells involvement until Wednesday afternoon.

Scarlett led UF in rushing last year, totaling 889 yards and six touchdowns. He was expected to start this week.

The Gators will now be without 10 players for Saturday’s opener, but that number could rise. A source tells Spectrum Sports more players will be suspended in the future due to their involvement in the ongoing UFPD investigation.

On August 13, seven players, including top wide receiver Antonio Callaway were suspended. Multiple reports link the seven suspensions to a misuse of school issued funds.

Wow, turned in.

And perhaps more coming? They are already missing 12+ % of their roster.

B10

The tradition of day games.....Conference wide?

Just heard Wisky put lights in in 1998(true?)

And have had 19 night games since?

Just curious as I know UM was the same

Is it conf thing?

Some quick Michigan stuff..

-Obviously Speight starts, that was really never in question.
-We might see JOK in for a bit though. Again, who knows but the rumor is out there. He had a GREAT camp apparently. He likes Peps scheme a lot.
-Ulizio took the RT tackle spot the last week or so of camp. We shall see. I am excited for a more athletic line though.
-I've heard enough about the DLineman that is injured (concussion) but no clue at all. That might be the 30 mins before kick surprise sitting (Winovich)
-Punter wasn't settled yet last report I saw.
-If DPJ returns some kicks, I am very excited.
-I read yesterday they plan to keep some wildcat. I have no idea who the player would be and frankly am not a fan with how it was misused last year.

As far as a prediction and any plays on this game...

My initial play for months was Florida tt Under the number. Obviously I was looking for 21.5-23.5. They do not release TT's concurrent with totals so that was never happening once the second round of suspensions were announced.

I have Michigan -2 for 2x and Florida +4.5 for 1x so that leaves some key numbers open and I still have more on the team that is -5 now.

As far as how this game goes...

I expect Florida to throw deep a bit early on to challenge the secondary. I would not be surprised to see an early bomb hit for the Gators. On offense, as long as Michigan executes they will score enough points. This will be a showcase game for Rashan on defense, methinks, as well. I still think Florida goes under the total for their team but am waiting it out as of now...

Michigan 27-14 Final.

As far as posting plays, if their is a B1G play I will for most part or discuss in here. I wwould say half my stuff this year will be late additions/live/trading. So far this week got lucky with the 2h outbursts from OSU and Wisky and obviously had Okie Lite in several forms. I won't talk about Washington, that was bad, bad bad. Good start to the year overall though. I have about 6-10 targets today I will be looking at. Nebraska and the UM game will be my Big Ten focus though...

GL to all, enjoy a GREAT day.

A big ten play for ya'll.

That's all I'll be posting in here since it is a big ten thread.

Michigan over 24..0.50

Obviously if you are looking to critique Michigan today focus on..

-Corners
-Right Tackle
-Hunts boy Speight
-Kugler at Center
-Punter (just new, should be very good eventually)
-Offensive Play Calling

Everything else should be just fine.

Great info on that Michigan game. Speights is a hard one to figure out. He hits both extremes of poor QB play and clutch QB play. I'm a big Harbaugh fan but his play calling to close out the last 6 minutes was atrocious.
